Apple TV 2: Slow Download / Loading / Ready To Play Times

I've been very disappointed so far with trying to rent TV shows to watch on my Apple TV 2 and I'm wondering if someone can explain the process it is going through before it allows you to watch something you've rented.
Here's my experience so far:
I chose an hour long TV episode to rent / watch. Apple TV 2 tells me that it will be 45 minutes before it's ready to watch. This seems extremely long to me as I've got very fast connection speeds and the Apple TV 2 is hard connected to my ethernet (it's close enough to the router so that I can get away with not using Wi-Fi. Considering that downloads from iTunes are 720p, not 1080p, why would it need to download for an entire 45 minutes? If I try to rent the same show on my MacBook Pro, it is ready to watch within 5 minutes. Does the Apple TV 2 not allow you to start watching what is already buffered while it continues to download?
I decide to just let it download in the background and watch it another time. Two days later I turn on the Apple TV 2 and it says the show is ready to watch. So I hit play and I get "Loading..." with the spinny dashes ball. It does that for a while and then tells me: "Ready To Watch in 15 minutes". I wait for about 5 minutes before I get frustrated and just decide not to watch it again. If it has fully downloaded the content and says it's "Ready To Watch" in the menu, then why does it need another 15 minutes to load it from memory? It should be instantly available at that point.
Any suggestions? Comments? Similar experiences?

There are two issues with the ATV2 that need fixed. I have a slow DSL internet hook up, but could still rent a movie with my ATV1 and start watching it in under 15 minutes or so. With my ATV2, I have to wait at least 1 hour to start watching an SD movie. Of course, we will never rent an HD movie on the ATV2 - tried that once - 61 hours for load time.
The second issue deals with restarting a current rent. We rented a movie tonight and let it take 55 minutes to load before we could start watching it. I assumed that if I stopped it for a few minutes (I needed to change an audio setting in the menu), that I could restart the movie without it having to totally reload. No deal. We had to wait another hour for reload. This seems like a simple software update fix. Anyone know if they are working on this?

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel.

My New Apple TV is Slow to load TOO....Any Solution Yet?

Hi Everyone,
I can play every video on you tube wireless on my iMac in a split second. The same movie on Apple TV is SLOW!! Sometimes they don't even load and it goes into the screen saver mode. This has nothing to do with router or speed since I have one of the fastest connections and an airport extreme router. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

It isn't just a case of the interface. As I understand things the you tube videos you watch on the tv are AVC files and those that you watch on the imac are not and whilst I can't be sure this is likely to mean they come from different servers.
As I say others have reported issues with watching you tube on the tv and not on their macs, some have noted that the longer the video the more likely the issue.
I myself have not seen this, but as you can see I am in an entirely different location to you (where the tv may not be quite as popular and the iphone has only just been released). Another consideration is whether you or your ISP are using proxy servers which may well explain such behaviour.

Apple tv 1 slow download with strong network speed.

Have had the apple tv gen 1 for a long time with no issues. Quick download speeds, trailers etc worked and we could stream a movie with only 2 % o f the film downloaded. Now one hour to download at least.
Checked the wifi bandwidth and the network and all is super fast. Version of firmware is 3.0.2
Any ideas how to get back to my original download speeds ? Or is this an issue at the Apple end.

Apple TV 3 slow to load

I know there's been a lot of posts about this but has anyone actually come up with anything to helps?
The issue I am experiencing is this;
When I first go to the ATV menu and try and load the iMac library it can take minutes to load, when it eventually loads it buffers 10-15 secs of a TV show, stalls, buffers again... these are loading locally by the way, not from the Apple store. My iMac is connected vie Ethernet to an Airport express, the Apple TV is connected via wireless, signal strength is excellent.
The only way I can avoid all of this is to restart both iTunes and the device each time I want to watch something, then it loads instantly, buffers well ahead so no stutters. If a restart of these didn't help me I would think I had a network issue, but simply restarting iTunes doesn't rectify any network problems... does it?
Anyway, it's getting very frustrating, I beginning to regret giving away my 1st Gen ATV, never had any issues with that.

Certainly does, temporarily.

There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

Apple TV very slow download since updating to new OS/UI

I've had Apple TV since version v1 and am currently on v2.
Whenever renting a movie the downloads are always ready to watch with 30-60 secs. It's been this way for years. Same router, same connection, nothing has changed with the exception of the ATV device. But both worked fine.
But since updating my Apple TV v2 OS 3 weeks ago to the new (awful) UI, download rentals have been taking up to 3 hours and can't be watched for at least 2hours.
What's happened?
I have checked download speeds and all is fine. ATV is connected in the same way via the same router. The only thing that has changed is the new update.
Any ideas guys?

whenever i've rented an HD movie it was ready to watch within 60 seconds.
Do HD rentals include the iTunes extras? Because the movies I've rented that said" including iTunes extras" don't seem to have them, unless I'm not looking in the right place.
selected movies have itunes extras (not all).
don't think the rentals do though, only purchased movies have the extras.

Apple Trailers really slow to load on ATV3.

Is this something Apple needs to fix or is it my problem? Everything else streams fine, Netflix etc. but trailers takes almost as much time to load the trailer as it does to watch it.

I went to settings and then to trailers then set to standard. Not as good video but loads fast no chop.

Apple TV agonizingly slow downloads since Dec 08-Jan 09.

