Apple TV 2 Network Connection Speeds - Wireless Observations

I have been following the Netflix, AirPlay and Sharing posts since the last upgrade. I never had any real issues except I thought I was having issues obtaining 5.1 DD from Netflix. Because of this, I found out I had cable line and modem issues that have since been resolved. I have been trying to assist others and have been monitoring the wireless connection speeds of my 3 ATV2's. The data below is in a "controlled" environment, only in the sense that I control it I do not know what the speeds were before the update, so please don't ask.
Using Airport Utility from my MBP, I see that for all iOS devices (ATV2, iPhone 4, iPad1) the maximum wireless connection speed (rate in utility) I get is 65 mbps. The wireless dongle for my TV will run at around 110, and my MBP will run from 170-270. The maximum rate is 300 for N wireless. All of the iOS devices connect using N, 5 ghz or 2.4 ghz.
With 4.3 (4.2.1), it appears that Apple has governed the ATV2 speed to match that of other 4.3 iOS devices so they work seamlessly together using AirPlay. I can't prove this, but it just seems logical. I'm also thinking that the same Airport chipset is in the ATV2, iPhone, and iPad1. I don't know what the maximum speed of the Airport chipset is in all of them, but I'm inclined to think Apple has reduced power to improve battery life for those with batteries. I'm also thinking that there may have been initial buffering issues between the devices at higher wireless rates and Apple "tuned" them for using AirPlay between them. Just thinking out loud here....

Surprise, the WI-FI chip in the ATV2, iPad V1, and iPhone 4 are the same chip
For that matter, the ATV2 looks like it has a 30-pin connector inside, and many of the same parts of the above. Bet this thing is built in to the actual TV Apple is developing. It has a spare slot for 8 GB more memory.....

  • Randomly losing network connection over wireless

Shortly after installing the 10.4.5 software update, my G4 iBook with built-in Airport Extreme card has been losing connection with increasing frequency. Built-in Ethernet use is unaffected. I'm calling this problem thrash-and-drop.
    1. When it's losing signal, processor activity goes through the roof. I had Activity Monitor running during a thrash-and-drop. kernel_task CPU consumption goes from under 1% before the event, to over 80% during the thrashing, and back under 1% after the thrashing stops. The activity is so bad the cursor can't be controlled: using the track pad sends the pointer all over the screen or nowhere at all.
    2. This has been observed to occur with two different wireless base stations: A Linksys WRT54G and an older SMC 802.11b router. Either router is within 10 feet of the computer. Only one is running at a time. There are no other base stations in range.
    3. Another iBook G4 (OS 10.3, Airport Extreme card (not built-in)), sitting next to it, shows no change and its wireless behavior is unaffected.
Initially, this seemed more likely to happen when Safari was loading Flash-heavy pages. And after thrashing and dropping a connection, it was able to reconnect after either a reboot or a five minute sleep. Currently, it can't connect to a base station for more than a minute. Most recently, it thrashed and dropped while I was selecting the base station to use. This is true regardless of the application running. In fact, it will thrash-and-drop when there are no user applications running at all, after a fresh reboot.
I've tried the following things to address the problem. None have affected the thrash-and-drop problem. Admittedly, most of this is random:
    1. Back up and delete network preferences in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
    2. Turn off IPv6 in System Preferences/Network
    3. Back up and delete network preferences in ~/Library/Preferences (com.apple.NetInfoManager.plist and com.apple.NetworkUtility.plist)
Has anybody else seen this problem? I want to blame it on the 10.4.5 upgrade but I haven't seen anybody else complaining about 10.4.5 doing this to them. If there's something I can do to fix this in a software setting, I'd much prefer that to yet another roadtrip to the Apple store.

    Hi!
I have the same problem of randomly losing network connection over wireless, though mine is hardly related to surfing.
I have an external storage drive in which I use for backup of my stuff, and I access the drive via my modem, using the airport. Of late, I noticed that when copying files from my iBook to the external drive, the connection would suddenly drop before the transfer is completed. This began to occur with increasing frequency, particularly when transferring large files.
I have since abandoned wireless connection, and reverted to my trusty cable. Still, I admit that I'm really curious about the cause of the apparent lack of reliability with my wireless connection. Has it something to do with the airport?

  • Does using more than one apple tv affect network connection

    My AppleTV has upgraded.
Since then the network connection has been very fragile
I have restarted the apple tv, the tv, and all the devices.
I have also restarted the modem.
    Nothing is working.
I have two apple tvs; so i am now wondering whether having both of them working might affect the network connection.
Or is there any other reason for such a fragile connection?  and what can be done to get a more stable connection?

