Apple tv 2&3 slow download

For the last few months I realised my APPLE TVS are running very slowly..I love watching trailers...they literally are crawling in terms of speed! When I tried to watch them on my MBPRO they ran on the dot! I am talking about 720P.
I really do not understand what is going on???! Shouldn't they both running at same speed??
Steps I had taken so far....
reset router
turn off QOS in router
did the network test in appletv
using ISP DNS
If anyone of you know any better suggestion please advise...thanks heaps in advance!!
Cheers

Have you verified speed via speedtest.net ?
Have you checked at different times?
Check istumbler or netstumbler to verify interference
Make sure you are on your ISPs DNS (settings - network - configure DNS - automatic)

  • Apple TV iTunes super slow downloads

I've had my Apple TV for a couple years.  Never had a single problem.  I use it to stream movies & video from the iTunes store, Netflix, Hulu, Vimeo, etc.  I have a fast broadband connection and view everything in 720p HD.  It's always worked fine.  Instant rentals have been just that... instant.
Just this week, downloads from the iTunes store slowed to a crawl, as if I had gone back to a dial up connection.  3 1/2 hrs. to download a 40 min. show.
I restarted ATV several times.  Nothing.  I restarted my DSL modem and Airport Extreme.  I checked for firmware updates for the AE.  All up to date.  All in good working order.  No network speed problems on any of our Macs or devices in the house.  I downloaded content from Netflix, Hulu, etc. via ATV to check if it was a network problem.  Netflix and Hulu stream fine on the ATV, just as they have in the past.  Only iTunes content is giving me this problem.
Anyone else have this problem?  Anyone have a solution?

Netflix adapts to the connection so that wouldn't be a good way to judge.
If you haven't, check your actual speed (www.speedtest.net)
Try to rule out interference, if on wifi, by using istumbler.net
Ensure you are using your ISPs DNS

  • HT1577 how do a get a refund on a ridiculously slow downloading rented movie for my apple tv dispite a 5mb/sec down load speed? my first experience with appletv movie rental. no good. rented at 4:30pm. still waiting for standard def movie to finish at 8:1

how do a get a refund on a ridiculously slow downloading rented movie for my apple tv dispite a >5mb/sec down load speed? my first experience with appletv movie rental. no good. rented at 4:30pm. still waiting for standard def movie to finish at 8:10pm. Not good enough.

Thanks for the pointers folks. Yeah, 1.5GB is pretty poor isn't it? There are other suppliers, but you have to get a their phone line installed to access the internet so it's an £85 setup fee plus a day off work for a guy to come round and drill a hole in your wall before you even get to the monthly costs.
Don't get me wrong though - I'm certainly not an Apple basher, but am equally frustrated with both them and the ISP.
Virgin Media spend all kinds of money advertising their broadband as the fastest in the UK, but don't tell you (up front anyway) that you'll be cut off if you actually try and use it.
Apple on the other hand carry on with their 'it just works' mantra, but with Apple TV this only applies if you meet certain criteria (again, not mentioned up front).
I guess it aint a biggie, as i was gifted my Apple TV, and love all the other stuff it does, but from the number of posts on this forum can see that there's a lot of angry customers out there who want explanations as to why they're having similar problems to me.
Will be very interesting to see if Apple release any kind of software update that turns the flash drive from a buffer to permanent storage, to at least ease some of the pain...

  • How many thousands of Apple TV users have to scream their complaints before Apple will respond to the fury over the impossibly slow download speeds of movies bought through iTunes??????

How many thousands of Apple TV users have to scream their complaints before Apple will respond to the fury over the impossibly slow download speeds of movies bought through iTunes?

As jules says, your rate (currently at least) may be slow.
If it used to be good I wonder is your ISP is slowing ('throttling') your speed after you've used so many GB of a quota each day or month - check what they think you should be getting as a download speed.
While Apple's servers do occasionally play up, it's generally the ISP being slow not Apple.
If you're using Google's DNS servers that has caused issues for some.
Recommended speeds for near instant playback:
    SD         2.5Mbps
    720p      6 Mbps
    1080p    8 Mbps
Is your speed test from somewhere like speedtest.net?
It might be helpful to post Mbps to ensure we/you are not confusing speeds by using different units to those measured.

  • Very slow downloads Network test says "can't connect to Apple"

Have a 1st generation ATV and it has been working great for years until now. When I have slow downloads so I go to "Test Network" and it fixes the problem, but not any more. Now it says "can't connect to Apple"
Funny thing is it can connect but it is very very slow!
I have tried most everything I can think of this has got me stumped!
-- Speed test on my network shows I am getting 12 Mb/s download speeds with Comcast cable
-- using an Apple Airport extreme
-- I have NOT done any changes to my network
-- Have done a factory reset on ATV
    -- rebooted my Airport
-- Made sure all my updates have been done
-- Hooked ATV up with ethernet cable to network that just seemed to make to worse! strange?
-- look all very the boards
Does any one have any ideas?
    Thanks!

