Apple TV--accessing desktop MacPro on network

Hello all,
I just recently purchased Apple TV and just finished hooking it up. Seems like so far it works great, and I can access any of my itunes library that is on my MacBook Pro...however is there a way to access my itunes library that is on my MacPro? My MacPro is on the network with a direct wired connection. Maybe you can only stream wirelessly, which would make it so that my main library that is on my MacPro would not be accessible. Is there a way?
Thanks,
Norm

So long as the wireless/wired devices are on the same network it does not matter.
I have a mixture of wired/wireless computers, iPhone/iPad on wireless and wired/wireless AppleTVs.
Assuming the wireless services are provided by the same router handling the wired connections they should just see each other.
Home Sharing needs to be enabled on each itunes account and each AppleTV 2.
Different computers appear separately under the Computers tab.
Having a desktop to serve media can be more practical than a laptop, as you usually have more permanently attached internal/external storage without having to plug/unplug external drives if a laptop starts to fill with media, and also the system is usable when the laptop is out of the house.
Using Home Sharing you could quite easily copy content from one itunes library to the other to replicate the laptop contents on the Mac Pro. It's quicker to copy files manually using an external drive and just add them to itunes but Home Sharing is quite convenient.

  • How can I only allow my Apple TVs access to my LAN?

In my set-up, I have three Apple TVs in separate rooms all connected to a LAN via their ethernet ports. They are connected via a switch to my Airport Extreme and my Mac Mini is also connected to Airport as an iTunes server. The Airport runs a WiFi network for internet access but I don't want people to be able to plug their computers into my LAN and have access to the whole set-up.
What can I do to achieve this?
I don't want the Apple TV's to rely on the WiFi so I can use MAC Address Filtering, since it is patchy and streaming HD videos is more stable via ethernet. I have looked into setting-up an 802.1x network but when investigating the Configurator app to set-up the Apple TVs to access an 802.1x network it refers only to WiFi set-ups again. Also, I don't know much about RAIDUS servers and authentication, such as whether I'd need any additional hardware etc.
Any help would be gratefully received.

...any app launched from /Applications holds only the permissions of the user launching the app, regardless of the owner (presumably because anyone, including "root" can install applications into /Applications).
It has nothing to do with where the application is installed. Any executable runs with the permissions of the user who runs it. The only exception is a binary executable with the SUID or SGID bit set, and then only if it's on the root device, and only if it's not an Aqua application. The SG/UID bits are ignored otherwise.
So, anyone who has installed Wireshark from the "native .dmg" by drag-and-dropping won't be able to use the suid trick because the OS will ignore the suid permissions.
Sorry, I don't understand this at all. Wireshark invokes dumpcap as a child process to capture packets. If dumpcap is installed anywhere on the root device as SUID root, then it will run as root regardless of who invokes it.
The suid method will only work for Macports and Fink installations...
That's not correct. There are many SUID or SGID executables in a default installation of the Mac OS, and none of them comes from MacPorts or Fink.

  • New Ipod Touch 5g can't access Internet in home network (using Linksys E4200 router). But, OK with other Wifi.

Just bought new Ipod Touch 5g. I found out it can't access Internet in home network. not really cannot access, but very slow to open any web page, App Store failed to access, etc. But, OK with other Wifi (office & starbucks). Others existing iOS devices (Iphone4 & Ipad2) have no problem like this. I'm using Linksys E4200 router at home. anyone has any idea why?

    Try:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>GeneralReset>Reset Network Settings

    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.

Apple TV 2 is asking for network time before I can purchase a movie? Even restarted it and still did the same thing.
How do you fix this? My wifi is operating 100% connected and I can access the Itunes Movies etc. How do I get it to work again?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If you've had it working previously, try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for a 30 seconds, or a restore if the problem persists.

  • Accessing other computers in network

Sorry if this is a repeat - just got my mac & have 2 other windows desktops on my network... I have enabled some of those folders on the PCs (pics, MP3s) to be shared on the network... yet I can't seem to see those shared files when I look from my mac.
There must be a way i can access those shared folders/files from the mac, and probably vice versa. Please point me in the right direction to figure this out!
    Thanks.

