Apple tv 2 vs Frontrow

Does Apple TV 2 look more like FrontRow? For example, can I view iPhoto events? Can I see iMovie clips? Or will it still only show iPhoto albums and movies I've loaded into iTunes.

Exactly what tv 2.0 can do is quite vague at this time, it may be a good idea to look at the reports coming from those that have had hands on experience of it from the expo.
I wasn't aware front row can display iphoto events, even after today's update, can you confirm this point for me.
I think it unlikely that the tv will play im08 events, IMHO they are in the wrong format and will require more horsepower than the tv has.
No it won't only show stuff you have in itunes, one of the major developments of the upgrade is that it can now work independently from your computer and pull much more content from the internet.

  • FrontRow on a Mac Pro?

Is there any way to get FrontRow working on a Mac Pro? I have a FireWire iSight camera so I consider this a reasonable request. I cannot find the software on my Mac. All I can find at apple.com is a FrontRow updater package.

Being a hack, it may fail to work with system updates. Previously the hack broke with 10.4.3 though was later able to work again when Front Row was updated. When it broke, it caused the menubar to no longer work right. So backup before you upgrade your operating system if you decide to install the hack.
You can also buy a programmable USB based remote that works with the Mac and use it in conjunction with Equinux's Media Central:
    http://www.equinux.com/us/products/mediacentral/index.html
Not the same as Front Row, but has some features Front Row does not and may be worth checking into.

  • New iTunes Movies Won't Play in Front Row

I have tried contacting support and the local store but all I have found out is that Frontrow isn't supported anymore though lack of interest.
I found that all my old movies still play in Frontrow but all but one of recent downloads from iTunes just plays audio with a black screen.
The Apple suggestion was to download a third party programme to replace Frontrow.
Apple mentioned XBMC and Plex appears to be an alternative.
I haven't tried any alternatives and would be interested to know if anyone uses these and if they are easy to use without being a computer programmer.  Also do they work with the white remote?
New iMacs don't even come with a remote.
I mainly use my iMac as a multimedia centre and was building up an iTunes movies folder, even though the movies can be more expensive.
The recent movies still play directly from iTunes but having to start the movie from the iMac seems a really backwards step.
Support claim that my problem is uncommon and they don't have a fix.
I am using Snow Leopard.  By the way Lion doesn't even include Frontrow.
This appears to be really stupid of Apple and has stopped me buying movies from iTunes.  One of the features that set iMacs apart from PC's is their out of the box setup with remote access to your media.
Get your act together Apple and fix this problem!
Does anyone have any advice on this issue.

I was annoyed when I saw that Apple killed support for FrontRow too. I'm not sure why they would do this, I liked to use it all of the time.
Plex and XBMC are certainly good alternatives and is probably what you'll want to use to replace FrontRow. (Plex would be my first choice:) )
Another suggestion might be to get an Apple TV to solve this issue. I'm assuming you used FrontRow while your computer was connected to a TV or monitor. An Apple TV has the same sort of interface as FrontRow and would surely play your iTunes Movies.
I kinda hope they bring it back in the future :/
    Hopethis helped!

  • Corrupt AlbumData.xml - no shared pictures

Hi, I'm referring to this problem here: http://derivadow.com/2006/12/30/iphoto-photos-not-appearing-in-front-row/ it just occurred at my parent's MAC using iPhoto 09: the pictures didn't show up on their Apple TV.
After long investigations I found the XML error in the AlbumData.xml : it was an "&" used in the album title(!) of a song used in a iPhoto 09 slideshow (!!)
So I fixed the problem by deleting the "&" from the mp3's metadata and adjusting it in the slideshow.
    BUT
quite obviously this is a known bug since 2006 (see link above) - this is three years ago. Nobody EVER told me to "never use "&" in iTunes". Nor did any of the iLife programs communicate the real problem - it just tried to parse the xml file. If I open it in Safari, the XML error showed up at once.
This is a very unpleasant situation hence I have no idea in how much of the 20.000 classic MP3s of my dad "&" signs are used - so this is a ticking time-bomb.
    Any ideas?