I have the same experience, i.e., "Test Network" used to improve slow downloads, but now when I attempt it, the test download progress bar moves, but then I get the "can't connect to Apple" error message. I have not yet found a solution to this, however it may be related to the following problem:
ATV does not remember wireless network password.
    ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
I am having to re-enter the wireless network password every time the ATV starts up, and sometimes during startup it appears to be in a Catch-22 situation where it is trying to access the network but cannot because it has not yet let me manually enter the password, so it spends a long time with amber or amber plus white light blinking, and then more time with solid white light before finally showing the startup sequence, about half an hour after being switched on.
See post about password problem at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=13182180#13182180, which also lists my equipment.

  • Apple server : slow download

Hi, I'd like to know why are apple servers always so slow, two days ago I downloaded iOS 8.1 for my iphone and I add to wait some hours, with a download speed of 100kbs. And now i'm downloading Yosemite and it's the same. And all my friends have this problem with apple servers, even the night it's still slow, anytime of the day. I live in France for more precision. Maybe the problem is only located in my country. And the problem is not from my connection, I can download everything at 2mbps. Except when it's from apple's servers.
    Thanks

I still do many things with iTunes. I still backup my iPad with iTunes. But like I said, doing the OTA updates is great.... far less time consuming because of the size of the downloaded file.
And ... Mrsarcastic ....I do not think that Apple is capping the download speed. Even when I updated from 4.3.5 and had to do it with iTunes - before OTA updates were available - it only took me about 90 minutes - start to finish - to download, install, restore from backup and sync my iPad one - with iOS 5.

  • Slow download on apple tv

slow downloads on apple tv.  Taking up to 7 hours. How do I fix or is it an Apple tv problem??

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this atwww.speedtest.net.
1080p HD movies require a recommended speed of 8 Mbps, 720p HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.

  • IPad 2 / Apple TV slower download speed than laptop?

My Apple TV (gen 2) and iPad 2 both have issues with download speeds.  Netflix has pretty much become useless on my Apple TV due to the slow download speeds.  I'm currently using CableOne for my internet provider and I consistently get ~ 20-25Mbps download speeds on my laptop, but only around 0.75Mbps on the iPad 2.
I use a Linksys WRT64G router and currently have it set to use wireless "G" only, QoS and WMM disabled, WPA Personal Security with AES encryption and the wireless set to channel 1.  All these settings were based off other user's findings that have had the same issues and yet I'm still having problems.
Both the iPad and the router have been rebooted without improvements.
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks in advance...

wireless is unreliable for the speedtest as it varies depending on home conditions so only way accpeted is by cable.  if that also shows a problem then you can take it from there

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

Hello, I have a Macbook Pro 13 running mountain lion 10.8.4 has a very slow download on safari and i don't know why it is like this. Any help with this please.

1.Download speed depends on the Internet Service Provider.
2.Power off the router. Wait awhile. Power it back on. Wait until all the lights are lit up properly.
       It will take a while.
       Restart the computer.
    3.Start up in Safe Mode

    4.Reset Safari.
Click Safari in the menu bar.
From the drop down select "Reset Safari".
Uncheck the box next to  " Remove saved names and passwords".
      Click "Reset".

Do you ever visit a friend or realtive with a Mac who has faster internet? Maybe the local library has Macs on a fast line. If so, get a USB thumb drive and put this link on it from your computer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Then put this link on the drive:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1429
When you are at some place that has a Mac with a decent download speed. insert the thumb drive in that Mac and click on the first link ("DL1399") and direct the download to your thumb drive. Now do the same this with the second link.
The installer files will now be on the thumb drive and, when you get home, drag them from the thumb drive to your desktop. Install the Combo update first.

  • Extremely slow download from Itunes store when on NAS

    Hi All,
Since the latest Itunes update 10.6 I've been experiencing extremely slow download from the store. Set up is as follows (with all the latest firmware and software upgrades done on everything)
ITunes DB and XML locally stored on HDD
Itunes Media Folder stored on NAS DNS-323
DNS 323 NAS hardwired to network by 1000 Gb LAN Connection
         Cabled Internet connection at 60Mbps
There is no issue running Itunes from the NAS to MAC / APPLETV and other devices across the network wirelessly or hardwired, except when downloading purchases from the ITunes Store. One HD tv show takes 4 hours to download and averages 1Mbps speed.
After running some test with various configuration it seems that the fact that the Downloads folder located within the ITunes Media folder (now stored on the NAS) is causing the poor download speed. When the Download folder is local on a HDD  it's got no problem reaching 60Mbps.
Unfortunately there is no way to tell ITunes to keep the Downloads folder local and the ITunes Media folder on NAS, it always stays within the Itunes Media folder no matter where this folder is located.
Permitting Itunes to keep the Downloads folder locally while downloading files and transferring the files to the ITunes Media folder (wherever it's located) once it's fully downloaded might be the simple solution to this common problem.
How about testing this out Apple!

