Apple TV 3 refuses to AirPlay video (mirroring & music is OK)

CONFIGURATION:
Brand new ATV 3
Brand new Airport Express, Apple-recommended config, config screens are here
     https://www.dropbox.com/sh/gqluxccdolmdx7y/AACmx4NVwZIVB8EobGu9ZYK1a
We use AirServer.app which emulates AirPlay on both MBP and MacPro. Airplay from all of our devices works correctly sending video/audio via Airplay to AirServer.
ATV SYMPTOMS:
Music plays on ATV via AirPlay, Mirroring is OK, but NOT video. Any video sent to ATV causes spinner on ATV screen until a long timeout (5 min?) when ATV switches back to eg. Network screen. Every device sends AirPlay video OK to AirServer emulator, but none send to ATV -> always just get the SPINNER.
TEST LOG:
** Airplay from MBP to ATV
-- recognizes ATV as Airplay device
-- iTunes music OK
-- iTunes video 2m30s -> SPINNER on ATV screen, then ATV switches back to Network settings
** Airplay from iPad Air to ATV
-- mirrors OK (so long as do NOT try to play video)
-- Videos.app
-- plays fine to Airserver.app on MBP, switch AirPlay to ATV then
-- iPad displays "This video is playing on Apple TV" --> SPINNER on ATV
-- Watchlater.app plays "Designed by Apple - By Intention" video in mirror mode
          -- turn off mirroring
-- iPad displays "This video is playing on Apple TV" --> SPINNER on ATV
-- MXTube.app - in mirroring mode - everything looks OK, until video playback started, then SPINNER on ATV screen (Note: Airplay icon has turned red in the app)
Advice would sure be appreciated!

I would aks this to the makers of airserver http://support.airserver.com

Hi there I'm having a problem with my apple tv I think im trying to AirPlay a video to the apple tv but when do it is ony playing the music and not the video content please help

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Websites and third party Apps need enabling before they will allow AirPlay of Video content. Some Website/App developers have not enabled their products, some simply haven't got around to it yet, others have stated that they won't be enabling AirPlay (likely as a result of licensing issues).

Any ideas? Have tried usual switching on and off again but no change

Here’s what you need to do to turn on AirPlay Mirroring on your iPad 2:
    – Have iOS 5 installed on your iPad 2
    – Make sure your Apple TV software is up-to-date. You can check for updates on the Apple TV by going to Settings > General > Update Software.
    – Have your TV turned with Apple TV active and showing.
    – Double-tap the home button on the iPad to bring up the Multitasking Bar.
    – Swipe to move to the left of the Multitasking Bar, so you can see the set of controls just to the left of the volume adjustment slider.
    – The button just to the right of the Fast Forward button – the one that has a rectangle with a solid, upward-facing arrow in it – is the AirPlay button. Tap to switch from iPad to Apple TV.
    – Once you do that you’ll see the Mirroring section appear just below the entry for Apple TV. Just tap to turn that On, and the iPad 2 will immediately begin mirroring to your TV screen.

  • Is there a cure against apple tv3 being unable to open videos or music from itunes library?

    HI!
I recently bought an apple tv and was trying to playback video and audio files on it.
activation of homesharing has been rather smooth (although i did have to open and close itunes several time). apple tv3 is able to download the library and lets me surf it.
my problems start when i attempt to open more than one video/song (one after another of course). It shows this circle which indicates download but does nothing. i'm able to exit from this screen but any attempt to open any file afterwards brings me the same result - running circle/star with no playback.
i read support info on the apple page and have followed more or less all recommendations, starting with allowing tcp/udp ports, making sure taht itunes is not on firewall, disabling power management on my  wireless adapter, etc.
the most exciting thing is that i have the same problem if i run remote app on my iphone and/or ipad - it stops seeing itunes after a while. at the same time if i pair my ipad/iphone with itunes manually (using 4 digit password) it works smoothly.
tech specs: latest itunes running on win 7, latest software running ipad/iphone/appletv. connection over wifi.
i assume there must be a bug in the way itunes communicates with devices in the apple ID related homesharing. otherwise i can't explain why remote app works smoothly with itunes library in password pairing mode.
Has anyone faced anything similar and found a cure against the problem?
I hear different opinions re firewall, antivirus software (i use kaspersky). i'm not  technical guy but assume if those pieces of the system allow to play one or two songs and then freeze, i don't think that the problem is in those pc.
WOudl be grateful for constructive feedback, hopefully with an easy solution:)
P.S> airplay from ipad, itunes, iphone works perfectly and without glitches.

