Boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then disable these, reenable one at time to determine which. If KP, then most likely hardware related. Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice, followed by  Rember.  See

  • Did Apple Script change - upgraded Snow Leopard Mavericks

I used to use below script to toggle sound output (assigned to function key) in Snow Leopard.
Upgraded to Mavericks few weeks ago and wanted to use that script again, but keep on getting error -1728 as displayed hereafter, anyone out there to tell me what I should do to make it work in Mavericks?
    Thx,
    Laerg1
    Here's the full script:
--This script toggles between two audio outputs in the "Sound" pane in "System Preferences.
--USES GUI SCRIPTING - "ENABLE ASSISTIVE DEVICES" OPTION MUST BE CHECKED IN "UNIVERSAL ACCESS" PREFERENCE PANE
--Adapted from script written by Corey Menscher for toggling outputs using Salling Erickson Clicker
    tell application "System Preferences"
        activate
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
        tell application process "System Preferences"
            set frontmost to true
click menu item "Sound" of menu "View" of menu bar 1
if my wait4window("Sound") is false then return false
            tell window "Sound"
                tell tab group 1
                    tell radio button "Output"
                        click
                    end tell
(* You can add your own audio output descriptive text, such as "iMic USB Audio", in the next section. *)
if (selected of row 2 of table 1 of scroll area 1) then
set selected of row 1 of table 1 of scroll area 1 to true
                    else
set selected of row 2 of table 1 of scroll area 1 to true
                    end if
                end tell
            end tell
        end tell
    end tell
tell application "System Preferences" to quit
    on wait4window(this_title)
        tell application "System Events"
            tell process "System Preferences"
                repeat with i from 1 to 60
if the name of window 1 is this_title then return true
                    delay 1
                end repeat
            end tell
        end tell
        return false
    end wait4window

Let's double-check the amount of RAM in that machine. Click the Apple logo in the upper left corner & choose About This Mac. In the window that comes up, what's listed for RAM?
That machine will run Snow Leopard very nicely with 2GB of RAM. For it to run Mavericks, I would upgrade it to at least 4GB or more if it can handle it.
If I was in your position, I would run Snow Leopard for a while and see how well it serves you. If you want to upgrade, my  personal opinion would be to go to Mountain Lion, rather than Mavericks, but that is simply because I found that Mavericks slowed one of my machines to a crawl and was not pleased with the performance. Went back to Mountain Lion and it's humming along.

  • Repeated panics in com.apple.ATIRadeonX2000, after installing Snow Leopard

    Hi,
now for the 4th time around, I got a kernel panic with backtraces pointing to the com.apple.ATIRadeonX2000 driver. The previous 4 times it crashed while beeing fully idle, today it crashed while I was using the box.
The box in this case is a Mac Pro (Early 2008), with 2 ATI Radeon HD2600XT cards driving 3 displays. Everything is running on a powerfull UPS.
In early April I reinstalled the box on a SSD drive, and at the same time I upgradeded from 10.5 to 10.6 (Snow Leopard). About two-three weeks later (12th Apr) the first crash came, and then about a month later (20th May)  again. Then 16th June, and now today, 27th June..
    Here is each panic:

As mentioned, the only change introduced to the system is the SSD, and Snow Leopard instead of old Leopard. Before the change, I've never seen this crash a single time. A few panics maybe, but nothing related to this. I don't think blaming the SSD would be fair, if that would be the case much more random traces would be expected.
I'd say that this is a bad bug in the com.apple.ATIRadeonX2000 module.
Apple, any fixes for this? Update for SL or will it be addressed in Lion?
Anyone else seen similar crashes in this scenario?

Thanks Tom but the original post title was "Work in DTP, don't install snow leopard", but of course apple were unhappy with the title. I know the issue/problem has been discussed for months, the real problem is that it shouldn't be a problem which everyone has to find work arounds for.
After 4 days of playing about, I've finally got flash CS4 working and Quarkxpress was also a big problem for a few months. Printer description (PPD) files which snow leopard doesn't like, but worked in tiger & leopard.....means I can't use my two A3 inkjets for proofing anymore.
I'm just disappointed by snow leopard

  • Apple hardware test for snow leopard

I've tried booting from the snow leopard installation disk i have, i've tried holding down both D and Command+D, and neither of these key combinations work. My macbook will just boot like normal. And it's not an optical drive issue because i can hold C and get disk utility. So is the AHT even on this disk?
Is there another way of testing the hardware or some kind of freeware i can get?

