Apple tv and Ethernet no wireless

Can I connect an Ethernet cable from Apple TV to a TV to watch a video that is on my Mac without having a wifi network?

Without a network the Apple TV has no use, do you already have one or are you just looking for a way to get your home movies from the Mac to the TV. Personally I'd get a router and create a network and use the Apple TV as it's intended, but you might also consider a cable solution. See This User Tip.

I want to know if it is possible to connect both the apple TV and my macbook pro to ethernet and still be able to use airplay.  I can see the apple tv but for some reason I cannot get it to connect.  When I unplug the ethernet from either of the devices I can connect.  Please help if you can.

    Hi Jermobu,
If you are having issues with AirPlay between your MacBook Pro and your Apple TV, you may find the information and troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful, in particular the portion about Ethernet:

  • Apple tv and a local wireless network

i'm trying to set up my apple tv and my macbook pro, but i have no internet connection where i'm at currently. i assumed you could simply set up a local wireless network, so i hooked up my netgear router and my macbook recognizes and well...the apple tv kinda freak out when the wireless router is on. it doesn't always respond to the remote. when it does find the wireless signal, it frequently resets itself and then stalls out again....when i turn the router off, the apple tv functions normally....with no content from my macbook though of course......
    any thoughts?

is there a better router to go with when trying to set up a local wireless network with no internet?
I use the Apple Airport Extreme. I love it, but many others like D-Link, Netgear..... I would look for an N router if your Netgear isn't. What is your Netgear hooked up to? That might be the problem. I also think that you might want to hook up the ATV2 wired and then restore it, and reenter all of the user and setup info afterward. It may not be the Netgear at all. If you restore the ATV2 and it still does it, then you can look at the Netgear and what it's hooked up to. No sense spending money if what you have works well. If you don't have Internet (I just noticed that statement above), I think you'll have issues with the ATV2. It has to have a way of connecting and phoning home to Apple, etc.

  • HT1595 Apple tv and a secure wireless connection

My daughters wireless connection at her college requires a username to login (a netid). How can I configure the apple tv to use such a network?

When your daughter contacts the IT Dept at her school, she will need to provide the MAC address. Settings, General, Network
Right above the Signal Strength bars you will see a set of letters and numbers.
That is a hardcoded specific address of the device which is unique to it. Each network device has such an address (your smart phone, network printer, modem, your laptop, ...)
If the school allows they will enter the MAC address into their list of allowed devices to bypass the login screen.

  • How can i use an airport base station and multiple airport expresses with U-verse and still use wireless tv boxes?

I just got uverse, and when I put my Airport Base Station in Bridge mode I lose access to the 4 airport express stations I have. Can anyone tell me how to turn off the u-verse wireless, set up a network with all the apple stations and still have wireless u-verse tv boxes work? Thanks!

Can I relocate the airport base station to downstairs and connect it to the Sawtooth there for receiving wireless from the Verizon router and broadcast further to its wireless network?
Sorry but no the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) will not wirelessly connect to the network provided by the Verizon FiOS router.
What you could do is get another AEBS, an AX, or a Time Capsule and place that downstairs. Then use that device to wirelessly connect to the wireless network provided by your current AEBS. If your current AEBS is not 802.11n capable then you would need to use WDS to make this happen. One bad thing about WDS is that each WDS link cuts your affective wireless bandwidth in half.

  • HT2822 I want to use my Apple TV on ethernet and wireless...

I watch iTunes programs on TV via my Apple TV and prefer an ethernet connection for transfer speed and reliability, but I also want to watch live (internet) TV via my iPAD through Apple TV Airplay and this requires a wireless connection.
I don't seem to be able to do this switch automatically on an as required basis, as Apple TV prioritises the ethernet connection and drops the wireless,so I've had to revert to a wireless connection for both scenarios in lieu of tedious manual switching from one to the other and back.
Can anyone suggest a better way.
I have a wireless modem router and Powerline adaptors around the house. Apple TV is latest generation.
    iPad3 is on latest iOS.
    pc is Win 8.1.
    iTunes is 11.1.5.5.
    Thanks

I assure you it only needs to connect to your network via one or the other.
Then there is an issue with AirPlay.

    Nope.
LAN is local area network or the ethernet connections for your network.
WLAN is wide are network and refers to your connection to the internet.

  • Home Sharing not working between wireless PC's / devices and ethernet wired PC's on the same router.

