Apple software update  - info required

Hi,
I need some info relating to the fully qualified domain names used when running a software update on OS X ( and any port numbers if something other than http/https is used).
By default when one of our students connects their client machine into their study bedroom network socket it is placed in a severely restricted network.
At this point we use a DNS redirector to restrict the number of addresses that are resolved correctly, returning a local IP address for anything other than remote sites we want them to visit.
Any attempt to access web pages other than the ones resolved correctly by the DNS resolver results in their browser pointing to a local page saying "you are connected to a restricted network..."
This page also tells them what they have to do in order to get connected to a "real" network.
The dns resolver correctly hands out all the IP addresses required for a user to perform a Windows Update. and I'd like to set the same thing up for OS X updates.
I know that an os x leopard machine connects to swquery.apple.com and swscan.apple.com during the software update check, but are their any other sites it needs access to when an update is available?
TIA
Alex

Add http://www.apple.com so that they can access the downloads directly and https://swdlp.apple.com/, http://wsidecar.apple.com/, and http://supportdownload.apple.com/ (and there might be more) so they can download them manually, http://discussions.apple.com/ so they can peruse these forums, and http://search.info.apple.com/ so they can locate knowledge base documents.

For what it's worth, at the point the installation fails, Bonjour, Apple Application Support, and Apple Mobile Device Support all show as installed on Control Panel. Apple Software Update has a link on the Start Menu but does NOT show as installed on Control Panel. Is there a way to install this separately from iTunes?

    Ken Powers (Last update 9/25/2006):
One additional note regarding Max Ustinov's comment:
If you have multiple instances of SQL Server, you will need to repeat this process for each instance. For example, I have a default instance and a named instance. I must add the appropriate permissions to the bin folder of each instance. The folder for the default instance is the same one Max showed us:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\OLAP\bin.
The folder for the named instance is:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.4\OLAP\bin.
The folder requiring the permissions will be shown in the event regarding "msmdctr90.DLL".
    Max Ustinov (Last update 9/10/2006):
I had 2 instances of this event in a row on a SQL 2005 Server. The first error stated "Resolve Partial Assembly failed for Microsoft.VC80.CRT.mui. Reference error message: Access is denied". The second error immediately after said "Generate Activation Context failed for C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\OLAP\bin\msmdctr90.DLL. Reference error message: Access is denied". These errors may also be accompanied by event 1008 and 1023 from source Perflib.
I found that these errors are caused by the "Performance Logs and Alerts" service if it runs as "Network Service”, which is a member of "Performance Log Users" local user group. Although the individual DLL permissions are set, this group does not have enough permission to SQL AS bin folder. To fix this problem, for the "Performance Log Users" local user group, modify or add "List Folder Contents" permissions in the following folder:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\OLAP\bin.
    Mihai Andrei (Last update 8/15/2006):
According to Microsoft, there are three possible causes:
1.The component or manifest depends on another program or component that is not installed.
2.The manifest contains XML content that is not valid.
3.The user does not have the correct permissions.
See MSW2KDB for solutions to this problem.
This event occurs when you install SQL Server 2005 on a computer that is running the original release version of Windows XP, because SQL Server 2005 requires the GetSystemTimes function. The GetSystemTimes function is included in Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) and in later Windows XP service packs. See M922669 for details on this situation.
This problem can occur when you have version 5.2.3790.2426 or a more recent version of the Winlogon.exe program installed. See M914061 for a hotfix applicable to Microsoft Windows Server 2003.
This problem occurs because the run-time libraries are not installed on the Microsoft Dynamics CRM server. The applications that use side-by-side libraries cannot run without the run-time libraries. See M923014 to resolve this issue.
    John Goulden (Last update 12/19/2005):
This event occurs in conjunction with EventID 32 from source SideBySide and it is caused by an application that was not packaged with all of the necessary runtime files. In my case this was caused by the Logitech SetPoint software and was solved by getting the appropriate C++ 2005 Redistributable Package.

When you start the Date and Time tool in Control Panel in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 64-Bit Edition, the Date and Time Properties dialog box may not display the date and time correctly. See M841082 for a hotfix applicable to Windows Server 2003 64-Bit Edition.

  • Syncing Apple software update?

Hi, I’ve looked everywhere on the net and can't find anything remotely like i want.
What i want to do is sync my local apple software update server (at site 1) with another local apple software update server (at site 2) on internet usage.
Has anyone tried/done this before? Any help would be great! Using lion 10.7.4

You can sync some items, edit apps, control what is stored on the device by using iTunes on your Mac or PC.
Syncing mail and calender info or Notes an Reminders requires the iCloud services.

