Apple TV and Ethernet issues.

I want to know if it is possible to connect both the apple TV and my macbook pro to ethernet and still be able to use airplay.  I can see the apple tv but for some reason I cannot get it to connect.  When I unplug the ethernet from either of the devices I can connect.  Please help if you can.

Hi Jermobu,
If you are having issues with AirPlay between your MacBook Pro and your Apple TV, you may find the information and troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful, in particular the portion about Ethernet:

  • ITunes 9, Apple TV, and AirTunes issues

It seems that iTunes 9 on my iMac has two issues, possibly related, both of which are very irksome. Both issues appear after the computer wakes from sleep, leading me to think they are symptoms of the same problem.
Issue #1 is that the AppleTV keeps vanishing from the list of devices. iTunes knows about the AppleTV, the AppleTV is on the network and can stream from iTunes, but the device is missing and hence sync won't work. I've checked the firewall log and the AppleTV is being accepted for incoming connections, so it's not a firewall issue. I've reset the AppleTV, reset the connection between iTunes and the AppleTV, resynced all my content and the problem persists.
I've found two ways to fix this issue: restart iTunes, or go to Preferences : Apple TV, uncheck "Look for Apple TV", close Preferences, open Preferences and recheck the same selection. After a 2-3 second delay, the AppleTV appears in iTunes.
Issue #2 is that the remote speakers connected via an Airport Express disappear. This seems to happen at the same time as the AppleTV disappearing, as the drop-down box for selecting the remote speakers vanishes. Normally it lists the computer, the Apple TV, and the stereo but then the box goes away.
Similarly for issue #1, I can get the drop-down back by going to Preferences : Devices and unselect "look for remote speakers", close and reopen Preferences and reselect the same checkbox. Interestingly, doing this does NOT bring the AppleTV back as a device, but the Apple TV is listed along with the remote speakers.
I think the two issues are related, as they both involve the network. My computer is linked via Ethernet to the DSL router with 802.11 then going to the two devices. It seems to me that iTunes is not reestablishing the connection after waking from sleep. But it's not consistent; I can put the computer to sleep and wake it up, and the connection is there. Other times the connection is gone.
The only thing I can't rule out is a problem wirelessly connecting to the devices, but the AppleTV has always reported 5 bars of signal, and the fact that it still streams from iTunes, yet iTunes doesn't see it, makes me think the problem is in iTunes.
Hopefully this will be helpful to someone else with these problems.