Since late December I have noticed horrible download times from Apple TV movies. I am running 12,544 KB/s down with 22ms latency on DSL Reports speed tests. I have had the Apple TV for months and it usually downloads and lets me start watching a movie ( HD or regular) within 30 seconds while it continues to download. Now it is taking 8 hours on random nights. I have reset the router and cable box to no avail when I run into this problem. needless to say, it's most frustrating and not Comcasts fault as I have run extensive tests.
Anyone have info on this recent problem??

Same here, in looking it's pulling data from a72-246-51-6.deploy.akamaitechnologies.com
however it's doing only about 60 packets a second. In the past it would do about 1200 packets a second. At 60 it's come back in 7 hours, at 1200 which it was pre january time frame (and maybe 10 or 20 seconds when starting a download) you could watch the entire movie right away.

I want to go back to 3.6, 4.0 is slow, it crashes, it freezes, it doesn't work with my blog, did I mention slow. Not ready for Prime Time.

4.0 sucks, I want to go back to 3.6. Please don't force us to 4.0 until ALL the kinks are worked out!

Sorry to hear it isn't working for you. I know everyone has different add-ons and sites they visit, so it's hard to compare experiences. (Works great for me.)
First, make a backup of your computer for safekeeping. To back up Firefox, see [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information].
Next, download and save Firefox 3.6 to your desktop for future installation. http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-older
Close Firefox 4, and uninstall it. Do not remove your personal data and settings, just the program.
Then finally you can reinstall Firefox 3.6. Unless you have installed an incompatible add-on, it should pick up where you left off. If there are serious issues, please post back with details.
Note: I haven't actually tried this downgrade myself!

(Help)Ipod slow at loading songs when playing.

Hi Sorry if this has been answered already but I have a 20gb Ipod. Latly I've notice that when I use it sometimes it takes a lot longer for a song to load once I switch from one to the next. Wait time can be anywhere from 30seconds to a min. Anyone have this same problem or know anyway to fix it? Thank you in advance for all your help.

IE slow to load first page each time.

We are experiencing an issue where when a user opens Internet Explorer 10 on a Server 2012 RDS session host the first page in a new tab takes 8-10sec of sitting there then loads quickly all subsequent page loads on any domain as very fast after this.
If you close IE and try again, same issue occurs
Server is 2012
IE is 10.
all addons disabled, no proxy, testing vs and internal webserver on 10G so sub 1ms latencies.
tried reseting IE, using software instead of GPU rendering, rebuilding profile, disabling Anti-Virus, disabling IPv6
Anyone have any ideas?

This can be due to installed addons on the browser. You may try disabling them and try it

Slow to load BB

Hello, Im new to BT but have BT phone and Broadband unlimited evening and weekends. My BB was switched on on 28th August and I realise it can take up to 10 days to stabilise from reading the info given. However it is very slow to load pages which often time out and its impossible to play games on XBOX live or watch youtube clips as it is still that bad. Will it improve at all?

Sorry to hear that your having problems with your broadband.
Please see Keith's help guide here: Helping forum members to help you, it will go through some checks that are needed for us to help you.
A summary of the checks are:
1) you should be connected by the BT NTE5 master socket as extension sockets can reduce broadband performance
2) Can you please run a BT speed test (including IP Profile) http://speedtester.bt.com (not beta version)[Best done with a wired, ethernet, connection]
3) is there any noise on your line. dial 17070 option2 from landline. should be silent but slight hum normal on cordless phone.
4) please post adsl line statistics

If you have a BT Home Hub like the one below...
Then:
1) Go to http://192.168.1.254 or http://bthomehub.home
2) click Settings
3) Click Advanced Settings
4) Click Broadband
5) Click Connection or sometimes called ADSL (see picture Below)

Thanks for the pointers folks. Yeah, 1.5GB is pretty poor isn't it? There are other suppliers, but you have to get a their phone line installed to access the internet so it's an £85 setup fee plus a day off work for a guy to come round and drill a hole in your wall before you even get to the monthly costs.
Don't get me wrong though - I'm certainly not an Apple basher, but am equally frustrated with both them and the ISP.
Virgin Media spend all kinds of money advertising their broadband as the fastest in the UK, but don't tell you (up front anyway) that you'll be cut off if you actually try and use it.
Apple on the other hand carry on with their 'it just works' mantra, but with Apple TV this only applies if you meet certain criteria (again, not mentioned up front).
I guess it aint a biggie, as i was gifted my Apple TV, and love all the other stuff it does, but from the number of posts on this forum can see that there's a lot of angry customers out there who want explanations as to why they're having similar problems to me.
Will be very interesting to see if Apple release any kind of software update that turns the flash drive from a buffer to permanent storage, to at least ease some of the pain...

To download a movie on the new Apple Tv 1080p, I have to be in the the ready to play screen, It takes Forever to download a movie, the other day I download a movie and didn't have to be waiting on that screen, I was watching DirecTV and the next day when the movie was Fully Download I Watch the movie. Does this Apple TV has a small hard drive to save at least one or two "rented movies"? Thanks...

No.
The black AppleTVs have no hard drives.
They have some solid state memory to buffer movies but it's not like a download that stays on the device.
The memory is recycled for other tasks when you use AppleTv for other tasks and this happens without warning.
You need:
2.5 Mbps internet to watch SD near instantly, 6 Mbps for 720p HD and 8 Mbps for 1080p HD.
If you find downloading far too slow you could reduce to 720p or SD in itunes store settings for the unit, or alternatively download to iTunes on your computer instead then play back on AppleTV under teh Home Shared Computer icon.
