Apple TV 3 HDCP Error

Hi, I have an Apple TV 3. I can watch videos from the apple tv itself like the trailer and movies. However, whenever I tried airplaying from my iPad device. The video loads for a few seconds and I will get a HDCP Error. I've checked up the solution and many of you suggested the handshake error, and have to remove the cables etc. But I've done this countless time and this definitely isn't the issue. It use to work with airplay when I just got it, the problem definitely isn't with the TV or the Cable. Can someone help me?

Playing DRM movies from your ATV, does not prove that it used nor negotiated HDCP successfully.
HDCP is not part of apples DRM, it is part of the Bluray standard to protect the link from a Bluray player to the TV and the Apple TV may be exempt from its use.
But AirPlay is even used on my Pioneer AVR, so maybe Apple had to sign up to the HDCP protection, since they might want to include AirPlay in future TV sets to make HDMI cables redundant.
In any case there is any number of HD media that will play thru HDMI without an HDCP link, HDCP is not required for everything sent over HDMI.
I'm just saying that maybe AirPlay had to include HDCP and maybe  the ATV is exempt, that is all I was trying to say.
I also had an bad experience with HDCP, to the point that I thought I needed a new TV, but which turned out to be something wrong in the HDMI cable. The cable worked or not worked depending on how I twisted or bent the cable coming out of the tv.
Now I have writers cramp and an ugly wordy reply!

  • Hdcp error on apple tv

Hi, have rented a movie from iTunes on apple tv 3 and hdcp error keeps coming up and won't play movie. Please help!!!! Not sure how to fix???

I recently purchased an Apple TV3 and discovered the dreaded HDCP error as well.
I read through a lot of forums and have listed in order what worked for me.  The best solution at the top, some solutions included because, this is 2013 and I still laugh that they were suggested.
    Resolving the HDCP Error
    (1) Change your HDMI cable to a high speed HDMI cable. My TV was HDCP compliant even though it was a first generation plasma.  Thanks Panasonic!  But my HDMI cable was not high speed.  AppleTV would work some days and not others.  It sucked.  Then I swapped an HDMI highspeed cable from my PVR sitting in the corner (good riddance cable) and I have no longer seen the HDCP Error.  I am keeping my fingers crossed and feel my eylids flicker everytime we fire up an episode of Dexter.  Are we going to get the 3 second death pause?...  So far no.  (Post Enraging HDCP Error Syndrome  PEHES)
(1A) Using HDMI port #1 - apparently most TVs don't have HDCP built into all HDMI terminals.  This was the case with mine.  My appleTV will only stream protected content when I have the cable in the first terminal.
    (2) Updating your AppleTV software - when an update is available, I have found the appleTV won't stream without it.
    (3) Resetting the appleTV - this includes:  powering down the unit, powering down the TV, unplugging the cords (HDMI and power) from the AppleTV and the TV, waiting 30 seconds and reconnecting.  This worked only intermittently for me.
    (4) Same as 3, but 40 min wait - really? yes really.  This worked only intermittently.  And is comical.  "Now go manually discharge your capacitors!"
    (5) Changing the Video Settings on the AppleTV - someone suggested that changing the video settings on the apple TV may actually "reset the device"  This did not work for me.
    (6) Re-installing AppleTV - seriously?  to stream my content I have to re install the appleTV software?  I eventually tried this too, and while it took a long time and was annoying, did not work.
Anyway, I hope this is helpful to someone with the same problem in the future.

  • Apple TV HDCP error - very strange

    hello,
So my Apple TV is a couple years old now and I have never had any issues with it - it has been working with 3 different TVs of mine over the last couple years - I have just tried to use it in a different TV and I keep getting the HDCP error every time I try to play anything on it.
My friend uses his Apple TV perfectly fine on this TV and I have tried with his HDMI cable etc. and I still have the same error which makes me think it is an issue with the box itself.
It is still working just fine on my other TV it's just the new one it won't work on - I have tried all the usual diagnostics even resetting everything to factory settings.
    Any ideas anyone?

