Apple trying to fill up my Windows hard disk

Why do Apple insist on installing hundreds of sub-folders on my system for BOTH iTunes & Quicktime - they all look like "da.lproj" and I think have something to do with language resources for multiple country support.
When the installer is run, you are asked to specify a language/country - so why don't they JUST install the files for that language; instead of blindly installing the whole ruddy lot?
Not only files & folders installed un-neccessarily but the registry is cluttered up with a reference to every single folder in several places.
Anyone would think they are trying to sabotage our WIndows machines to try and "persuade" us that the "Mac" way is better.
Nigel

Just sloppy programming. I wish it was just confined to apple. I've often thought that apple get away with a lot more than the likes of Miscrosnot as apple users are "creative" and hence do not know, care or understand what lies beneath.

  • Format a windows hard disk for mac

    Hi,
    I am trying to format an external windows hard disk for use with my new Mac.  I am using Disk Utility.  The disk was NTFS formatted, I erased it into HFS+ (mentioning that the operation was done in less than a minute).  I tried this many times but it still took the same time.  Does not formatting a disk take a long time? Or this is the way it is done in Lion.
    Thank you. (New to Mac)

    Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.app (in Mac OS). Open the app.
    Select the disk (choose 'erase' if it its formatted already), and format as 'Mac OS extended (journaled). Click 'format' (or 'erase', depending on which option you are given).

  • My iPad is filling up my PowerBook hard disk. Where can I find the sync Photo file to delete it ?

    Hi
    My iPad is filling up my PowerBook hard disk. Where can I find the sync Photo file to delete it ?
    Copying over photos via iTunes/iPhoto - there is a back-up file created (I can not turn it off) and it's now filling my PB-Pro.
    So I need to find it and trash it and start over.
    - Where is it located ?
    - What is it's name ?
    Yours Bengt W

    Thank You
    I found my iPhoto library
    ctrl-clicked on it and opened package/content
    here I found the iPod photo cashe folder
    copyed this to a safe hard disk
    then deleting it's content
    and my memory/free space on boot drive is back

  • Connection failed when trying to connect to external Lacie hard disk

    I have an external Lacie hard disk which sits under and is connected to my Airport Extreme base station. I access that volume by using the 'Connect to Server' option in the finder, and I can see the Lacie drive when I get to the stage where I click to 'browse' and then click the Network icon.
    However, today instead of connecting as usual (after asking for password authorisation, etc.) I now get a temporary window message saying:
    "Looking up, "x1-6........local..." I guess the IP address?
    After 3 minutes I then get the following error message:
    CONNECTION FAILED
    The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again.
    Yesterday I had a problem with my MacPro while trying to access info on the Lacie volume and with no response from the MacPro to shut down, I had to hold the start button down to get it to shut down. I then turned the Airport Express and Lacie disk off at the main plug powerpoint (I forgot to dismount the Lacie volume from another Mac running!). Hoping this would reset everything, but now this problem has happened!
    Any help or advice on this would be much appreciated as I hold some key financial and business info on the Lacie volume and I can't access it now!!!
    Thanks

    Hi Rick
    That's worked!
    I did reboot Airport Extreme initially (had to switch off power to AEBS and Lacie disk as looks like there is no power switch on the AEBS?...and tried, but same problem. But then tried this again and all now works as before.
    Thanks for your advice and the direct connection tip, which I was considering doing anyway if the conventional route didn't work.
    Phew!

  • Error when trying to install Mountain Lion - says hard disk is damaged :(

    I downloaded and installed Mountain Lion on my iMac today - without any problems. But when I downloaded it to my Macbook pro (bought 2010) I get an error message telling me the installation cannot continue due to hard disk error My harddisk was fine before the installation, to my knowledge ...
    Of course I tried disk utility (during the installation) and it tells me the disk needs to be repaired but I can´t choose "Repair disk" since it is grey (no write permissions it says). What can I do? I really need help!!!

