Apple tv and airport express, apple tv and airport express

Simple questions from novice: If I have Apple TV, would there be a need to also have Airport Express? What is the main difference?

An Apple TV will work on any WiFi network so an AirPort Express is not required.
For the most part an ATV and an AirPort are 2 completely different devices. An Apple TV is intended to be connected to a TV and a home theater receiver for streaming audio and video. Even for audio the artwork will be displayed on the TV screen as well as all the menus.
An AirPort Express is a wireless network adapter for setting up a or extending a WiFi network. As a bonus it has an audio out jack which is used with AirPlay which is built into iTunes and iOS devices for an external speaker. It can also be used to create a wireless printer using it's USB port.

  • How to connect apple tv and airport express on same Hi-Fi?

    Hello everybody,
My question first : Is it possible to output the sounds directly from the Apple TV to my Airport Express (via Airplay, wifi, or whatever connection) and connect with the jack my Airport Express to the stereo? This way I could hear the sound from my tv or listen to my music via airplay the way I want.
Now, the long explanation : I have a Tivoli sound system which only has a Jack as input plug. I also have an Apple TV (2) to watch movies. For my movies, as my stereo doesn't have any optical audio input, I've connected the television directly to the stereo. As I used to listen music from my Iphone on the dock aswell, I installed a double jack adaptor to permit two connections to my stereo (1 for the iPhone dock and 1 for the television).
Now things have changed a bit. I bought an airport express to replace the dock station.
The problem is that I can't use the double jack adaptor anymore. If I want to watch tv I have no sounds from stereo until I unplug the airport express Jack. The reverse works, I can listen to my music when both airport Express and television are connected.
If you have an idea? Let me know.
    Thks.
    Christophe

....... Is it possible to output the sounds directly from the Apple TV to my Airport Express
    Unfortunately not.

  • Need help setting up WiFi - Xfinity with Network Switch, Time Capsule, Airport Express and Apple TV

Hello - I recently got Comcast Xfinity service.  We had switched from a different service.  Our wifi service was never great, but prior to Xfinity, it worked decently.  But now that we have Xfinity, our wifi is much worse and very unreliable.  I am seeking advice on how to setup my various Apple wifi devices in my home.   I have attached a diagram that illustrates what I am dealing with.  We have a large old house with stone walls.  Comcast does not support this issue.
To explain the attached diagram, we have a total of 4 levels in our house - an unfinished basement, 1st floor, 2nd floor, and 3rd floor.  The Xfinity router is in the basement and it is connected to a NetGear 10/100 network switch.  I already have ethernet cables running from the network switch in the basement to various locations throughout the house.  So I have ethernet connected to my time capsule and ethernet connected to each of my 3 Airport express devices.  The dark lines running from the network switch to the various devices represents ethernet cable.
The immediate problem that we are having is that we are unable to connect to our wifi networks.  The networks show on my mac laptop and my iPhone, for example, but I am unable to connect.  I know that I am inputting the correct password, but most of the time, we cannot get in.  Sometimes we can..... Very frustrating!  Also, due to the fact that I setup what I have over several years, I have multiple network names.  I once tried to fix that issue, but was unable to tackle it due to my lack of understanding.
Here is what I am looking to accomplish:
    1. Seamless wifi access throughout our house.
    2. One name for our wifi network.  Right now we have multiple names for multiple networks.  Just want to simplify and have only one network.  (I guess that an additional "guest network" would be ok, but not absolutely necessary.
Also, if you think I should disable the Xfinity wifi, and just rely on my mac wifi devices, I am perfectly fine with this.  Just tell me how to do so.
I have no idea how where to start or how to set this up.  I imagine that I would need to disconnect everything and reset and start from scratch?  Can someone tell me what I should do?  Even general advice would be helpful, but the more specific, the better, given my limited understanding.  Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

  • How best to use TWO Time Capsules, Airport Express and Apple TV?

