Apple TV 2.0 WILL have Closed Captioning Support

this is good news for a lot of people. Now if apple will add more CC movies to their list.

of course they wont. However 90% of DVD movies are encoded with captioning...the other 10% have subtitles. My point is that the movie houses should be able to handle the request (should apple choose to do so) to re-issue these movies to apple with CC inserted.

  • Apple TV 2 - Can it display closed captions for the hearing impaired?

I have not seen a direct answer to this question anywhere, even on the web. If I buy a movie/TV show DVD, I get closed captions. If I rent or buy from iTunes or some other source, does this mean there are no closed captions to display, or does it mean that Apple TV 2 cannot display the closed captions? It is especially helpful with British shows. We use closed captions all the time for everything else. If it cannot be displayed, Apple TV 2 is largely useless for us. Note: many Boomers (we with the money to spend, not the 15 year olds!) have damaged hearing- they should be included in marketing.

The easiest way to find videos with closed captioning is to select Column Browser->Show Column Browser from the View menu in iTunes. Select a category and then look for titles displaying the CC icon. You can then rent them in iTunes or find them in the Menu in the ATV and rent them there.

  • Do iTunes movie rentals have closed captions?

I gave my Apple TV 2nd gen to a friend, who asked if movies rented from iTunes have closed captioning.  Does anyone know if this is the case, and if so, how to access it?

If you have a Fifth Generation iPod, no; Apple fixed it in later iPods, but the change can't be applied to that iPod model.

  • You all know that now some TV Shows have Closed Captions...

Well, I've tried everything, enabled closed captions on Audio & Video menu on ATV2, tried to Airplay the purchased videos with CC from my computer to the ATV, use all my CC TV shows on iCloud (bought from the itunes store), but the fact is that closed captions on TV Shows only appear on the iPod/iPad or on the computer, not on my Apple TV, and it's not only me, some of my friends have this issue too. Any of you also have it or know how to fix it?

    Frank:
I've seen what you mentioned here about incorrect artwork and order displacement in Movies section of Home Sharing in iPad mentioned in other forums as an issue.  Though I'm sorry I don't recall a fix mentioned, just that it seems to be a problem others are experiencing to I thought I'd mention.
Another thing I found useful while exploring other forums is to stop the Movies app in iPad.  To do this, or for any application, hold down the Home button on the iPad until you're at your home screen.  Then double click.  This brings up a list of open running applications and processes on the iPad on the bottom.  Simply hold down on any of these application icons until they start jiggling about.  You will also see a red "-" minus symbol for each one.  Choose Movies to stop it. It then disappears.  Hit the Home button once more to go back to your home screen and re-launch Movies and then Home Sharing.
I haven't edited any of the Movie metadata yet since I had to rebuild my entire library lately after rebuilding a drive the videos were stored on after a failure, so I haven't yet experienced what you have, but would be suprised if I didn't.  TV shows seem fine now, I'm delighted they all finally show up.  TV Shows seem to sort differently and is more sensitive to the metadata than movies from my experience and observation.  The whole thing seems finicky.  But as I continue to use and work with it, my iPad seems somehow to be "learning" my usage behaviour and is gradually sorting itself out.
    Just stay with it.
You've also sold me on the notion of getting an Apple TV2.  I've been interested in buying one since Apple redesigned it.  I've heard good things about it's usage with Home Sharing. I think I'll get one when I get back from Asia next summer.

  • HT204370 Do movies have closed captions to view on TV or IPad?

I need closed captions because of hearing problem

    Hi pereanver
iPad can show movies or television shows with Closed Captions (CC) for us being hearing impaired, but you have to understand that not all movies or TV shows on iTunes have CC. Most of them do, but not all of it.
There are far more DVDs with subtitles for the hearing impaired than there are on iTunes, of course maybe Apple could replace movies that do not have CC with ones that now do have CC, but Apple and iTunes are rather kind of a step backwards against that of DVDs and Blu-Rays.
In iTunes, just click or tap on a movie you are interested in, to go to the page about this movie, then look for CC next or  below the title, often usually next to the age cert/rating.
    For example:
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
    12  CC
    Back to the Future
    PG  CC
Just look for the CC logo.

  • No Closed Captioning support in QT 10.3?

    Hi,
I'm on Mavericks with a 3 year old iMac.
A friend sent me a closed-captioned Quicktime MOV file, which displays the CC text
on his Snow Leopard with QT 10.
Absolutely no options for that on my Mavericks' QT 10.3.
And then the Apple "help" site gives instructions as though it IS available.
Fortunately, I dug up an old QT 7 player and it works.
Was it an oversight of Apple to leave out this helpful option in their
    recent editions of Quicktime?
Was it also an oversight of Apple to omit adding to their "help" page,
this very "helpful" clarification:  "Sorry, Closed Captioning is Closed on All versions
    of Quicktime past 10.xx"
I know it's asking a lot but ... REALLY APPLE!