    - will there be a bugfix that makes the parsing of a corrupt albumdata.xml more robust. Right now users are kept in the dark why there is no link e.g. from the Apple TV or in frontrow.
    - will there be a patch that auto-corrects xml-errors in an existing albumdata.xml
    - will there be a patch for iTunes, iPhoto etc. to prevent users from ingesting "bad" characters like "&"
    - will there be a script that auto-corrects large libraries of iTunes (mp3 metadata), iPhoto (keywords etc.) from errors

  • Playing imported video with button

So I'm working on a project that requires me to click a transparent button in the Flash presentation and have an imported video appear, play, and then disappear. I've scoured the internet but can't for the life of me find what I'm looking for. Would someone be willing to give me a hand. I'm new to Flash and this honestly sounds easy enough but I can't for the life of me figure it out.
    Thanks

    Hi,
I have the same issue with my video clips mixed with photos in the iPhoto Library!
Is there really no possibility to show them in a mixed mode with FrontRow?
@Apple: Cant' you update FrontRow with this feature?
The only application I found for that issue is Photeo Presenter!

  • Before I buy my Mac Mini

Although the answers to the questions below will probably not sway my decision to buy a Mini, they may well enhance the experience even more.
With Boot Camp, can I load Windows MCE?
I currently have all of my DVD's ripped to several terrabytes of hard disc [external] and use an extention of MCE called my movies which allows me to see trailors, artwork etc for all of my ripped DVD's, understanding that if the former answer is positive then this would not be an issue, if the answer id negative, will front row "see" and "play" these DVD's on my external drives? and will I be able to use a similar MAC application to see cover artwork etc?
I notice that the Mini has an optical audio out, so I can feed this to my AV AMP, is this 5:1?
    thx in anticipation
    PC   Windows XP

    Hi Again ani4ani
    You said:
"Just for clarity, assuming that the Mini sees my external drives, would the DVD's be played via iTunes or Front Row? Or is Front Row just another view of iTunes?"
OS X plays DVD's in either of two ways. You can either watch them on your desktop and resize the playback window accordingly using DVD Player, or you can have them instantly displayed full screen from the push of a button in front row. They are not played in iTunes! Front row is a media centre like application that ties all of your audio, pictures and video together in one easy to control, graphic rich environment on screen. It generally acts the same way that media centre does in windows, only it looks nicer and works better!
    You Said:
"Would I be able to see DVD artwork as I can see in MCE now or is it simple cut-n-paste like I would for CD album artwork which I can do in "Windows" iTunes now?"
I don't actually think that OS X displays DVD artwork for some reason, however I may be wrong. Take a look at the mac mini front row demonstration here http://www.apple.com/uk/macmini/frontrow.html just to see an example of what you would be getting.
    You Said:
"My external drives are obviously full of CD's in WMA format along with my ripped DVD's. I can assume that these would just be "seen" by iTunes and / or Front Row and wouldn't have to anything special to the drives. These drives are USB2 / 1394 btw
iTunes for Mac does not import WMA files, and therefore you would not be able to play them on a mac mini. The good news is, however, that WMA files can be imported into iTunes for Windows. You could simply import all of your WMA music into iTunes on your windows pc, select which audio file type you would like it to be converted to, and then the new audio format will be compatible with iTunes on the mac. It's a little confusing and a mystery why they don't allow WMA support in iTunes on the mac. You can read this article for a little more help - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107958
If you need to ask for anything else clarrifying clearing up etc, dont be afraid to ask!
Hope that I may have been of further help

  • ITunes Top Movies

OK. Newbie question here. I selected a top movie in the "iTunes Top Movies Selection" and it started playing immediately (and indicated it was 2 hours 20 minutes long). I then cancelled (escaped out). I assumed that it would ask me if I wanted to rent the movie? How does that work? I hope it doesn't automatically charge my iTunes account without checking first?