    Hi leistmacman,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like the Apple TV is giving an HDCP error. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • HDCP Error play SD movie on apple TV

I have just rented a movie off iTunes and have my settings on my ATV to download and play movies in SD as I do not have a HD TV. When I have tried to play it I get a HDCP error? When I rented the movie on the ATV the price said it was £3.49 which is the UK iTunes price for SD movie rentals. Anyone know why it won't play?

I play it via a VGA cable from the TV to a Kanex adaptor (http://store.apple.com/uk/product/H9139VC/A/kanex-atv-pro-airplay-mirroring-for- vga-projector-cable?afid=p228%7CGBUK&cid=AOS-UK-CSE-GoogleBase)
This adaptor has a HDMI converter on the end making it play on my non HDMI ready TV. I am just confused as to why when I had the SD resolution price on screen it didn't download the SD version. It plays other non HD video fine but I have not rented from iTunes before. Thanks

  • Apple tv 2 and HDCP error.

I just replaced my apple tv with a apple tv 2. I have a Sony Bravia KDL-V32XBR1 and I'm getting the HDCP error. I'm using a RocketFish HDMI cable so I'm pretty sure that it supports HDCP.
I can play Youtube, but no netflix and no rental or purchased. I cant do Youtube or any other streamed video from my iPad without getting the HDCP
    error message.
    Any ideas how to fix?
    thanks
    b

This is happening to me too- this is a replacement apple tv because I kept getting the green screen of death! I called for support, because I have iPods, iPhone, MacBook pro and air book in my household and the support people would not address any problems with Apple TV-
I got the impression they felt the product was worthless-
It is just at the one year warranty and I am fed up! NO MORE APPLE TV when there are so many products that offer service.
I have tried changing video output, tv specs, and my gold rocket fish are the best cables around! I think it is apple's new update that took six hours to load a few days ago- Pure garbage! Not even fit for eBay!
Rediculous!  Sure will make me think twice about buying apple again!
    NO STEP by STEP SOLUTIONS-
    Apple has become CORPORATOCRACY PERSONIFIED-
Take our money and then absolutely no service.

  • Updated my Apple TV- Now dreaded HDCP error

Very disappointed right now...updated the software tonight to my Apple TV (its was working just fine for the past year) and now I get the HDCP error.  Now I can;t watch the MLB game, movies....what is wrong?  How do I fix it?...this is one of the reasons people don't cut the cable bill or satellite bill....my HDMI cord was working perfectly, then update says your HDMI cord needs to be updated...this is AWFUL. just AWFUL!!

  • I have had my apple tv 2 for about 3 months which work perfectly fine when I use it with my iPad 3 ー all of the sudden I get the HDCP Error!  I read the forms and done everything!  Apple I name a loyal customer, please come out with an update soon!

I have had my apple tv 2 for about 3 months which work perfectly fine when I use it with my iPad 3 ー all of the sudden I get the HDCP Error!  I read the forms and done everything!  Apple I name a loyal customer, please come out with an update soon!

That's one of the weird things.. it recognizes it maybe 10% of the time. And usually, only after I do the two-button reset. Problem is.. since it won't charge above 2%, anytime I try to do a restore or anything like that using iTunes, my device shuts off and I lose whatever progress I'd made.
So, an update... after reading through a bunch of similar complaints (there are literally 1000's of them so there's NO WAY this isn't somehow ios7 related, thanks a lot APPLE ) I decided to try a restore in recovery mode. After 3 hours and several disconnections... I ended up having to just set it up as a new iPad, as the restore did nothing. Weirdly though... as I was doing the restore in recovery mode.. I noticed I'd gotten up to a 10% charge.. higher than it's been since September, so after setting it up as a new device, I turned it off and plugged it in using the wall charger. 2 hours later and I was up to 38%. Still not great, as my iPad, before ios7 could've fully charged twice in the amount of time it took for me to now get 28% more of a charge. And that's with a fully cleaned out device.. so that really ***** and I'm now more confused than ever.
But I'm gonna leave it overnight charging and see what I come up with tomorrow. Sadly, when I paid $600 for it in February, I never expected to have to play "wait and see" with it...

