Apple Tv & Airport Express

If we want music in other rooms do we buy the aiport express and speakers or can we use it via the technology in the apple tv version 2.
Regards
Paul

Yes, if you are just looking to stream music around the house from either your computer or even a mobile device then an express in each location connected to your audio system will do the job.
Of course if the audio system is or is next to a TV, you might want to get the Apple TV instead, the price is similar and you will get the extras that come with the Apple TV, like video.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
No, this doesn't work directly from the Apple TV. However if you play the radio station from your computer you can send it via airplay to both devices, thereby achieving what you require.

  • Need help with Apple TV + Airport Express setup

I am newbie to this whole Apple thing. Just switched from Windows world (20+ years of torture) to MacBook Pro about 6 months ago. Loving every minute of it.
    Here's what I currently have...
I have a 4000+ sq.ft. home with 3 levels on a 1-acre lot. I have 5 zones for music/movies - 7.1 dedicated Home Theater (lower level), 5.1 HT system for casual TV watching in Family Room, 2.1 system (music only) in my Home Office, 2.1 system (music only) in my Master Bedroom, 5.1 HTiB in Kids Bedroom. All systems have dedicated AVRs/Speakers/Subs (Denon, Harmon Kardon, Yamaha, Polk, Energy, Klipsch etc.).
I have 2 MacBook Pros and 2 Windows Laptops. I have AirportExtreme running a wireless network throughout the house. I have NAS attached to AE. I use iTunes to manage all my media content. I also have a iPhone 3G.
I have ripped all my CDs in Apple Lossless format into iTunes. I listen to free internet radio stations (NO Napster, Raphsody or other subscription-based services). Sometimes watch/listen free video/audio podcasts. I do NOT rent or buy movies/music via iTunes or any other source (just buy old-fashioned CDs/DVDs when neeeded).
Here's what I want to accomplish...
    1. Ability to "wirelessly" stream media to any or all zones.
    2. Central, easy to use controller for all systems.
    3. Should be able to accomplish this functionality without having to keep PC/Mac running.
Ques 1: I have considered Sonos option, but it can't do video content. So, I guess my options are Apple TV + 5 Airport Expresses. Is that correct? Will I be able to accomplish my goal with this setup? Anything I need to be aware of, e.g, network connectivity/slowdown issues, system reliability issues, ease-of-use etc.?
Ques 2: One of the major benefits of Sonos system is the ability to play different music in different zones. From what I understand, this is NOT possible with AppleTV + AirportExpress + iTunes setup. Is that correct?
What if I have iTunes running on 2 separate laptops. Can one laptop play it's own playlist via AirExp-1 and the other laptop play a different playlist via AirExp-2 & AirExp-3? Is this possible? If yes, then I guess this may "simulate" the zoning effect of Sonos (albeit thru 2 separate controllers; but it works for my needs).
Ques 3: I have a MobileMe account to keep my MBP and iPhone in sync. I have lot of Photo Albums in MobileMe Gallery and also in iPhoto on my MBP. How can this me viewed via AppleTV? Would I have to move my iPhoto from MBP to AppleTV HDD?
Ques 4: Currently my iTunes library resides on my MBP. Is there any benefit of putting it on AppleTV HDD?
Ques 5: Can AppleTV HDD be used as backup drive for Time Machine. Currently, I have no choice but to buy Apple Time Capsule to use as wireless backup drive for my MBP; I can't use my NAS for this purpose (From what I've read on forums, I think Apple removed this functionality).
Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you all.

    >and Verizon Fios w/ 50mg upload and 25 mg download.
Your internet connection is not relevant this is all runnig across your home network.
    >- I want to be able to backup all of my photos, movies and music
Time Machine on MacOS will will already take care of this for you.
    >- I want to store all of my movies on a separate devise that wont clog up my mac book pro
So put then do that.  You said you have two external drives. (As long as they both have network support)  Put the content on one of them and make the other one the back up.
    > (ideally I would like a wireless connection)
While technically possible not a great idea.  Streaming video over WiFi is usally problemattic and so are large scale data set backups.
    >- I want to be able to watch those stored movies through ATV (via itunes)
Only going to work when your Mac is on with iTunes running, but can be done.

  • Airport express and apple tv, airport express and apple tv

    Hi
Just wandering if this is possible.
I was wandering if I could set up a wireless network with an airport express and then connect the apple tv to it so I could show movies etc via my MAC while travelling.
Note there would be no internet connection involved.
I believe you can set up the 'no internet' wirelss net work with the AE, just not sure you could connect the the Apple TV to it.
May be a question for different forum, sorry if it is,
    Thanks in advance,
    Rich

I can play videos from the Apple Videos app and the from Photos app with the video going to the monitor and the audio through the speakers attached to the Airport Express.
but as soon as I try to do it with Keynote, no luck. I have to play videos in Keynote without sound.
what can I do to fix that?

