Apple TV 2 choppy video playback when mirroring from Macbook Pro (Yosemite) and Macbook Air (Yosemite) but not iOS devices

Video playback is choppy (cuts out every 30-45 seconds) when air playing from both my MacBook Air 1.3 GHz Intel Core i5 running Yosemite and my husbands new MacBook Pro, but runs perfectly when mirroring from any of our iOS devices (iPhone 6+, iPad mini 3, etc.) We have Apple TV 2. This problem just started a few weeks ago, was working fine around Christmas. The problem seems to have coincidentally started right after our son tried plugging in and setting up his Chromecast on our tv. I disconnected the Chromecast, but we still have the problem. All of our software if up to date and I've tried disconnecting blue tooth, we do not have a microwave and our wifi network has a very strong signal. We have an Airport Extreme base station. Is there a solution to our problem?

Hi leahmturner,
I see that you are experiencing an issue with choppiness while AirPlay Mirroring from your computers to your Apple TV. I have an article that contains some helpful troubleshooting steps for you regarding this issue:
About AirPlay Mirroring in OS X - Apple Support
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201343
Optimizing image quality
Resolution matching modes
You can choose between two desktop resolution matching modes that let you select which display will have the best image. When AirPlay Mirroring is turned on, select an option under "Match Desktop Size To:" in the AirPlay Mirroring menu extra.
Match Desktop Size To: Apple TV
AirPlay Mirroring changes the desktop resolution to best match your Apple TV, resulting in a 16:9 image that fills the HDTV screen. This setting often produces the sharpest image on the HDTV. The aspect ratio and/or resolution of the built-in Mac display may change to accommodate the Apple TV.
Match Desktop Size To: This Mac
AirPlay Mirroring scales the contents of the desktop to fit on the Apple TV, leaving the resolution of your Mac's display unchanged. Use this setting for the sharpest image on your Mac's display. Depending on your Mac model, the resulting image may not fill the HDTV screen.
Troubleshooting AirPlay Mirroring
If you don't see mirroring options
If your Mac and Apple TV are on the same network, but no AirPlay Mirroring menu appears, your Apple TV may be asleep. Simply press a button on your Apple TV remote to wake it up. After a few seconds, the AirPlay Mirroring menu extra appears. If you still don't see the options you expect, make sure your Apple TV has the current software update installed. Also make sure that you have the "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" option selected in the Displays pane of System Preferences.
If the menu bar or Dock is cropped
Some HDTVs have bezels that cover a small percentage of the screen. This can result in a slight cropping of a full-resolution HDTV image. Depending on the HDTV model, AirPlay Mirroring may automatically adjust the picture size to prevent cropping.  If you are using OS X Mountain Lion or later, and you see cropping of the menu bar or Dock when using AirPlay Mirroring, toggle the Overscan correction option in Displays preferences.
Minimize video post-processing
HDTVs often apply picture quality enhancements intended to improve the look of film and video sources. In some cases, these enhancements can lead to over-sharpening artifacts when displaying your Mac desktop. Some HDTV models have built-in settings to change or disable the enhancements for use with a computer (computer, presentation, or game modes). Otherwise, the controls for sharpness, detail enhancement and noise reduction can be used to optimize the appearance of the Mac desktop. Consult your HDTV’s manual for guidance on the appropriate settings for use with a computer.
Firewall security settings
If you use a firewall, make sure the following firewall security options have been set to allow AirPlay Mirroring to work:
Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu ().
Click Security & Privacy, then click Firewall.
Click the lock icon to unlock it if it's locked, then type an administrator name and password.
Click Firewall Options.
Deselect (uncheck) the “Block all incoming connections” checkbox.
Select (check) the “Automatically allow signed software to receive incoming connections” checkbox.
Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!
Regards,
Braden

    Sorry for the delay...
I did what you've told me, new account and manually copied my files from Time Machine. I had lots of permissions problems, but at the end, almost everything is in order... It seems it had to be with some of the Apple Preferences, but I can't be sure, as most of them were dumped to the trash can.
I still don't have my Mail Rules back, unfortunately, although I did goggled some. It is a pity, as I had around 30 or 40 of them, getting my mail in order to each of its mailboxes, but it is a small price as the rest doesn't show the before syntoms.
    Thanks for the help, anyway!!