Home Sharing is not working between wireless PC's / devices and ethernet wired PC's on the same router.  I installed a new Verizon FIOS ActionTec  MI424WR GigE wireless / ethernet router, replacing the original FIOS router.  With the old router Home Sharing worked fine across and among all iOS and Windows wired and wireless devices.  With the new router Home Sharing works between and among the Wired PC's but not between the wired PC's and the Wireless connected PC's or iOS devices.  Home Sharing also works between and among the wireless connected PC's and iOS decices but not between them and the wired PC's.
Only the router was changed.  No changes were made to any of the devices except all were updated with the latest version of iTunes 10.7.0.21 and the iSO devices were updated to iOS vrsion 6.01.  Three PC's are wired and all are running Windows 7.  There also is a Windows Home Server connected to the router by ethernet port.  It does not run iTunes but does provide WebDAV services to my iOS devices.  This works fine.  Two PC's are wireless, one running Windows 7 and one running Windows 8.  All of the PC's are connected to the same (new) router via it's ethernet ports and it's wireless access point.  Two of the wired PC's are connected via a high-speed  ethernet hup that is connected to the router (Home Sharing works fine between the two PC's on the hub and the PC on the router).  All wired and wireless devices on the router are visible and members of the router's Home/Office virtual network.
All of the PC's are visible in the Windows network and all shared files are accessable from all PC's, both wired and wireless.
Obviously the router seems to be the issue, something between the ethernet and the wireless access point components.  I checked the settings and found nothing that would prevent Home Sharing between the wired and wireless devices.  There is no setting that isolates the wireless network.  I have done the following:
Read the router user manual and checked all the settings
    Rebooted the router and tested.
Turned off the router's firewall and tested.
Home Sharing is turned on all the devices and all use the same Apple ID.
    Restarted iTunes and tested.
Verified iTunes is "Allowed" in each PC's firewall.
Again, I can Home Share between the two wireless PC's but not between either of the wireless PC's and any of the wired PC's.  I can Home Share between my iPads and iPhones and either of the two wireless PC's but not with any of the wired PC's.  I can Home Share between any of the wired PC's but not between any wired PC and a wireless PC or iOS device.
I hope someone may have had a similar problem and has a fix suggestion.  I'm stumped!  I have a;so contacked ActionTec and awaiting an answer.

    Solution from ActionTec is:
    Log into your router.
    Click the Advanced icon
    Cclick Yes
    Click on the IGMP Proxy
    Select Disable
    Click Apply

  • Airport extreme: my macbook, cannon wireless printer, ipad and iphone cannot connect to internet when Apple Tv and/or PS3 is connected

Please help!  I have an Airport Extreme (model A1143) as my router, and I have several devices connected to it wirelessly and wired.  I have my Macbook, Macbook Pro, iPad 1, iPhone 4S, HTC Thunderbolt, Cannon wireless printer, and Apple TV (gen 1) connected wirelessly.  I have my PS3, an external hard drive and DirecTV connected via ethernet cable (but sometimes my PS3 is also connected wirelessly).
I began to notice a few months back that my wireless printer had connection errors and could not print.  And I noticed soon after that, from time to time, the internet connection on my Macbook and iPad was extremely slow, to the point that I could not surf the web.  I tried several different printers before realizing that this problem was happening only when I had my PS3 turned on.  I tried both PS3 wirelessly and wired, but the problem persisted.  I figured it was a problem with the PS3, so I just made sure that PS3 is off when I need to use the wireless in the house.  But I recently bought an ATV (gen 1) and also noticed the same problem when it was connected to the Airport Extreme (wirelessly) - i.e., Ican't print, and my internet is super super slow on macbook, ipad, etc.
So, it must be that my Airport Extreme is the problem, not the PS3 or the ATV.  Is there anything I can do to fix this (i.e., some setting that has to be changed)?  Or do you think that my Extreme is just dying out on me and it's time for a replacement (I bought it about 5 years ago)?

This problem, for reasons unknown to me, has resolved itself on its own. After several attempts finally everything decided to work. How does stuff like this happen? Thank you.