  • Apple TV & Airport Express - Bose speakers

I bought the most recent Apple TV and Airport Express and had my Bose speakers hooked them wirelessly. The volume when watching movies from Netflix or Hulu Plus or just the TV is not as strong as it used to be when I had the older version of both devices.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
select the express as AirPlay speakers in the AirPlay options under settings on the Apple TV.

  • Apple Tv - Airport Express - Time Capsule,  Network Issue

    Hi,
I don't know if I'm on the right thread but I don't know in which one to post my question.
I have the following configuration in my home:
    Floor 1 :
    - ISP connection, connected to Airport Extreme.
Airport Extreme has the Network name : Floor 1 Network
    Floor 2 :
    - Airport Express connected via ethernet to the Airport Extreme from Floor 1.
    - Time Capsule extending the Airport Express.
Airport Express and Time Capsule are on another Network name : Floor 2 Network.
All is working perfectly. (Clients wirelessly connected are MacBooks, iPhones, iPads, iPods, Apple TVs)
    Here is my problem.
I have an Apple Tv on Floor 2
The Time Capsule is located not far from the Apple TV (line of sight, few meters)
The Time Capsule hold my movies
Sometime I have problem to sync the ATV (very very slow). I already restart ATV, and TC. But sometimes, cannot get better a thruput
I would guess that the Apple TV would sometime connect to the AE (which is further than the TC), and then create this problem.
I would like to make sure that the Apple TV connect wirelessly to the TC and not the AE.
How could I do this, knowing that TC is extending the AE wireless network, I cannot select from the AppleTv on which wireless node to connect.
Thanks a lot for the support.

    fleyne wrote:
Yes. Actually, when the thruput is not good, I check first that my book is properly connected to TC and not the AE. This by checking the BSSID.
How could I do this on the ATV ? Or How could I make sure that the ATV is wirelessly connected to the TC?
It probably won't show you everything you'd like to know, but you can learn something about the ATV connection with AirPort Utility. Enter "manual setup" mode, select the menu option Base Station -> Logs and Statistics, then select the "Wireless Clients" tab. That should show you the signal strength and noise for each client.
I would like to avoid to run ethernet cable between the TC and the ATV.
Then you might benefit from a powerline adapter as suggested by the post from "Jolly Giant".

  • Apple tv, airport express, macbook air, and iphone 4, will support audio streaming directly from every equipment to the powered speakers?

I'm trying to connect my Apple tv to airport express to stream the audio, will be posible? the same thing with my iphone? I have tried with my MacBook and works perfect!!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Your MacBook works with your express because it supports AirTunes. Your Apple TV and your iPhone do not support AirTunes and will therefore not work with your express.

  • Apple TV Airport Express Connection Issues. Help!

So I've been having trouble with my Apple TV a lot lately. I finally figured out what the issue seems to be I think but I'm not sure how to fix it. I live in an apartment complex and I have an Airport Express in my place and it's set currently to "Off (Bridge mode)" because the complex has a router that is assigning the Ip addresses for my items. Now for some reason my Apple TV will say it has connected to the internet but it just brings up the Computers and Home Sharing screen so obviously it is not connected. I've played with the settings before and for some reason it'll work when the Router mode is set to "DCHP and NAT" but then the internet turns to crap because of the conflict it creates between the router and the Airport Express. My question is if anybody knows any settings i need to change to make Apple TV function normally like all my other electronics do on Wi-fi when Airport Express is on bridge mode. I've hard reset the Airport Express and updated it as well as reset and restored the Apple TV.

You might want to try changing the channel you use for wi-fi to see if that helps.
You may be able to work around the issue as well by playing the audio from your tv rather than from your computer through the tv. By playing the audio from the tv it will build a buffer on the tv which will likely overcome any breaks in streaming, playing from the computer is live streaming if you see what I mean.

  • Apple TV + Airport Express can you have two separate streams?

Can you run two separate streams using an AE to a stereo and ATV2 to a separate TV/stereo combo?

    CaptFred,
Thanks. This is what I just figured out. I can't send two separate streams via remote or direct off the main computer (iMac). However, with the iMac streaming to Computer, AE, & ATV2 . . . I can pull home Home Sharing of the iMac from the MBP. If I select the already active AE speakers, the MBP tries to connect and says they are in use. When I select the AE speakers from the iPhone remote and turn them off (via remote) I can then select them from the MMP and stream different music to the AE (the other iMac originated stream continues uninterrupted).
Thanks again for kick to go try it .