It was definitely Front Row. The menu looks like the this:
    http://www.apple.com/imac/software/frontrow.html
I selected the first menu item, then the Top Movies selection, and then selected the movie ("Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End"). Maybe this is a new version of Front Row?

  • Why was FrontRow discarded in Lion? and how can we influence Apple to put it back?

Although FrontRow had it's limitations I used it every day. I very recently bought an iMac and ordered the remote as well. After having updated to Lion the remote appears pretty useless and my usage of the iMac has dropped 50% at least. What can be the reason FronRow was dropped? Is this the right place to let Apple know there are some users that are very dissatisfied with the decision to drop FrontRow?

  • Apple remote always controls itunes / frontrow

I just installed Snow Leopard and came to the conclusion that the 'Apple Remote' always controls itunes/frontrow/audio +/-. This is really annoying since I want to control thirdparty software like Plex Media center.
Is there a way to disable the remote for itunes and the audio? I already uninstalled frontrow, but that didn't help.

In order to control third-party software, you need third-party software! Check out Remote Buddy. This program allows you to configure your Apple Remote to work with other applications. Download the trial and see if it works for you. (Note: I haven't used this application, I just happen to know it exists.)

  • Rehearse Slideshow w/ Apple remote triggers FrontRow

I've run into an odd problem with "Rehearse Slideshow" when I use the Apple remote.
The Ffwd and Rew buttons work fine. But if I press the Menu button, FrontRow gets launched. Press Menu again and I'm returned to my desktop, not Keynote (which was still running the rehearsal). And then if I hit play, iTunes starts playing a song!
I've only been working with Keynote for a few days and planned to use it for a presentation this week. I'm concerned that a Keynote / remote combo is really buggy. The documentation says nothing about the remote.
Anyone have any tips on Keynote & the Apple remote? Is it safe?
    Thnx

I pressed the menu button... to see what it does! The manual mentions a slide menu appearing in Play mode. The last thing I expected was FrontRow..

  • Frontrow and Apple Tv

    Hello
can somebody use the Apple TV with front row, Basically use the apple tv as a hub, or can it only be used via Itunes or can there be a short cut like in front row to link to an external harddrive.
also if I sync the movies to apple TV and then delete them from the computer will they also be deleted from the Apple TV machine. I am asking to have space on my computer
    thanks

AppleTV can not serve media to other iTunes or Front Row - it's a client not a server/share.
iTunes handles data transfers to and from AppleTV the latter being to reverse sync purchases mad on it to enusre it's in sync with iTunes.
or can there be a short cut like in front row to link to an external harddrive.
All media syncing or streaming to AppleTv is via iTunes.
Media in iTunes can be stored on an external drive (select not to copy to library when adding) but AppleTV relies on iTunes to 'feed' it the data.
also if I sync the movies to apple TV and then delete them from the computer will they also be deleted from the Apple TV machine.
Yes, because when you delete them from iTunes it's assumed you don't want them on AppleTV either. If they're referenced in iTunes but on an unconnected external drive they don't delete fro AppleTV.

  • Frontrow left running @ 100% after returning to Desktop - bugfix required

Tonight my wife and I were watching iTunes TV Show Videos on our living room TV using her black Macbook with lid closed for about 4-1/2 hrs. I had downloaded these TV videos with iTunes on my PowerMac G5 and shared them to the Macbook. The Macbook was connected to the TV using the Mini DVI to video adapter and a sound connection from headphone jack on Macbook to the TV sound L/R inputs. The Magsafe power was connected all the time. The TV videos played just fine and we paused the Front Row periodically.
When we were done watching the videos I powered off the TV and disconnected the Mini DVI and the sound connections and removed the Magsafe power. I the opened the Macbook lid and the fans started to pick up and make a fair amount of noise.
I launched Terminal.app and launched top to see what was running and found Frontrow was running at around 100% cpu with its resident memory growing at an alarming rate. I watched this for about 5 mins and Frontrow climbed to just over 500 MB with the cpu use still at around 100% all this time.
I used the remote to see if I could get the attention of the Frontrow process that was using 100% cpu and memory bloating but to no avail. The rcd (remote control daemon) process did launch when pressing the remote's Menu button but it did nothing.
I then decided enough was enough and I quit the top display and issued a 'kill 508' where 508 was the Frontrow PID. Frontrow was killed and when using the Remote the Frontrow restarted as it should.
Thought I should post this Frontrow anomaly in case others may be wondering why their Frontrow doesn't quit as it should when returning to the Desktop mode.
I will also send feedback to Apple about this mis-behaving Frontrow.
Anyone else experience this Frontrow behaviour ?