After suffering with the Apple TV for four months, and scouring the internet for fixes, tricks, and workarounds before posting, I have to wonder how many thousands of people there are silently slamming their heads on the sofa while they wait for apple TV to unfreeze, catch up to their attempted remote prompts, or simply just restart as if ATV even gave up on itself. (issues are in Bold)
I have to opt with the streaming feature to bring my movies, music, and photo's to a big screen and home theater sound system due to a 2TB (mostly full) Western digital external HD plugged into the 802.11n airport extreme.
A possible reason for *the 2 second stoppages in play of movies and music are that the airport has to link the music/movies to my computer(itunes), which must travel back to the airport to go to the apple TV.*
I'm also using the iphone for remote use, being that the infamous IR issues with the standard remote are so notorious, I wouldn't be surprised if Best Buy started selling the ATV with white paper already taped to the sensor.
*While using the main menu, 1 out of 4 times in a five minute period of navigating the ATV, the product is unresponsive to commands from either type of remote, and I am left to:*
*1. wait until it unfreezes after about 4 min (60% of the time) when all prompts are suddenly recognized by ATV, all at the same time, to which often it goes back into another multi minute freeze before use is temporarily made available again.*
*2. hold the menu button down on the IR remote so ATV restarts after i've waited over 5 min to see if the freeze will work itself out(15% of the time) or*
*3. try to wait out the issue until the ATV restarts itself with no prompted action (10% of the time) to which I am asked to pick a language again and given the option to restart, run diagnostics or restore factory settings.*
*---The last 15% of the time ATV stays frozen and unresponsive to any remote for, in my estimation ever (I literally waited almost two months, pressing buttons many times a day to try an wake the ATV got nothing but a screensaver before i gave in), until you're forced to pull the plug because the holding-menu-button restart option isn't even working **
I've tried restoring factory settings, changing IR remote batteries, unpairing and repairing, unsyncing and resyncing both itunes libraries, remotes and airport extreme connections, jogging the itunes preferences, putting paper in front of the IR sensor, restarting both itunes and unplugging the ATV, and I even went back to exchange the apple tv for another apple tv to see if it was just an issue with the hardware...nothing has eased these ailments.
The airport and all wireless devices in-play are no further than 15 feet from each other, including the airport, which is just on the other side of a very thin wall w/i 10 feet of the ATV.
*If, in the menu freeze, (which, again happens about 25% of the time i attempt to navigate the ATV menu) you give up on the iphone remote, u see the ATV is receiving the signals from the IR remote, but nothing moves most of the time (mentioned above) and the best you might get after waiting and trouble shooting long enough is the screensaver stopping for a split second, when u press a button on the IR remote, before continuing to ken burns until you want to use the ATV to play frisbee with interstate 20 traffic.*
I'm not sure if Apple over-engineered this device to the point where it's tripping over itself to perform the most basic functions, but I bought this device so I could watch my movies and listen to my music wirelessly, and at this point, the DVI wire and headphone jack splitter are a much more reliable (yet burdensome) option than the ATV.
If I had to guess, it seems most problems stem from users who stream from an external hard drive, whether it be plugged into the host computer, or broadcast wirelessly (this is not taking into consideration the IR remote issue). This might be an unpopular suggestion to Apple, and i'm sure you have some reasoning for not making this an option, either for monetary or twisted legal obligations but the internet complaint factory might be a little less whiny if you just simply make an option to have the ATV be a screen emulator, with AirTunes, and cut all the other youtube, direct internet to ATV garbage that 65% of the people using this product didn't buy it for.
I have been nothing but awestricken with Apple products since I was a child, and thought there were no ends to the company's ability to make products that work with each other easily, seamlessly, and without the need of a computer engineer to set it up for you. Unfortunately though, it seems, for the time being, we might have met the limits.

  • Apple TV3 iTunes ethernet issues

I have been unsuccessfully trying to trouble shoot an intermittent connection/communication issue accessing iTunes with my Apple TV3 via ethernet. The issue is this: I can always connect to my iTunes music library (stored on an iMac) via wifi but connecting via ethernet is hit and miss (usually miss). Sometimes the Remote app on my iPad indicates I need to turn on Home Sharing (it is already on); other times I can connect to my iTunes music library but when I try to play a song nothing happens. Sometimes the song starts playing and then stops about 45 seconds later. Occasionally it works flawlessly.
The ethernet connection/communication problem has persisted for over a year through several ATV and iTunes software updates. Why not just be happy with a wifi connection? I am assuming that I get a fuller data stream from my lossless files via ethernet than with a wifi connection. (This could be a an erroneous assumption.)
My Ethernet network runs from my Centurylink supplied Actiontec PK5000 modem/router through a pair of Netgear Powerline adapters to my ATV in an adjoining room.
Before I take the trouble to run a hard wire ethernet cable through my crawl space direct to the ATV (to trouble shoot the Netgear Powerline part of the system) I am planning to bypass the router side of my Actiontec PK5000 and use an Airport Extreme for both the Ethernet and wireless network.
    Question:
Is the idea to change over to the AE a reasonable troubleshooting step – assuming the problem might be the Actiontec router? I’m hoping the AE will have better connection technology that will play nicer with my ATV. I plan to switch the Actiontec over to transparent bridging mode and use the AE as both my wifi and ethernet router.
Changing over to the AE seems fairly straightforward in concept. My wife relies on the network for her job so I don’t want to switch to the AE if it takes me hours of connection troubleshooting while she is tapping her fingers in the background. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Apple tv and Ethernet no wireless

Can I connect an Ethernet cable from Apple TV to a TV to watch a video that is on my Mac without having a wifi network?