    Hello
I have the following Apple equipment and am wondering how best to plug it all together. At the moment I am not using some items at all because I do not know how to best use!
    1. MacBook Pro (2012 model) 'Mac1'
    2. MacBook Pro (2009 model) 'Mac2'
    3. MacBook Air (2011 model) 'Mac3'
    4. Time Capsule 1TB (model A1355)  'TC1'
    5. (another!) Time Capsule 1TB (model A1355)  'TC2'
    6. Airport Express (2008 model)
    7. Apple TV (2013 model)
    8. LaCie 1TB USB Hard Drive
    9. Apple iPhone
    10. Sonos system
    CURRENTLY
TC1 is plugged into the Virgin Media modem to provide a WiFi network called 'Amer's Apple Network' around the house. The Virgin Media wifi has been switched off to reduce interference.
TC2 is not being used. The Airport Express is plugged in upstairs (or sometimes near garden) to extend the 'Amer's Apple Network' and this seems to work fine.
Apple TV is plugged into main TV and is plugged into 'Amer's Apple Network' directly using Ethernet to TC1 but often runs slowly and does not work if Mac1 is not awake (or iTunes is not running on Mac1).
LaCie is plugged directly into TC1 and currently has a old copy of my iTunes library stored on it which my Sonos system access. However, there seems to be a problem in that iTunes randomly uses that LaCie library and/or local Mac library. Often we get a pop up message on Mac1 saying "Library cannot be found" and we have to manually navigate to the LaCie drive (via the TC1 folder) to open iTunes. Also connecting iPhone to Mac1 seems to work very slowly as it appears to be trying to back up to LaCie drive.
    QUESTION
What would be the best, most efficient way of using all (or if some is redundant equipement then which), to set up the following:
    1. A shared home network which enables all three computers (and any future Macs and/or iPads etc) to access one master shared iTunes library, which is the one that is updated with any new music, films etc added via any of those machines
    2. A shared home network that enables a shared files folder but also allows each user to keep their own personal hard drive (eg locally on whichever machine they are using).
    3. A fast (as possible) iTunes back up process when connecting iPhone to computer
    4. Usage of both TC1 and TC2 (and Airport Express) to extend network around the house (several weak spots exist) and also to maximise storage using the 1TB of each TC1 and TC2.
    5. Would it then also be possible to attach the LaCie USB drive for an additional 1TB storage? If so how and would it be very slow? From existing usage it appears to be very slow when used as a regular access drive, so perhaps better as a 'slow' drive that is just occassionaly used for back up and nothing else
Main question is (to the networking experts!), how would you personally set up all above to give best wifi coverage, fastest back ups, access to Sonos for iTune library, access to Apple TV, and shared folders etc etc. I basically seem to have lots of kit (albeit some quite old) and nothing seems to be working together particularly well.
Happy also to ditch any bottlenecks in the above equipment list (eg LaCie USB drive?) and add something which would better bring together the other components?
    Any thoughts much appreciated!
    Best
    Amer

