Apple TV 5.0.1 update - Screen Saver kicks in while watching Netflix content.

Howdy all,
I just updated my Apple TV (2nd generation) to 5.0.1, and after the update, I went to Netflix to watch a TV show. It started and played just fine, but after a few minutes, the video disappeared and the screensaver kicked in, while the audio from the show continued to play. Of course, I can tap one of the directional buttons on the remote to get the picture back, but I figured this might be an overlooked bug from the update.
Is anyone else experiencing anything similar?

I got almost the same problem.
I'm streaming video from an IPhone 4S using AirPlay to my AppleTV3 with SW 5.1(5201).  After a few minutes the screen saver kicks in but the audio from the video is still playing. By pressing the directional buttons on the Apple remote the screen saver disappear and the video is back.
This is an annoying bug that's been around for a few years.

  • Can I stop a screen saver kicking in while listening to iTunes 11?

    Hi,
Since updating to iTunes 11 my screen saver kicks in after a period of time (default setting). This is so annoying because before I updated, I used to have iTunes 10 running in full screen cover flow mode and this temporarily disabled my screen saver from starting while it was running in this mode.
Is there any way I can run iTunes 11 in the same way without having to mess around with my screen saver settings?
Why Apple decided to remove the cover flow feature in iTunes 11 is beyond comprehension and hope they reinstate it again soon.
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give.

Same here. It's just started doing this during NetFlix.
    Turned screen saver off now...

  • Movie disappears after screen saver kicks in

If my screen saver (it doesn't matter which one) kicks in while watching a movie, after I press a key to stop the screen saver, Quicktime still plays the movie but there's nothing on the screen, all I see is my background. I can hear the sound, but no picture. Anyone have a fix for this problem besides turning off the screen saving while watching movies?

If I play a movie with VLC or QT the display will NOT go to sleep...
Are you sure about that?  Because that's not what happens on my machine forcing me to run a little utility (Jiggler) to keep my machine awake (to avoid having to change the energy saver prefs each time).
FWIW, there are alternatives to Jiggler (Caffeine and InsomniaX are two others).  Perhaps you might consider one of these when using Front Row.
Note, it is possible my specific problem has to do with using multiple displays, where one of those displays is my TV when using vlc.

  • Is it possible to change the display order of Apple TV applications on my home screen?  i.e. move Watch ESPN toward the top, move the WSJ to the bottom, etc.

Is it possible to change the display order of Apple TV applications on my home screen?  i.e. move Watch ESPN toward the top, move the WSJ to the bottom, etc.  That way you won't have to scroll all the way down to the bottom to access an applicaton you use most often.

Yes. Just select and hold until the app starts to jiggle and then you can move it.

  • My screen stays in landscape mode watching Netflix and won't switch to portrait like all other video sites (Amazon Prime) does. Any way to fix?

My screen stays in Landscape mode watching Netflix and won't switch to Portrait like other video sites like Amazon Prime does.  It is not locked so I don't know why this happening.  Any help is appreciated.

I can't swear to this because I do not have the Netflix app, but I believe that the most recent upgrade to the app requires you to watch the movies in landscape mode now and it cannot be changed.

  • ATV 2.4 update screen saver issue?

I've been with Apple TV since the first month it appeared on earth and have been very happy about it. Right now I own three of them. The feature I always use is to listen to the streaming music and watch all my photo floating on the screen. Since this recent 2.4 update, I think there's a bug involving this. If I turn on the ATV and use it right away, screen saver would turn my TV blank, not a slide show. Anyone got this issue? It's already on my two out of three ATV. And, without opening ATV and remove the HDD, is there any way to step beack to 2.31?
    Thanks
    WK

Like many others, I'm also having problems with the screen saver after the 2.4 update. Normally I use the "slideshow" screensaver option with music playing. Since the 2.4 update, this screensaver option works for maybe 2-3 minutes, then it begins cycling through pictures quickly and the ATV becomes completely unresponsive and requires reboot. Not good. The other screensaver option, the one with the cascading pictures, doesn't work well either (lots of blank screen with occasional bouts of pictures).
I have to say, I'm very disappointed with this update ... doesn't Apple test this stuff? It's a pretty basic function of the device, and I can't believe it's not well tested before the software is released.
If anyone figures out a workaround, other than turning off the screensaver, I'd love to hear it.

  • Mac OS 10.5.6 - Screen saver takes over while playing DVD.

Since I installed 10.5.6, when I am playing a DVD using the DVD Player, the screen saver takes over the display and I have to disable it in order to continue to see the DVD video. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I have just been disabling the screen saver by setting it to never. Kind of a pain.

    Hi Raingirl;
If you go to System Preferences > Desktop & Screensaver and set it to never, it will turn off the Screensaver forever. If you want the Screensaver back again later you must reset it again. I know this is a royal pain in the your-know-what but it is the best suggestion I have for now.
I did sent my thoughts on this to Apple via www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.htm
You to might try this. If enough of express our displeasure maybe they might see our point of view and change things so that the screensaver doesn't interrupt programs that don't require input.

  • Screen saver starts up while Safari is streaming

That's it really . . I'll be watching NetFlix or any other streaming video, and the screen saver starts up right on time as if I'd been completely inactive.
What am I missing here ?

    Hi,
Open System Preferences / Desktop & Screen Saver then select the Screen Saver tab.
Where you see: Start screen saver
Adjust the slider so the screen saver doesn't activate so soon.
If that doesn't help, open a Finder window. Select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left now open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
Move the com.apple.screensaver.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
Restart your Mac. See if that makes a difference.

  • MBP 15 non-retina 2012--Screen saver turning on while typing

    New 2012 MacBook Pro 15 (non-retina)
While typing or doing other items the screen saver turns on briefly and then fades away.   Have reset PRAM and SMC, deleted screen saver pref. file in the library.  I have not transferd my old accounts.  Have updated all software.  Any thoughts.  BTW-- This is the second MBP '12 I have gotten.  The first crashed and died 6 hours after turning it on.  The screen went blank and 3 beeps were the only sign that it onced worked.
    Thanks

Hmmm, today, my new non-retina MBP was behaving wierdly out in the garage, screen cycling between full brightness to very dark with a cycle of mabye 5 seconds.  Hasn't happened in the house, so I feel it is either a brightness or heat sensor issue.

  • Screen saver kicks in

After upgrading to 10.5.2, my screensaver kicks in after a few minutes of computer non-use. In System Prefs, I have deactivated all settings:
    Start Screen saver: "Never"
Hot Corners: all "Disable Screen Saver"
Repairing permissions and restarting doesn't help. I have never been one to use screen savers and I hope there's a simple way to completely stop this... Does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks.

I too have the same issue. Screen Saver will not disable. Has anyone else had this problem?

  • Iphone screen keeps timing out while watching videos

HHow do I keep my iPhones screen from timing out when watching videos. I never had this problem until recently

try check your video player's settings. if that dosen't help, the worst thing you could do is to change auto-lock to "never" in phone's settings -> general.

  • While watching Netflix on my Apple TV

While watching Netflix the movie stalls for a few seconds, sometimes for well over a minute, and restarts on its own.

    Hi,
I get the occasional video that does this, for e.g. an episode of That 70's Show did this every minute or so.
I stopped watching and chose the next episode and it work just fine.
I assume this was an issue at the netflix end...