Without a network the Apple TV has no use, do you already have one or are you just looking for a way to get your home movies from the Mac to the TV. Personally I'd get a router and create a network and use the Apple TV as it's intended, but you might also consider a cable solution. See This User Tip.

  • Apple TV and Jailbraking Issue..

Dear friends, "YouTube" is full of different kinds of jailbraking for Apple TV(2). So tonight I tried to "follow the fashion".
Something went very wrong I tried to restored Apple TV via iTunes restore, and I am taking an error 1602 message. My Apple TV, cannot restore...!
    Any help...?
I recomend to all users DO NOT follow these kind of jailbrakes.

Yannis, unfortunately we cannot discuss hacks for AppleTVs here.
I would suggest you talk to Apple to see if they can help or post questions in any technical areas related to said modifications where you are more likely to get an answer.
This is one of the reasons such hacks are not endorsed or supported by Apple.
It would be fair to say that many people probably do use them successfully but if you have issues you can't rely on Apple to help - they might, you never knwo but no guarantee.

  • Apple TV with Ethernet issues

    Hello all,
I have had trouble with ATV1 for some time and just when you think you have it licked it stuffs up again.
I have it connected with a Ethernet cable and it suddenly has decided it will not find the router or connect to the internet.
I have done all the reboots and restarts i can possibly think of and wonder if any of you have found a solution to this issue or have experienced the same thing.
One day it works the next it doesn't and there is no obvious reason. When it works its awesome !

I have seen issues on ATV1 and ATV3 where DHCP leases within the network expire as machines come and go. The ATVs should try and renew their DHCP leases or request a new IP, if the renew fails whenever they are "woken" up.
In some cases, I have had to watch packets on the wire to ensure whether such requests do happen or not.

  • Solaris 10 x86 and ethernet issue

I am running a Gigabyte 7NF-RZ mobo (nVIDIA chipset) with an onboard LAN. I installed the x86 version of Solaris 10 and it does not see the ethernet. So, I have two questions:
    1) Is there a driver available for this and if so, where do I find it?
    2) If I have to use a PCI ethernet card, which ones work with x86? I have check the HCL list and only Sun cards are certified. There are lots of other that are "reported" to work but I really don't want to have to buy several cards and experiment.
    TIA
    Bill W

The old 3-Com 905B series is a safe bet. It's supported and Solaris comes with the driver(elxl) out of the box.

  • Apple ID and iMessage issue

    Dear ,
I am trying to activate iMessage using my ( apple ID :<edited by host> but it tell me the username/ password is not correct , my username/ password working with all apple services but not working with iMessage.
This problem started with me after I switched off the IMessage service and switched on again from settings , I rest the password , restarted the device and rest the settings but the problem still .
Your help and fast action is highly appreciated from Apple.
Thanks for your time and consecration ,

make sure the e-mail being used on the list of your e-mails settings is the one from your Apple I.D. and not the other one like @iclould.com  e-mail address that often could cause confilicts if is not your Apple I.D. e-mail set up to be the default on iMessages.

  • Apple USB-to-Ethernet, OS 10.5.4 and a MBAir. Having Issues

Ever since updating to 10.5.4 on the MBAir, my adjacent Windows XP system has been looking connectivity. Basicly it is consently telling me that the Ethernet cord has been disconnected.
I mention the Apple USB-to-Ethernet because once I unplug it from the MBAir, the issue goes away on the WinXP box.
Also, the network connection with the MBAir has been 'flaky' using the Apple USB-to-Ethernet; so 'flaky' behavior when going wireless.
Wondering if others have experienced anything remotely similar to this. Wondering if maybe its a faulty Apple USB-to-Ethernet.
    Any comments are welcome.