  • Is apple tv convenient compared to airport express when it comes to audio airplay ? (all i need to do is , switch on my airport express)

is apple tv (2nd gen) convenient compared to airport express when it comes to audio airplay ?
i currently have my amp connected via optical cable to my airport express , everytime i want to listen to songs from my iphone , all i need to is switch on my amp and airport express , and then play from my iphone.
    the following are my doubts
1.i know that apple tv has mirroring and video airplay as well , but will it play audio songs from my iphone , just like my AE without any hassle of clicking anything or do i need to switch on my tv and opt for some settings ? ( my point is , is it as simple as AE or do i need to select a setting or 2 , i really dont have the patience of selecting any settings nor switch on the tv , my AE is **** simple cause all i need to do is switch it on )
2.i have a airplay enabled amp in other room , can i play a video from my itunes to apple tv (2nd gen ) and amp at the same time ? since the apple tv will play video also , will the audio play at the same time on both the apple tv and my airplay enabled amp ? or is there a lag between the 2 ,cause apple tv needs to play the video as well ?
3.can my airplay amp + apple tv + airport express play music at the same time when played through itunes ? ( its a music video , so apple tv will play video also ) without the lag ?

Would you recommend this set up
i would. i've got one of the original 40 GB units and it is probably the most-used gadget in my arsenal.
other users here will probably try to sell the new mini to you (due to it has an HDMI interface and whatnot) but IMHO nothing beats the ATV for ease-of-use.
Is there a new Apple TV coming out soon or should I just go ahead and get involved!?
there's rumor out there that a new model is in the pipe. however, nobody here would know when it is due and what features a new model will pack.
if you have the budget, go for it

  • Apple TV breaks my Airport Express wifi network

    Hi,
I have an Apple TV, Airport Express (mode = "Participate in a WDS network") and Airport Exreme (mode = "create network") and iMac all connected to router/hub via Enternet. Whenever I used my Apple TV, my iPhone and iPad can no longer connect to the wifi network (they keep asking for the password, but 'are unable to connect' even when the password is re-entered). Powering the Airport Express off and on fixes the problem (until next time the Apple TV is used).  Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks
    Luke

Participate in a WDS network would not be the correct setting for the AirPort Express because this type of setting is only used when the AirPort Express is connecting using wireless. You are connecting using Ethernet.
Suggest that you change the AirPort Express to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security setting and password as the AirPort Extreme....and be sure to configure it in Bridge Mode as the final step before you Update the settings for the device.
This will provide one large "roaming" network.

  • Apple AirPort Express

Hello, I am getting conflicting information from individuals and online searches. Does anyone know, if I purchase an Airport Express can I hook up an external drive and have the two work like a AirPort Extreme? I am trying to save money. I already have a 1TB external hard drive I use to back up my Mac. I want to be able to have the same benefit of the computer merely being in the same room/home as the drive and having it auto sync. Thanks in advance! Some say it works, some say it doesn't. Currently my provider is comcast, thus far it looks like I can use the express or extreme. I have not purchased the express yet.

Only the AirPort Extreme and the AirPort Time Capsule have got an USB port capable of sharing an external drive among all PCs and Macs connected to them, so you will have to buy one of them. It does not appear under Apple's specifications > http://www.apple.com/airport-express/specs/

  • How to Connect a NINTENDO DS to an Airport Express

    Okay,
I put together all the information from Apple's site and this site but one bit of information I found out myself.
    1. Finding directions for your specific Router
    Go to this link
    http://www.nintendowifi.com/consumerservice/routerSetup.do
    2. Select Apple, Then Airport Express
    3. Read Directions, the reason why your DS won't log on with your password is because you are using a "paraphrase" Password. What Apple does is takes this simple "Paraphrase" or "Word" that you use and uses an algorithm to turn your "paraphrase" into a proper 10 digit or so, password. Apple does this because they know it's easier for the average user to remember words than random 10 digit numbers.
Unfortunately, the DS wants the proper 10 digit or so HEX password, not your paraphrase.
Nintendo recommends using a Phone number for a password giving you a 10-Digit password.
Unfortunately, I did that and the password still didn't work. When I changed it I input it as the password on the DS and the DS actually made it appear to have worked, but when I tested the connection, I received an error code. Which means this must not be a proper HEX code.
    4. Finding out your proper Hex Code. Go to Airport Admin Utilities Found under APPLICATIONS-->Utilities or do a search for it in Spotlight if you have OS X 10.4.
THIS IS THE STEP NO ONE TALKS ABOUT.....
    5. Retrieve Your Proper Hex Password. Click on the "Password" Icon at the top which looks like a Padlock. Clicking that will show you a message that says, "To Connect to the Airport Network created by this base station from a computer not using Airport Software, you should use the following: Hex equivalent password (WEP Key):(your key will show up here)"
    6. Type that into your DS and your set.

Now my Girlfriend is happy because she gets to play Animal Crossing with other people online!
