Apple TV 3rd generation vs Apple TV 2nd generation

How come my Apple TV 3rd generation has an icon for music, but my Apple TV 2nd generation does not?

The same here with AirPlay Mirroring.
I have an iPad 2 and a 300 MBit/s WiFi Router (and 2 other 150MBit/s WiFi Router).
It seems that the Apple TV 3G is buffering every 2 seconds or so, and from time to time it seems to buffer for the duration of 1/2 to 1 second!
That's simply ridiculous!
I'm using the ATV mainly for musik but from time to time I want to play too and that's a big disappointment.
Anyone having same problems with the ATV3?
(I know there is another trhead too, but this thread is for the ATV3 so I'm posting here as well)

Is it normal that Apple TV 1st generation cannot use AirTunes with Apple TV 2nd generation or Airport express 2nd generation? I want to play music synced in my ATV 1st gen. to a nymber of speakers in the house. In the list of speakers I can see Apple TV itself and my two Airport Expresses 1st generation but not my Apple TV 2nd generation or my Airport express 2nd generation. For the ATV 2nd gen. I found a solution: when I enable the Airplay setting of XBMC which is installed on my ATV 2nd generation, then AirTunes in ATV 1st gen. sees the speaker "XBMS (Apple-TV)". Itunes can in my Macbook pro can use Airplay with all my speakers, i.e. ATV 1st gen., ATV 2nd gen., Airport Express 1st gen., Airport Express 2nd gen.

Last time I checked ATV1 could not use Airtunes to send audio to an AppleTV 2 or 3 - highly annoying as you think they would have kept backwards compatibiility for audio, but it seems Airplay is more than a superset of Airtunes.

Will Apple someday make iOS5 available to the 2nd generation iPod Touch?

I know that iOS5 will only be available to 3rd and 4th generation iPod Touches. Is it possible that Apple can develop a slightly down-graded version that has some of the new features so that users with 1st and 2nd generations can enjoy them?

I believe the "slightly down-graded" version of iOS 5 would be iOS 3 or iOS 4.

Does Apple plan to discontinue support/update for 2nd Generation iPod touch as latest iOS release for it is 4.2.1?

I have 2nd Generation iPod touch and latest iOS release for it is 4.2.1. Most of the Apps on iTunes now require iOS 4.3 at minimum. Isn't it outrageous that Apple is not supporting such iOS update for older iPod? Is there plan to discontinue such support?

I have a 2nd generation iPod Touch too and I currently have 24 Apps that I cannot update. Unlike you however, I hold the App developers responsible for the fact that they (the App developers) are not supporting iOS 4.2.1.
It is the App devloper who decides to modify their App so that it then requires a particular version of the iOS. Since a developer can have a free and a paid version of an App, it begs the question why don't they have the older and newer versions.
I now check the requirements for an App before I click on update. If it still only requires iOS 4.2.1, then I can update. If it requires a higher iOS, the I simply don't update it. One good thing is that by now, most of the older Apps are quite stable and bug free, so the update is usually to give something extra. Since I cannot update the App, I simply forgo the "extras".

4th generation app on a 2nd generation ipod touch

I recently purchased the Pages app for my 2nd generation ipod touch thinking it would be fine because it has the 4.2.1 software version on it. Unfortunately I keep getting an error message that says I need a newer version, OS 4.2.8 or later. When I check for updates, it says that I have the latest version. What should I do?

How much discount will I get off my next apple purchase from an apple store if I return my old 2nd generation 8gb ipod (few scratches)?

I have heard that if you return an apple product to the store they will buy it back off you in return of a discounted price off your next apple purchase with the discount depending on the product. I am looking to upgrade my 2nd gen 8gb ipod for a new 5th gen 32gb ipod touch in blue.

Apple will only give you a 10% recycling discount if you turn in an old iPod when you purchase a new one. Better off selling it yourself.

Apple TV not working with Ipod Touch 2nd generation? No sound.

Has worked perfectly the past month and I can still stream youtube via the ipod touch with sound.
However I can no longer play music from ipod touch to Apple tv. Issue started about 10 days ago.
Could this be due to some updates?
Similar issue when trying to play from Spotify, used to work perfectly.

HT4367 Restore Apple TV 2nd generation - how?

I have tried all of what is advised (USB cable, no power cord, iTunes 10.6.3, 10.7, 10.01, on Mac and Windows, held menu+down button, etc) but AppleTV is not appearing in list of devices. Can not start restore.
White led is constantly blinking after software update (no I did not interrupt download).
All that is visible now on the TV when AppleTV is connected is the iTunes logo and usb cable.
What to do?
Clearly this software update is bad news and should be avoided.

If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
    1.    Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
    2.    Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
    3.    Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    4.    Open iTunes.
    5.    Select your Apple TV in the Source list, and then click Restore.
If when you choose restore you get a message that the device cannot be found, download the file below

Then hold down the option key while choosing restore and select the downloaded file when prompted.

The Time Capsule is clearly announced as a router with a hard drive to make backups, not to store anything and share it with your Apple TV.
To access to movies and music from the Time Capsule, note that the Apple TV can only access to them if they are stored in your iTunes library, so you will have to put your movies and music into iTunes to access to them, and then, put your iTunes library on the Time Capsule in order to access to your data from there

Airport Extreme 2nd generation on a roaming network: is it capable of doing this?

I am having difficulty setting up a roaming network using a 2nd generation Airport Extreme and Airport Express. Airport Utility doesn't "see" the Airport Express when it is connected to the Airport Extreme via CAT 5 cable. Apple support document for setting up a roaming network references applicability to Airport Extreme 3rd generation. Is a 2nd generation unit not capable of doing this?

Apps on 2nd generation iPod Touch crashing

The apps on my 2nd generation iPod Touch are increasingly slowing down and/or crashing. The local Apple store rep said a) apps updated for 4th generation iPods overtax my 2nd generation hardware and therefore b) I must buy a new iPod. Is anyone experiencing this problem? Does Apple really expect me to buy new hardware every time its software upgrades automatically render my hardware obsolete?

Did you already try to reset your ipod by holding your sleep and home button until the Apple logo comes back again? You will not lose data doing this, but it can cure some glitches.
Usually apps not meant for your iOS version can't be installed on your device. I tried this on my ipod, you can select the apps for a higher iOS, but they won't install.
If resetting does not help, set it up "as new device" without using the latest backup, in case you would be reinstalling damaged files. How to set up your iPhone or iPod touch as a new device

How to run games on ipod nano 2nd generation with firmware 1.1.1

Does anyone know if you can run games on the 2nd generation ipod nano with the latest firmware of 1.1.1 when the itunes store with games wants the system to have firmware 1.2.
This means that the games must only work on 1st generation ipods or that 2nd generation ipod nanos do not need this level of firmware.
Games are not loading on my ipod.
Any advice?

Nope, sorry but games are currently only supported on the 5th Generation (video) iPods. Also the 1.2 firmware is only for the 5th Generation iPods.

If you have home sharing turned on in the settings of your apple tv and your iPad you can AirPlay from your iPad to the apple tv. When you play a video there is a tv icon on the right side of the play/pause/fwd/rwd icons. Click that and choose your apple tv. Your apple tv and iPad must be on the same network.