Is this happening when playing from iCloud or locally from iTunes on your computer?  If it is from your computer is the computer going to sleep?  There is some bug in ATV that causes it to have problems being able to wake a computer that has gone into sleep mode.  Some times it works fine and then sometimes for like a week ATV will not be able to WAKE the iMac.  This can also be a problem if you are using an external hard drive and the hard drive is going into sleep mode. Also is iTunes running.  If iTunes is not on then ATV can not connect to get content.

It is stated that mirroring requires recent hardware (2011 or later)

However you can still use 3rd party solutions like Airparrot which do it via software

When I use AirPlay to mirror a video through my iPad there is a lag at times. Does anyone know how to improve this?

Since I updated my apple TV firmware the other day to 4.4.2 (3160) My video streamed from my iphone 4s loads inconsistently, and more troubling, much more slowly that with the previous version of the software.
Since I'm not technically, 'mirroring' as you are, on it's face, doesn't seem related. I'm just throwing this out since after looking for comments about radical changes in airplay after this update, I couldn't find much on this.
Did you install  this latest Apple TV update?  For me it's an  obvious difference. Previously I could start the airplay from my phone and not really have delays for loadiing or buffering. I don't have any other  'load' on my wifi or anything new that could be delaying the link from phone to airpay.
    Anyone?.....

  • Apple TV Airplay and Mirroring

I am unable to get any of my devices to work with my second or third generation Apple TV with airplay or mirroring. I have an IPAD 1 and 4, and also a laptop with ITunes that won't connect anymore since I moved.
    I have done the following:
I wasn't sure if my apple tv was broke, so I took it to the Apple retail store. He was able to mirror his IPAD and IPhone on my Apple TV, it turned out to be my remote, which now works with it.
All four devices have updated software.
All are on the same network.
All 4 devices are on the same Apple account, I only have one.
I've gotten pictures from the icloud to show up on screen.
On the IPad 4, I double clicked home and slid it to the right twice, no icon.
With my IPAD 1, I used to just play video and the airplay icon would come up, now nothing.
I've tried one suggestion, to change the language setting, nothing changed.
I have checked home sharing, everything is on.
I know I read about taking off the firewalls, but is that something that needs to be done with an IPad? I can see my lap top not working because of this, but IPads that have worked in the past.
I'm at a loss, any help would be appreciated.

You mentioned the issue started once you moved, it has something to do with how the network has been setup. Yes, things like firewall need to be looked at because something is blocking the connection.

having difficulty - via airplay --w/ streaming sites from ipad2 to g2 apple tv -- get audio but not video -- what gives???

What site are you trying to watch?  I just tested 3.  The you tube app streams from the pad to apple tv fine, as long as the source video format is ok.  Checked a site called funny or die.com. Most of the videosmthere stream to apple tv fine.  A few have a different format, and do audio only.  Netflix does not stream at all, but you can get to netflix directly from apple tv.  Whether or not it streams is directly related to the format of the video.  Some do, some dont.

  • Apple TV refuses to synch video's

I've recently come to having a problem when syncing my apple TV to my iTunes library. When I sync the apple tv in iTunes, a message circle appears next to the "Apple TV" category under the Devices listing. When I click on the "!", it reads "Some of the videos in your iTunes library including the video.... were not copied to the Apple TV because they cannot be played on this Apple TV"
Furthermore, it lists all the video's that weren't copied in a box below, and when the specific video is selected it says that the format is not supported by the Apple TV.
The reason I am confused is because all of the video's (music video's, tv shows, and movies) were purchased through the iTunes Store, and I would think that they're all mp4 or the compatible format for the Apple TV. Am I wrong to think this? There certainly is a lot of unused space still left on my Apple TV.
    Thanks!

The ATV should support all of your purchased files. You may want to try just streaming these files and see if they work that way. If they stream they should also sync. In my experience I have found no advantages to syncing video; I choose to only sync photos to provision the cool screensaver with my iPhoto library. ATV should never be regarded as a storage device. It's a one way street; iTunes to ATV. You cannot grab any synced files off the ATV and copy back to iTunes. I can accept a bit of wasted disk space. I could accept no disk space at all and stream everything. The ATV could morph into a device 50% smaller with a larger buffer an sell for half the price. It may be a solution to the modest sales numbers so far for a device that elegantly builds the PC to television virtual bridge.

