Apple support & Firewires
Is it true Apple don't support customers who don't have a buyer protection plan or who've run out of it ('z what they told me)? That succks, because you can run into issues later on which are impossibly discovered in the first couple years. Uh, such as Firewire problem once your ibook runs amok. Btw, if a Firewire transfer keeps failing, how can you know wether problem lies with the target computer or the host computer? You can't, right? And Apple won't help you unless you've paid them. (Some say Apple has great support but I'm not sure yet).
Another question would be nice to have answered too which is why Apples Firewire technology is so unstable. Like "Rhonda" (?) adviced previously that you must press to the left of the track pad to make the transfering from one device to another work, or to prevent it from hanging itself. How, can a praised technology like Firewire, under a praised brand/company like Apple, be so incredibly wacky? Foremost, Why?

No, this is not true. Apple will continue to support their products. If the product is out of warranty, then there will be a fee for support. You can't possibly expect any company to provide free support for all products forever.
Apple Discussions is a great example of free technical support for every product Apple has ever released. If you have trouble with a product, and you don't wish to pay for Apple support... then post your problem here. CHances are, someone will be able to help you for free.

Unable to capture DV to FCE, apple support told me a PC is the way forward!

I recently bought an apple imac with a view to editing DV footage taken previously.
I had captured some of these tapes on to a PC before buying an imac. These files I was able to edit on FCE and imovie (once I had transferred them from the pc hard drive). HOWEVER although I could control my DV camera through imovie and FCE none of my old DV tapes could be captured to the imac. An error message states that the frame rate is incorrect.
I have apple care protection and have spent ages trying to get support for this only to be told by apple support that FCE and imovie will not capture my old DV tapes! The support person told me that I should go back to a PC if I want to do the job properly!
Unfortunately I have just spent thousands on this very nice looking imac (and FCE) that is apparently unable to do the most basic capturing. Does anybody have any ideas (other than going back to pc) for getting my DV footage captured?
Needles to say I have found all this incredibly frustrating as a new apple user. Are these sorts of issues common to imacs?

I shot tape previously (in 2000) on a sony mini DV camcorder set to SP. I have since bought a new sony mini DV camcorder (DCR-HC40 NTSC).
With the new camera and a PC I was able to capture my 2000 tapes and edit them. I was also able to edit the earlier footage I had transffered from my PC hard drive to the i-mac on i-movie and FCE.
Unfortunatley everytime I have tried to capture my old tapes directly onto the i-mac I have had the message "preview disabled" from FCE and the following from i-movie:
"The camera is sending half-sized frames, which iMovie can’t accept. Check your camera’s record mode (this is the setting that affects recording quality, which determines the total recording time on a tape). The mode must be set to “SP” or “LP.” If that doesn't help, try removing all the cables and batteries from the camera, wait a minute, replace them, and then reset the date, time, and record mode."
I have spent weeks on the support site and found a thread that recommended re-installing quicktime etc but nothing has worked.
I connect to the i-mac via firewire and am able to control the camera, capture my newly recorded miniDV's (so it is not a problem with the proprietary software application etc) but nothing seems to work for my old tapes.
Apple support told me that apple doesn't do older miniDV's and that a pc would be the only way I could capture my tapes. I couldn't believe it! Unfortuatley I no longer have access to my old pc.
Any ideas? Is there any other way of getting DV onto my i-mac?

So here is what I found and what I did to try to alleviate the RAM eating upgrade named Yosemite. This guy has helped quite a few people, you can read all the comments and I gave it several tries this morning.

I post this hoping to help those users who, like me, are experiencing high CPU usage and massive memory leaking with OS X core services and apps, leading to slow performance and battery drain.
I've tried everything mentioned, but found the right combination of steps to follow. I've tried this with seven different Apple computers, including mine, and has worked well so far. I applied this method yesterday to give these process a 24 hour window to fail again, so far everything good.
First step: disconnect any external or secondary monitors, if any is present. The video memory allocation leak can also happen if you have a system with an integrated card, like Intel, with no external monitors attached.
Second step: Shut down your machine and enter Safe Mode (press shift once you turn on your computer again, more info below). Once you're there, fix your disk permissions.

Third step: From Safe Mode turn off your machine again and reset your System Management Controller (SMC). There are different methods, depending on machine, to do this. To know what method applies to yours read the following guide.