  • Choppy video playback with airplay from Macbook Pro

I experience very choppy video using airplay towards my Airplay unit (3rd gen).
I am using a Macbook Pro (15" retina, late 2013 version) with these specifications:
    - Intel Core i7 2.7 GHz.
    - 16 GB ram.
    - 768 GB flash/SSD.
...and so on. I have the Mavericks OS installed (10.9.1).
When I duplicate or extend the screen of the computer to my Apple TV it is chopping EXTREMELY much. I am not talking a little bit - but it is not even watchable. I thought that it could be the router itself as the connection is (probably, correct me if I am wrong anyone) is directed from the computer - to the router - and then to the Apple TV, which could make the router like a filter in the process. And if something would prevent the signal from reaching the Apple TV with "full speed" it could prevent the actuall image.
However, when I am using the iPhone 4S and streaming video (both video found in my phone as well as streamed TV from apps such as Magine.com) the image flows completely flawless. There are not even a touch of lagging. It flows perfect, just as watching a movie directly on the TV.
The networking hardware in the phone is slower than in the Macbook Pro retina (late 2013) - both for sending and recieving data. But still... my iPhone works better than the Macbook Pro for the Apple TV. Even though that the processing, memory, graphic and networking power is probably a thousand times faster in the computer... it still performs really bad.
I have followed some discussion threads here (https://discussions.apple.com/message/22051725#22051725 and https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5734226?tstart=0 just as a couple of examples). I have accessed my router (Netgear Gigabit EVG 2000) and increased the Wireless mode to "up to 270 Mbps. I have also followed the previously linked threads and disabled the WMM (in the QoS-section). I felt that this made a little bit of a difference...
...when I am mirroring the screen and scale down the resolution to match the AirPlay screen (full-HD, 1920 x 1080) it works okay, but still chops quite a bit almost all the time. But if I extend the screen and want to watch TV at the same time as I am doing something else on the computer - then it chops so that it is not even possible to watch.
This have to be something either with the Mavericks OS or with my network settings - can anyone help me...? It would mean A LOT!

Curious why you think it would be my network when the same network is being used by the iPad 3rd Gen and iPhone 5 and they both stream without issue. As far as the other items you mentioned, all devices are up-to-date with the latest firmware/software and the latest MacBooks do not have ethernet ports. Speedtests that I have conducted also indicate that bandwidth is not the issue as the results show that the speeds received from the router are quite impressive.

  • Why is my video pixelated when exporting from Premiere Pro?

    Hi,
I'm a musician wanting to make some basic videos for YouTube. The videos will consist of an intro (logo, title etc) and audio playing over a still image which will last the duration of the song. I've edited the still image for the video within Photoshop (CS5.1). The image is of a woman screaming and is intentionally very dark. When I export this image from Photoshop, the quality is excellent. When I then import this image into Premiere Pro (CS5.5) and export as the finished video, the quality of the image is significantly reduced and is rather pixelated. After spending hours searching online and trying different settings to achieve the result I want, I've had no luck, and I'm now in desperate need of a professional opinion. Is it possible to get the same quality image within the exported video as I get from an exported Photoshop file?
    Things I've tried:http://www.ashmathos.com/Musici
Photoshop - Exporting image using different file types - .tif , .PNG , .PSD  etc
Premiere Pro - Exporting video using different formats - .FLV , Quicktime and MPEG4
                        - Changing the Capture format between DV and HDV
                        - Different presets - AVCHD, HDV, DV - PAL/NTSC etc
Both the image exported from Photoshop and the video are 1080p (square pixels)
An example of what I've explained can be found here:
    http://www.ashmathos.com/Musician/Test
(The video can be found below the image)
    To any responders,
    Thank you!

Can't you see how the video is pixelated? Mainly around the nose and forehead?
Nope.  Looks fine when I watch it.

  • IPhoto library - Events - pics imported from camera, scanner and internet - it doesn't seem to matter - for a while they show OK but then when I go into the event and start scrolling some--but not all--pics disappear w/ ? small and expanded.

iPhoto Library - events - pics imported to library from camera, scanner and internet.  Some disappear--sometimes when scrolling and other times on their own.  Some disappear when in general event and some when I try to expand the picture.  If when expanding the small pic remains.  It's really annoying.

Are you running a "referenced" or "managed" library?
    Give this a try:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Choppy video playback via Airplay Mirroring

I have an early/mid 2011 15" MBP with a quad-core i7 and Mountain Lion installed.  When I use Airplay to stream video from my MBP through my AppleTV 2 to my TV set, the video is very choppy and laggy sometimes.  I use either Quicktime or VLC.  Everything is running via wifi from my ISP modem/router through an Apple Time Capsule.  If anyone could help me out, that would be great, thanks!

  • Choppy Video Playback with new update 7.5.0.20

Well, here we go again. This latest itunes update is not up to snuff. My video playback has hit rock bottom.. And worst of all, my cpu usage is thru the roof. What the heck dude. You know, I talk to my buddies that own MACS, and of course they never have a problem with their freakin itunes. This has happened before, about a year ago. You can check the video reviews on Battlestar Galactica. I uninstalled and reinstalled, and NADA!!! Same ol' crappy playback. This was not an issue with the previous version. I even performed a system maintenace on my laptop just to make sure the CPU vents weren't clogged with dust. I know that Apple would prefer that the whole world owned a freakin MAC; but for Pete's sake, I am paying them to download content!!!!Paying!!!!!!! Give me something I can look forward to. Dread is what I feel everytime they announce one of their cute updates.

