Apple TV 1st Gen vs 2nd Gen

I have two Apple TV (32GB and one of the new ones). When I stream movies in m4v format to my new Apple TV, it works fine. However, when I stream to my old AppleTV, it either restarts the device or just hangs. Any ideas what could cause this? The old AppleTV is showing full bars for network.

DP,
Well, the old ATV uses a slower processor, which is the reason or excuse why that machine cannot stream netflix. I have not researched this, but I would imagine that is the same reason it might not stream any movies. This is not a WiFi issue.
Can you stream the movie from the old Apple TV to your home theater if you set the old one up to stream, not link? If the answer is no, I think you just found a reason why you want the new product.
Of course, the new product is still a closed system. There will be hacks out to open it more, but I don't know that they are past beta now. For that, Google is probably your friend.
Now, for my own curiosity - do you have both Apple TVs on the same WiFi network? Do they both flow into the same home theater? How do you have your switching arranged between them? Do tell if you would!

  • 1st Gen and 2nd Gen - help me?

    Ok so i'm confused here...
The 1st gen and 2nd gen iPod touches both have the same 128mb of RAM yes...
So why is it that the 1st gen is apparently incapable of running iOS 4?
Yes, i understand that multi-tasking, and wallpapers(?) are too memory-intensive for the devices with such a small amount of RAM.
But come on, surely something like folders isn't totally 100% impossible for the 1st gen??
I know that the second gen is running @ 121Hz faster than the first but i would've thought that folders require the use of the memory over the processor?

I make no judgements about whether these devices are iOS 4 capable or not. Nor do I offer an opinion about the policy of which devices do, and which do not, upgrade. Nevertheless, it is Apple's policy, and I unfortunately I don't think you're gonna get the answer you seek here... Sorry.
You could try a Genius Bar or AppleCare, but only if you seek a Monty Python-style ‘Argument Clinic’...

  • Can't decide between the 1st gen and 2nd gen 32GB iPod Touch, please help.

I would like to buy a 32GB iPod Touch, the problem is that i can't decide whether i should buy a 1st gen or 2nd gen.
Obviously 2nd gen is "better" but is it worth the extra $$$?
Best Buy has the 1st gen for $310 and the 2nd gen is $400, that's $90 difference.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    that's $90 difference.
Actually, it's only $80 because the 1G touch will come with the old 1.x software and it cost $10 to upgrade to 2.x software.

  • Ipod mini lcd difference between 1st gen and 2nd gen

could someone verify for me the difference between lcd's. is the difference between the two the wideness of the lcd cable. ie: the first gen is smaller and the second gen is wider! am i correct? Thanks.

Here are the differences between the 1st and 2nd gen mini.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300850
There's no difference in screen size.

  • Which iPod Touch do you prefer 1st Gen. or 2nd Gen.? (Those that have both)

Well? As for me I don't really like the volume controls.
I mean that's the whole point of the touch is to TOUCH the screen.
But on the other hand the new touch is slimmer so I heard.

I have to agree... not being able to use your old accessories is a cruel joke that I had no clue Apple was playing. It's like Pi$%ing away $300 for me. (2 home docs and 1 fm transmitter. My 1st gen worked great... the 2nd gen has had sync issues as well. Albeit the 2nd gen's battery is far superior... then again it has to be seeing that it WON'T WORK IN ANY OF THE CHARGERS! I have considered taking it back and getting another older one.

  • Can I use the same sync cord for my 1st Gen and 2nd Gen iPod?

I have to replace my sync cord (house fire) and I wondered if I could buy just one cord to sync both my iPods? I have a 1st Gen and a 2nd Gen.

If they both use the same type of cord, 30-pin or lightning, then yes, you can. There is no difference to the internals of the cords, just the connectors. Just match what you need.

  • What is the difference between the 1st GEN and 2nd GEN IPOD TOUCH

Does the 1st Gen have a a speaker?

    In addition...
The 2nd gen will accept headphones with microphone.
The 2nd gen has a volume control up/down button on the case.
The 2nd gen has bluetooth capabilities which in theory will be enabled with the iPhone 3.0 software update.
The 2nd gen can be obtained in a 32GB model as well as the 8GB and 16GB models.

  • Touch 1st gen and 2nd gen headphone jack question

Alright so my headphone jack crapped the bed and i was looking into just buying the jack and repairing it myself. Now when i look on the internet for a headphone jack, the only things i see sold are 2nd gen hp-jacks. now would this work in my first generation ipod touch? they look identical. I just want to confirm before i buy it.

the only difference between the the two jacks is the 2G has three contacts compared to just two on the 1g. I would rather replace the 1G's headphone jack with the 2G. Two contacts are for stereo left and right. The three contacts for the 2G is for stereo left and right plus mic. Then you can use your 1g to make wifi calls with Skype. I plan on doing this to my 1g as my 2G already has it from the factory which is one of the changes of the 2G from the 1G. Let me know how it goes.

  • 1 Gen and 2nd Gen ATV

I have both of these hooked to one TV and at first two ATV's showed up in iTunes, but now only one shows up and feel it is 1st Gen as it gives me a hard drive space. I have unplugged 2nd Gen twice but nothing shows up? Any suggestions on how to reset or whatever I need to do. Wireless setup with Airport Extreme

ATV2 doest show up in iTunes unless you physically connect it to your computer with a micro USB.