  • Beachball When I Access Desktop and Screensaver Preferences

This is strange. When I try to access Desktop and Screensaver Preferences in System Preferences, I get a beachball after a few seconds. The D and S Pref window shows up at first but there is nothing showing for either the current desktop or the current screensaver, and clicking on anything hastens the appearance of the beachball. I then have to force quit System Preferences.
All other items in System Preferences seem to be working OK. The only other oddity I have noticed is that downloaded files do not appear directly on top of my Macintosh HD icon on my Desktop (like they always had), but they appear on the Desktop in another nearby location.
I have logged out and in, restarted, repaired permissions, verified disk and even reinstalled the Combo 10.4.11 updater. I have also trashed com.apple.desktop. plist, all without success.
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Steve M.

Thanks for responding baltwo. After puzzling over my problem, I finally arrived at the idea that somehow the screensaver I was using had developed a problem. So I pulled my WorldBook 2003 screensaver to the Desktop and logged out and back in and lo and behold my Screensaver Preferences worked as normal!
Since my WorldBook installation is not very current, I suppose there may be conflicts of some sort with 10.4.11 (of course I don't know for sure when this problem started).
I guess I could put the WorldBook screensaver back in place and try deleting the prefs you suggested and see what happens. I'm a little leery of deleting systempreferences prefs for fear of losing a bunch of my settings. Since I don't really need the WB screensaver I may just leave it out permanently.
By the way, what exactly is meant by the ByHost preferences?
    Thanks,
    Steve M.

Whilst I can access the web interface, somehow I cannot access Desktop Intelligence.  When I logon I get the following error message:

You need to be able to connect to the CMS port. If this is not working even via telnet then there must be a firewall rule somewhere preventing it. Unless traffic is allowed to pass to the CMS on it's configured port (6400 by default) then any further troubleshooting is unnecessarry.

  • Apple TV is killing my wireless network

I think my Apple TV is shutting down my wireless network. I've owned the Apple TV since April but the problems just began 3 days ago. When the Apple TV is connected to the network, the entire wireless network and internet connection is lost for all clients until I reset the router by unplugging the power supply. This happens every 30 minutes or so. When I unplug the Apple TV, the problems stop and the network is fine.
I own the Linksys WRT54G version 6 router. Firmware v1.02.2 is installed. I have 2 computers and one AppleTV. Computer one is a Dell laptop that is almost never turned on, the other is a Mac G4 Desktop that is connected to the router with a Cat5 cable, not wireless, and it runs 24/7. I have the G4 set to use DHCP to autoconfigure and the router is set up to allow 3 connections. There is no MAC filtering. DHCP server is enabled. SSID is broadcast. I'm using WPA security. The DHCP lease time is one day.
Has anyone else experienced these problems with an Apple TV??? -thanks

If setting your DHCP server to 50 users did not help, then I would suggest you try setting your Apple TV to a fixed LAN IP address, and see if that helps.  The reason for this suggestion is that some Apple products have had problems using DHCP assigned addresses from Linksys routers.
Linksys has some special rules for assigning fixed LAN IP addresses:
With Linksys routers, a fixed (static) LAN IP addresses must be assigned in the device that is using the address. So you need to enter the fixed address in the Apple TV, not in the router.
When using a Linksys router, any fixed LAN IP address must be outside the DHCP server range (typically 192.168.1.100 thru 192.168.1.149), and it cannot end in 0, 1, or 255.
Therefore any fixed LAN IP address would normally need to be in the range of
    192.168.1.2 thru 192.168.1.99 or
    192.168.1.150 thru 192.168.1.254
assuming you are still using the default DHCP server range.
Also, in the computer, when you set up a static LAN IP address, you would need to set the "Subnet mask" to 255.255.255.0 and the "Default Gateway" to 192.168.1.1  and the "DNS Server" to 192.168.1.1
It is also important that no two devices on your network be set to the same static LAN IP address.
If the problem does not resolve with a fixed LAN IP address as described above, then in place of the "DNS server" address of 192.168.1.1  substitute the actual Internet DNS server addresses, as listed in the router on the "Status" tab, "Router" subtab.
    Hope this helps.
Since this is a relatively new problem, please let us know if this works or not.

  • Disable apple tv from connecting to other networks?

is there a way to disable apple tv from connecting to other networks? I try to limit the use of apple tv on the network that it is connected to, however, there are other networks in range that are not secure and can be used instead. is there a way to ''lock'' apple tv to only one selected network?

