Apple System Preferences iTunes ??

Just realized my System Preferences does not have an iTunes icon in it as is indicated in several on-line tutorials.
I am having no problems just playing my "Play lists" but I haven't tried xeveral features such as iBooks, etc.
I would like to be set up correctly,
Thank you
Ed

Thanks Jim, I hoped that was the answer. A few months ago I replaced my iMac G5 with a new one and have found several places I messed up a little, fortunately nothing bad.
Added an iPad which really brings iTunes into play so have been reading tutorials, Several refer to Systems pref pane and ..
appreciate it,

  • System Preferences, itunes and safari not working. Please Help?

Whenever i click on system preferences whether it be in the applications folder or in the dock, the window doesn't show. my system preferences is partly working because the very top menu bar with the little apple sign changes its menus to suit what system preferences has like system preferences written next to the little apple.
its the same with my itunes and my safari.
my menu bar changes when i click on itunes and if i press the play button on my keyboard i can hear music but no windows are coming up
the menu bars change as if the applications are open but no windows are coming up.
if anybody has any idea as to why its doing this and how i can fix it, please tell me.

Are you showing an signal when the SIM is inserted into the iPhone? Making calls and sending/receiving messages are two different things. Calls use the cellular side of things, messages uses data. I'm surprised that is all T-Mobile would do to check out your account is to test your SIM. What if they look at your account, is it provisioned correctly?
You can try to reset the phone. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo. The phone will reboot. See if it works. If not, try to reset network settings. Go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. The phone will reboot. Check they if it is working. If not, then you can make an appointment with the Genius Bar at the Apple store, but I still lean heavily that the problem is with the carrier.

  • Technical reference about the apple system preferences files

    Hi Community,
is there a technical reference or at least a short description about apples system preferences files in Snow Leopard available? I don't mean the structure of references files as a whole but the meaning and functionality of a specific plist.
    Thx & Bye Tom

Some apps may automatically add themselves to this list, controlled by their
own preferences. But that is indeed the preference that controls that list.
I'm confused because after this experience I found a lot of tutorials, documentations and forum discussions which describes the loginwindow.plist as the responsible plist for the login items. My suspicion was that the loginitems.plist rebuild process take notice about the content of loginwindow.plist, which is in the root of the matter the same as in loginitems.plist.
But I couldn't answer this question competent and that's the reason why I'm searching for detailed informations about this "forgotten" loginitems.plist. Forgotten? Try to search for it. Its unbeleavable, 99% of the hits you get belongs to the loginwindow.plist and the description sounds very similar to the functionality of loginitems.plist. But maybe you're right and the applications try to put themselves back into the startup item list. But this doesn't answer the relation between this two plists.

But dictation is enabled and works. Just not shown in system prefs. Where did it go?

    No "Dictation & Sppech" panel?
    Quit System Preferences
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library"
then go to Preferences folder and delete this file.
    /Preferences/com.apple.system preferences .plist
    Relauch System Preferences.

    Hey all,
I have reset the pram, ran cocktail, used disk utility,
    repaired permissions...
apple system preferences hangs upon launch. installers
do the same. utilities like address book, stuffit, won't
even spark. anybody have a tip to help me out of this?
i updated to 10.3.9 months ago, this is a new issue.
    thanks.

Did you delete any fonts located in /System/Library/Fonts? Various Apple applications require certain fonts or they will not launch, or launch with nothing visible. Check that folder and be sure you have all these:
    Apple LiGothic Medium.dfont
    AppleGothic.dfont
    AquaKanaBold.otf
    AquaKanaRegular.otf
    Courier.dfont
    Geneva.dfont
    Helvetica.dfont
    Keyboard.dfont
    LastResort.dfont
    LucidaGrande.dfont
    Monaco.dfont
    Osaka.dfont
    OsakaMono.dfont
    Symbol.dfont
    Times.dfont
    ZapfDingbats.dfont
If you do, it's also possible that one or more of them are corrupted, and Font Book does not report this with any reliability. Your best option would be to reinstall just those fonts from your OS X install disc. One other possible solution would be to reinstall the 10.3.9 Combo Update, which would overwrite any damaged or corrupted files.
Before you do any of those things, you should try creating a test account and see if all these applications work in that account. If so, that would isolate the problem to something in your account.