Fourth step: Once your machine completes a full boot after resetting the SMC turn it off again and reset your PRAM (THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP, BUT THE PREVIOUS ONES ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THIS ONE TO WORK). The PRAM stores small bits of data that indicate our Apple computer how to interact with the devices connected to it, including monitors and video cards. It also affects software.
To reset it you should hold the OPTION, COMMAND, P and R keys in your keyboard immediately after turning on your machine again.You'll hear the start up chime, continue pressing the keys until the machine boots and the chime starts A SECOND TIME, then release. IF YOUR YOSEMITE INSTALLATION LOCKS UP AT A BLACK SCREEN AFTER THIS, DONT PANIC! It's normal, just turn off your computer and let it boot again.

I hope to hear from anyone even to knock me in the head, lol. Thanks in advance and I'll be around trying to figure this out.1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:

☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.

5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro 13" and bought a brand new iMac 27" last week.
I tried to transfer data (musdic & photos) via Thunderbolt, but i did not run, my system always
tries to transfer data via WLAN, but that would last more than 80 hours.
I tried to get some help from the Apple Support, but unfortunately they couldn't help me.
A promised call-back from the next higher support-level has not been done.
Does anybody know what the problem might be.
The Thunderbolt-cable is brand new.Instead of using Migration Assistant, the best way is to use the Target Disk Mode, so you will save headaches (Migration Assistant creates a new user with the transferred data).
To do this, just connect both Macs with the Thunderbolt cable, and then, start the MacBook Pro holding the T key, so a Thunderbolt or FireWire icon should appear on the display. After that, go to the iMac, open Finder, and the hard drive of the MacBook Pro will appear on the Finder sidebar as an external drive, under "Devices". Just access to it, go to the folders with your iTunes and iPhoto libraries, and copy them to the iMac -
Recently, I installed Yosemite on my MacBook Air. After that I had no sound. Not even the start up chime. In Sound preferences there are no input devices and no output devices. I have had three meetings with Apple support with no results. Can anyone help? This seems to be a regular problem.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:

2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:

screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

What the **** is happening to Apple Support?
I'm trying to find answers to problems since Yosemite (and upgrade) has been installed. Does anyone know the best way to deal with Apple Support in the UK? I can't get to see someone in store until next Monday 24th and have been cut-off (network disconnect - not my end) via live chat.

Is Apple really thinking about dropping Firewire supprt? I've seen many, many internet articles on it. On Macrumors they mentioned that the new intel iBooks line will drop it completely.

What makes it even more convincing is that the MacBook Pro has no Firewire 800(not as bad because it wasn't a prominent technology anyway), but the fact that it only has one Firewire 400!
How will Apple drop Firewire when its the only port (lack of a better word) that can boot Mac OS X. Booting from external HD, using Target Disk Mode, and connecting computers with Firewire to transfer files are a few things that make Macs so easy to use and also easy to fix.
Maybe they'll have to make USB compatible with all these aspects. Without it, I can't see how they can totally drop Firewire support.
-Abe-Forgive me, but I think you need to get the facts before complaining that someone else doesn't have the facts. I never said that the intel Macs don't have firewire 400. I said:

Maybe you should read more carefully before accusing someone of a crime you've committed.
I'm am not saying that firewire is dead and am not making sensationalist claims. I just find it odd that Apple has dropped its firewire 800 port and one of its 400 ports on its high end MacBook Pro and hasn't mentioned anything about it. If you believe this is "myth" just check the tech specs of the Powerbook and the MacBook Pro.

I was told by apple support the thunderbolt connection could be used to connect an 800 fire wire. Is that correct?

Virtual PC Emulator that supports Firewire (IEEE1394)
Does anyone know of a Virtual PC emulator that supports the firewire port (aka IEEE 1394) ? I know Boot Camp does, but I'm looking for something that I can in the Mac OS Partition.
Both Parallels and Fusion support firewire.

hi i use an old black 60G photo/video ipod. Suddenly it won't recharge, when connected to the pc it emits several cicks in serires and then it shows at intervals a low battery signs and another sign, a sad faced ipod icon with the apple support email address. I am having essentialy the same problem, but my iPod came from a PC and is now on a PC. The person who gave me the iPod didn't give me the wall adapter piece, so I bought a "Griffin" brand that was said to be compatible with this model. When I first plugged it into the wall, the Apple appeared with a bar underneath as though it was loading the new software. When the bar got to the end, the "plug into the wall" icon reappeared, but when I plug it in to the wall now, that icon is the only thing that shows, even after resetting and trying to run diagnostics.
When I doc the iPod on a charger I have or plug the USB into my computer and "reset" it, a battery with a charge icon appears, but there is no "motion" in the icon so it doesn't appear to be charging. The screen eventually goes back to the apple then to the "plug it into the wall" icon. HELP!!! Is is possible the wall adapters isn't the right one? Should I be charging through a firewire cable instead (which I also don't have...)?