If the drive is new then it isn't prepped for the Mac. You should do the following:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • My experience with Apple TV and HDMI/HDCP issues

I am convinced that it is the software update to 4.2.2 from 4.2.1 that is causing this issue.  All forms of applications only worked once for me and then it reverted back to HDCP issues.  I read several postings everywhere including plenty at Apple's forum and AVS where people were very frustrated with this HDCP issues.  Anyways, here is what I did before taking it back to Apple store....I bought AUVIO high speed cables from Radio Shack which is rated very high and tried that and I still got HDCP issues when using NetFlix or AirPlay from iPad.  Youtube from Apple TV always worked well without HDCP complaints.
I packed everything back and took it to Apple Store (you can return without re-stocking fee up to 14 days from the day of purchase).  After 14 days, you cannot even return it and you can ONLY fix it.  I waited for a Technician.  They heard my complaints but didn't refute any of it (possibly because they have had numerous complaints on this product).  It took 5 minutes inside for them to test and see similar issues with the box that I had.  So, they have swapped it for a new box.  Before I left the store, I checked the settings including software version and Audio/Video settings in the Apple TV that is connected at the store.  I found three main differences none of which the Apple customer service staff agreed could be the reason for my problems (surprise!!)
    1.  The software update from the shelf and the one they were using was NOT updated to 4.2.2 (it was still running 4.2.1)
    2.  Because of the software update, the Audio/Video setting for HDMI had the options to toggle between Auto, RGBy, RGBhi & RGBlo bandwidth.  I believe this was in place to make the HDMI interface output as component with higher or lower bandwidth but the newer update will ONLY give you the Auto option (!!!)
    3.  They had this directly Ethernet wired and not through Wireless network and were recieving the all the full bar strength signals.  On the box that I returned, eventhough I have 18 Mbps speed at the house (any given time of the day), the Network speed test was taking a long time.  Moreover, after the Apple TV network test, it doesn't spit out the outcome of the tests (a BIG bummer and useless for testing).
Anyways, I took the new box and hooked it up directly to my SONY BRAVIA XBR3 TV to one of the HDMI ports, disabled the feature to send or recieve data to Apple directly and did NOT update the software.  It worked fine and have tested all of the options.  From what I have read so far (I have only spent 30 hours of my weekend on this when Apple product hookups are supposed to take 5 minutes ONLY), there is NO guarantee that it will work continuously as people have had things work on them for 6 months and then suddenly have the HDCP issues.
Will wait to see....if it continues to work....

I figured it out. Had to go to general settings on the main screen and restart. Synch of audio is much better.

  • HT2822 I want to use my Apple TV on ethernet and wireless...

I watch iTunes programs on TV via my Apple TV and prefer an ethernet connection for transfer speed and reliability, but I also want to watch live (internet) TV via my iPAD through Apple TV Airplay and this requires a wireless connection.
I don't seem to be able to do this switch automatically on an as required basis, as Apple TV prioritises the ethernet connection and drops the wireless,so I've had to revert to a wireless connection for both scenarios in lieu of tedious manual switching from one to the other and back.
Can anyone suggest a better way.
I have a wireless modem router and Powerline adaptors around the house. Apple TV is latest generation.
    iPad3 is on latest iOS.
    pc is Win 8.1.
    iTunes is 11.1.5.5.
    Thanks

I assure you it only needs to connect to your network via one or the other.
Then there is an issue with AirPlay.

    Nope.
LAN is local area network or the ethernet connections for your network.
WLAN is wide are network and refers to your connection to the internet.