If your Mac came with DVDs, Apple Hardware Test comes in one of these DVDs. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509 Insert the DVD that contains Apple Hardware Test, and hold the D key while your MacBook is starting. Make sure your Mac is plugged in and run an extended test.
Apple Hardware Test is not included in the retail Mac OS X Snow Leopard disc because there are different versions for each computer

  • Apple Tv not detecting Snow Leopard as a speaker ?

I'm running snow leopard 10.6.6, and my Apple Tv 1st gen is on the latest update. I can use airtunes from Snow Leopard to apple tv, however my mac isn't listed under speakers when i try to use apple tv as the source.
Do i need to enable my mac to be a speaker? or is something else wrong...
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks

(Reply to OP not you Winston!)
Assuming the AppleTV (which is not a backup) is synced with the computer, the files are presumably already in iTunes.
Logical answer then would be to use Apple's Remote app on an iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch to control itunes but you may not have one of these.
Unfortunately using a Mac as a 'speaker' is not possible - no reason why it shouldn't be possible, just not implemented in OS X.

  • Can I run Adobe CS, CS3, CS4, and CS5 software on Apple Mac upgrade forom Snow Leopard to Maveric OS X ?

I would like to know if I can run my older Abobe CS, CS3, 4, 5 on an upgrade from Mac OS X Snow Leopard  to OS X Mavericks ?

Might work; might not.  Legacy apps (CS2, 3, 4) that weren't built to run on modern operating systems may have trouble with Mavericks.   I think you'll be OK with CS5, 6 and CC.

  • We are no longer able to use the audio portion for ELPA testing after running apple software updates on snow leopard?

We are in the middle of OAKS TESTING.  We had to run the latest Java Updates inorder to do the ELPA portion of our State "OAKS" testing.  Since last Friday we cannot consistantly or basically cannot get the audio portion to work.  The sound and speech works fine in system preference but no longer for the testing.  It was fine last week.
Is there other school district having this issue in the state of Oregon?

When I try to do a "save as" in preview, pages, numbers, etc., there no longer is a save as in the pull down menu. If a go to help and type save as it will pop up under help - what a pain.
Save as is available in Mountain Lion by hitting the Option key while you access the File menu. (It was returned after being eliminated in Lion).
    My system is running slow!
How much RAM do you have installed? Mountain Lion is somewhat of a memory hog. And, how much free/empty hard drive space do you have?
And what is Mavericks? Is that going to change everything?
Apple announced a new OS a few days ago; it is supposed to be released in the fall.
When i open softwares, like quickbooks, it tells me that my QB wants to import my contacts.
The capability to sync is a new feature. You don't need to do it. I did not allow any app to import my contacts. You can also turn off other features if you do not like them - simply go through all the System Preference Panes and decide what you want and what you don't want.

