I've bought a mac and got a gift card by email, how do i cash it in?

Did you get an Apple Store gift card or an iTunes gift card?
An Apple Store gift card can't be "cashed in." You can use it for payment or partial payment for something from the Apple Store, the Apple Store on line or the Apple telestore, 1-800-MY-APPLE.
You must redeem an iTunes gift card and then you will have a balance in your account that you can use to buy things from the iTunes Stores and the Mac App Store.

    You can't from Apple, they don't let you buy iTunes gift cards with an Apple Store gift card. You could see if a different store in your country might let you (though they possibly won't), or try selling the card to somebody e.g. family, friend, eBay etc

    Apple stores, including online, won't let you buy iTunes gift cards with an Apple Store gift card - it can only be used to buy hardware/software from the store. Other stores might let you do so, or you could try selling the card

    I bought an iTunes £50 voucher online as a present for my sister, thinking she could redeem the value towards buying an iPad.
    I opted for the code to be emailed on the day of her birthday, which is today.
    However, I've just learned that I should have bought an Apple Store gift card... How confusing.
    Will Apple likely be able to transfer the balance across? And if so, how do I do it?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    They've checked the spam folder as well as the inbox on the email account that you sent it to ?
    You should also be able to try resending it (and double-check the email address) : Resend iTunes Gifts.

    Hey Carterc25, I have been dealing with the same issue this morning... I've talked to the senior adviser of Applecare and "Bruce" told me the only way to convert apple gift card to itunes is by physically going to an Apple Retail Store and buy an Itunes gift card. Many people don't understand the difference between "apple" and "itunes" in gift cards so it is only obvious more people will fall victim to scheme. My advice is DO NOT BUY APPLE GIFT CARD.
    Another reason to ditch Apple and be a Microsoft customer. #Microsoftisbetterthanapple

    From what I see and from my experiment in the U.S, online Apple Store, I would say that yes you can. iTunes gift cards are sold in the Apple Online store and Apple Store gift cards are an accepted form of payment on the store, so that means to me that it is possible.

    I've just today found a way to do this.
    The new style physical gift cards at Apple Stores have a scratch panel with a QR Code for them to download the pass in PassBook, so i did a bit of experimenting. I Scanned the QR code from the card into a QR Reader and it brought this up. (edited to remove my gift card details)

    So, i next used a QR generator to create a QR, but added my details, and then scanned that with passbook... and it worked!
    (It will give an error about the pass being inactive when you try on safari so make sure you scan the code using the QR Scanner in passbook)

    You cannot buy itunes items but you can buy app store items.  iTunes gift cards can be used for both.  Here is an Apple document.