  • Ethernet Issues with Time Capsule and Airplay

I am running OSX v10.9.2.  I have a 3-week old 3TB Time Casule (TC) connected by Ethernet cable to a DSL modem.  I broadcast our wireless network from the TC rather than from the DSL modem because of the faster speed that TC provides.  My computers (iMac also 3 weeks old) and a Windows laptop are connected to the network via a fibre optic cable LAN.  There are also three 2nd generation Airport Express modules which I use to push music around the house.
When I connect my iMac to the WiFi network, I have zero problems reaching Time Capsule, backing up my iMac using Time Machine or pushing music throughout the house.
However, when I switch to Ethernet (my preferred network access), the TC and the Airport Express units drop (have orange warning signs in Airport Utility).  Additionally, TC drops from my “finder shared menu” (but oddly enough, not each and every time).  When this happens, I switch to WiFi and all returns to normal.
Since I prefer using Ethernet, what can I do to eliminate this problem…or is this something that I need to wait for Apple to address/resolve?  I was online with Apple Support and they claim the problem stems from the OSX Firewall and that I use bitDefender as a virus protector.  However, when I disable them (and restart the computer each step of the way), the problem is not solved. It may work for about a minute or 2 (only after restart) but then it all drops.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

You might need to explain a bit more as fibreoptic hookups in a house are too expensive for most of us. Fibre technology is well developed but not at home level routers and switches... so unless you are using enterprise level stuff I don't know how to test it.
You do need to understand something.. the airport utility at least is 100% dependent on wireless now. It has taken me ages to understand that simple point. v5 utility was happy with either ethernet or wireless.. but the actual connections to the wireless routers as far as the OS in the computer is concerned is totally wireless. Even if you use ethernet your wireless should also be active. Just make sure it is second on the list of networks so whenever ethernet is up, it is preferred over wireless.
There is a big FATT BUTT here.. I do not like running wireless and ethernet simultaneously as I found it slows the network.. even if the order is correct. But I have not done the tests on Mavericks with the newest AC model TC. It definitely causes slow downs on earlier OS.
It is not actually possible to avoid the wireless issue .. although you can manually mount the disk in finder. That should stop it dropping out.. mostly.
Another BIG FATT BUTT.. you need to mount by IP not network names.. I have found in Mavericks network names drop in and out like a yoyo. So the only reliable method is using IP addresses. That means you need static IP on the TC at least, which is no problem as long as it the main router. If you have it in bridge, use the dsl modem to fix the IP of the TC via dhcp reservations. Or set static IP on it.
Then you go to Finder.. Go in the top menu, Connect to server.
    Type in AFP://TCIPaddress
    eg at default. AFP://10.0.1.1
It will search and discover the TC, and then request a password.. this is your disk access password on the TC, mostly set to device access password. It is public by default. Most likely the setup wizard will have forced you to change it.
Don't forget to save it in your keychain.
Will this fix it.. hmmm no.. probably not??
There are more bugs here than you can poke a stick insect at.
Perhaps once a week you will need to reboot everything... If it is daily or hourly.. then something more needs doing.
I do strongly recommend everything on the network using SMB names.. Not apple naming convention. Since Mavericks is now using SMB networking protocol by default.
Fix it everywhere on everything. Keep names short, no spaces and stick to pure alphanumeric.
Tell us if it helps or even if not.. !!

