Apple tv and air port?

do i need apple tv if i have air port and my new tv can connect to the internet?

Network person here.... the apple tv box, wireless router and my laptop ( on same wireless network ) are all connected.   The Apple TV and my Laptop both getting ip from wireless router thru DHCP and both showing the same network mask of 192.168.0.    .129 for apple tv and .130 for Laptop... sub 255/24 with a Gateway of 192.168.0.254, but, I can't ping apple tv from laptop?  No ports are blocked and my firewall/antiv on  laptop are both off.  Wondering, Sue has an apple router at home and this unit works there.  When we hardwire the apple tv into the wireless router here it connects and pings just fine,  Only difference left is the Wireless mode could be different on a Netgear and and Apple router. Currently we are using 2.4GHZ band 11ng.  Is this compatible with the Apple TV?

Hi, I'm using a Mac Pro here. I am trying to connect it with my NAS hard drive. But i could not connect to it because i have an ethernet which connects to the intranet in my company and Air Port for the internet and it could not detect the the ip address after i input the correct address on "Connect to Server" window. Please help! Urgent! Thanks

I did not say it is not possible.
I said if your company networks are monopolizing both ports, you should talk to them about what options are available.
Maybe you can get the company Intranet over wireless if you change some configuration items such as Subnet Mask.
Maybe you can get on the Internet over Ethernet.
You really need to ask them, and do not let them blow you off because you have a Mac. If they balk, ask them how it would be done on a PC (becasue it will be the same on a Mac).

If you are intending using your hot spot to download movies for the Apple TV, you'll very quickly eat through your data allowance.

  • OS X Mavericks and Air Port base station

i just got a air port base station, an old one, and ive just updated my macbook pro to os x mavericks.
when i try to connect to the air port, it says that i cannot configure the air port with the version of air port utillity. apon downloading an older version of the utility, i cannot install it because i get a masseage saying 'the version of mac os x on this volume is not supported'. i would just like to know how i can install the older version of air port utillity tobe able to get my air port to work.
    thanks for any help.

I already have the wired router for the phone, and want to go wireless.
You can use the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) or AirPort Express. Configure it so that the option to distribute IP addresses is DISABLED. Connect it to one of the LAN ports on your existing router.
You can also use any other wireless access point.

  • Using modem Sagem f@st 3464 (Scarlet One : vdsl   tv   VoIP   wi-fi) : impossible to create a new Wi-Fi network (2.4 or 5 GHz) ? Conflict with DHCP / NAT and so on. No answer from the Apple help desk, Air Port Utility 6.1 unusable (configuration = Win 7)

    Good afternoon,
My internet connection is delivered by a modem Sagem f@st 3464 (Scarlet One : vdsl   tv   VoIP   wi-fi), it's almost the same than a BBox-2 from Belgacom (software and configuration).
This modem has 4 ethernet port, 2 for TV, 2 for LAN, the WAN port is RJ-11 and the connection is a PPPoE (in fact, it's the Belgacom network). I also got a Wi-Fi 802.11g on it.
The main raison why I bought a TC is the dual Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz (for 802.11n), especially for my MacBook Pro and my iPad 3.
First of all, can I do the following with my TC :
    1) connecting the TC using a ethernet cable from one of the two modem's LAN ports to the TC's WAN port
    2) create a new Wi-Fi network using the TC ?
Up to now, after 2 man days of configuration, my TC is connected to my existing LAN network, as a bridge, but there is no new Wi-Fi network.
The Airport Utility 6.1 "Wizard" is just un-usable and I need to use a Win 7 laptop in order to get access to all the configuration !
The standard manual is very poor.
Does someone already create a new Wi-Fi network using its TC connected by Ethernet on a modem/router device ? How do you set up the DHCP (and NAT) ? Which range did you use ?
    Sincerely yours,
    AVDB

This is easy enough to do..
Plug the TC directly into a computer.. without other connections to do the setup.
Using the newly installed 5.6 utility.
    Bridge the TC.
    Create a wireless network.
This is an older screen shot and I would set security to WPA2 Personal only not WPA/WPA2 Personal as shown above.
I do recommend you use wireless names that are short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
    Update the TC..
Now plug it into the modem router.. it will be a part of the network without doing NAT and DHCP itself.. which you do not want.. that leads to double NAT issues.. but it is a WAP that provides access to devices on both 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands directly to the main router.