So ... FINALLY ... I found some time to implement this!
    Steps taken and results:
    1. Moved my entire music library to Mac1. Used the opportunity to also share my other Mac2 onto HomeShare and copy across any music files from Mac2 onto Mac1 that were not already there.
Result:  Mac1 now holds my whole music library locally. Works incredibly fast whenever playing a track, adding a new track or updating info on existing track. Good!
    2. LaPastenague's instructions for bridging TC1 with TC2 worked a dream. Only thing is they are basically next to each other as I don't have the energy (or cabling expertise) to install (cleanly) long runs of ethernet cable.
Result: Got a clear Wifi signal, not sure if any faster than before but I assume two TCs next to each other both sending out the same network signal can't be any worse than one. Main thing is that I have an extra 1Tb network drive (i.e. TC2) connected to TC1 which I can access from all my Macs now.
    3. Copied the entire Mac1 Music library over to TC2 drive into the Data folder. This happened relatively quickly (I think!) ... but would welcome any comments on whether slower than expected, to highlight if I might be able to improve the connection. 12,000 songs in 2 hours, with Mac1 sending the files to TC2 wirelessly. I know I could probably have connected Mac1 to TC2 by ethernet cable to speed up, but I had run out of Ethernet cables by now!
Result: All my music (as of today anyway) now on Mac1 AND on TC2 in normal readable format (i.e. by Sonos and as a simple back-up that can just be carried around and copied anywhere in the event of loss of Mac1 drive
    4. Set up TC2 Music Library in Data folder to be the networked music folder for Sonos using "\\TC2\Data" (ps. why doesn't Sonos allow a simple click and select option for choosing drive and instead force us to go back to the 80s and type in drive path which isn't always clear, especially on a Mac!)
Result: Sonos can access all my music (as of today anyway) on TC2 and no need for Mac1 or any other Mac to be open.
BUT: As you may have guessed, the issue with the above set up is that as soon as I buy a new song, it will get added to my Mac1 quickly and smoothly ... but the area where I really use my music (i.e. Sonos via TC2) will have the older music library.
QUESTION: Is there any way in which I can adjust the above set up, so that whenever I add new music to my Mac1 it also copies across to TC2? Don't mind if this is done slowly and later (eg in middle of night) but of course don't want to have to copy across manually each time. Would prefer it to just update newly added tracks regularly.

  • How can I connect my Apple TV and Airport Express to the rest of the network for the least lag?

    Hey guys,
I have an Airport network here in the office.  All new Airport Extremes.  The internet comes into one, which then connects to our switches, which then connects to other Airport Extremes over ethernet.  Everything is setup to create its own network with the same SSID, and only the leader is the DHCP server.
I recently added an Apple TV to the network, only it was too laggy for video chat.  I bought an Airport Express (for the audio), and ran ethernet to connect it to the network and the Apple TV, but things were still slow.
Now, I set the Airport Express up as a DHCP server (with NAT) itself, with a separate SSID, and it's working great.  The only problem is that people would rather not have to switch wifi networks.  Is there any way around this?  BTW, the AirEx is complaining about Double NAT, which I understand is happening, but it's still working fine... it's really just the having to switch networks that's a problem for us.
    Thanks!

Hi - as you probably know, double NAT is not recommended - you might have problems with some websites and updating - but if it is working that is great - as far as the Wi-Fi issue is concerned, you should still be able to create a wireless network with the same name an password as the rest of your network so no one has to switch.

  • Can I stream music to apple tv and airport express at the same time?

Does anyone know if I can stream music to both AppleTV and Airport Express (speakers) at the same time?
I have a TV in my living room and external speakers on my deck and want to stream music to both at the same time so I have the same music playing in both rooms - but I can't get an answer on IF I can do both at the same time or it I'd have to select one over the other?
    Anyone know?

yes - the built-in music app allows to select one speaker only at the same time.
now i've found the WHAALE Multiroom Player App (http://www.whaale.com) - and it sends directly from the iOS Device to my 6 AirPlay speakers. One of them is an Apple TV...
all "in sync" and without any special hardware and additional software.
And i am able to stream different songs to different rooms...
    Just AirPlay speakers - wifi router - WHAALE -> that's easy :-)

  • Can I set up a 2 (or 3) room audio system? I have iphone 3, iphone 4 and ipad 2 and need to know what hardware, if any, I need for this (airport express?, apple TV?) Also, would I use icloud or home sharing?

I need to know what hardware, if any, I need to do this (airport express?, apple TV?)
I simply want to send music from my itunes to 2 different rooms at the same time. Is it possible? I have iphone3, iphone4 and ipad2 if that helps.
Also, would I use icloud or home sharing? Sorry for the noob question, any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!

The answer is not if you use iTunes.
The TC is NOT an iTunes server.. it is not a media device at all. It is a backup location for Time Machine.
You need a computer in the network which stores the iTunes library and you can then play it via the ipad.
A mini with a large USB drive plugged in will work fine.. it doesn't need to be new.. a couple of years old mini will work just as well.
As an extention to this, can we use multiple Airport expresses plugged into mutiple sound systems to simultaneously access different music from the same time capsule?
I am not sure.. there will be network limitations to this.
Look up how to use itunes in a network.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4620
You would do better perhaps posting the question in iTunes section.. if as I guess you are actually using iTunes.

