Apple should do its QA...Wasting hours on the update and restore process!

Here we go again....I just tried to update to 3.0 and it downloaded the 235 mb of application and then died out with an error message. Now I see the dreaded picture of a CD with the USB head on my iphone. My laptop does not appear to recognize the iphone device anymore. Isn't it about time that Apple admitted there is a flaw with this process... I know this will get fixed after I spend hours on it -
Here is an update. After spending more than an hour with the first Apple "genius" uninstalling everything apple from my laptop and reinstalling the whole stuff again, hitting restore 2-3 times and coming up with the same "1604" error message again and again, I have been handed off to someone who claims to be a "manager" as well.
I am at my wits end as I am currently without any of my contacts and ability for others to reach me. The least that Apple should do is put a disclaimer that " mAYBE SOME OF OUR PHONES MAY crash or DIE BECAUSE OF our updates." And maybe Apple should be doing its own QA instead of making us pay with our time trying to troubleshoot these issues for them.
Here's my next update...the said manager asked me to delete the _restore file from the applications folder - which was done and it started the download of the 235 MB file all over again. All 40 minutes later, the network error comes up and I restart the download. It completes after 35 minutes. And now I try doing the restore part and it craps out as can be expected -error 2002. Tried again and it craps out - error 1604.. Now why do I have to go through this. SHOULDNT Apple be doing this testing and retesting before releasing it us the public...
And I missed one appointment already and had a nightmare time trying to get hold of some numbers that are on the now dead phone...
OK, I have the fifth crap out just now 4 hours later - error 1604 later!!

Make sure you USB 2.0 and follow my steps too as below........I had mega problems too. Try following the steps in my posting as below after creating a new user account on your computer with ADMIN priviledges also. See my posting on 20/06/2009 22:33 titled "Upgrade Error number 4 and Restore Error 1603 when going to OS 3.0 - Solved"
And turn off any antivirus and firewall software too, before doing so. In ITunes, highlight your iphone icon and then click the Restore Button on the ITunes Summary tab which seems to force the iphone into an update. Dont try using the Check for update button. Good Luck...........

    I'd say it's possible that you internet connection is slow. I would try to cancel the download and possibly restart the router, then try the update again.

    A reset, hold down the home/sleep button together until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the phone to boot back up.

I am surprised to see such a effortless update from a company squatting on the resources to make a change its customers are asking for.

    Another user just has a similar issue tonight and I advised him to go to the below Apple support link to see if the password was recognized there, which eventually resolved his username/passowrd issue. Give it a try and see if it works.

    You can log out of the currently logged in account by taping on the id in Settings > Store (Settings > iTunes & App Stores on iOS 6) and you can then log back in.
    If you updated your existing account with a new email address then that shoud 'refresh' it on it
    If you created a new account then any content that you purchased/downloaded via the old account will remain tied to that old account, and only that old account can redownload its content and download updates to its apps. You should be able to update an account's email address via this page : http://appleid.apple.com

    The apps were purchased by another user with a different Apple ID. You will have to erase them and repurchase them using your Apple ID.

    I am having same problem . i can not use the phone. my Carrier ROGERS checked the phone its not stolen or lost phone but after restoring always ask for apple ID of previous owner and seller is not responding to any mails or phone if some one can help me out than it will be great.

    i tried reseting my ipod today and had a similar problem... it wont be recognized by itunes, the only thing i havent tried is putting it into DFU mode, or the state that it is in when u recieve it telling u to connect it to itunes.i recommend putting it into DFU mode. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34v8HMC9B98 this should better explain it. if i find another way, ill keep u updated

    Bob,
    Just to confirm you have a macbook air right?  If so and it is mid 2011 or later running OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion or newer you can mirror it.  If home sharing is on and ATV and MBA are on same id and network you should get the airplay icon near the clock on the mac and that should mirror your screen.
    If you have an older mac or pc a third party app called airparrot can do it for you.

    I am having the exact same problem with the iMessage on both my MacBook pro and my iphone4. It either says the username/password is incorrect or it can not contact the server. Facetime and iCloud works just fine with the same apple id and password. Somebody please help, I am beyond frustrated!