  • Apple TC and Netgear Router behaving as one Wireless Network

Having had a problem recently with an HP 7520 printer suddenly begin to disconnect and reconnect to the wireless network of my Apple TC I have tried several workarounds.
My setup includes a Netgear Modem/ Router (providing wireless network A) which is connected to an Apple TC (providing wireless network B) by an ethernet cable. The Netgear hands out ip addresses to all devices on my network and the TC is in Bridge Mode and provides the wireless network that all my computers and devices connect to.
To try and identify if the issue is with my printer or something to do with my network or routers I tried connecting my printer to the Netgear router (wireless network A) seperate from all the other devices on my network which are still connected to the TC (wireless network B). This seems to have stopped the printer from repeatedly disconnecting and reconnecting from the wireless network so it looks like a recent firmware update to the Apple TC may be the cause for the repeated disconnections.
As the printer is now on a different network to all my other devices I would, from all I've ever read about networking, not expect to be able to print from devices on wireless network B to the printer now on wireless network A but I can. All devices are connecting wirelessly to my networks. The only wired link is from the Netgear to the TC which if disconnected stops the ability to print from devices on wireless network B to the printer on network A. It is as if the ethernet connection between the two routers is connecting the two wireless networks together. Bothe wireless networks have a different SSID and different types of security and passwords. Is this normal behaviour? Am I missing something obvious?
    Thanks for any help offered.

Sorry I have to copy and paste to just read your reply now.. stupid site.
If I understand you correctly in effect the TC is a client of the Netgear router so is just another access point on the Network. Rather than connecting to the Netgear via a wireless connection, it is connected with an Ethernet cable and receives an IP address from the Netgear like any other device. Although the Netgear and TC create 2 different wireless networks/ access points it is actually just one network?
Yes, all just one big happy network now.
Any idea why my printer has started disconnecting/ reconnecting approx every 5 mins from the TC wireless network? This has only just started in the last couple of months and does not appear to happen when the printer is connected via the Netgear wireless network connection.
I think you mentioned in your first post a suspicion about the latest firmware.. it is really poor.. downgrade to 7.6.1 and I think it will work better.
But also remember HP is a PC company.. have you setup your TC with all nice SMB names.. short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.. not nasty apple names with horrible worms.. like these, '  and spaces..
Also too much auto .. fix and lock everything down.. mode, channels, etc.
Another question you might be able to help with. Would it make any difference, good or bad, if I just used the Netgear as a modem and let the TC do all the routing functions?
The Netgear must be able to be bridged and the TC has to be able to get authentication.. I am not sure if this is adsl or cable.. but if adsl and your ISP uses pppoe then yes it is possible and routing with the TC is ok.. no better than the Netgear though.. and worse .. much worse if you have PC or games consoles. All of which want upnp which TC cannot supply.

  • Apple itunes installed network adapter and wiped my wireless out

On Windows Vista x64, I tried to take the update for itunes and it said it failed, to try download only (which has not been working either for me over past year; I always have to uninstall and go to the site to download/install it myself).  But my internet stopped working 5 days ago (my wireless adapter inside laptop cannot find any networks ever; nor did my ethernet connection work to overcome this) and my first line of defense was to use sys restore; low and behold, there was an entry for the time period it stopped working that "apple network adapter installed" but no matter which restore point I tried to use anywhere around that event, it always came back with errors and stated no changes were made; still no internet either.
I have uninstalled the hardware thru device manager and tried to let windows reinstall it with drivers, but that doesn't fix it either.  I even downloaded onto a flash drive the original driver that has since been updated by Intel for my Intel Link 5100 wireless adapter, but still it will not work.  The ethernet did start working once I installed the old original driver for it, but even last night I got the error while plugged into my router "limited connectivity" meaning no internet. I then tried uninstalling all apple programs and kept being blocked from doing so (sounded viral to me so I ran norton power eraser, spoke with support, even used couple other programs for spyware malware bootkit/rootkit etc).  Now I finally got all the programs uninstalled, cleaned the registry, and still I cannot get the wireless adapter to work.
I have spent days on this issue, seeing other discussions over the past few years where this has happened before (an update with apple's network adapter installs and wipes out the actual hardware adapter) but each time it only affects certain models of wireless/ethernet adapters.  Guess this update got mine.  I am trying NOT to have to restore my computer to factory condition as it is over 2 years old and that will mean millions of updates to all microsoft programs, drivers, etc.
Does anyone have any ideas that will fix this?  I can send you my specs if you need them.
    Sheila