    I rarely post, however, because of a major screw up with Mountain Lion, I will.  I have been using mac computers since 1987, have obviously installed and upgraded multiple OS new and upgrades and never, I mean never had a problem with any of them, until now.  The install stalled with the message that the hard disk needed repair.  I thought all of my data was lost, except for time machine backup, which was not as current as it should have been.  Losing that data would have been a royal pain.
    Went through the restore OS from Time Machine, then tried to repair the disk with apple disk repair utility.  Not repairable.  Why?  I still don't have a clue.  After reading multiple threads, decided to go ahead and buy DiskWarrior.  This was a weird experienc.  Loaded it onto external hard drive, hooked my MacBook Pro as Target disk.  Loaded in DiskWarrior as hardware probelm.  ????  Immediately went online to see what advice about this message.  Looked like a massive coincidence had hit my laptop.  Worked perfectly until loading Mountain Lion, the decided to have hard disk melt down.  Suddenly, DiskWarrior indicated it was ready to rebuild my directory.  The hardware warning was gone.  A few minutes later, directory repaired.  Rebooted, same problem.  Can't load OS X, need to repair hard disk.  Apple disk repair still unable to repair disk.  Used DiskWarrior, repaired it no problem.
    Deleted original OS 10.8 dmg.  Rebooted and downloaded fresh copy of OS 10.8.  This time install went flawlessly.  Mountain Lion transferred all info flawlessly.  Mid 2009 MacBook Pro running flawlessly and actually more smoothly now than in Lion.
    1.  I think original download was somehow corrupted and that is what screwed up the disk directory.
    2.  I do not know why apple Disk Utility would not repair the disk and Disk Warrior would.  Expensive fix, but ultimately worthwhile.  Did it mysefl and did not have to mess with "Genius" bar.
    3.  I will never go so long without backup again.  That was a big mistake.
    My advice:
    1.  Be sure you have smooth download of entire Mountain Lion file, if not, start over.  My download was paused a couple of times.
    2.  If the install is messed up and you need Disk Repair, buy DiskWarrior and repair directory, it works flawlessly.  If it initially says your disk has hardware problem, wait a few minutes while it finishes entire evaluation.  It may well disappear like mine did, then actually repair the directories without a problem.
    3.  Be sure you have deleted old OS 10.8 Install file and load fresh one.
    4.  Install OS 10.8 and you should be OK.
    5.  Good luck.
    Mountain Lion seems to have some problems, but many of them may be due to server overload at apple, delayed download with incorporated unrecognized code problems.  If there is any delay, start over and get a smooth download.
    Disk Utility is too light weight.  Apple needs to beef it up.  This is my biggest complaint.  Apple utility should be able to fix disks.  We should not have to spend $100 to fix a disk, but there you are.
    Once fixed however, back to usual beautiful, flawless apple experience.

  • Trying to salvage iCal data after hard disk failure!

    Hi all,
    I had a major hard disk failure recently, and also discopvered that my regular backups weren't including my iCal data! Eek! All that info I use for tax records gone!
    Anyway, the wonderful DiskWarrior managed to salvage a drive that was not visible to the naked eye and it recovered various pieces of information. Many of these pieces seem to be re-packaged, or should I say 'Un-packaged'. I have a heap of folders of files that are probably supposed to be within another file structure to be useful to iCal.
    I have a few folders with very long names (such as EBD6EF28-1595-49DD-8AEA-8525C9F2CB55.calendar) these have the corestorage.ics
    Info.plist
    Index files in them, so appear to be the /App support/iCal folders, with a file extension added?!
    Also I have folders called the same as the .calendar folders above (but no extension) and these are filled with events like this:
    FEAD3FA1-FC1B-4D5B-8C3B-2AB72EA87DF7%2F-.icalevent
    FDDD239C-6B90-11DA-B375-00039383DFDE%2F-.icalevent
    In textEdit I can see that these are all my events... so near and yet so far. If all else fails I will store these for records.
    I can get Calendars to appear but iCal 2.0.5 won't open or imprt the event files...
    Can anyone suggest how I might restore said structure so that iCal can import them?
    Kind regards
    Rosie

    Well, the structure of an ics file is easy to get (drag an event to desktop and open it with a text editor) and is well-described on the web, but I don't know about the structure of your icalevents, other than what we can see in the plist editor. After trimming out the time zone info, I get this for an ics file:
    BEGIN:VEVENT
    SEQUENCE:3
    TRANSP:OPAQUE
    UID:5E87B2F7-CF39-447E-B252-B3BF5F9C4A61
    DTSTART;TZID=Europe/Dublin:20081122T093000
    DTSTAMP:20081030T004304Z
    SUMMARY:IPF Thurles
    CREATED:20081110T210926Z
    DTEND;TZID=Europe/Dublin:20081122T140000
    END:VEVENT
    According to Fat Cat's web page PlistEdit Pro is scriptable, so it might be possible to do something with Applescript.