  • Mac Mini and Air Port Express

I bought Airport Express today for my Mac mini. I tried to hook it up and nothing is happening. All I get is the amber light flashing on and off. Do I need the base station (Airport Extreme? What am I doing wrong? I am connecting with a cable wire.

Hello SoulRyder. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I assume that you had your Mac Mini connected directly to your cable modem using an Ethernet cable prior to getting the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) ... correct? ... and that you were not having any issues accessing the Internet when connected this way?
If the answer is yes to both, the it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your network components when introducing new devices.
Try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
    o Power-off the modem, AXn, & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AXn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AXn, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AXn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

  • Dual Ethernet Ports, and Air Port Wifi

I have a early 2008 and 2009 Mac Pro and was wondering if there was a way to connect both ethernet ports and the airport wifi as one "adress" so i would essentially have 3x the bandwith for downloading/uploading, etc.
This is in both Snow Leopard and Win XP Via Boot Camp

You might start by reviewing this thread and associated links:
    http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=57382.
Apparently it should be possible to link the ethernet ports together but not the wireless.

  • Time capsule and air port utility

so i have set up my time capsule. successfully. my macair recognizes it. however, when i go to time machine and turn it on, the drop window comes down and my t.c. is not there. it needs to be in the drop box for me to select it to use as backup, correct? when on the phone with tech support, it asked me to check what version of airport utility. i have 5.2.2 according to them, time capsule can only work with 5.3. i have checked for updates and there are none at this time.
this is my first mac. any help would be appreciated

Yeah, you're hosed. I have the same problem. Apple is being inconsistent in their recent product releases - they pitch a CD-less laptop and in the next breath sell you a wireless backup box that requires your laptop to install software that they ONLY distribute on CDs. You will need to buy or borrow an external USB CD drive.

  • Using an ext HDd and air port

So I've had no end of trouble with trying to get backups done on a network so one final time here I go!
I have 1 Mac, that I would like to backup with TM via a network, I recently discovered my current router with an HDd won't work cause it's not AFP. I'm assuming the airplay extreme is.
So now I've partitioned my 2tb, 1tb fat and 1tb mac journaled. Can I hook it up to an airport extreme switch on and enjoy the glory of TM backups?
Add info, Mac intel 3.06ghz 10.6.6, I have an ATV, xbox and the Mac using media stored on the fat partition, I just assumed I would need fat cause of the xbox but if that's not the case I could use that info too!!

    no.
taken from [this|http://help.bombich.com/kb/troubleshooting/backup-to-network-volume] knowledge base article:
CCC cannot, however, backup directly to a network filesystem (e.g. AFP, SMB, CIFS, NAS, Airport Extreme "Airdisk", or Time Capsule).
    or other software ?
you might want to have a look @ ChronoSync.

I Just purchased a 21.5 iMac and connected it to the Internet using a apple air port router.  How do I connect my windows PC to my air port router so I can transfer files.

It makes life easier to install the airport utility for windows.. which has a couple of different apps in it.. if you airport is new type then the utility is too old.. but is still valuable for Bonjour which provides network information for shared devices in the apple world to windows.. and a disk access agent..
It will also help the Apple computer access shared directory in the windows computer.. nowadays this is pretty easy.

  • Air port express and ipad, iphone, apple tv

i have my audio speakers plgged into my 3 air port express for 3 rooms in my house. when i use my old apple tv, i can play my music on all 3. however, on my ipad, itouch and mac computers, i can only do one at a time. Why?

The iPod Touch does not have the "Multiple" speakers function.
    You only get one choice.
I have 3 Airport Express units and this is just the way Apple has it setup for the iPod Touch.
You should be able to choose all 3 on your Mac.
Look at the bottom right of your iTunes window and you should be able to choose multiple speakers.

How can I connect my new MacBook Air to a LaCie hard disk with TIme Capsule backup from my old Imac? LaCie has USB 2.0, FireWire and eSata ports.

You can direct connect your MBA to the LaCie via USB 2 cable.  If you have an Apple Airport Router you can USB connect the LaCie drive to the router and then use Airport Utility to configure it.  Time Machine can access it either way.