  • Okay since last apple software update my safari will not open youtube, yahoo or google

Okay since last apple software update my safari will not open youtube, yahoo or google, an error message comes up saying safari cannot connect to the server.  Can anyone help me with this please?

    Hi Joshua ..
Check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to:  Open in 32 bit mode  is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari to test.
If that wasn't the issue, try using OpenDNS.
Use OpenDNS for better speed, more security, prevents the, "can't connect to server" issue, includes anti phishing filters, prevents browser re directs, and it's free.
Open System Preferences / Preferences then select the Network tab. Click the Advanced tab then click the DNS tab.
    Click +
Enter these addresses exactly as you see them here.
    208.67.222.222
    Click +
    208.67.220.220
    Then click OK.

  • I am trying to install Itunes again but it wont let me. So i was uninstalling all the apple and itunes programs to start over, i have everything uninstalled exept Apple Software Update. HELP PLEASE

When i try to uninstall Apple software update it brings up a message saying "There is a problem with this Windows installer package.  A program requirement for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." I believe i have Windows VISTA. Yes i know its old but i have not had the money or time to update.
I just want itunes installed properly so i can use it for when i have my new phone. please please help i have tried everything it seems like !

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • Apple Software Update error- "Entry Point not found"

I have had Apple Software Update/ iTunes on my PC for over 4 years. Today, randomly, when I went to update iTunes to the new 10.5 version, Software Update did not prompt me to update. That was odd, but I didn't realize anything was amiss yet at this point.
In iTunes, I went Help > Check for Updates which indicated the new version was downloaded. When promted whether I'd like to update, I hit yes, which even more oddly took me to apple.com to download iTunes all over again. (Normally, updates download from within iTunes and it's an update, not a full hour-long re-download.)
I didn't want to redownload iTunes (what would happen to all of my previously downloaded apps and music, set playlists?) so I opened Software Update, and got the following error message:
SoftwareUpdate.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point ?CreateProductsFromXML@CSUCatalogObject@@QAEXP6AIPAXIIJ@ZOIV?@CStringT@WV?$StrT raitMFC@WV?ChTraitsCRT@W@ATL@@@@@ATL@@@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library SoftwareUpdateFiles.dll
    Strange, right?
    So my questions.
1.) Does anyone know why Apple Software Update would suddenly get errors? I've used it recently (this past weekend?) and everything was fine.
2.) Is there a way to fix Software Update, since I'll surely need it in the future.
3.) In the meantime, should I proceed with re-downloading the full version of iTunes again, and will it mess up anything I currently have in my iTunes library? Would I need to back it up or do anything to help ensure there are no further problems?
Thanks for your help. To say I'm confused is an understatement!

Well... after I posted this, some info from other posts came up and I found the answer!
In case anyone has the same issue that runs across this... this worked for me perfectly.

  • Unable to install itunes 64it, on windows 7, stops at "unscheduling apple software update"

The installation goes on fine, until it begins the "unscheduling apple software update" proccess,  at which point I get a message saying; "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run.
    Any ideas anyone?

When I hit repair for it I get a message saying "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable",
And when I tried uninstall, it occurs exactly as the original error.
So this is probably damage to the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi (or associated gubbins in the Windows Installer Service installation database for ASU).
Let's try clearing away the existing broken ASU, and seeing if that lets us get iTunes in.
Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up").
In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp and restart the PC. Download a fresh iTunes installer from the Apple Website:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Does that install go through any better?

  • Can't install iTunes or uninstall Apple software updater.

When trying to upgrace iTunes on my Windows 7, 32-bit machine, I receive the following error message: “There is a problem with the Windows Installer package. A program required for this install could not be run.” I tried uninstalling all appple products (in the correct order), but the Apple software updater won't uninstall; when trying ot uninstall it I get the same message I get when trying ot upgrade iTunes. Any ideas?

Go to Microsoft website to fix install and Unistall problems. Click "Run now" from Fix it to remove all iTunes & related installer files:
    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
Be aware that Windows Installer CleanUp Utility will not remove the actual program from your computer. However, it will remove the installation files so that you can start the installation, upgrade, or uninstall over.

  • Error message: cannot remove older versions of apple software update

I recently got a 30 gb ipod, and i cant install itunes 7. I originally tried installing it at first, and it said cannot remove older applications of Apple Software Update. So i installed itunes 4 to put music on my ipod. Then i tried again to install itunes 7 and i keep getting the same error message. Anyone else having this problem? Can anyone give me some suggestions please?

I would first try and remove both iTunes and Quicktime prior to doing the install of iTunes. The following link will show you how to remove both programs. Make sure you do Step 16 as it is usually Quicktime that causes problems with the upgrade.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93698
If it will not let you remove the programs, you can try using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. The download is about 1/4 of the way down the page. Good luck.