  • AirPlay Screen Mirroring (Mavericks) disconnects frequently with "Feedback taking too long to send" message

My company has several TVs with AppleTVs (3rd generation units) connected in our conference rooms so we can "Screen Mirror" our Mac laptops via AirPlay during meetings. Many employees have complained that AirPlay Screen Mirroring drops frequently during meetings for no apparent reason.
In attempts to determine the cause of the issue, I removed the AppleTV units from Wi-Fi and hard-wired them all to the LAN (100Mbps/Full duplex, no switchport errors seen on the Cisco switch). I upgraded the AppleTVs to the latest firmware. I had our AppleTV users ensure they were running MacOS Mavericks with the latest software updates installed. I had the Mac laptops hard-wired into the LAN during meetings in the conference rooms. None of these changes resolved the AirPlay issue.
I reviewed the MacOS "/var/log/system.log" file from the laptops of several users that reported issues. I found a pattern that seemed to indicate that the "coreaudiod" process reported "Feedback taking too long to send" several times before the AppleTV connection was terminated. Also, from a network trace (using "tcpdump") taken during an unexpected AirPlay Screen Mirroring disconnection, I could see that the Mac laptop sent a TCP FIN packet to the AppleTV unit (this would indicate that the MacOS laptop initiated the closing of the AirPlay connection).
I have included the relevant log file entries below. Please note that the LAN internal to our company is "solid" and there have been no connectivity issues detected or reported during the times the AirPlay sessions were disconnected.
I believe I have found a workaround to this issue. By going into "System Preferences", "Sound" and then changing the "Output" device BACK to the "Internal Speakers" (rather than the AirPlay destination), the AirPlay Screen Monitoring connection seems to remain stable.
    My questions are:
    - is anyone else experiencing this type of problem? any other solutions recommended?
    - is there a way to change the AirPlay defaults so that Screen Mirroring only sends the video (not audio)?
    - does anyone know what the log file entries indicate (like, what does "Feedback taking too long to send...." mean)?
    - any fix planned for this issue?

I'm currently still experiencing this as well. I've confirmed it occurs on 10.9.1, 10.9.2, and 10.9.3 on MacBook Pro Retina's, Mid-2012 and 2013 MacBooks. It happens on multiple ATV's not just one, all are updated to 6.1.1 and a simple reboot seems to fix it temporarily but it does come back. All the ATV's are connecting to the network via Wireless not Ethernet. These are 3rd Gen ATV's but I checked the serial number and these do not match the bad batch of Apple TV's from 2013 that were offered up for Replacement for Apple due to the bad firmware update. None of the computers have the Firewall turned on. Here's the two logs that we always find after the issue occurs (logs are recent, happened this morning):
    5/30/14 8:57:36.017 AM coreaudiod[183]: 2014-05-30 08:57:36.016946 AM [AirPlay] ### Feedback taking too long to send (30 seconds, 17 total)
    5/30/14 8:57:36.332 AM coreaudiod[183]: 2014-05-30 08:57:36.331492 AM [AirPlay] ### Feedback failed: -6723/0xFFFFE5BD kCanceledErr
The user will get disconnected from Airplay anywhere between 30 seconds to 3 minutes after logging on and can reconnect but then once again get disconnected after the same time period. One interesting thing to note is that when the Feedback Taking Too Long to send error starts occuring and the countdown to disconnect start ticking down to 30, its solely referring to Audio not being sent over the network and Video is working just fine. If I try to play sound I get another log and the sound doesn't play through the speakers. After a reboot, sound works fine and the Feedback Error's do not show up. I've also tried switching to Internal Speakers (since it defaultly switches to Airplay Speakers) after connecting to Airplay and seeing the Feedback timer start in the Console Logs but even after that the log continues to saw its taking too long to send and disconnects in 30 seconds.
This issue has been ongoing for months, I've got a ticket logged as far back as January with this occuring but its infrequent enough that we've just restarted and moved on. I'd say its an issue that occurs to about 5%-10% of meetings but that's an entire meeting that doesn't have the ability to Airplay until someone comes down and reboots it.
I don't often post in this forum but its still an active issue with no resolution, proof that its occuring on other people's systems, and no firmware updates having been released to correct it. It'd be nice to know of any workarounds other than having to buy some lamp timers for each conference room just to get a functional ATV or putting up a sign that says hey if you get disconnected every 3 minutes, reboot the ATV. The whole reason we're using Apple products is for ease of use otherwise I'd put together a much cheaper solution myself. Any help or recommended troubleshooting steps would be fantastic at this point.

  • Video mirroring in Mavericks not working

    Hi folks,
I have an Apple TV and I just downloaded Mavericks; I'd like to video mirror onto my AppleTV.
When I open up my system preferences , I can click on my displays icon. When I click on the checkbox for the video mirroring to show up in the menu bar, I can check the box,  but nothing happens in the menu bar. Needless to say, I cannot video mirror on my AppleTV.
    What am I doing wrong?