  • In MountainLion System Preferences, "iCloud", "Mail, Contacts, and Calenders", and "Software Update" all want to open in 32 bit mode.  Security and Privacy won't open either.

    As stated in the header,
    iCloud
    Mail, Contacts, and Calenders
    Software Update
all want to open in 32 bit mode.  Then when System Preferences quits and relaunches IN 32 bit mode, I get a dialog box saying "You can't open (pick one) preferences because it doesn't work on an Intel-based Mac."  Moreover, Security and Privacy does the same thing only without the song and dance about quitting and reopening.
Whaaaaat???!!!  I've never owned anything BUT an Intel Mac.
The "open in 32 bit mode" is not, and has never been checked in "Get Info"
I tried going to ~Library/Preferences and tossing all com.apple.system preferences files and rebooting.  No joy.
It actually looks like some joker has included a bunch of PPC preference panes in my copy of MountainLion, except some of them are new to this OS.
My hardware is a mid 2010 13" MacBook Pro with4 gb of RAM, and a 500 gb hard drive, in three seperate partitions, running three Mac operating systems, one at a time.  I have SnowLeopard in a small partition because I still have a few things that don't run in Lion/ML.  Lion is still my main use machine in the largest partition, and when ML came out, I redistributed most of the unused space into a 3rd partition into which I did a clean install of ML in it's own partition so I could work through the growing pains without compromising my main computer.  I'm glad I did it that way, but I DO want to get ML working properly, and I can't do that if I can't authorize third party software.  Gatekeeper is currently in the way, and I can't get it to move.

I dunno, that doesn't make any sense to me.
I just shut down and rebooted into the SnowLeopard partition and took a peek at the preference panes.  There are only 3 that run in 32 bit only.  They are all 3rd party, and none of the prefpanes are non Intel.  Like I said, I have never owned a PPC machine.  Anyhow, SnowLeopard doesn't even have an iCloud prefpane, or a combined mail, contacts, and calenders prefpane, and the ML security and privacy prefpane is all new as well.  The software update prefpane is Intel and 64 bit in both SnowLeopard and Lion.
As to the triple boot, unless I'm totally mistaken, what I have here is, in essence, 3 seperate descrete computers in one box.  All using the same hardware. but one at a time.  I wouldn't know how to get more than one running at the same time, without using a virtual machine, even if I wanted to.  (Which I don't)  I do sometimes transfer files from one to another using the shared folder, but other than that, they do not interact.  How could ML system preferences be trying to launch prefpanes from a totally different machine?

  • System preferences locks up

Changing desktop pictures locks system preferences.

Re: Changing desktop pictures locks system preferences. Info: MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3)   This is very similar to my issue:
When I select System Preferences from the Apple System Preferences menu, both laptop and extended monitor screens immediately jump to the Change background/screen windows and locks me there with the spinning beach ball, while the text on the Change screens reads, "Loading ....".  Then I have to move to Activity Monitor and Force Quit System Preferences which indicates in parens "System Preferences no longer responding."
    I have tried LInc's solution re finding both plist files:  Caches/com.apple.systempreferences  which I cannot find;
I have found and moved the following item to the Desktop:
    Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Retesting by launching System Preferences again produced the same results. I then replace the Desktop's plist file where it came from.
BTW:  The standard Utility Disk checks indicate no errors.
    I'm stuck. Any more ideas?
    Thanks.

  • I accedently deleted my System Preferences

Durring some reorganization, where I thought i was just deleting an icon, I apparently deleted my system preferences. If I got to apple -- system preferences, nothing happens, and when I search for it using spotlight I get nothing. Any ideas on what I can do. I really want to avoid having to reinstall os x.

    TAlex88,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You may be able to use Pacifist to reinstall System Preferences.
If that method is not what you want, in my opinion an Archive and Install, followed by a Combo Update is no big deal.