Apple Support - Bootcamp Downloads
I have had a bad experience with Apple Support concerning the install of Windows on my MacPro5,1. Though they spent time with me, they did not fix my problem. Well they sort of did, that's how I got here. The first person I spoke to was out of their depth when it came to installing Windows, so I was transferred to a "Senior Consultant". He went through a few things and used all the cliches and in the end he just blamed my wireless router and said there is nothing to be done. Well thanks mate! If this person spent some time in this forum he may have learned something from you guys. I have and I thank you for it.
Being a pain-in-the-butt kind of guy I persisted, and was lucky enough to get a lady called Grace (an apt name) as my next support person. Now the most dangerous people in this world are the people "Who don't know they don't know", the Senior Consult guy for example. Grace knew she didn't know, so she put me on hold and tried to find out. Well she put me onto a site that then lead me here and it seems the first part of my problem is solved. I am now downloading the Windows support package for my Mac.
The hard part of this excercise, other then being fobbed-off by people in Apple Support, was finding out which Windows drivers for Mac I should download. Grace sent me to http://www.cafe-encounter.net/p824/bootcamp-drivers-direct-download-of-bootcampe sd-pkg and that is where the answer lies. At this page, if you scroll down to point 6, there is a list of urls that show each package available. Click on each until you find your Model Identifier Number and that is the package that you should download. I then came here and User Moof66, in a post on July 2nd, 2012, lists the download links. Champion bloke that Moof666. I just clicked on the download that matched my MacPro5,1 from the site supplied by Grace and I'm a happy camper.
Now I have to work-out how to install the package after the fabulously fast Apple servers finally deign to complete my download.......Back to the forum to find out.Good. My son's boyfriend (don't worry it's not a matter of "Father Like Son") is a Mac freak. He was a beta-tester back in 1854 or something, and he has more Mac gear than you can poke a stick at. He has told me the same thing about OWC, but the first rule is verification and then verification.
I have in my shopping basket at OWC a New Tech(?) HD caddy which does all the stuff. Firewire 800 included. Keeping in mind that I need to keep one Firewire port available for an Audio Interface. Also an OWC Extreme 240Gb SSD. See why I need to know how this will all pan out space-wise? I have the bottomn of the range Mac Pro and I need to upgrade it and my wallet has my wife's hand in it, so there is a limit. I don't have $1,000.00 for the bigger drive. We have to keep in mind that this box will really only have the following installed.
Windows
SONAR including all the synths and other software.
Pro Tools and it shares all the synths with SONAR
Final Cut pro
Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
MS Office
All the little do-dads that come with Mountain Lion and the stuff you need to make it run, like iGetter and Flash.
Everything will run in Mac except Windows, SONAR (and Office initially).
My hard-drive set-up currently is : OS Drive 1TB, Audio Drive 1TB, Sample Drive 1TB and Media Drive 2TB. All are 7200rpm except the Media Drive which is 5400rpm. Reason I have to use this at the moment is that during the Mac set-up two 2TB drives would not work after they were taken out of the PC and then formatted in the Mac. I was really happy!!!!
The Sample and Audio drives are for the sole use of the DAWs. One for storing audio and the other for samples, hence their names. This serves these purposes. One to take the pressure off the OS drive for speed/latency and to store all the big files. They have to be 7200rpm really as the cycle-rate is constant and high all the time. The cycle rate precludes them being SSD (they wouldn't last two minutes in my opinion) and the noise of Raptors is far too high in the studio, as well as all that high cycle-rate at 10,000rpm would be murderous. Some guys run 'em, but not me.
I am quickly learning that there are 7200rpm drives and then there are 7200rpm drives. Some research needed here. I have only bought on price before, and brand to a lessor extent. Tended to favour WD, but now that two have karked-it, I have found out to get them replaced under their 5 year warranty I have to send them to Malaysia. That's BULLSHINE!
I hope not to have to use much more space than that except for Final Cut Pro which will need it's own 2TB drive and a 4TB drive for back-up. Unfortunately they will have to be external because I am out of bays. Can't use external for Final Cut Pro without a Firewire caddy anyway.

Why does appple not support Firewire to the 5th Gen ipods?
I just picked up a new 5th gen iPod and am upset that it does not allow for connection to my older G3 iMac via Firewire (as did my older iPod Photo 40).
I can connect it using usb 1.0 but that connection is painfully slow. Why not support Firewire conectivity? Perhaps Apple wants to force me to buy a new computer?