Me too. All I get is audio and a green screen when i try to play a video(that i *paid for* in some cases). I asked a question here a year ago and have yet to get an answer to!

  • Toshiba 46TL938: Choppy 3D playback when PC-to-TV through HDMI

    Hello,
I got a very specific problem and cannot spot exactly where the problem may be. In brief:
    - I got a 3D movie which is played back through VLC but also KMplayer.
    - On my 23" monitor 1080p through HDMI the movie plays pretty well and smooth.
    - On my Toshiba 46" HDTV the playback on 3D lags sometimes, exactly the same when a computer cannot handle the load and lags on video playback.
-I tried to put the movie on a USB flash and connect it to the TV. Then the playback of the 3D on the TV was really smooth without any lag.
So facts are the frames work well on a HD 23" monitor (playedback with VLC & KMplayer), but also run smooth on my notebooks monitor.
Fact is also that the same movie plays smooth from a USB flash connected on the TV.
I tried with another movie (non 3D) to stream it from my notebook through HDMI on my TV. It worked pretty well without any lag.
    1) So my main question is if the movie is not ok, why does it play back correct through a USB but not through my notebook.
    2) Furthermore if my laptops vga would be unable to handle 1080, i guess the playback would lag also on my 23" monitor which is also 1080.
I really have no idea if it is the movie , TV, or vga that has the problem.
    Any suggestion would be great.
    Thank you in advance.
    Hardware info:
    TV: Toshiba 46TL938
    Notebook: Fujitsu Amilo xi 2528

    Hi
I dont think its TV issue.
First of all using USB flash memory stick, the movie playback is handled by Toshiba media player and secondly the data does not need to be send through an cable.
Streaming the movie from notebook, you send the signal to the TV via HDMI cable. The 3D movies contains a lot of data and this might affect the playback quality streaming the data from one device to another.
So if you would notice some interrupts while playback, this might be related to the HDMI cable.
If your HDMI connection is capable of 1080p and/or your television is capable of refresh rates greater than 50Hz, you will need a Category 2 cable. Conventional HDMI/DVI cable may not work properly with this model. Try also an short cable (1.5-2m)
You should also check the user manual *page 88.*
The HDMI inputs on this TV only accept VGA, SVGA, XGA, WXGA, and SXGA signal formats which are
compliant with VESA as shown in the table _page 88_.
Since some PCs and HDMI or DVI devices input signals which are different from the resolution and frequency described in the table, the following phenomenon may occur; _incorrect display, false format detection, picture position failure, blur, or judder_.
In this case, set the monitor output format on your PC, HDMI or DVI device to conform to a signal in the table you would find in user manual.

  • How to fix choppy video playback on Windows Surface Tablet

Choppy video playback is driving me crazzzy.  How can I fix it?

If you're using Internet Explorer, there is nothing you can do here in the way of reinstalling, repairing or even updating it.
Microsoft embeds it and it's "their baby".
You can try repairing IE: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378
Also, make sure it's porperly enabled:  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/885448
and that ActiveX controls aren't blocking it:  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/867968
Apart from that, streaming issues are connectivity related if they persist.

I have the latest Macbook Pro retina and I have looked on line for ways to hook it up to Apple TV, but all ways have failed to do so. However, I can easily access Apple TV through my Iphone 4s.
~ When I turn on Apple TV and Airplay and connect only the Macbook Screen goes into the mirror tv format. Nothing shows up at all on the TV.

Awesome, thanks everyone for your brilliant ideas in regards to trouble shooting this issue.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion

I just wanted to follow this up by saying that you were entirely correct in your diagnosis of the situation.  My computer did have the faulty part you linked to.  I brought my laptop in and specifically told them to run that test, had it fail and then argued with the person at the genius bar and the manager.  Eventually they offered to have it sent out and have everything replaced for free of charge.  They did so mainly because I had complained about graphical issues almost every other time I had come in with problems and no one ran the test.  They should have caught this problem during my warranty, but they didn't, even though I mentioned the problem.
Anyhow, after having the part replaced, I haven't had my computer crash a single time since, or had many of the issues mentioned above.  I've never had this experience before.  Even brand new, I got occasional crashes.  Hopefully this new trend continues.
I do find that web browsing is still incredibly slow.  Web browsers just chug along at a slow pace, even though I have great internet speed.  Maybe I'll try just deleting my web browsers and reinstalling them...
Anyhow, thank you for your help and knowledge Clinton.

Sounds like something internal was damaged in the fall, probably the disk drive. Take to Apple and ask them to fix it.
