Apple TV access to iTunes

Hi,
If I install an Apple TV next to an HDTV, will it need to communicate with any Mac so it can retrieve iTunes videos from the Mac, or will the Apple TV have the ability to access my iTunes account, retrieve the video and play it without any communication with a Mac?

To be able to stream content from your iTunes library, it will need a local network connection, to which the computer running the library is also connected. The computer will need to be on and have iTunes running in order to share its library.

If two people have separate libraries on the same computer, it is best to put them into two separate Windows User accounts.
Go to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Add User Accounts, and get her set up in a separate user account. Then move all her stuff there and from then on the two of you can operate independently on the same computer.

Can Apple TV access am iTunes server on a NAS (Qnap)?

My 160GB Apple TV is nearly full now, so to have more content available I am faced with having to leave my PC on all the time and stream from there, rather than storing everything locally on the ATV.
This is not ideal for me. At the same time, I have been considering buying a NAS for general data backup and other purposes. If I get a Qnap NAS with iTunes server installed, can the AppleTV stream from there in the same way as it does with my PC at the moment?

The majority of iTunes servers out there are not compatible with AppleTV - other iTunes libraries may see the NAS server, but AppleTV requires registering a sync/stream library with the iTunes instance with a 5 digit code - if the server can handle this it may work but most will have no way of performing the registartion process.
AppleTV may be available as an Airport speaker to any iTunes instance, but it does not just 'see' shared iTunes NAS libraries as an iTunes instance would.
If the device is actually running iTunes and you can interact you may be able to pair but in genera the answer would be no.
If you can confirm you definitely had it working for sync/streaming then other users would probably love to hear more details.

Also, when I tried to change iMessage I got a message that if I deleted my id (which seemed to be the only way to get my husband's I'd there), I would not be able to receive iMessages on any device.

I would just follow the instructions from this article to give your unused 4s to your spouse. Since you have already started using your 5s, you will still be receiving iMessages on that phone and will have no need to receive them on a device that has been replaced. Are you using the charger and cable that came with the phone?

Happy to help you :) go to seeing and than general or settings than iTunes store it's for sure in settings but you may want to set it up on your computer in which case it's (windows) edit > preferences (Mac) iTunes preferences

You can use one account with iTunes on your Mac, and different account(s) with the Mac App Store (for buying/downloads apps or OS updates for your Mac), iCloud (System Preferences > iCloud) and Messages (Messages > Preferences, or command-comma)

Not unless the iTunes library is on your parent's local network.
If it is, then configure iTunes and AppleTV to use the same Home Sharing Credentials, and set up Photos to Share under the iTunes Advanced tab.