I have some information to add to this.  I've been seeing these problems for quite some time since I started downloading in HD.  My library is rather large so I too decided to use another drive.  My case is different though I have and extra 2 TB internal drive and my media folder is on it.  This rules out all Wifi, network, or USB bottlenecks as a cause of the problem.  I have noted a few oddities about this behavior and I will mention them here although I am not sure what they mean.
    1.  If I set up a long list of downloads it seems to crawl on all downloads.  If I kill the "apple push" process the top two seem to speed up.  I have to maintain the list and only enable two downloads at a time to get anywhere near reasonble speeds but this method is great for one or two downloads at a time.
    2.  I was curious about this problem after watching it download for hours on a 24MBPS connection for just a few shows.  When I did yet another search I finally found this thread so I thought checking something out might be interesting.  I set up some HD movies to download on my secondary system that only has one hard drive.  Although not at full speed they began downloading much faster.  Three movies are all downloading on the single drive system faster than the one alone on the system with the Itunes media folder on a different drive.
Both systems are hard wired to the internet.
Finding this thread made me very curious I was wondering if there would be a performance boost if I uninstalled Itunes, and re-installed it on the media drive.  I really wanted that drive to be storage only but it makes me wonder if it would give different results or the same problem from not being on the OS drive.
Both systems are running Windows 7, and both are able to download streaming content, large files, or movies from other sites relatively instantly.

  • Solution for iPad slow download from app store

First, I have to clarify this is just my solution for the problem I encoutered. It may not work for you, but I think it's nice to post here for whoever needs it some day.
I live in Sydney, using TPG as my home network provider. In order to use iMessage on my iPad, I followed the solution on this community to change to DNS to 8.8.8.8. And it works, which I thinks it's really odd and Apple never gives any explaination.
But after I changed the DNS, downloading from the app store became really slow. My iPhone 4S can download the same app with the same network about 4 times faster than my iPad does. Initially, I thought this problem is caused by jail breaking. So I jailbroken my iPhone 4S as well (haha, this is what I learned from Apple-Think different), but the problem still. Turns out this problem is caused by the 8.8.8.8 DNS. so I changed the DNS back to my router domain, in my case 10.1.1.1 (for some people it may be 168.1.1.1), it become fast again. So you may try this way when you have the same slow download problem after change your dns to 8.8.8.8.
I don't know why this works. I don't know why iPad needs to change the dns to use iMessage in Australia. And I don't know why download from app store become slow after the change. If you know the reason, please be kindly to tell me, I'd love to hear about it. Now I have to change my DNS back and forth to download apps quickly and use iMessage, if you have better solution for this issue, please be kindly to let me know as well. Good day mate.

  • Brand new MacBook Pro has really slow download and streaming speeds

I'm new to Macs, and don't know much about computers in general. But I got a 13" MacBook Pro almost two weeks ago and have been experiencing really slow download and video streaming speeds. Pages load one image at a time, Netflix is almost impossible to use because the videos will stop buffering every five minutes even if I let them buffer for more than ten minutes. I haven't been experiencing any issues with wifi on my phone, and I've troubleshot our router. I'm not sure what it could be--but then again, I don't know a whole lot. Before I go running off to the Apple Store or call support, is there anything I can try in the meantime? Thanks!
    Here are the system specs:
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Graphics  Intel Iris
    Software  OS X 10.9.3 (13D65)
74.23 GB free out of 120.47 GB

Check with your isp regarding your download & upload speeds as well as streaming.  You need to determine if the issue is on their end.  You can also check on the speedtest.com website.  Compare what your isp tells you to the net speed website.

  • Exceedingly slow download speeds on brand new mbp os lion

    Hi,
There seems to be a lot of posted issues with slow download speeds on the MBP.  I purchased mine 2 weeks ago (Oct 2011), a 13" core i7.  My download speeds are a tiny fraction of what I get with a 10 year old Dell.  Reading the posts on this issue, they all seem to be going in circles.  I am technically very savvy although new to apple.  I did at one point get an acceptable increase in download speeds after manually entering the gateway, subnet and DNS.  However two days later download speeds have reduced from 17.8 MB/s to 37kb/s.  The right now the Dell is screaming a 702MB download.  The MBP slug is telling me it will take 5 hours.
Has anyone ever resolved his issue?

So as mentioned above I tried connecting to the router using a wire instead of wireless..
many sites work fine....but some do not
    Example
    works fine
    Apple.com
    gmail.com
does not work fine...the page does not load up and gets stuck in the very beginning....
    www.CNN.com
    http://www.sportsauthority.com/home/index.jsp
sportauthority has flash embedded on that page....CNN, I do not know...
could it have anything to do with Flash ?
