Apple TV 2 Setup

Hi!
Just a quick question to see if this set up will work...
I have a Sharp XGF260X which only supports DVI and I am wanting to get an Apple TV 2 so I can mirror my iPad 2 onto the screen...
The set up is:
AppleTV 2 connected to projector using HDMI to DVI cable or adapter
AppleTV 2 connected to Airport Express
iPad 2 connected to Airport Express
Speakers connected to Airport Express speaker jack...
If i was to stream a video w/sound to the AppleTV will both video and sound work?

That article was written for the Apple TV 1. Although it doesn't say so, that much is clear from the mention of component cables and the requirement for iTunes 7.6
There has been much debate about this matter and as mentioned before some have been able to get it to work and others haven't. Users here have reported that Apple support have stated that DVI is not supported, quite frankly I wish Apple would make a clear statement about this, but until they do I'm not really willing to say anything other than there is no guarantee it will work.
My best advise would be to ask at the point of purchase, so that you can return the Apple TV free of any stocking charges should it fail to work, if they indeed say it will work.

I have an iPhone 4S and the latest Apple TV, both setup with my email address as the Apple ID. I subscribed to iTunes Match so our music could be played from iCloud. I gave my wife an iPad 3 and set it up using her email address as the Apple ID. When I try to turn on iMatch so she can play our music from iCloud on her new iPad it tells me that she needs a subscription to iTunes Match. Is it Apple's intent that we would need two iTunes Match subscriptions? If not, how do I accomplish what I want to get done?

The problem is that all services are bundled with your Apple ID ([email protected]):
Your iCloud account (Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes, Backups, etc.),
also iTunes & App Store purchases (Music, Movies, TV Shows, etc.),
and the iTunes Match services.
(I guess that all your devices - yours and your wife's are connected to one iTunes library, right?)
If you want that your wife gets her own iCloud account for Mail, Contacts, Calendars, etc. but gets also access to your media then you have two set up two things on her device:
iCloud (Settings > iCloud) with her account (e.g. [email protected])
and
iTunes & App Stores (Settings > iTunes & App Stores) with your account (e.g. [email protected]).
In this case she gets access to your library and could use the same iTunes Match account.

How do I rent SD movies on my 3rd Gen Apple TV? I have changed the output resolution in Apple TV's setup to 720, but it didn't make any difference.

I returned my 14 month old 3rd Gen Apple TV to the Apple store today because it would no longer see my wireless network. Apple said that because of this problem, it was still covered under warranty, and gave me a new one. Took it home and went through all the setup screens. Even downloaded the latest software update. Everything else appears to be working fine, but I can't rent a movie in SD like I used to be able to. Everything I've read says that the settings is where I change that, but the one setting that I did find and change, under audio and visual, made no difference. What am I missing?

This problem has been solved by me. The settings under the Apple TV menu for audio/visual do adjust for the output to your screen either 1080 or 720, but don't have any effect on the iTunes purchases.
The solution is under the Apple TV menu option "iTunes Store". There you can choose from 1080 HD, 720 HD or 720 SD. Now my movie selections in iTunes do offer the SD option.

2 users on imessage with the same apple id but setup so they messages can't be seen by each other

My kids are using my itunes account and they both just recently got ipod touches. They both use imessage but they can see each others messages. Is there a way to set it up so they can't see the messages for each other. I've got them setup with different email accounts so the emails are going to the right accounts, just need to separate the messages now. Please help me. Thank you.

This is not an area where I have any expertise, but you may want to consider using separate Apple IDs and using the recently released Family Sharing capabilities which still allow you to share your music and apps.

Apple Remote Desktop Setup for Exernal Networks

Hi there ,
i would like to setup apple remote desktop 3 in the office to control 6 Macs ( external Networks ) in 6 different places via Internet .
Do i need to buy a server or would it be enough to buy a Mac Pro - which setup would i need .

A server will do nothing for you, since ARD isn't a server-based application, per se. You can run a copy of ARD as a task server for a few functions (report gathering and software updates is about it), but that doesn't require Mac OS X Server or even a very fast Mac, just a second copy of ARD.

New iMac: filled out 'wrong' apple ID in setup assistant. What to do?

Our new iMac just arrived and eager as I was, I ran the setup assistant and filled out my apple ID (except for iCloud, skipped that to configure later) that I have for my iPad and iPhone. But since the Mac is the family computer, why buy all apps and stuff on my personal apple ID? Why not on a new apple ID to do all family purchases for the mac (and maybe for all other devices apps as well, I did some research and think I know the snags).
My questions: Are these all the services which are now linked to my Apple ID I filled out in the setup assistant? Or am I missing some?

FaceTime
If I reconfigure those four, with a (new) other apple ID, is my 'problem' solved?

If I were you, I'd set up a Separate User Name and password for each user in the house, so they can sync their own iPhones and iPads. But if all the iPads and iPhones are using the same Apple ID, I guess it doesn't matter.
Now, I'm not 100% sure what you're trying to do, but if you change the Apple ID (and use the new one in iTunes), it's going to cause some problems. You technically can have music and apps from more than one Apple ID, but it becomes a mess. I've got music from three other Apple ID's (I set them up at work for some unknown reason years ago).
Anyways, if we're not understanding your question, just ask away.

Which Apple ID at Setup?