  • Apple tv hdcp error

Why do I get an HDCP error all the time?

Made a video about my hdcp error solution.

  • Hdcp error on i Mac?

I suddenly get a message of hdcp error when trying to watch films. There used to be no problem watching these films previously. What is the issue?

I also started getting this error this week.  I have a 27" iMac that's my home media server, and stream movies to my Apple TV, another iMac in the Kitchen, and to my iPad when exercising.
I was attempting to watch a new movie purchase a couple of days ago, and the Apple TV just gave me the spinning circle, but never started the movie.  So, I went to my Office 27" iMac to see what was wrong, and discovered I couldn't play it there, either on my external 27" Thunderbolt display, or on the built-in 27" display.  iTunes was giving me the HDCP error box on a gray space in the iTunes window.
I resolved the issue that evening by rebooting the Apple TV, which then allowed the movie to stream fine from the 27" Office iMac.  After watching the movie, later that evening I tried it again on the 27" iMac, and the movie was playing fine, without the HDCP error message.  Odd, but it was working.
I downloaded another movie last night, and tried to play it on the 27" Office iMac immediately, and again got the HDCP error.  This time I resolved it by going to the Kitchen 21" iMac and streaming the movie to there.  It played fine in the Kitchen, and after that test, it played fine again on the 27" Office iMac source computer.  Again, odd, but it's working again.
I contacted AppleCare while I was testing things this morning, and they suggested the Disk Utility/Repair Disk option, which I ran.  It didn't find any errors, but it's a painless thing to try, and with the SSD it went really fast.
I'm running the latest build of Yosemite (10.10.2/build 14C109) on my Macs, and iTunes 12.1.0.50 on my Macs.  I also ran the 10.10.2 Combo update this morning, just in case it's a corrupted driver issue.  I've found in the past that incremental/delta updates can lead to a build-up of damaged/corrupted files over time, so running the combo replaces everything that doesn't match the latest build.  Hopefully, today's combo update and permissions repair will resolve this issue for me for now.

  • HDCP Error Message

I have had my Apple TV about 90 days now and have had no problem in playing movies rented from Apple.  Now when I try to watch one, it starts an plays for about 10 or 15 seconds, then freezes.  I try to play it again, and I get an HDCP error message saying that I am either not using an HDMI cable or it is not properly connected to an HDTV.  Neither is true.  And nothing has changed with my setup.  I tried restoring and resetting to the original factory settings, and one time it did fix this, but now it does not.  What should I do?

I have an LED TV that is less than 6 months old (and my ATV is using the HDMI cable that freakin' came with it!) and I have been watching movies on it just fine until a recent up date and then have had the same HDCP problem that everyone else is posting about. Here is the only way I found to resolve it (besides the not helpful suggestion of "buy a new TV" ):
    On Apple tv go to:
    Settings
    General
    Reset
Reset all Settings (make sure you don't click Restore as it automatically updates the latest firmware).
You will have to go in and re-enter all your user info after doing this, but it fixed my HDCP error message problem and all my purchased movies are now playing like they should. Apple fail on this one as a lot of people seem to be having this problem and Apple should have at the very least warned everyone that this might occur.

  • HT4428 Fabricated HDCP error??

Why am I suddenly receiving an HDCP error after owning this product for nearly 3 years? I've had the same tv and HDMI for the last year with no problems. The "sleep" fix isn't fixing it. Please solve this issue so things "just work" again as you advertise. I have an angry toddler who can't watch her favorite movies because we only own them on iTunes.
Also, it seems odd that every time a new product is on the horizon, the old one has issues.

Please read all the troubleshooting steps in the article from which this thread was created and try them.
FYI, you are not addressing Apple here, we are all users like yourself.

  • HDCP Error AppleTV Can't watch Netflix

I need to know where is Apple showing a solution about the HDCP error in AppleTV's arround the world.
People are paying to get services like Netflix and this error besides being ridiculous, frankly is a huge frustration for users of Apple that certainly want THE BEST in these products (which are NOT cheap either).
I've changed my cable, followed all step of these discussions suggest and nothing. This error is still there and NO ONE IN APPLE OFFERS some kind of solution.
Please respond or something like that. People needs a solution soon.
"This content requires HDCP for playback. HDCP isn't supported by your HDMI connection."