This question came up today for one of our faculty who was using QuickTime 10.3 under MacOS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  The solution we found was to open System Preferences, go to Accessibility, click on Captions on the left side of the window, and then check the "Prefer Closed Captions and SDH" checkbox.  After you do this, restart QuickTime -- you will then be able to select Closed Captions from under the Subtitle menu in the video's control bar, or under the View -> Subtitles menu.
I wish Apple didn't require you to prefer Closed Captions in order for the option to show up at all in QuickTime -- this recent change they made does not seem like an improvement, and I hope they reconsider and restore the old functionality.  Closed Captioning is used by many people who do not have special accessibility needs, for example, people who want to watch with sound turned off, or people learning a foreign language, and it shouldn't be this hard to turn Closed Captioning on.

  • Any news on Closed Captioning support?

A new software version makes me hopeful knowing that almost all other Apple products now support CC. But I didn't see anything specific on their websie about it. Anyone have any update on this?

No updates or news or anything that I've seen. With the new rentals I might think about getting an Apple TV *IF* there were closed captions.

  • Closed captioning in Apple TV version 4.4

I updated the Apple TV software to v4.4 but I still can't get closed captioning to work. The cc menu does not show up after pressing the up arrow button and holding down the select button (only the chapter list). Closed captioning is enabled in the settings menu and the movies I rented all feature a cc option. Very disappointing. I will think twice before renting any other movie.

You can turn on closed captioning in the AppleTV settings. Go to Settings > Video.
It is possible that not all rented movies will have closed captions. It is up to the movie studio to provide CC with the movies files they give to Apple for hosting.

  • Closed Captioning in Apple TV Rented Movies?

Is it possible to select closed captioning in Apple TV Rented Movies? I rented a movie and did not see the closed caption option. Is it possible that only certain movies have the closed captioning option, or none.
I would appreciate any information regarding this subject.

You can turn on closed captioning in the AppleTV settings. Go to Settings > Video.

  • Movies playing in iTunes will not show closed captions

I have purchased several movies from the iTunes store. They all have Closed Captioning listed in the store description. I need Closed Captioning because I have hearing loss and even with my hearing aids, I cannot hear all the dialogue in movies.
In my iTunes app, I opened Preferences-->Playback and checked the box for "Show closed captioning when available." Then I play the movie in iTunes. No captions. I click on the Controls menu for Audio & Subtitles. It's grayed out.
I go to the .m4v file in Finder and open the movie with Quicktime to see whether I can get captions that way. No captions. I check the View menu for Show Closed Captioning. It's grayed out.
At this point I'm thinking these movies do not really HAVE captions, despite what the store description said. However, this proves to be wrong because I turn on my TV and start up my Apple TV 3. I select "Movies" and then "Purchased" and find these movies. When I play these movies via the Apple TV, they all show up on the TV screen with the captions working perfectly.
So, what gives? I've spent hours searching the internet for a solution, but all I can find is that the selection I've made in iTunes preferences *should* make the captions show up in iTunes. I'm stumped. I want to play the movies on my computer in iTunes (or in Quicktime) so that I don't have to be at my house in front of my TV in order the enjoy them. Is there any way I can make these movies play in iTunes with the captions showing? Can anyone make any suggestions? I'd be very grateful if someone could help me achieve this goal.

I have same problem with my son's iPod Touch running iOS 5.1.1.  I set "explicit" to off, but then many songs we purchased on iTunes that are labeled as "clean" do not show up on his iPod Touch. If I set "explicit" to on, they do show up.

  • Closed caption for apple tv

It would be nice if I could get the closed captioning to work while watching a movie through the apple tv. Since there are a great number of us that are deaf or hard of hearing. Any suggestions on how to get that feature to work or hope Apple can come up with something to make it work , that would be nice.

content that have closed captions included already work on the appletv, and the appletv shows the subtitles.

  • Apple TV and Closed Captiones

I've noticed that a lot of Movies as well as TV Series are coming now with CC. When I whatch them on my Mac, no problem, the CC works as advertised.
I have not gotten it to work on my iphone, but have gotten it to work in my ipad. Yes I've veryfied that CC is turned on in settings.
What I truly want, is to be be able to watch all the TV series and movies that I buy on my apple TV. I've tried streaming (airplay) my video (confirmed that it has CC) from both my iphone and ipad to my apple TV and nothing. I've also connected both apparatus directly the the HDMI connector  and nothing.
So my question is. How can I watch my CC videos purchased on iTunes on my TV?
    Thanks for your wisdom.

I meant from iTunes on your computer using the computers menu on the Apple TV.
You can turn closed captioning on/off in Settings > Audio & Video

This is a problem with home sharing, you are not going to have to re-encode all your CD's.

  • No closed captioning on apple tv

I bought a tv series (The River) in itunes store with closed caption and the cc works fine on my imac but not on my Apple tv. Closed captioning is turned active on both computer and apple tv. What is wrong? I really need it

    Hey jespersthlm
I would restore the Apple TV and then turn the settings on again to ensure that everything is checked for closed captioning.