Yes. I've been doing this. We have a family HP laptop with 750 GB of storage that is our library. One TV in the Den and one in the Family Room. Both have AppleTV's. I've had no problem simultaneously streaming to each AppleTV from the library computer. They both are synced to that PC as well ... mainly for photos. I originally was using my existing wireless-g network and this worked well. I recently put in a couple of Airport extreme units and they work great in wireless-n but I'm not sure it was really necessary ... I just wanted the AppleTVs to be able to stream and sync at their max possible speeds to minimize the possibility of slowing down of our network. The Airport Extreme's may have been overkill but they work really well ... easy to setup and we've now got a very strong wireless signal all over the house. Are you considering multiple AppleTV's?
A nice benefit of multiple AppleTVS is that you always have a backup remote control in case the kids (or maybe I)get absent minded.

  • Apple TV won't connect to wireless

I purchased my Apple TV in April and it worked great until about a month ago. It suddenly didn't appear in iTunes and had stopped syncing. When I checked network connections it wasn't connecting to my wireless network (which is Airport Express). I've tried restarting wireless network... resetting network, doing diagnostic on Apple TV, even doing a factory reset on the Apple TV..... nothing works... it won't connect to my home network. It doesn't even show up in the networks list... when type in the network name... it just reads "error connecting to network". Nothing changed from when it was working fine? I'm confused? is the Apple TV not working or is the Airport not working? All of my laptops in the house are not having a problem.

I'm not sure how much hassle it will be for you, but the fact that you say it sees the network sometimes tends to tell me it's not dead, I believe (but not one other member of this forum has supported or observed this) that some  wifi equipment has problems forgetting old settings. Would you be able to restore the tv and the express a few times consecutively and start your network again using a new name for your network and a new password etc (try not to re-use any settings from before) also between restores disconnect every cable to each device and leave for 30 seconds.
As I say there is no particular support for what is effectively a theory and if you feel I am just wasting your time, I would understand.
As your user name suggests you are in the US, I wouldn't pretend to understand the return policy over there, to be honest I don't understand the return policy over here, I've found you can phone  one day and get some guy who insists something has to be repaired and the next day get someone who sends a courier around the day after to collect the item and to deliver you a new one at the same time..

  • AppleTV - Maintaining Network Connectivity to Wireless Network

Should my AppleTV always maintain its connection to my wireless network?
Everytime I go back to my AppleTV, I have to re-establish my network connection by going under Settings>Network Configuration>Select My Network>Done, and then it will be OK...for a little while...
I can then access the iTunes Movie Trailers, Music Videos, etc., but if I then go back to content on my AppleTV for just a few minutes and then try to go back to the iTunes content, the network connection has been lost.
    AppleTV; PowerBook G4; D-Link DI-714P+   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

What's the physical proximity of the router to the
tv? Is there the possibility of a weak signal
    between the two?
Also, have you tried changing channels on the router?
I've had problems in the past on my 802.11g routers
with interference from neighbours causing drop outs
    on the connections.
Since most routers seem to come preconfigured for
channel 1 or 6, you're often best to pick just about
any other channel (since most of your neighbours
    probably won't).
I'd also suggest turning OFF any proprietary network
acceleration mode features that your router may have
(ie, the features that some D-Link and similar
routers have that provide a speed boost when using
    their own network cards).
Have changed the channel it was set to auto but changed to 3 I think still same problem. The ATV is about 5 feet away from the router. Moved it from the other side of the TV incase that was blocking the signal. Also the ATV always has a full signal when connected.

  • Apple TV unable to connect to wireless internet.

Many people seen to have this same connection problem of Apple TV with the internet.  I have to unplug the power cord to restart.  When it powers back up, I am unable to open "settings" which seems to be the only way to check or change things.  All other equipment using same wireless network are working fine.  I have not tried the steps where you connect your Apple TV to your computer and do a restore in iTunes.  Has that worked for anybody?

  • Apple Apps Lose Network Connection

Strange happenings today. All my Apple Apps (itunes, iphoto, safari, etc) are not able to connect via my ethernet connection. All other non-Apple apps (Firefox, Office-Entourage) are having no problems. No recent updates or major changes. Everything worked yesterday.
Any ideas where to start troubleshooting would be much appreciated.

OK, I'll answer my own question, just in case this happens to you.
Looks like during an update, the "web proxy" box had been checked in the Network settings (System Prefs). Once this was unchecked, everything worked fine.

  • Losing network connection (NOT WIRELESS) every 3 months

About every three months I get a 169 IP which I am told is a computer assigned "bad" ie non functional IP address.
The first timewas last november and the cable company spent 2 hours here and said cable was ok- while talking to apple- they never solved it it just came back on- it did it again today and when I clicked renew dhcp lease it would dim out but not reset the IP. after about 15 minutes I got a 171 IP .
    what cauises this ??
my airport is "not configured (I do not use it) and blue tooth is turned off.

