Apple TV Airtunes vs. Apple TV streaming iTunes library

What is the difference? What is the advantage? I stopped using my Airport Express (for Airtunes) once I connected my Apple TV, because I liked having the visual interface. So why is everyone excited about the Apple TV's functionality with Airtunes? Isn't that a step backward?
Someone please help me understand the advantages/disadvantages. I haven't downloaded the update yet and thus I am confused. Thanks.

Streaming: your laptop or desktop can play music through the Apple TV setup, but not through its own speakers or speakers connected to it. And it can stream photos. Plus you have to set up each machine in advance to authorize it to stream. Most useful if you have one computer whose material is already on the ATV and another from which you occasionally like to access music and photos (in my case, my wife's laptop).
AirTunes: with no prior authorization (though you can password protect if you wish), any computer running iTunes can simultaneously play music through your ATV and its own or connected speakers in another room. But no photos. Useful if you want music in two places at once and want to use the computer to control what's playing. Easiest way to have a "guest" computer play music through your ATV.
Hope this helps,

  • Will Apple TV stream iTunes media saved on Time Capsule with mac switched off

I have Apple TV gen1 running on 40gb internal HD. I was wondering if upgrading to gen 2 and using Time Capsule, will macbook need to be on/on network, or can Apple TV gen2 stream direct from iTunes Media saved on Time Capsule

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Both models of Apple TV require iTunes to be running on a computer in order to stream content from it's library.

  • How can sync apple tv with itune library

how can i sync apple tv 2nd generation with my itunes library?

You cannot sync your Apple TV with your iTunes library, the Apple TV has no storage for content.
You can stream the contents from your iTunes library using homesharing on the Apple TV 2.

  • Can I move my iTunes music to a device with a different Apple ID using iTunes library on desktop?

I'm going to be getting a new iPhone real soon and I'm going to create a new Apple ID. The one that I'm currently using now will be handed over to another with respected agreements. I was just wondering if I could still move the music purchases with this ID to my phone that will have a different one using iTunes library on desktop.
    Possible?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. No "yeah, I have this problem too" posts because that is completely unhelpful, thank you.

You can move the song files into a different iTunes library and sync them to a new device, but they will remain associated with the original Apple ID.

  • Can you connect apple tv3 to itunes library without an internet connection?

I have an Apple TV3 and i am trying to connect it to my iTunes library on my computer. I have setup an access wireless point. Its a TP-Link TD-W8958. I dont have an internet connection on this wireless network becuase I am not living in my own house at this time and dont have a phone line however the guy at the Apple dealer store said i should still be able to connect my computer to the Apple TV3.
When i go to Computer on the Apple TV it says turn on Home Sharing and asks for my Apple ID. It says it cannot connect to the store which makes sense becuase of no internet connection but surely there must be a way to still turn on home sharing and connect with my computer.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks

Homesharing needs to check home now and again to verify your account. Unfortunately you will need the Internet in order to be able to use your Apple TV in that way.

  • Apple TV2 and iTunes Library

Hi.  I have just connected my iTV and when I try to shuffle songs from my iTunes Library album, a message appears stating there is no content.  I can see the song titles but they are greyed out.  I can play each song individually but this is a hassle having to keep going back to start the next song.  I copied a CD yesterday that I bought the other day and those songs can be shuffled.
    Cheers

Check in iTunes that the skip when shuffling option is not checked on those tunes that won't play.

  • Streaming iTunes library through ps3

Imac 27 intel with 10.8. Have a LaCie cloud box plugged in to AirPort Extreme. Want to be able to stream and shuffle my entire iTunes library through the PS3.
It connected, able to stream music and Iwas able to shuffle each album but not entire library. When I selected the artist folder, able to shuffle those randomly. When I tried again later from that same folder, noticed the previously shuffled music, each song, was listed and the playback followed that list in order and would not shuffle.
This may not be the item I need, perhaps the wdc MyBook live would work better?
PS3 support not able to help much and LaCie suggested copying the library to a playlist on the PS3 and trying it that way, hopeful it might randomly shuffle the library.
Anyone have this issue with PS3 or the LaCie box? Any ideas or suggestions? Would the WDC work any differently? Told the Mac has to be on for Apple TV to work, which I don't want.
    Thanks.
    Don

You can move the itunes library to the TC.. use the normal apple instructions for moving the library.
How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support
BUT.. 2. You cannot stream from the TC.. the TC is a dumb as a board hard disk in a router. No media extensions.. no clue whatsoever.
So this makes it just one more item in the network to slow you down.
You still need a computer running iTunes.. to stream to apple TV. And this is a problem because if you use wireless it will try to stream in both directions..
TC--Computer.. Computer--TC.. TC.. ATV. And that is unlikely to work very well.
So at least the link to the computer should be ethernet.

  • Stream iTunes Library to iPhone4 that doesn't require OS 10.5?