  • How to rename the "Windows" hard disk icon in the boot options screen

    I have been able to rename the "Recovery HD" hard disk icon in the boot options screen by finding its mount mount and running
    sudo bless --folder "/Volumes/Recovery HD" -label "Mac Recovery".  When I do this for the Windows object, it is not renamed, even when the Windows partition that it represents is formatted FAT32.

    Update 2013-05-08  sudo bless --folder "/Volumes/Win OS"  -label "Win OS" fails with "Could not write scale 1 bitmap label file".  "Win OS" is the name of the Windows folder in Finder.

  • Time Machine filling up my primary hard disk?

    I have a 2 month old Intel iMac with a 1 TB drive and about 300 GB of data on it. I ran time machine and got a full back up to an external 1 TB drive and all worked great. Then I learned about excluding files so I deleted my TM backup on the external drive, configured TM to exclude system files, and turned TM back on.
    It gives me the count down to the next backup and then begins and I get "Time Machine Error". This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 1099.6 GB but only 926.2 GB are available.
    I did this step over a few times and tried various things knowing that I only had about 300 GB of data. But then I looked again and found that my 1 TB drive was full; only 2 GB is available. There must be 700 GB of files hiding somewhere because I can't find it with the finder. My next step will be to use the terminal and look around, but it would be easier if someone knew where TM creates its temp files.
    Any idea on how to get rid of TM's temp files?

    oh my bad. I hate it when people don't read posts carefully. i guess I am guilty of that as well. I'll look into this, but are you sure these are "hidden" temp files. have you done the obvious stuff like repair permissions in disk util, holding down option while you empty the trash, that sort of thing.
    (EDIT)
    Your best bet is terminal. but you could have used the "Delete all backups of ((whatever you decided that you wanted excluded))" feature in TM instead of deleting your entire TM backup.

  • Can you clone your old Windows XP hard disk?

    Hi,
    After many months, one of my best friends finally converted to the Mac. She bought an iMac (Intel Core Duo 2.16GHz/1G RAM/Leopard) and she is delighted.
    Now, she needs her Windows Software for her business (which is not available for the Mac) and therefore wants to install Windows under Boot Camp. She currently has XP SP2 (Home Edition).
    Instead of re-installing everything from scratch, is it possible to "clone" the Windows hard disk and then copy this clone into Boot Camp???
    Thanks in advance

    Sorry, just realised this is the wrong question for this part of the forum...
    Ignore, I'll post in the correct one.
    Apologies again

  • HELP!!! Constant freezing, Bugged updates, Repair failure, and No Hard disk

    Hi, I have had my iMac for just about a year now. It has never had any major problems up until now. One day, when i was using a downloaded non-Mac application that I had had for a while, my iMac freezes. Only the curser can move now. I pushed the power button putting the computer to sleep, then, waking it up again. All back to normal and I didn't think anything about it.
    A couple of days later, it starst happening again, but with Mac applications too. It to the point to where i had to restart my computer by holing down the power button (aka. "the last resort"). It gets so bad to the point that I cannot use my computer anymore. The only thing I can do when it's frozen is move the curser, nothing else. So I take it to my local Apple Store. Guess what, it works perfectly when I turn it on there! Ha Ha Ha No. But yes it does work which is bad because he cannot fix a working computer. He repairs the permissions on the computer anyway, just to make sure. When I get home I power up my computer and it works aweful. Oh, and I forgot to mention earlier that it takes about 10-25 minutes to get to the login screen! Every time. So now I wait, without a computer for about a month until Christmas. I get the Drive Genius software by Prosoft for Christmas. So I use it to try to fix my iMac. I repaired everything possible to repair. So now the computer is working a lot better, but there are still some things that freeze. Such as, closing a window, or quitting an application, checking my email, and emtying the trash. A few weeks later I was calling an Apple support agent about a different product whitch was accually my fault but he gave me some suggestions to fix my computer. So I did the hardware test like he told me to and it did nothing. I did and archive and install and it worked!. So when you do one, there are like 20 things to update. I updated OS X first, then some other needed updates, when those were done and restarted I had planned on doing all of the security updates. On my second wave, the one right before the security updates, I restared my computer when the finished and then when I came back into the room, the screen was blue and had that little swirly gray loading thing. I left it on that for 6 or 7 hours hoping it would finally go through, but it did not. Back to the archive and install. I performed it once again and decided to change the order of the updates to, OS X, then all of the security ones, then everything else. it worked all of it. But, it eventually started freezing again. This time it was real freezing, the kind where your curser becomes a little "wheel of fortune" thing. BANKRUPT! I figured it was a bugged update because both failures happened close after the updates. It is archive and install time again. So I shut down my computer using "the last resort" while I am busy buying vowels and solving the puzzle. So I put the CD in and start. It took a little too long for the CD to find my hard disc. It made me nervous. I start the install but have to go. When I come bock to my house, the thing says "install failed please restart and try again". So I tried. but it never finds my hard disk. Its gone. Poof! I get the "no startup disk" floder sign on starup. One thing is that my Drive Genius software detects my disk easily. And that concludes my fairytale adventure.
    Thanks and I hope somebody can help,
    Jamey