  • Autocomplete and linking issues with gchat on apple messages

So I'm having a couple related(ish) problems with apple messages and gchat/hangouts/whatever it's called these days and imessage on my laptop:
    1) Gchat contacts sometimes do and sometimes don't autocomplete when i cmd+n for a new message and then start typing in the 'send to' field. this occurs irrespective of whether i try to start a jabber conversation via typing their email or via typing their name. I've noticed a couple of semi-consistent factors that seem to be impacting it, at least sometimes, but can't pinpoint anything entirely consistent:
-It seems to be more problematic with contacts that I have their (google) email address on their contacts card in my icloud account on my actual computer/iphone (as opposed to not having them linked to a contact, and them being merely listed on my gchat friends list by virtue of being imported when i created the account)
-It seems to be more problematic with buddies that i have had more recent contact with, so that their existing conversation is closer to the top of the messages window (and plus, even this isn't entirely consistent - sometimes it lets me type and find their jabber account even if i chatted yesterday and it's second or third on the list, other times it just returns no results in the address field, and other times (when they're a contact with email address as well as phone number) it only gives me their imessage account but their jabber doesn't show up and i have to go to my buddy list to find them)
Any thoughts? It's sometimes easier to just do cmd+n and type a friend's name even if i have an existing conversation with them relatively top to the close of the list, than manually finding them in the list or looking at the buddy list or using the search bar. cmd+n typically works at least with imessage conversations, and sometimes even with jabber accounts/gchat, so it doesn't seem like this is merely a feature that doesn't exist.
    2) This might be less of a bug and more of a feature, but i'm wondering if there's a way to deactivate it. A lot of my friends have both imessages and gchat, and i have their google email and phone number on their contact card. in this case, apple messages, seemingly arbitrarily, alternates back and forth betweeen gchatting them and imessaging them in the same conversation. it doesn't always correspond to their away/available status on gchat, and even when it does correspond, i'd still prefer to be able to manually override to send an imessage even if they are available on gchat, I'd prefer to just have separate conversations going for imessage and gchat (because a lot of my friends just never look at one or the other depending on whether they are or arent near their computer, so i need to be able to control where the message goes). I do have a separate jabber conversation with John Smith from their imessage, but within the imessage conversation it still sometimes switches to jabber. It seems like this only happens for contacts that have both email and imessaage on their vcard, but i'd prefer not to delete the email address from their vcard just to resolve this issue, since the email address on contact comes in handy for purposes other than gchat. is there any workaround/way to disable this auto-switching between imessage and gchat accounts in the same conversation, while keeping contacts' email and phone number linked on their vcard?
    3) Some, but not all, of my android friends show up as having imessage when i type their name to contact via gchat. sometimes it says imessages for their phone number, and sometimes instead for their gmail (or both). With respect to the issue when it happens in phone number form: i've checked their contact cards and their phone number is just listed as mobile (not iphone or anything, though i'm unsure if the category of phone number actually tells the phone whether they have imessage, or if it recognizes (in this case, incorrectly) on its own). Of course the imessage won't actually send, but it's pretty annoying (especially in light of the problem from #1). Is their any way to tell messages that this person doesn't have imessage so it stops saying they do?
Couldn't decide whether to post these separately or together, but since they may or may not be related i opted for the latter. sorry for the length. searched for all 3 and didn't find anything quite on point.