I forgot to mention a couple of things.
The communication for sharing the iTunes TV Videos between the PowerMac G5 and the Macbook was via Airport Express which was located some 25 feet away from the MacBook and the signal strength was at max.
I was also running 10.4.7 on both the PowerMac G5 and the Macbook.
The Macbook is equipped with 2gig RAM also.
No other Apps were running with Frontrow on the Macbook other than iTunes for accessing the PowerMac's shared iTune's Video files.
There was one moment during watching the videos on the TV when sharing stopped. This was because the PowerMac was set to sleep via Energy Saver at 1 hour of zero activity. THis was resolved by waking the PowerMac G5 up and configuring it to never sleep.

  • Apple TV not showing movies that are in itunes library

I have recently purchased a MacBook Pro ("MBP") having come from a Windows machine. I have a lot of video content that is in DivX or similar format as that was the preferred format for me at the time.
In switching to the Mac, I simply opened up my existing files in Quicktime X and went save as "Movie". This enabled my previous content to be added into itunes. All the files work perfectly in front row on my MBP.
On purchasing the Apple TV, i thought all this content (as it was saved as .mov files) would be readable by the Apple TV. I have tried checking, unchecking boxes in itunes but to no avail, they just aren't visible on the Apple TV.
There are limitations on the data rates for the Apple TV and I am aware of that but the bulk of the movies I am talking about are actually TV shows from my DVD collection (The Wire as an example) that would struggle to be 480p at most.
If it can play it in Front Row, why can't it see the files and play them on Apple TV? Do i have seriously have to buy Quicktime 7 Pro just to get these files right?
Also, I hope the home sharing thing is shortlived, it's always been an issue. I'd rather open up my MBP and stream audio and video via Airplay to the Apple TV, that would suit me fine. Personally, I think the home menu structure on the Apple TV is pretty ugly, they could have done better than that (putting a highlighted box around menu titles is 1980's stuff).
    Any help appreciated.

FrontRow is far more capable than AppleTV in terms of codec support.
They really need to be in h264 format for AppleTV (MJPEG is also now supported but not really a good conversion otpion).
    Forget QT 7
Google Handbrake, run you original files through that using AppleTV preset and add to iTunes, you should be good to go.
Alternatively right click on a file in iTunes that doesn't play and choose 'crete AppleTV version', though that my take some time!

There are far worse interfaces out there, though I think the current one is a backwards step from 3.02 on 1st generation.

  • Is it possible to combine one Apple ID music library with another Apple ID music library on ONE computer? If so, how?

I have two Apple ID's and I want to combine the itunes file so that they are on one computer and I can sync all the files to my ipod. Is that possible?? Help!

I've been doing some experimenting on this. I made a smart playlist in iTunes to gather all my music videos (which I have previously tagged with 'VIDEO' in the comment field).
In Frontrow, iTunes will not play the video at all- it just shows a single frame and plays the audio; in Movies, music videos, it will play one music video correctly, but then go back to the music video menu. This seems to be a known problem.
My solution is to go back to the desktop and use iTunes in the old fashioned way! Selecting my new VIDEO smart playlist will play all my music videos in any order I like using the normal parameters i.e. random, alphabetical by artist, album, name etc..
    Hope this helps.