  • Apple Mail on Snow Leopard 1.6.8

I'm aware this subject isn't new but still I find no solutions ....
Hence, very many thanks to anyone who will help me to solve this substantial problem
Since the unfortunate invention of Icloud my Apple Mail on Snow Leopard 1.6.8 no longer work properly.
    My machine:
    Model Name:          Mac Pro
    Model Identifier:          MacPro4,1
    Processor Name:          Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed:          3,32 GHz
    RAM 16 GB (Apple Original)
Mail should take care of my me.com accounts, but I also have other accounts located elsewhere with a different suffix (.it, co.uk)
I tried to set up Snow Leopard Mail following every single help tread here and at other websites. None of which seems to work properly, and the variety of "helps" simply tells me there is no "sound" system to use Snow Leopard with the current Apple Email set-up.
Yet "randomly" Mail will stop loading my "me.com" mail opening an error message telling me the "me.com" certificate is no longer trustable.ù
I instructed Apple Mail to "trust" the certificate, but this option does not work, or at least only works randomly.
Mails also never recognizes and loads messages from my other suffix adresses. It enters in an endless connection asking to verify either my User or pass, to finally put these accounts offline. Using Safari with my user and pass (the same as in Apple Mail) everythings works well.
More: if I am working on something else (Long Photoshop Actions, Final Cut Pro rendering and more), this window message halts everything.
This problem is serious, as I usually performed this work at night. or when I don't need to stare at a screen doing nothing.
I erased my computer with the 32 zero pass options and reinstalled the original Snow Leo system (MAC OS X 10.6.2) and this problem vanishes.
As soon as I update with the Combo Upgrade the problem begins again.
My upgrades are always "fresh updates" both as a direct update from the apple menu/Software update, or downloading the combo as dmg to then install.
The result is exactly the same.
I received a fresh copy from the local Apple Store in case my original had some magical problems, but nothing changed.
Yet I can't simply use SL 10.6.2 (the original software I got with the Machine) as many programs I paid for require the latest Snow Leopard.
While I could use another drive with SL 10.6.2, just for the Mail, is really a problem to reboot, to reboot again to continue my work.
In my heart I certainly believe email these days is a "public service" especially after paying thousand dollars over the years, and Apple policy to force user to purchase their latest machines and or, waste time to reconstruct their previous work to adpat it to their industrial policy is simply not fair.
While I understand and support advances in technology and so on, I believe this going forward shouldn't be done at the expenses of the customers, but "freedom of choice" is parts of all constitution as introduced centuries ago in the US.
I read in various site Apple was planning a Snow Leopard 10.6.9 version, but so far nothing happened. Maybe this project was dismissed.
Loosing important emails is a superior problem for my work.
I "have" to use Snow Leopard because I need the Rosetta function Apple discontinued in Lion and Mountain Lion.
Some readers might dislike this post, yet I used Apple since Apple II, I bought at least 100 machines since, I went through the various software/hardware changes, with ease. I believe my current anger is legitimate.
    Can someone please help?

you can save a little time - since Mail is one of the Optional Install items found by running the same-named installer within the folder on the DVD. you'll still need the 10.6.7 combo afterwards.

  • How long will Apple continue to release patches for Snow Leopard?

Now that Mountain Lion has been released, how long will Apple continue to support Snow Leopard with patches?

I think the support has already stopped for 10.6.8 if past practice is anything to go on.*
Past observation suggests Apple supports the current and the preceding OS.
On the  25th of July, 2012** it became no longer the preceding but relegated to 'bronze'.
    * exceptions have been known but are rare.

  • Does the Apple Snow Leopard install USB work with any macbook air?

    Hi guys and girls,
Im changing the hard drive in my MBA 2008 A1237 from the 80GB HDD to the 64GB SSD. Ive seen a Snow Leopard install usb on ebay for £15 so ive brought it.... but I was wondering if it would actuly work with my particular Air?
As my perivouse exspriance tells me that some install DVDs are tied to cirent products such as my iMac install dvd wont work on my Macbook..
    Thanks
    Firky

The OS X Lion Thumb Drive isn't being sold by Apple, so you need Snow Leopard. Buy Snow Leopard from Apple and use the USB SuperDrive to do it. Then, open Apple menu > Software Update and install the most recent version. If you don't want to spend more money, stay in Snow Leopard, but if you want Lion, call Apple to purchase Lion > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57

  • Is Apple going to release a security update for Snow Leopard to patch the new 'bash' bug?

What are the chances we will see Apple release a security update to patch this bash bug vulnerability? I really love snow leopard and don't want to update. At the same time, I don't want my computer to be vulnerable! Apple is still selling snow leopard, so are they still maintaining it?

    STWriter wrote:
OSx 10.6.8 IS INFECTED TOO -- news says ALL for about 25 YEARS !
I posted a site link -- check the thread.
10.6 does have the bash bug (I confirmed that a few replies back in this thread, and I mentioned the 25 years in another reply to this thread). But that is NOT an infection. Bash did not catch it. The bug was not put there on purpose. And the bug itself does not actively do anything. It is a flaw that can allow a web server using server side scripts written in the bash shell scripting language, or a server side script that invokes bash. Or a user that allows anonymous remote ssh logins. Or has enabled the CUPS web management interface.
All of which was said before in this thread. Along with why it is most likely not a problem for the typical Mac consumer.
This is a serious problem for many web servers.  And there are instructions for patching bash (see above).
The typical Mac user does not do the things that put them at risk. And if they know how to set their Mac up to put themselves at risk, they are knowledgable enough to follow the patching instructions.