  • Regarding an Apple TV and an existing Airport Express/AirTunes setup

alright, i think i'm going to make the jump now for the new Apple TV. but i do have a few questions, particularly re: my existing Airport Express/AirTunes and wiring since i'm really maxed out in terms of open ports that i have left.
—my HDMI will have to go through a new HDMI smart switch hub into my older plasma that has one HDMI input. no problem, i've researched the smart switch, and realize the Apple TV may go in the low priority input since it seems to throw a continous current. if anyone LOVES their smart switch, throw me a bone here.
--however, i will need to go audio optical out into my receiver based on my current setup. and my receiver's optical inputs are all currently used. however, one is in use by a nearby Airport Express. since that AE has been used for AirTunes for years, i assume i can now safely ditch it's optical out since i will now be running my music through the Apple TV instead, correct? and therefore i will have my receiver's optical input now freed up, and there goes my Apple TV wire instead. just looking for verification here.
--since this AE is right there, will I get any speed advantage to the Apple TV by dropping an Ethernet cable from the AE's output into the Apple TV's Ethernet input, rather than relying on a pure wireless signal? my assumption is no, since they are both receiving the signal from my Airport Extreme on the other side of the house, but i thought it was still a worthwhile question.
--this particular AE has also been acting as a WiFi range extender (it's b,g,n). so i guess i will still just leave it plugged into the wall, but turn off it's AirTunes sharing, correct?
--(side note: if i wind up not needing the AE's optical out, and i don't need it's Ethernet out, i will then be moving it across the room since i'm ridiculously tapped out of electrical outlets by my entertainment center. and that's where the Apple TV power cord will go. just a boring fyi)
--i truly think i had another important question, but i cannot remember it. so i'll repost when it comes to me.
so i think i know my answers, but i always learn in these forums. so any thoughts or feedback is greatly appreciated.
    thank you!

Older AppleTV did not play well with some switches, so it'd be sensible to get advice about one that definitely works with the new unit. They may have ironed out HDMI glitches but too early to tell.

Yes, the AppleTV will replace the Airport for optical audio duties from your iTunes library. Add an iPhone/iPas Remote app and it should work very nicely as it did with the 1st gen.

I doubt it would be of any benefit as AppleTV has wireless n anyway.

In that case if it's an extender you may need it on for AppleTV to pick up the wireless, though I think I'd try and see if it receives the main signal adequately first.

    I know that feeling.

  • HT201335 Can i use airplay with the apple tv and airport express without an internet connection? Basically Set it up as a closed network?

I was told I could set a local network with the airport express, apple Tv, and my iPad to stream videos or pictures to a TV for a presentation.
No internet connection is available at the location.
Is that possible? Or do I need to access itunes homeshare with an internet connection to make this work?
I've set it up at home where I have an internet connection and it works fine but I want to move the setup to my church for a class. The data I'm using is stored on my ipad.
I know I can do this wired with the HDMI adapter but would like to do it wireless.
    Thanks for any help!

Ok so we now have a solution to the problem.   A friend of mine came round to work this out with me last night and we were able to get it working, but it is not as easy as I had hoped.  Fisrtly we plugged the airport express into my router using the ethernet cable  (for this I am using an Airport Express Base Station") and in airport utilities selected the airport express.  In edit, we then gave the airport express a new range of IP address which did not conflict with any of the other applications that I have already assigned.  We also named the Airport Express with a distinguishable name.  We then waited for the changes to be registered then unplugged the Airport Express from the router.  I then plugged my AppleTV via HDMI into a tv to test it and selected the new wifi network with the new Airport Express distinguishable name.  I was able to watch a video that I have on my ipad directly on my tv without being connected to the internet, and was able to play Airplay presentations.
No the easiest solution, and certainly not something that anyone at Apple has talked me through in my lengthy conversations with them at Applecare.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can I Use Airport Express for Airplay and a non-apple router with streaming capabilities on the same network?