  • HT4901 iCloud app can't be launched from system preferences.

iCloud app can't be launched from system preferences and screens an error to be reported to Apple:

    Parent Process:  launchd [134]
The rest of apps can be openned but not iCloud. I have tried to log in into iCloud from the web and my iPhone and it works fine.
Any help on how to solve this problem from the macbook?
    Thanks

Does it open in the guest user?  If it's not enabled, you can do it from the apple >> system preferences >> users and groups.  Open the lock, select the guest user account and check the box to allow logging into it.

  • Changing desktop pictures locks system preferences

Re MacBook Pro laptop (OS 10.7.5)
Problem: Changing desktop pictures locks System Preferences
If I try to open System Preferences, I get windows for the Change Desktop/Background and the whirling beach ball begins until I go to Activities Monitor to Force Quit System Preferences, which informs me that my "System Preferences is no longer responding."
I have no trouble booting my Mac,
checked my Disk Utility informing me that there are no errors,
    checked Permissions without errors,
went to Users>"my name">Preferences>found the plist for com.apple.systempreferences, moved it to my desktop, tried the Apple System Preferences option with same result. Returned plist .  Hmm, just noticed that I have com.apple.systempreferences with one directly after Library ( i.e., not in any folder), and the other in the Library>Preferences folder. Could that be the foul up?  Perhaps one of these plists is misplaced.
    Any suggestions?

First follow the instructions in this support article.
If an iPhoto or Aperture library is the source of your desktop pictures, it may need to be rebuilt, or you may need to update the application to the latest version.
    Otherwise, continue as below.
    Back up all data.
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
              Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following item, if it exists:
              Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
and move the following items to the Desktop, if they exist:
              Application Support/Dock/desktoppicture.db
              Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Launch System Preferences and test. If you still have the issue, put the items you moved to the Desktop back where they came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the items.

  • System Preferences accidently deleted

I have come home to find my flat mate has managed t delete my system preferences somehow. I have tried a few things suggeted by other forums but really need some proper help. \
I do not have the disks to go with my imac and do not have a nother mac available to copy and paste the system preferencces from.
    Please help!!

Do you mean the icon in the dock got accidentally deleted? You can put it back by opening Apple () > System preferences. Once it is open it will be in the dock temporarily. Go to to the dock icon and *control-click>options>keep in Dock*.

  • System Preferences pane opens off-screen

What can I do to have the system preferences panel open in the center of the screen instead of off the screen?
Whether I open it by Apple->System Preferences or open any other module within System Preferences (such as Network Preferences) it opens in the lower left-hand corner with 80% of the window off the screen. Then I have to drag it back to the center to use it.
I used to have dual-monitors, but now only use the laptop screen.

The position you have the System Prefs on your screen when you close it should be stored in the plist file.
    /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
Thus, if you trash the plist it really ought to be created with the default position, but even that shouldn't actually be necessary: when you move System Prefs window to where you want and close it the new position should be recorded in the plist and used next time you open it.
The only thing I can think of is perhaps something is funky in the way your account is considering the dispaly. Launch the Displays preferences and try clicking the "Gather Windows" button and the "Detect Displays" button, check that Rotate is Standard, and also check the Arrangement tab to make sure it shows one display with the menu bar.

  • System preferences big problem

    Hi,
this is a giant issue. Every time I try to open certain Preferences, I just get this error:
If I click OK, the window restarts and I continue getting this message forever, like a Möbius strip. This happens with:
    Desktop & Screensaver
    Security & Privacity
    Notifications
    iCloud
    Mail & Contacts
    Date and Time
    Software Updates
    Dictation & Speech
    Startup Disk
If I just knew that someone else is getting this same error, that would be a relief, because this is very strange...
And Time Machine in particular shows me this:
    I'm so confused...
    Gracias

    Quit System Preferences
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library"
    and delete these files/folders:
    /Preferences/com.apple.system preferences .plist
    /Preferences/By Host/com.apple.systempreferences.xxx.plist of them)
    Also,/Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
    Relaunch SP and test.

  • System preferences- desktop/screensaver pane, freezing

when I open apple system preferences pane, desktop and screen saver. in order to change either the screen saver or the desktop background the cursor becomes jittery then freezes then the whole system freezes. Any suggestions anyone?

Hi Peter, and a warm welcome to the forums!
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, move these files to the Desktop.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.<12digitHex Number>.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    Then reboot once more.