  • Moving apps from 4th gen to 2nd gen?

First time poster and iPod ignoramus here.  Thanks in advance for your patience.
My 8 year old and my 4 year old were sharing a 4th generation iPod touch.
My 16 year old gave his old 2nd gen iPod touch to the 4 year old as a Christmas gift.
Now we want to move the 4 year old's apps from the 4th gen to the 2nd gen.
Is this possible?  If so, how?
    thanks again

Just note what Anonymous1221 said. Most of the popular apps have been updated and the updated apps an no longer compatibe with the the 2G iPod.
Your only way is if you have the version that was compatible on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.

  • 3rd gen screen 2nd gen Touch?

A coworker asked me to repair his cracked iPod Touch screen. He told me it was a 3rd gen. I ordered a 3rd gen screen. When I sat down to replace the screen, I discovered it was in fact a 2nd gen iPod Touch. Any chance the 3rd gen screen is compatible with the 2nd gen iPod Touch?

This place lists different part number for the screen for the 2G and 3G iPods That, together with your observation, leads me to believe that they are not interchangeable.

  • Hi, Does itunes 10.6 still sync older firewire ipods?  I have a 1st gen 5gb, 2nd gen 10gb and 20gb and some minis.  Thanks for your help.

    Hello,
I've been hesitant to update my itunes for fear of losing syncing ability with my older ipods.  Any help would be appreciated.

The reason I had not done it was because I thought I had read somewhere that firewire support had been stopped being supported in itunes so I was still on itunes7.   Certainly a lot of changes, first thing I noticed is it seems to load up the ole 20gb brick superfast and somehow seems to sync the song faster.
I've never used this support forum before, very handy tool!
    Thanks a bunch!

  • So why did apple decide to only let 2nd gen itouch go up to 4.2.1?

I was having glitches with apps like facebook and a few games. So I finally decided to restore and update after a few years without doing so. Now complete I can't download most apps because they require iOS 4.3 or greater. Is there any way around this? And if not, it seems pretty stupid that an update would inhibit my itouch.

Like any and all software driven devices, computers, tvs, dvd players, cars, etc, the older hardware cannot run the newest software forever.
Software constantly requires more from the hardware.

  • Ipod nano 2nd gen and dock/alarm clock

i have read through alot of the posts and have not seen anything similar to my question.
i got my daughter an ipod nano for xmas.
we really dont leave the computer on alot and she was wanting a docking station/speaker setup. i found one that charges it/ has speakers and is also an alarm clock.
she likes the idea of having the alarm clock with it.
this is the model she got: curtis iMode ip210 link to where it was bought http://hhgregg.com/ProductDetail.asp?SID=0B568914D18A4CBEB2E80A95E8C46043&Produc tID=17180
we have not hooked it up yet because of a small problem maybe. (hooked up to power that is)
it came with a bunch of different adapters for the different ipod versions. well the nano one is incorrect. i guess due to ours being a 2nd gen version.
the ipod goes right on the dock fine with out it.
the little plastic adapter i got with the ipod kinda works in the slot of the radio but would need a little modification to snap in. the difference is the outside shape and would just needed some sanding. i have called the support number for the radio and all i could get from the was its not compatable. and i am not too sure why.
from what i have found out is all the ipod dock connectors are the same and there is no difference. not sure about this just what i have noticed.
i tried to call my local apple store and ask them but that guy started talking about firewire and problems. i told him how it docked and what it was and he still insisted on talking about firewire and those problems. i hung up as it didnt sound like he knew anything.
so now would i be ok in useing the adapter i got with the ipod and makeing some slight mods(sanding outside edge) to it. or is the something totally different between the 1st gen and 2nd gen that would mess up the ipod if put in this unit.
the reason i want this unit as it will replace her current alarm clock and she has a loft bed and its the only unit that we have seen that will fit and is in our price range.
    thank you for your help

The dock adaptor that came with the iPod is meant to fit Apple's universal dock and not a 3rd party accessory.
The reason you are having issues is because although the dock connectors on iPods are all the same (the pins are in the same place), the connector on the second gen nano is in a slightly different place than on the first. If you look at it from the bottom with the iPod face up, it's slightly more to the left. This, and the fact that it has a metal case with rounded edges, has made the new nano incompatible with almost all these type of accessories.
It's been mentioned here several times, and a few people have been able to get the manufacturer of the dock to supply them with an adaptor.

  • Hard/soft case for the 2nd gen nano?

I'd really like to buy an 8GB 2nd generation Nano, but am having to delay as i can't find a single case for it (ideally one with a belt clip). I don't want to order a case designed for a 1st gen Nano as i'm not sure it would fit due to the slight size difference between 1st gen and 2nd gen Nanos.
Are there any cases currently available that are designed to fit 2nd gen Nanos? If not, does anyone know when some might become available?
    Thanks for the help!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
In the coming weeks, more and more cases will be released for the 2G iPod nano. You can always go to the online Apple Store too and see what they have available at the moment (tell the store to show you cases compatible with 2G nanos).