    Hi.
I had an almost identical problem for several weeks, and I always knew everything was OK with my Mac. The problem turned out to be, as I suspected, on my ISP's side: The company had took over a rival ISP, and they were merging their networks.
Curiously, the WinPC users had no problems (including myself, as I had no trouble with my XP system during that time), while other Mac user in my area experienced the same problems I had with my Mac.

  • Apple TV lost network connections via ethernet again!

It seems that here lately every time I go to use my Apple TV I have to do a restart because it has lost its internet connection. I have a 3rd gen device and it's wired via ethernet. This problem didn't start until the last firmware update and after reading all the forums there doesn't seem to be a fix for it other than a restart. Hopefully Apple is working on a fix for this but in the meantime does anyone have a suggestion??

  • Internet/Ethernet network connection slows to a crawl

The last few days I've had a problem where the Internet network connection speed on my Power Mac slows to a crawl (about 1Mbps) and can only be fixed by re-starting the Mac which restores normal connexction performance for a while.
The Internet connection runs at around 35-37Mbps and is routed via a BT HomeHub 3. The laptops which connect via WiFi don't show any slowdown in speed tests, only the Mac Pro, which is connected to the Hub via Ethernet. I've tried swapping between the two Ethernet ports on the Mac but it doesn't make any difference. The HomeHub has been in for about 5 months but this problem has only just started in the last week or so and the period for which the restart restores the network performance seems to be decreasing.
Is there any way to reset network software, or some prefs I could delete?
    It's an early 2008 eight-core Xeon MacPro running 10.6.8, 8GB RAM.
    Thanks

    Hi Michael,
    Some things to try...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
The Interface that connects to the Internet, needs to be drug to the top of System Preferences>Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Cured one slow one that way here...
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16241503#16241503
    Clear caches, Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
Just sits there occupying very little space & never interfering, unless you need to invoke it in Single User Mode.
Open Network Utility in Applications>Utilities>Info tab, select the correct Ethernet & what is the Link Speed & are there any Errors/Collisions on the right?

No. it does not. No Arch installation would give you a desktop by default. It seems that you need to read more about Arch and its philosophy. You can however master your own ISO, if you are willing to go that route.
You might want to give some other distros a try. Maybe Debian or Ubuntu, or even Slackware which provides everything on a single CD or DVD.
I know Arch, but usually I install Arch with a NetInstall and I execute this command
    pacman -S xfwm4 xfce4-panel xfdesktop thunar xfce4-session xfce4-settings xfce4-appfinder xfce-utils xfconf
but this proccess is very slow and I thought that with core image that would be different.
Then I need a network connection....

  • Apple TV 1st Gen can no longer connect to wireless networks

My Apple TV (1st Gen) has recently lost the ability to connect to either of our wireless networks at home.  I rean the diagnostics at the reset screen and the Apple TV says it is performing normally.  In the settings, whenever I attempt to connect to a wireless network, I am now only offered "Other..." as a choice. Proceeding to the next screen, I enter the name of the network closest to the Apple TV -- an Airport Extreme set up for 5 GHz that this Apple TV connected with daily up until 2 days ago.  The Airport base station is perfoming normally, as my MacBook Pro can see it and establish a network connection without any difficulty.  The issue is limited to the Apple TV.  I did a Factory Restore, and now when I go to Wireless Network > "Other..." > Enter the name of the wireless network"  the resuit is always the same, and error message stating: "There was a problem connecting to the network. Check your settings and try again. (-4)".
This message comes up almost immediately, without requesting a WiFi password -- suggesting to me that this Apple TV has lost the ability to connect to ANY wireless network due to a hardware failure.
Q: Has anyone else in the Support Community had a similar experience with their 1st Gen Apple TV, and if so, did you find a solution to it?
Note: When I first noticed the connction to this Apple TV had gone stale (greyed out in the iTunes Airplay Speakers list), and prior to doing the Factory Restore, I could play back iTunes content stored on the hard drive, but could not connect to the local wireless networks.  I noticed that the Apple TV was running very hot -- it has alwasy run pretty hot to the touch.
If this Apple TV has died, I will get a 3rd Gen Apple TV, but wiill then have to work through the HDMI to Composite video + Audio issues, as this Apple TV is connected to our older (non-HDMI) TV.

Follow-up:  Able to connect with ethernet cable, downloaded software updates, connected to iTunes, and synchec content.
Next, disconnected the ethernet cable.  ATV1 froze and was restarted using the Menu + ( - ) combo on the remote.  Re-ran diagnostics yeilds: Apple TV is working fine.
Restarted, then went to configure the Wirelss settings.   Apple TV once again does not show either of the two wireless networks.  Selecting "Other..." and entering the SSID yields the same immediate response:
"There was a problem connecting to the network. Check your settings and try again. (-4)"
No change on the wireless front :-(   Bummer.
Looks like an ethernet connection is the only option left to continue using this Apple TV 1st Gen.
Thanks for your help. -- Paul

Are you using WEP, if you can try and use WPA.
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.