The main problem is that for protected content in iTunes AppleTV sometimes needs to get a playback authorisation across the internet.
I've never quite figured what triggers this but it's often when content is new and hasn't been played on the computer before.
I took AppleTV, iPad and MacMini on holiday where I had no internet access and created a LAN without internet.
It was impossible to Airplay protected content from the iPad but 90% of the protected content in itunes on teh Mac Mini would stream and play - some new kids shows I purchased and had not played before would not stream.
Don't suppose you can connect the computer direct to AppleTV via ethernet and see if that lets you stream and play without internet connectivity?
Alternatively can you seletively turn off your router at times to avoid AppleTv connecting - that usually makes it only display Computers (iTunes streaming locally) and Settings as teh other icons are generated dynamically depending on availability tested via Apple's servers.

  • IPad 4 asks for User Name and Password to access home wi-fi network

I have the iPad 4, which occasionally fails to connect to my home network and will ask me for both an User Name and Password to access my home wireless network. I have no idea what would constitute an User Name and I have tried the name of the network and other options to no avail. When I close down the iPad and take it closer to my Wi-Fi Router (BT Home Hub 3) then switch back on it asks for the password only as normal and all is well. What concerns me is this only happens on the occasional basis, but I am trying to access the router from exactly the same place.
Is there a fault with the wireless function on the iPad? I have contacted Apple Support by telephone and they were very helpful to be fair, but they had not come across this issue before.
Has anyone experienced anything like this and could advise me? My other option would be to email Apple Support, but I cannot find an email address for Apple Technical Support UK.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Cannot access my own secure network with G4 iBook

I set up a WPA secure network with a AirPort Extreme Base Station. No problem using it with my G4 iMac. However, when I try to access it with a second computer, a G4 iBook laptop, using the same WPA password I use to access it with my iMac, I get an error message.
Using the Setup Assistant with the iBook gives me an "invalid password" message. I know it is the correct password. I set it up and I use it with the iMac!
When the network is unsecured (no password needed) the iBook can access it, no problem.
Please tell me what I need to do to be able to access my own secure network with my iBook. TIA!

The only thing I can think of is the firmware for the AirPort card in the iBook, which is version 9.52. I could not find anywhere in Apple's website how to upgrade this. Does anybody know how to upgrade this firmware?
If there is any firmware update to the card it is done automagically whenever the corresponding AirPort software update is applied. There is no user notification and no way for the user to make updates diretly.

  • Apple TV = Access Point??

I need to update my existing router (non apple product) to which I've already ordered Apple Extreme Base Station. I have a Direct TV receiver that needs to connect to my network. Right now, it's connected to a non apple access point, but the access point drops the network connectivity quite a bit. I'm not sure if it's the AP itself, the router, both, or the distance between the router (2nd fl) and the AP (1st floor). I  have apple TV, but it isn't integrated into my network.
Can use the apple TV as an AP and keep it's regular capibilities (iTunes, Netflix, You Tube, etc)?
I'm hoping the apple TV and the AEBS stay connected better than what my existing network equipment does.

send your suggestions to Apple via _*Apple TV Feedback*_.

  • How do I use Airport Extreme to create wired access point on wireless network?

Bit of an odd situation. I just went from cable to DSL at home and the modem moved from right by my computer to upstairs.
Trouble is, there's no real easy way to get a cable from the modem upstairs to my X-box (sans wireless connector) downstairs.
I could buy the wireless adaptor for the X-Box, but I was hoping I wouldn't have to spend any more money.
I have my airport extreme, and I was hoping I could use it to create a wired access point on the network, recieving the signal from the wireless modem upstairs and allowing me to plug in the X-Box.
Is this possible? If so, how? I've been through the config panel about a dozen times, but can't figure out what combination to set up.
    Thanks.

Will it work if I use the express to create the network?
Yes, providing that you have an 802.11n version of the AirPort Express and the Express has been configured to "Allow this network to be extended".
Then, the AirPort Extreme can be configured to "extend" the Express network. When you do this, the AirPort Extreme will provide more wireless coverage and the LAN Ethernet ports are enabled, so you can connect an Ethernet device.
This will not be a "normal" Ethernet connection. It will only work as well as the wireless "hop" between the Express and Extreme allow.
For best results and performance, a wired connection through the hole in the wall is always best. If you decide to do this, you will need the "new" AirPort Express with both a WAN and LAN port on the device. But, you could try wireless first to see if it will meet your goals before you reach for the tools.
