Apple support can't seem to help - can you?

I have a 27 inch Imac (late 2009) running Lion 10.7.5.  I am  having extreme difficulities with spotlight and time machine.  Spotlight reindexes everytime I reboot and time machine never finishes a backup. 
Thus far my Apple Care protection and a number of people at Apple have provided me with the following solutions, none of which have been successful.
A basic reinstall
Completely reformatting my time machine disk
A complete "clean" reinstall - after which I installed all programs from fresh install files and only transfered my personal documents from an external drive back onto the mac.
An attempt to Repair Home Permissions and ACL's through the Lion Recovery thing - it ran for 4 hours to no conclusion.
I also went out and purchased an entire new external harddrive to use as a time machine since I figured it could possibly be the old one (even though the apple store techs checked it and wiped it).
Oh and there is a new keyboard on the way since my wireless one wouldn't connect after the reinstall.
Any ideas as to what could be wrong.  Is it hardware? Permissions?  I've spent hours and hours (almost a full 40 hour work week at this point), on the phone or in the Apple Store and it still isn't working properly.  I'm one more phone call away from giving up and putting the thing in the recycling bin, so hopefully someone out there can help.

This is a problem.
Boot your Mac normally and launch Console - it is in your Utilities folder. From the View menu, select Show Log List if it is not already shown. Select system.log from the log list.
In the filter field at the upper left type mdworker. You will probably find many errors associated with Spotlight indexing. Copy a couple dozen of those entries and post them in a reply. Do the same for mds.
Time Machine will not function until Spotlight builds an index and it sounds as though it never finishes. You can force it to reindex by performing the following:
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Click Spotlight.
Click the Privacy tab.
Drag a folder or an entire volume (your hard drive) to the list.
If prompted for confirmation, click OK.
Remove the item or volume you just added to the list by clicking it and then clicking the minus ("-") button.
Close Spotlight preferences.
Spotlight will re-index the contents of the folder or volume.
This is unlikely to help given the failed attempt to repair home permissions and ACLs though. The reason for that is a mystery. Boot OS X Recovery again, select the startup volume, and click the Repair Disk button. Reply with any errors that it reports in red.
Whatever problem is causing this may best be solved by erasing your startup disk, followed by installing OS X from the Recovery partition, followed by observing the system's behaviour prior to installing anything more, followed by correlating Spotlight indexing subsequent to installing additional software. I realize you performed a "clean reinstall" but the definition of that is subject to interpretation.

    These are user-to-user forums, I've asked the hosts to remove your email address from your post.
    Apple and/or iTunes support can't locate it for you, only you can potentially locate it via http://icloud.com on a computer or Find My iPhone / Find My iPad on another device - but that will only work if it's connected to a network and the device hasn't already been wiped and/or Find My iPhone disabled on it.
    If it was stolen then you should report it to the police. You should also change your iTunes account password, your email account passwords, and any passwords that you'd stored on websites/emails/notes etc.

    You need to restore your iPad from your most recent backup in iTunes to get back your settings and app data. If you can't find a backup, your data may be lost. If you'll tell us what OS your computer is running, we can tell you where to look for the backup files.

    What do you mean by everything?  Have you really tried all the things on this page? http://www.apple.com/support/ipodtouch/assistant/itunes/  Note that the iPod should be recognized as a digital camera for the purposes of seeing the pictures taken with the iPod camera and it should be also recognized in iTunes for all other functions.

  • Can't update Apple software - can you help?

    As of 2 days ago, and for no reason I can think of, my iMac G5 will not update any Apple software (iTunes, Quicktime etc.).
    The Software Update application (from the Apple menu) will not open, and clicking on its icon from System Preferences produces the error: Preferences Error - could not load Software Update. Prior to this, the function worked fine.
    Trying to update the software 'manually' with the standalone installers for these applications does not work either. If I try to execute the .pkg or .mpkg files that I download from the Apple site, the Software Update icon fleetingly opens and closes again in the dock, but nothing further happens.
    Apple Support (via telephone) suggested this might be a network conflict and suggested a fix (related to Ethernet network configuration) but this has not worked.
    Any ideas for me?

    Also, Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
    You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.

I tried installing Mountain Lion, at the suggestion of Apple Support but I need to be running at least 10.8 in order to install that. What do I do? I don't want to have to be pushed into buying another computer when this one works just fine - but I'd like to be able to run Photoshop Elements. Apple has charged my credit card for the purchase of Lion and yet it won't install and I don't know what to do now.