We are about to set up a new iMac. All the data from an old iMac is backed up and will be restored from an external drive.
We have two Apple IDs: A "family" ID which is used for App Store, iTunes etc. and a "personal" ID for iCloud, messaging, calendars etc.
During the setup procedure, which ID would be best to use?
Is it easier to change the ID for App Store, iTunes etc. or for iCloud?
Does it matter much?

As it happens the issue didn't arise. When I restored everything from the Time Machine backup on the external drive, everything just worked
It never asked for any Apple IDs - just used the settings from the old iMac. Perfect!

Apple tv ipad setup

i want to set up my apple tv so i can display photos from my macbook pro plus my kid's ipads- 2, 3, 4. do i use airdrop or airplay; I can see both my installed networks( windows home network, airplay) ; at present i cant "see" a photo file installed on a flashdrive on my usb port on my macpro . how to access the photo file and display on the TV through Apple TV is my question

Airplay on the iPads, controlling what is displayed from the iPad.
With the Mac you can set 'photos to share' in iTunes, either selecting iPhoto or a directory where photos are kept. If the Mac is new enough you could potentially Airplay from that, but sharing allows you to browse via the AppleTv remote.

Multiple apple TV airplay setup

If i have 3 apple TV connected to 3 TV separately, and they are connected to the same router. When i use airplay from my ipad, will all 3 TV be showing the same screen from my ipad? or can i select my ipad content to show on which TV?

If I understand you correctly, then yes. Follow the instructions below to use either Basic AirPlay or Mirroring.
Assuming both devices are on the same network and that AirPlay is not turned off on the Apple TV, then simply tap on the screen when you are watching content you wish to stream to your Apple TV, then tap the airplay icon that appears in the control bar, choose the Apple TV from the menu that appears.
When displaying the content you wish to mirror on the iPad 2 (or better), iPad Mini, iPhone 4S (or better), double tap the home button (quickly) and swipe the bottom row of apps to the right to reveal the playback controls, tap the AirPlay icon and select your Apple TV from the list of available devices.

Hi, hope someone could help before i do purchase the whole package I need from apple.
This is the current network i did design, however I would really appreciate any tips or corrections regarding the set up.

One item of concern with your proposed networking diagram is that the INTERNET ROUTER. Are you suggesting using a combination modem & router or gateway device here? If it is, then your network, as designed, should work just fine. Usually, gateway devices incorporate a built-in multi-port switch.
The only other question I have is: Is the switch at: PORT 2 > ethernet connected TV AREA > SWITCH > PORT 1 AIRPORT EXPRESS the switch you identified with a double star? Otherwise I could not find this switch.

AAC vs. Apple Lossless, Library Setup

I'm just starting out with setting up my iTunes Library on a new hard drive (20GB), which I'm pretty much going to devote to music. Under the Preferences > Advanced Tab > Importing, we have the choice of encoding, and I'm not sure which would be better, AAC or Apple Lossless (?)
I'm planning to import around 400 CDs, and I've got another internal hard drive (120GB), to which I could go. This brings up, another question. When I set the place for my iTunes library, should I put in one spot, say on this newer, bigger hard drive, or could I split it across two different drives? If I wanted to move the library, after it's filled, how much of a problem is that?

The AAC format uses about 1MB per minute of song (5MB for a 5 minute song), where the Apple Lossless Encoder requires about 5MB per minute of song (25MB for the same 5 minute song). The AAC format is quite sufficient for ipod and computer speaker use. You may want to consider the larger Apple Lossless or even AIFF for music intended for playback on elaborate home stereo and theater use, but the AIFF format is the largest (about 10MB per minute of song, or 50MB for a 5 minute song). Be aware that Apple Lossless encoded songs will only play on iTunes, quicktime apps and certain ipod models (not all). What that means is that if you burn a CD in Apple Lossless, it will not play on your home CD player. The only way to use Apple Lossless on your home CD player will be through an airport express.
I regret I do not know the answer to your second question regarding splitting a library over two hard drives.

ITunes Apple ID/Family Setup

Hi - I'm looking for advice from anyone who has set this up. Like many folks, I've accumulated a couple of Apple ID's...then there is my wife who has at least one. I want to set up the Family ID service but want to make sure I choose the best "master" ID. Here is essentially what I have:
Apple ID #1: This is my oldest. It is what I use for these forums and made early iTunes content purchases with.
Apple ID #2: I use this for Messages and as of now has been my primary iCloud ID - it started as a .me account (contacts, etc, - separate from my wife)
Apple ID #3: Wife's old original attains ID
Apple ID #4: Wife's iCloud ID (for contacts, etc - separate from mine)
Apple ID #5: a current shared ID we have used for new iTunes purchases over the last two years. We do use this for our SHARED calendar - nothing else.

Thanks for the link Eric, however I have already authorised from the Admin.. when i redo it it tells me that I have already authorised this machine. When I look for the SC Info folder, it says it can't be found. I looked using finder and also searched using spotlight.. Nada :-(
I wonder if it is because I am using lion?
Also it may be related to the itunes helper application, since I notice that it works fine until i sync my iPhone 4s...
Any ideas?

Settings>iCloud>Delete Account. Choose if you want to delete or keep the data from the wrong ID in your iPhone. If you choose "delete from iPhone" the data will not delete from iCloud server. The add a new iCloud account with the ID you want.
Maybe you want to change the Apple ID in iMessage and FaceTime to. Go to settings>messages/FaceTime to sign out and back in with the ID you want.