Best to give them feedback directly

  • HDCP error death

I started getting the HDCP error recently and have been unable to watch any trailers and the film i rented. After calling Apple support they suggested that my Tv is not HDCP compliant. (Polaroid FLU-2632)
it is a new ATV purchased in June 2012 with a new high speed HDMI cable.
OK, so it would be good to have some forewarning that i may not be able to use the services provided when purchasing?
However, i now get the error message when trying to stream youtube and my own home movies over airplay. I certainly have not copyright protected my own fims.
Apple support is not available on a sunday, but am not sure that they know any more than i do?
Has anyone had the problem with airplay and any luck?
    thanks

Have you checked with your manufacturer if the TV supports HDMI.
The requirements are stated reasonably clearly.
Try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds, or resetting it using the reset option under general.
Check that the HDMI cable is correctly seated at both ends.
Try disconnecting the cable and connecting it again.
    Try another HDMI cable.
Try the Apple TV with another TV

  • HDCP error with Hulu and Netflix

I've had a Apple TV 2 for a few years now and it has worked great.. Two days ago it stopped playing Hulu and Netflix and Vimeo.. All worked fine up until then.. It continues to give me a HDCP error when I try to use them.. It will try to load the program then after 4secs I get the error..  I have changed nothing on my set up.. I have reset and restored, unplugged the HDMI cable and power cable as well.. No luck.. The only thing it will play is content I purchase or have purchased from Apple.. Is anyone else having this issues.. Any help would be appreciated!!

I would try testing with another tv to verify the problem is with the tv and not with the atv

  • ITunes HDCP error on a FULLY COMPLIANT SYSTEM

OK, I've just about had enough of this DRM nonsense.
Everyone who pays has to run around for hours trying to find a way to play the stuff they paid for while those who don't pay just sit down and watch! Great way to do business. Great way to encourage people to actually pay for stuff! Well done!
When will the top studio heads realize it's just making us all LOSE more money than we gain!
My system is 100% HDCP compliant.
I can confirm in the Nvidia control panel that both my graphics card and display are compliant and currently running HDCP fine.
But all of a sudden, last night iTunes refuses to play any of my few iTunes movie downloads (of which thankfully there are few, Blu-ray is so much better and the protection is easy to get around so you can play them back properly as you wish, but for a few titles I grew tired of waiting for the studios to get around to releasing them in a proper HD format, Blu-ray, so I finally caved in and tried a few digital downloads and for the other case I got one as promo (along with the Blu-ray).)
I tried re-booting and re-installing iTunes a few times and once it played for about 10 seconds before quitting and putting up the fake HDCP error message.
I can play back Blu-ray stuff just fine even if I turn off AnyDVDHD. So between that and the control panel saying HDCP is running fine, it's obviously running fine.
So I don't know what extreme levels iTunes is suddenly decided to use to verify HDCP, since everything else runs HDCP protected content just fine.
It's pretty ridiculous how many other complains like this I see around too. Can this really be good for business??
And it's pretty ridiculous that iTunes won't even let me watch a movie that I am in. Heck, I even partly funded a movie for which I'm now getting blocked by iTunes, now how is that for the height of irony! RIDICULOUS! Apple get your act together! This isn't good for your bottom line or anyone connected to the industries bottom line nor to any of the millions of loyal paying customers.

    I'm sorry, but I don't think that's the problem...
I have a Mac Pro with an Apple Cinema Display 23', and it worked fine, I could watch all movies, until I upgraded my video card for a new one. My MacPro came with an ATI video card, and I it stopped working. So I had to replace it for new one and I've choose a new nVidia gForce 285. Since then I can't watch any HD movie I downloaded from iTunes Store. In this case the problem is with the video card, that is not recognized as an HDCP device or something related. I'm trying to contact Apple to see what can be done with this problem and I suggest you guys to do the same. Some one must realize that some Apple computers will not have configurations 100% made by Apple.
    Best Regards
    -Bruno