    Greetings,
Is there a service that will stream music from my iTunes library on my old G5 Mac to my iPhone that DOESN'T require OS 10.5? (My Mac uses 10.4.10, and I really don't want to upgrade.) I used to use SimplifyMedia, but now Google has bought them, so I can't reinstall the app on my iPhone4.
Both AudioGalaxy and Zumo require 10.5. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks!

the software I downloaded to be able to use my palm was the 421Revd.dmg off the HP site.  It has lots of data on it about the Bakery.  After a bit of time on the internet, learned that is a game.
I just want to be able to use my Palm - what is the story?  thoughts?

  • Least expensive way to stream Itunes library

I've been struggling for months with an older and unstable Windows laptop on which resides my Itunes library. I've constantly had issues with ATV dropping signal when attached to this box wirelessly. I've determined it's the computer, not the network or the ATV.
so now I want to replace it with something that I can rely on and scale upwards significantly. (Maybe 500GB or so). What would be the best and least costly way to do this? One suggestion I've heard is to use a PS3? Another is to get an inexpensive Mac or PC with external hard drive. It needs to be wireless as the ATV is connected to my AVR wired and I don't know how I would interface it to the receiver if it was moved to where I could hook it up to my "media control center" via wire.

    PS3 would be a non-starter I think.
The PS3 itself couldn't serve media to AppleTv.
Perhaps you could install Yellow Dog Linux but I doubt any Linux iTunes variants would be up to the task or serving everything to AppleTV 2.
You could probably buy a cheap Windows box for the cost of a PS3 and use a USB2 drive for your library if needed. Also consider a MacMini or a Macbook.

  • Apple TV streaming iTunes Match?

Okay, so iTunes Match tunes in the cloud works great on the ATV2.... which has a very small SSD, acting as a cache, correct?
So, the cloud must be streaming right? I mean, it's obviously not filling up my harddrive on the ATV, so it must be streaming. Why can't the same be done for the iPhone as well? I assume this will eventually be a setting added to an iOS update at some point?
I can imagine a setting that lets you have songs downloaded from the cloud removed after playing them, or maybe removed after a certain time? Of course, you could still keep the download too, as the default setting if you wish. This would be the best of both worlds - streaming and storage depending on your needs/wants.

Working fine on my system. Can you provide more info on what is happening? Is there an error message?

  • Multiple Apple IDs, one iTunes library

I'm backing up 3 iPhones to the iTunes on my laptop.
iPhone 1: My iPhone 5, syncs and backup to iTunes via USB cable.
iPhone 2: My dad's iPhone 4S, syncs and backup to iTunes automatically when charging over WiFi.
iPhone 3: My mom's iPhone 4S, syncs and backup to iTunes automatically when charging over WiFi.
We each have our own Apple ID and do not intend to share apps and music with each other.
The problem with this setup is, for some reasons, the apps that my parents installed on their iPhones are now asking for my Apple ID when updating.
How should I prevent this from happening? Am I missing something?
My goal is simple, I want apps installed on my parents' phones to remain theirs, and automatically backs up their iPhones to the iTunes on my laptop whenever they are plugged in and charging.

Since the three of you are using separate iTunes accounts, then you each need to run your own itunes, which should be logged into the itunes store using each individual account.  For that, on a laptop, you each need to have your own computer accounts.

  • Apple TV-playing itunes library through TV speakers

I have just installed apple TV-initially it showed as an alternative speaker in my itunes so that I could play my "unsynced" tunes through the TV speakers-now it seems to have disappeared leaving just the "computer" as the only speaker option....what do i do to get the ATV option back?

ok..I've restarted my Router and Under my Itunes Preference I can't seem to Find The setting for Air Tunes. Other then a Complete factory Resetting what else do I need to do to correct this? It was an Option Once But Now it's Not.

  • How can you give full access to your Apple ID and iTunes library to someone who moved in with you and have their own Apple ID?

As the title says, we would like to use just one account in the future, or at least fully share both account so we can share our libraries. Thanks in advance!

  • Can you stream iTunes library from Time Capsule to a MacBook if you're connected to the internet anywhere in the world?

I want to buy a MacBook Air but the flash storage means not enough space for all my movies and music. Instead of carrying around an extra harddrive, I'd rather make the Time Capsule my external harddrive. Most of the time when I access it it will be from my house, but say I'm just out and about and connected to the internet...assuming my Time Capsule is on, can I use it as basically a cloud device and stream my iTunes movies and music to my computer?

Probably not unless you have a super speed internet connection.. most people on adsl have 1mbit upload connection or less. you cannot stream movies over 1mbit.. I doubt you can even stream music. Actual throughput is only 800kbit/s...
That is why you store things in the cloud.. you download speed from cloud is much high than upload to it.
That is unless you have a super high speed, fibre connection to your home??
It is certainly possible.. if you have enough bandwidth.. 99.999% of people don't.