I want to do the following things but can't find one device that fits all purpose.
Wi-Fi router that has USB port to share external hard disk wirelessly to all devices (Mac, Samsung Smart TV, PC, Ipad, Iphone) along with inbuilt torrent download capability that also has a 3.5mm jack to do airplay.
Greedy? Yes I know but why can't we have it all I ask.
Airport Express severs Wifi Router + Airplay purpose
Then there are other non-apple routers in market that satisfy my need to attach external hard disk and stream to the devices mentioned (Note: Timecapsule will not stream to my Smart TV)
So I am thinking why not connect both Airport Express and a second non-apple router and get best of both worlds.
    Is it possible?
    Thanks in advance.

  • I have an Apple TV and an Airport Express, can I use these to stream all audio from either my iPhone or my MacBook Pro, including Pandora?

I have purchased an Apple TV and an Airport Express as a gift for a loved one and was under the impression that these two would not only allow for movies, videos etc would be streamed to the TV from my MacBook Pro, but also set up Airport Express with speakers and stream music from my laptop or iPhone.  Is there a way for all music, including Pandora, to be streamed through the Airport Express?  I can only figure out how it works with iTunes, not Pandora.
    Thanks for the help!!!

You might want to take a look at Airfoil for Mac to be able to stream any audio source on your Mac.

  • Itunes crashes on addition of artwork to movie folder and apple tv (2nd generation) will not see itunes while itunes plays playlist over wireless network to airport express??

I have 4 non apple pc exhibiting same issue. Whether you have ten movies on board the pc or 500 on external storage Itunes locks up after you "get info" and try to add video cover from IMDB whether the art is in my pictures on PC or off USB key / external storage. Very frustrating to the extent that I bought a macbook thinking that it may be a non apple issue and bingo same issue whether films on macbook or on nas/ external usb. Effectively itunes may be made to crash by adding artwork!
2nd Issue noticed at weekend I have a small music library of approx. 35gb music in itunes music folder when a playlist was being played within itunes and airplay was selected to an airport express that is connected to distributed music system in house all works well during party. Guest have access to DJ app via remote app or control of content being player. My kids disappeared into the front room and while playlist on notices 2 things. The ipod touch ( 4 mths old) would not connect to apple tv player 2nd generation while airplay on to music system and the infra red remote remote worked fine but apple tv would not see video files in itunes while airplay on. When airplay disabled all absolutley fine , re- enabled airplay and apple tv bumped again. I have a wireless N router and have successfully had 2 apple tv 2nd generation working off itunes video files without issue. There are delays but both are seen in remote app and both players see itunes folders. I would have thought video streaming to apple tv players sucked up more bandwidth that one airplay to airport express and one apple tv 2nd gen.
    Anyone experienced same

OK - I managed to fix this. Will document for others.
I started to think it was a firewall thing. So I turned off both my Windows 7 firewall and my BT Home hub firewall. It started working!
So turned back on the BT home hub firewall - still working. So it must be a windows 7 firewall.
Went in and checked that Itunes was there as an exception... Yep. So why still not working?
Found out that the entry in my Windows 7 firewall said I-Tunes - but when you looked at the details button it wasnt pointing to a program - it was just blank.
So added a new entry and pointed that at the I-Tunes exe file.
    Now all working...

  • My airport express seems to no longer be supported by Apple. Was working fine, just blinking amber. So tried to update and reset, but update will not install with Lion? Im disgusted.

Airport express was blinking yellow. Tried to update, but my computer said update is not supported (yellow exclamation points). I have a mac pro with Lion and latest updates. So I reset express, yes that was a mistake because it was at least functioning on my stereo, now it does not function at all and shows on my wifi as "airport express", used to be labled "stereo". So it asks for an update, I download the update, but computer will not allow update to be installed. I will buy a newer one if I have to because I enjoy it's function, but I will be extremely disgusted with Apple to have to do so.