While it is true there is nothing you can update on your computer to make the iPod work on a Firewire port, it has everything to do with the fact that the iPod no longer supports the HARDWARE (i.e. chipset) for Firewire transfer in the iPod itself. It has been this way for well over a year now.

Extending your flawed logic further, I used to be able to use SCSI drives, ADP keyboards and Mice, AUII network ports, RS-422 serial ports, etc. so should I still be able to use those now? How's that floppy drive working out on your Mac? Used to be those as well, so I guess your Mac has one now?

Yes, USB1.1 ports are very slow which is why all Mac computers for MANY years now, have all come with USB2 ports for high speed transfer. While I know it ***** when you have an older computer that doesn't support the latest in higher speed ports, but you can not expect Apple to support all port types forever on every device and machine.
When the original iMacs came out, everyone moaned and complained about the loss of a floppy drive and all the devices that no longer would work, like tablets, because there were no ADB ports and all the external SCSI drives that couldn't be used. Guess what, everyone got over it and moved on. Now you would laugh it Apple put a floppy drive into a new machine.

I have a problem with wifi in my iphone 4s, i already try everything and download latest version 7.1(11D167) but wifi switch is not working, its my humble request to Apple support team that pls resolve this problem as soon as possible because its a prestiage of Apple Company.

Apple Support for FCE HD - $200 per call???
i had what was probably a minor issue with editing in final cut express hd today. So naturally, i called applecare. They told me that it had been past the 90 days given to us for support from the point of purchase. Fine. However, the apple support representative went on to tell me that Applecare does NOT support pro applications and that i have to pay $199 per incident? I paid $299 for the product itself! Last i checked, i-pods were selling pretty well and i don't think steve jobs needs that money! Is apple serious? Where do they get off charging $200 for a ONE TIME PHONE CALL? Just because FCE HD is a "pro" application, apple can't assume that everyone who purchases this product is a "pro" from the start!
Where else am i supposed to get phone technical support for FCE HD??These forums are here to give you technical advice. Admittedly it is not over the phone but it is FREE and lasts for ever.
Also you will have the collective knowledge of numerous people not just the one "expert" you happen to be speaking to.

Can too much RAM memory in a late 2011 model macbook pro lead to kernel panic? That is what I was told by a senior supervisor from apple support who troubleshot this issue.First noticed this problem in Dec 2014 while using a private wifi at a relative's home. Did not occur again until Feb1 using a public wifi at a hotel. Never happened on my private wifi network until last night attempting to use airplay. ( have used airplay before without issue). Late 2011 MacBook Pro running 10.9.5; 2.4 GHz Intel core i7, 16 GB DDR3,AMD Radeon HD 6770m 1024 MB graphic card. The laptop came with 8GB RAM and I installed 8 GB about 2 years ago for some reason I cannot remember... probably because I thought the system was slowing down a little. I know that sounds silly. I do not run multiple programs at a time except I leave 6-8 website tabs open simultaneously. I don't photo or video edit. I would describe my use as "light" based on reading these blogs.I had purchased apple support and spent hours on the phone with them in early Feb moving up through support and senior support to sending logs to the "engineers." Of course lots of things were done some of which I am sorry to report I cannot recall their technical definitions. Deleted 3rd party apps/programs; re-worked start up menu; re-installed operating system; reset " this, that and the other" using acrobatic simultaneous key strokes both in and out of safe mode..Anyway the results from the engineers came back and they suggested that if it happened again I was to remove the 8GB of RAM I had installed as the system was getting confused as to which chip to use.( that is my interpretation of what was said..prob dumbed down for me)...Anyway 1 day after these pronouncements came down I read that Apple had agreed to fix graphics cards in some late model 2011 MBPs. I felt this was unlikely to be the issue given all that had been done including an extended hardware test but called the Senior Support Supervisor I was working with to ask him to make sure. He never phoned me back. Should I go to the trouble of removing 8GB of RAM from my laptop? Of course I will try it as the alternative is a new computer.Blogs read that this model can support 16GB but Apple didn't test for it. Senior Supervisor claims this is my trouble. Does that make sense? Not to me....but it is clear to all my level of knowledge. Can a malfunctioning graphics card be missed by an extended hardware test? I appreciate comments.

Downloaded Mt Lion Yesterday and my Tool bar has disappeared. I can still access the individual tools but cannot see my header. I used 'help' and did what it suggested. slected 'hide tool bar' and then 'show toolbar'. I also restarted etc.