    Hey, thanks for responding. Well, first of all how do i a PMU? I have connected a logitech L/R click mouse with a scroll wheel, an Apple keyboard with an Apple brand keyboard USB extention cord, an iPod connector cord (no iPod connected), an HP PSC 1200 series all-in-one printer, and some non-Apple speakers. All of the computers in my house are on a airport express wireless internet system. At the Apple store all I had was an Apple mouse, Apple keyboard. Would it make any difference how I plugged these in? I have a battery backup system. Plugged into that are the following: (under battery backup and surge protector) my computer and my printer. (Under just surge protector) another power strip with surge protecctor and isolated outlets. On that are my speakers, my cell phone charger, my neon clock, and my desk light.
    Thanks, I hope this information helps you help me resolve my problem,
    Jamey

  • Problems with indexing files from my hard disk

    Hi everybody,
    I'm a newbie to oracle and i'm trying to index files from my hard disk with oracle text. After i created a simple text file (path: 'c:\tmp\test.txt') and filled it with a short text, i executed the following lines without an error message:
    grant connect, resource, ctxapp to myuser;
    create table myuser.testtab(id number primary key, text BFILE);
    create or replace directory test_dir as 'c:\tmp';
    grant read on directory test_dir to myuser;
    insert into myuser.testtab (id, text) values (1, BFILENAME('test_dir','test.txt'));
    create index myuser.idx_test on myuser.testtab(text) indextype is ctxsys.context;
    the record in the table testtab is stored, but the index table is empty. After i tried to get information about the bfile with java i got an SQLException with the Error-Code ORA-22285 after executing the following lines:
    BFILE file = null;
    try{
    rset = stmt.executeQuery("select text from testtab where id = 1");
    if (rset.next()) {

    System.out.println("Result from fileExists: " + file.fileExists()); //This is the line where the exception is thrown

    I would be obliged for any information to this problem.

  • Can't mount my external Hard Disk

    I bought a new mac book. I have been using an external Hard Disk with the laptop i am currently using. I tried to connect the 160GB external hard disk to my mac and it doesnt mount. It worked well for the very first time I connected, but then it showed up some error msg that the disk has been ejected improperly and the data might be lost. It doesn't even show up in the disk utility after I connect it. It works fine with my thinkpad though. Could someone help me with this....
    Help is greatly appreciated....

    hi there--
    try an smc reset of the macbook http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319 and then see if the drive is recognized then. if not, then try a different port if there is one available, or try a different external device with the same connection type to see if all devices with that connection type aren't recognized. good luck.

  • Program For Logging Hard Disk Activity

    Hey Everyone,
    I am having an issue with a server in which the Hard disks keep failing, within the last year 3 of them have died.
    I am in need of a program that can record logs of the hard drive activity overnight, a period of about 12 hours. This will help us track down at what time the issue is occuring, and then what is causing it. Something similar to the built-in windows hard
    disk monitor is task manager, but with the ability to record would be perfect. I have tried other programs but they log in text, and it would take hours of looking through the logs to find any abnormalities
    Does anyone know of such a software?

    Might give this a go.