If you are using Lion...as you indicate...is it possible that you mistakenly downloaded the incorrect version of AirPort Utility?
Try the following version for Lion:
AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion

  • Apple TV Inference with Time Capsule and Airport express?

I have recently bought an Apple TV 2, which seem to be working fine, however since installing it on my wireless network both my Time Capsule and Airport Express can't be found. Following some fault finding it seems that when I unplug the Apple TV I can reconfingure the TC and AE.
The TC and AE are configured to join my existing network....and have happy sat there for a few years.
I would really welcome any ideas.
    Thanks
    R

    Welcome to the discussions!
It sounds like you have the basic configuration covered correctly.
You might want to check some settings on the TC:
Wireless Mode would be create a wireless network
"Allow this network to be extended" should be checked
The AX should be set to "extend a wireless network"
The "allow wireless clients" box should be checked
In this configuration, the ethernet port on the AX is active so things should work.
A minor point...Although the TC is a dual band device, the AirPort Express is not. Can you make sure that that the Express is connecting to the "main" network on your TC? The "guest" network cannot be "extended".
If you place your laptop close to the Express and hold down the option key while you click on the AirPort icon, some connection information will be displayed. The MAC address of the device that the laptop is connecting to will be indicated. Make sure that that this is the MAC address of the AX, and not the TC.
Another note...If you have not changed the default "main" network, the radio mode is broadcasting 802.11n only at 5 GHz. These higher frequencies are absorbed by walls, ceilings and any obstructions much more quickly than 2.4 GHz signals. So, if you AX is some distance away, you may not be receiving a strong signal for the device at that location.
If you have a signal strength utility on your laptop (the "bars" at the top of the screen are not a very good indicator of actual signal strength), turn off the AX and take a reading to see what kind of signal the Express is receiving where it is located.
Please post back with your results.

  • I was told at the Apple store that I could simply plug in ( electric power) the Airport Express and it would find my wireless network. I hoped to use it as a way to play music from my iphone. I do not use other Apple routers etc,

The Airport Express is not finding my wireless network. I do not have any of the devices listed below. I have a Belkin wireless router. Can I still use Airport Express ( without plugging an ethernet cable into it) ? Any ideas for how to make it find my network ? It is sitting next to the wireless router-so is in range.
If you already have a wireless network in your home and want to extend its range, AirPort Express can help. Just place it in range of your primary base station — an AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule, or another AirPort Express — and near the area where you want your wireless connection. Launch the easy-to-use AirPort Utility app on your iOS device or Mac, and you’re mere minutes away from long-range Wi-Fi enjoyment.

Hi - you can do what you want to do with AirPlay from your iPhone - but unfortunately it is not as easy as the people in the Apple store told you - your first problem is that you have a non Apple router - you cannot extend a non Apple router wirelessly with the Express - you can only join the network and connect an ethernet device to it - you can however connect via ethernet and have it create a wireless network of its' own - you can set this up from your iPhone or the XP - but this is a complicated setup and would involve many different discussion areas of this forum - therefore I would suggest that you use your 90 days of support and consult directly with Apple to do this - go to this link - http://www.apple.com/support/contact/

  • Apple TV doesn't show up in iTunes when AirPort Express is running at the same time - Can't play music on both Apple TV and AirPort Express speakers together

    Hi there!
I am trying to play music from my Mac on multiple speakers, Apple TV and AirPort Express. But as soon as the AirPort Express station is plugged in, the Apple TV does not show up in iTunes anymore. When trying the same using iPhones Remote app it works perfectly.
Does anyone of you have an idea why iTunes does not show me both Apple TV AND AirPort Express? (it has nothing to to with the IP adress as the adresses are different).
    Thanks for any help!

As my english isn't too good I made a screenshot to show you what I mean.
As you can see in the image below iTunes only shows me the computer speakers and the AirPort Express. But at the bottom you can see that iTunes actually recognized 3 different speaker (Mac, AirPort, Apple TV 2). Why does the Apple TV not show up in the multiple speakers window? Any ideas?
