Apple Store Repair How long and what do I need to know?

Hi there,
My Ethernet port is not working, I need it replaced under warranty.
I am going overseas and wanted my wife to drop it off at the Apple Store, is that the best way to go about repair? Any idea how long it might take? does she need to have an appointment or anything else?
Is my data safe? do I need to remove my admin passwords?
I bought it on ebay so the registration is under someone elses name, is that a problem?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm leaving in the morning and their phone support is closed..

Hi chaimdan. You ask some good questions about taking your computer in for repairs.
There are three ways to go about getting a repair for an Apple portable. One, as you suggest you are doing, is to carry in to an Apple retail store. Another is to call Apple directly (800-275-2273 in the USA) and have them set up a mail in repair. Third is to go to an Apple authorized service provider and have them do the repair. If it can be done in store, the Apple retail store repair is probably the fastest. If not, I would go with the mail in repair. All three of these can usually be done in under a week, but if the parts you need are out of stock it can take longer. On occasion mail in repairs can be completed in as few as four days (including shipping) which is astonishingly fast!
Always always always make backups of your important data before sending the computer in for repairs. Apple will run a final hardware test on your computer after completing the repair, and if the hard drive shows signs of failure they will replace it, without warning you and without backing up your data. You will need to give them your password before they can do repairs. If you have data you want to remain confidential, take it off the computer.
If your wife does take it in to an Apple retail store, be sure she [makes an appointment|http://www.apple.com/retail] first or she may spend a long time waiting to speak to a Mac Genius.
Registration does not matter. Computers change hands all the time. If you own it now, ask Apple to register it to you.

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac. You should be able to set a password for it. Save it. Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer, I suppose, back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity. As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,

don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine and go for it. You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups of your stuff.

I'm assuming you can..now I don't know the prices for your area, you'll have to check around, I just did a quick web search and I'm pulling all sorts of prices up, I'd look into a repair facility near you and see what they can do for you :-) shouldn't be too expensive though! Good luck!

If it is still under warranty you can call the 800 number to apple and enter the serial number and it will tell you if it is under warranty or not if not its like $30 basically for them to help or something like that it said today when i called...
Or take it to a genius bar if you have one near?

You would have to move to the U.S. and find a place to live. Then you would have to get a credit card billed to that U.S address. Then, as long as you were inside the borders of the U.S., you could buy from the U.S store.

I have never had an issue with a charger, nor has anyone I know personally.
All of my old chargers still work just fine.
If yours are failing within the waranty period, then you should be able to get a free replacement.

Are you referring to the AppStore application, or to the Apple Store web-site? If the former, like Carolyn says; if the latter, then you need to go to http://www.apple.com/uk/
However, if the former then you haven't set up your computer for the UK, go into System Preferences and configure your region.

I went to the apple store about a week ago to get my screen fixed, and when I get it back I don't have an option to boot into my windows partition. The bootcamp partition is still there, but I can't boot into it. I can still see all of the files on the drive. When I try to boot into windows from the startup disc setting I get "no bootable device — insert boot disk and press any key” on a black screen. I went in for a dead pixel, and the guy at the genius bar ran something on my computer and went into disk utility application. I’m not sure what he was doing, but obviously that’s what messed up my windows partition. How can I be able to boot back into windows? Here's what disk utility looks like on my computer.

Mailing off macbook for repair--how long should it take?

Sometime next week I will be mailing off my macbook to have the optical drive replaced under warranty. Since I'm mailing it to some shop in Texas and I'm not taking it to an apple store, I assume they will have the parts on hand and will fix it immediately--by the day after they receive it--right?
For those of you who HAVE mailed off your macbook for repair: how long did it take to get it back? A week? 2? 3?

The place you're mailing it to in Texas is one of the main facilities where Apple fixes portable computers in the US. Their turn around time is typically same day, or usually within 24-36 hours. Factor in shipping to and from (Sundays if involved) and you'll get your machine, barring any shipping incidents within 5-7 days (or less).

Recently at the Apple Store in Vancouver an Apple staff reset my computer (erased everything and sent to iCloud to reset the iPad) and I hoped this would fix the problem. IPad Safari still crashes. Short of booking an appointment for taking it for repair to Apple technicians which will cost me money can anyone help me to fix this Safari crashing.

You might have a 3rd party plugin that isn't compatible with Safari 4.0.4. Go here for help...

If you are using a USB hub, try disconnecting and restarting with just your keyboard and mouse connected.
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.

It contains fixes that might help. Then repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

You first need to purchase and install OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to increase the RAM in your iMac.
Your year and model iMac can take 4 GBs of RAM. Out of that amount of RAM, the 2006 iMac will recognize between 3.1 and 3.4 GBs of that total RAM.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
Once OS X 10.6 is installled , you will need to use OS X Software Update function in OS X's System Prefernces Panel to update to OS X to OS X 10.6.8. This will give your iMac access to the Mac App Store.
If you wish, your iMac year and model can only be updated to OS X 10.7 Lion. Your hardware limits you to OS X 10.7 Lion. Your iMac can't run or install OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion OR OS X 10.9 Mavericks.

My strong advice is that you keep your iMac model on OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. OS X 10.7 Lion needs a full 4 GBs of RAM, for the OS alone. Your Mac barely meets this requirement and will leave no additonal RAM to efficiently run any additional application without severly slowing down your iMac.
Before embarking on a OS X system upgrade, it would be very prudent to back up all of your important, personal data, beforehand.
You can choose just to backup the most important data by either burning data to CDs/DVDs, or copying data to large capacity USB flash drives.
The two better methods is to purchase a good quality external hard drive and backup the data and OS using OS X's Time Machine app to back your data up to an externally connected hard drive.
The other method is to backup your entire system and data using data cloning apps such as Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to clone an exact copy of your iMac's internal hard drive to the externally connected hard drive. Cloning data to an external drive will give that drive the ability to boot from in an emergency. Your Mac will be able to be booted and run off of an external drive.
The type of connection of an external hard drive is yours to choose. The two types of data transfer connections your Mac can use are USB 2.0 or FireWire 400/800.
If you want a hard drive that has a faster, continuous throughput of data and the possibilty of running your iMac from an external hard drive (in the event your Mac's internal hard drive fails or data becomes corrupt and your Mac system won't boot to the Mac's internal drive) opt for a FireWire drive. If none of this is important to you, then get a hard drive that uses a USB 2.0 connection, instead.

Only have 1.75GB apps - no music, videos, etc. I'm afraid since we synced both devices, my iPod has taken on the iPad capacity. Does this make sense to anyone?