Thx for the suggestion, but this is the post I originally found and figured out what went wrong, However, as I stated in my question post, I have not only uninstalled, scanned for hardware changes (w/o reboot) and rebooted and watched windows install device drivers for both lan & wifi, yet the wifi absolutely will not work now.  I have the ethernet working since installing the old original driver, and today I was able to actually get back up to the last wifi driver from intel I had before itunes wiped it out.  But still no wifi.  My intel program and intel's system checker I used on their website states:
    WIRELESS NETWORKING INFORMATION
    Wireless Networking Product
    Intel® WiFi Link 5100
    Driver Version
    13.4.0.9
    Intel PROSet/Wireless Version
    not detected
    Software/Driver Status
    Newer Driver Available
    Latest version available
    13.5.0
    Hardware IDs
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_4232&SUBSYS_12018086&REV_00
and I can't get the Newer driver to install without errors stating it will not work with my ACer setup.  But at least I got from v12.0.0.73 today to the one above.  I reinstalled Itunes today hoping that would fix anything I'd removed and the version was like 10.3.x.x.x.  Then I uninstalled from device manager & rebooted hoping wifi network adapter would start working again, but alas, no..
Hope someone can help me soon, cause I've run out of ideas.

Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
I suspect a problem with your router. Try changing the security. First use no security as a test.
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Apple USB-to-Ethernet, OS 10.5.4 and a MBAir. Having Issues

Ever since updating to 10.5.4 on the MBAir, my adjacent Windows XP system has been looking connectivity. Basicly it is consently telling me that the Ethernet cord has been disconnected.
I mention the Apple USB-to-Ethernet because once I unplug it from the MBAir, the issue goes away on the WinXP box.
Also, the network connection with the MBAir has been 'flaky' using the Apple USB-to-Ethernet; so 'flaky' behavior when going wireless.
Wondering if others have experienced anything remotely similar to this. Wondering if maybe its a faulty Apple USB-to-Ethernet.
    Any comments are welcome.

If the drive is new then it isn't prepped for the Mac. You should do the following:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • New Apple TV and wireless Connection Question?

My son lives in Russia and works for the State Dept. He want an Apple TV. The problem is that he is not tech savvy. Does the Apple TV need to connect wired or wireless to the router or just to the laptop to stream. He has a wireless connection for the laptop but if he has to go through set up and connect it to a router, I will never be able to walk him through it from 10,000 miles away. I have the old Apple tv and have it connected to the router with a wired connection. But I guess my IMAC synchs with the old Apple TV to send programs whether it is hardwired to a router or not. I hope this makes sense.

New AppleTv will connect via ethernet or wi-fi as before.
You could more than likely just connect it directly to the laptop with ethernet to stream locally stored content, but you'd need to set up some kind of internet sharing for it to access any internet or itunes store features.
AppleTV could also be set to work with an ad hoc wireless network from laptop but again internet connection would have to be shared over this, and it might be a bit fiddly too if router setup is going to be fiddly.
Simplest would be to connect both to router with ethernet. Have you considered mains powerline ethernet adapters if running cables is impractical?

  • Can I have a wireless and ethernet network?

I want to have a wireless and hardwired/ethernet network in my house. I want to be able to leave one comouter (an eMac that I do most of my work from) connected to the internet via ethernet cable, and then have the Airport Extreme send out the wireless signal (to the laptops, G4PowerBook & MacBook, we also use in the house).
Right now I use my eMac as to send out the wirelss signal, but that required having the eMac on and connected to the internet to then be able to use the internet on our laptops. I hoped that getting an Airport would elimiate having to have the eMac on all the time.
I bought an Airport Extreme at an Apple Store (in Toronto) and the told me that all I needed to do was have the internet going in to the Airport fromthe modem, and then have the ethernet cable coming out from the Airport and to my eMac.
I set it up this way and while the Airport does send out signal to our laptops fine, the eMac does not get any signel from the ethernet cable.
I can't seem to find any information saying that this set up can actually be done. I find a lot of informetion saying that the ethernet-out port on the airport is for things like printers, and not for internet signal.
So, despite what I was told in the Apple Store, can this sort of set up be done? If so, what am I doing wrong?
    -Greg

    Greg,
Yes, you can do what you describe.
The airport extreme base station has two ethernet ports in the rear.
One is for the WAN port were you connect your modem and the other one is for the LAN port where you connect your computer (or hub, etc.)
Plug in your Airport Extreme like mentioned above. You will have to configure it for the Internet and to Distribute IP Addresses if you Internet Modem is NOT a router.
Then setup your computer via the Ethernet cable and Ethernet connection in your System Preferences > Network > Ethernet ...
Set your Airport connection or Ethernet connection on your eMac to DHCP....
Your Airport Extreme should then assign you an IP address, etc., and you should be able to access the Internet at that point.
    Give that a try.