    Hi,
    Re 1)
If a Buddy  (Google, AIM or Yahoo) is in the Buddy list as just the ID or Screen Name then broadly speaking they are not in your Contacts list.
As such they will not show a "Real Name".
However any Buddy can be added to the Contacts List even if you don't add a "Real Name"
This in itself can also cause issues as the Contacts app does not create what it sees as Duplicate cards.
i.e. you cannot create two cards with the name John Smith.
It is easier if the ID/Screen Name becomes the "Real Name".
    I have three Macs
On each the My Card  for myself reflects the Computer it is from and those Cards are synced on my iMac.
Some of the various Jabber and AIM Screen Names are linked to the particular computers.
That means if I type "ra" as the start of my Name in the "to" spot I get this:-
First is a national breakdown service for helping out with cars (as opposed to any other breakdown)
The next is a Buddy that I have hidden.
It lists Apple ID and telephone numbers that it thinks are iMessages compatible (it thinks all numbers are valid)  liked to be G4 tower's card.
It continues listing AIM, Jabber, Yahoo and other iMessages accounts as well as the Bonjour contact details.
As you can see some at the bottom are IDs and Screen Names that are not associated with any of the Address Cards.
In these cases my name from part of the ID so "ra" picks then up.
As you can see you should get AIM, Jabber (Google), iMessages and Yahoo account indicated.
That should then lead to 2)
Once in the conversation you can use the "To" spot to change which ID you are calling and therefore effectively change which service you are using.
In this Pic I have chosen to call Myself (easy with multiple accounts)
My iMac My Card has no jabber account listed so you only see iMessages and  AIM option listed.
I can "call" my main AIM name (ralphjohnsr) from the other three Accounts linked to this Card.
From your end it may look like a random switch but in fact is most likely from an incoming change by the Buddy/Contact.
You can make the change by using the "To" spot and a drop down
The centralised messages in the chat should tell you of Changes as will the ID in the text field before typing
    Re 3)
It will depend on what their Apple ID is.
Some have had @mac.com names for a long time and linked them to MobileMe than more recently iCloud.
Some linked their @me.com names form MobileMe to iCloud at the Change.
Most recently iCloud IDs have been given @iCloud.com emails from the start.
However any email can be used as an Apple ID.
The pic above has my Apple ID partially hidden for that lower  iMessages info across the center.
You may find that some people are using their Google ID as their Apple ID AND also using it as both the iMessages registered name and the Google ID  in the Messages app.
    Lets explain this another way.
When iChat 1 came out Apple joined the AIM service with it (it did AIM and Bonjour  which was then called Rendezvous)
At that time Apple entered in to an agreement with AIM that any Apple Issued ID would be a valid AIM Screen Name.
At that time the Apple Service was .Mac and @mac.com IDs were being issued as paid for accounts, Trial Accounts and after while Lapsed paid for accounts.
These all worked as iChat/AIM Screen Names.
Then Apple changed to MobileMe and issued @me.com IDs
The trials only lated until you ended them and the IDs no longer worked in iChat after that as valid AIM Screen Names and nor did lapsed Paid For accounts.
More recently Apple have stopped a paid for Service and moved to iCloud.
At the change you could link Any Apple ID to iCloud and you got an @me.com ID from the iCloud server (it could be the same as the on MobileMe but did seem to be "separate").
Later these became @iCloud.com IDs  (Some people have both under iCloud and in some cases linking @mac.com names to MobileMe @me.com accounts for email still continues).
To be clear you could link Any existing email ID to iCloud such as  Google ID.
But broadly I am speaking of gaining various Apple Issued IDs over time that may or may not be linked to one account.
These Apple Issued IDs works as Valid AIM Screen Names in Messages. (the iCloud issued ones don't work in iChat 5 or earlier though).
I linked an external to Apple dial-up Email that has been my long time Apple ID to iCloud and got an @me.com ID at first and later an @icloud.com one as well.
I can use these two separately in Messages as Valid AIM names.
Someone using their Google ID as their Apple ID could use it as the iMessages registered Name AND as the GoogleTalk/Jabber entry as well.
This might explain why it looks like they are swapping about.
There can be one other explanation and that is dependent on where they are logged in.
Obviously a GoogleTalk user can log in to the Google web Mail page and use Talk there.
Although I don't use Google+ I presume there is a similar web page to chat from there.
This would limit them to being "On Google" rather than iMessages when they sent a messages to you.
    Re GoogleTalk
    Obviously Android is Google.
The Account settings at Google incudes the "products" you can link and use from your Account.
Previously with a Google Mail Account that included enabling "Talk" which then allowed you to chat from the Web Mail Page login (or your chosen Jabber able app)
Now Google use Google+ and this seems to give you automatic access to "Talk"  to the extent it is no longer something you have to Activate.
I am wondering if using a Android phone is linked to having a Google+ account and that the phone number can be part of that ID set up (similar to iMessages and iPhone Numbers).
If it does it would then depend if the phone is linked to both the Number and the Google ID as to what they can login as in certain situations.
I am not sure I have covered everything but I think I have covered most things.
From what you post I am not sure that there is an issue or not although I have posted what is normal and expected I think there are some fringe things that are an issue.

I left it running over night, it was running perfectly, in the morning the screen was black. i tried to restart it and got no display but i can hear the machine running. so i put away for several months, plug it in, charge the battery, it boots, i have a display, it loads the desktop and freezes. when i try to restart it theres no display. the last time i tried, i started it, i got to the apple screen and nothing. whats the issue here? please help.

Will it boot OK in Safe Mode? See What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392 Takes a while to run, but it usually "fixes" problems.
Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup

Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck
