Apple TV and projector 2.35:1

Hi,
I'm about to build a house and I wan't a home theater (projector and a big screen). I just don't know the aspect ratio of the screen. I would prefer 2.35:1 because I watch mostly the movies. However, I'm not sure how the Apple TV works. I have Apple TV 2 (of course when I'll be building the house, I will buy the newest one) connected to my TV (16:9) and it works well, but If I buy projector 2.35:1 instead of 16:9, will it work? Is the user menu of Apple TV set for 16:9 or will it change the resolution to fit wider screen? If it not, how are the movies from iTunes broadcasted? If the movie is in 2.35:1 will the Apple TV stream it in that format or in 16:9 with black bars at the bottom and top of the picture?

I own a Barbers where we have an apple tv set up with a projector (through HDMI). It would probably be a good point to say this is attached to the ceiling
As we're trying to take things to the next level, i was wanting to provide over-ear headphones on the waiting area for people to listen to whatever is playing on the screen.
Currently, i have tried a 20m long audio jack (connected to the projector and a headphone splitter) which dulls the sound dramatically to the point of it being unlistenable. I have heard of splitters with amplifiers to boost the sound but i was wondering if there was another way?
As apple TV uses airplay i have tried to research into this with little to no luck. As we are a fairly new business i'm trying to keep costs low.
The guy from apple advised to buy sonos PLAY1 and said that these work with air play (which wasn't true so i had to send this back, later finding that only the sonos bar works with airplay)
I like to think of myself as fairly tech savvy but this is starting to get out of my league. Is there any fairly simple solution to achieve multiple headphones that'll recieve the same sound without loosing too much volume?

Problem using iPad mirroring with an Apple TV and 4:3 Projector

I'm a teacher and I've been using my iPad 2 in the classroom for about a year and a half. I would use Apple's VGA Adapter to connect to my projector, which worked fine. I just didn't like being tied down, and the dock connector would come loose very easily and lose connection to the projector, which interrupted the flow of the lesson.
So this summer, I got an Apple TV and a projector with an HDMI port so I could start using Airplay Mirroring to get the iPad screen onto the projector. But I'm having trouble with the aspect ratio. Forgive my drawing, but the genius at the Apple store had a hard time understanding my explanation, so I'm hoping this will help show what I mean.
My projector (ViewSonic DLP PJD5133) can be set to either a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio (4:3, 800x600 is the native resolution). My projector screen in the front of the classroom is 4:3, so when the projector is set to 4:3, the image fills up the screen (which is what I want - it needs to be as big as possible so the entire class can see it clearly; plus it means all the output pixels are being used). When the projector is set to 16:9, the image is letterboxed (not ideal unless I'm showing a widescreen video or image).
The Apple TV's native aspect ratio is widescreen, and the iPad's native aspect ratio is 4:3, so if you use Airplay mirroring on a widescreen TV, the Apple TV will pillarbox the image (add horizontal black bars on each side), so that the image will not be stretched/distorted. (I know that it will show widescreen videos and a few widescreen-ready apps without the pillarbox, but the apps I use in class - Keynote, Noteshelf, etc. - don't fall in that category). The effect on my projector screen is a tiny 4:3 image taking up half the area it would have taken if I had used the VGA connection.
So in the Apple TV, I went to Settings>Audio & Video>TV resolution, and chose 800x600 60Hz (the max 4:3 resolution for my projector). Since the Apple TV is natively widescreen, it seems to accomplish this change be stretching the image vertically; but it basically works because the Apple TV home screen fills up the projector screen. However, when I turn on Airplay Mirroring on my iPad, the image does not fill up the screen. The Apple TV still puts a pillarbox on the image, so I end up with a distorted, square image of my iPad screen. It's the right height - the max 600 pixels for my projector - but it's not as wide as it should/could be.
Is there a setting that I'm missing? I understand that the Apple TV has to stretch its home screen image to accommodate the 4:3 resolution, but I think it should be smart enough to realize that if it's receiving a 4:3 image from the iPad and sending it out to a 4:3 TV, it doesn't need to pillarbox the image.
Before you answer - this is not a problem with the projector settings, and my Apple TV is not defective. You could simulate what's happening on your Apple TV, even if it's hooked up to a widescreen TV. In the Apple TV settings, change the TV Resolution to 800x600 as mentioned above (or any other of the 4:3 options). Now go to the Apple TV home screen, and note the amount of space the image is taking up on your screen (on a widescreen TV, it will be pillarboxed, and it will look like it's been squished horizontally). Then turn on Airplay mirroring on the iPad, and you'll see that the iPad image does not have the same width as the Apple TV home screen and it looks square/squished.
Also, while my projector does have a zoom function, it will not magnify the small iPad mirror image correctly (if I were to leave the Apple TV and projector on a 16:9 setting). It cuts off the top and sides. But even if it didn't crop the image, it's a digital zoom, so that option still won't fix the fact that I'm not getting a full 800x600 image on the projector. The same problem would apply if I were to move the projector farther away from the screen (so that the widescreen image takes up the full height of the projector screen, while spilling off the sides). I'll still have a lower resolution image, which isn't ideal since I'm often showing text on the screen through Keynote. Also, widescreen videos wouldn't fit on the screen, and I can't move the projector easily because it's fixed to the ceiling.
Sorry for the long explanation. Any ideas? I'd really appreciate some insight.

We have the same problem, and not only with ipads. Macbook Air is doing something similar. it can only use airplay with 1080 and 720 resolution, so the image is squeezed on a 4:3 projector. We use AppleTV 3 and Mountain Lion OS. We use ATVPRO from Kanex.
Apple must get its act together and fix this, they promise gold and green forests, but nothing works.

How do I connect Apple TV and surround sound to my projector?

My current set up is that I have a projector connected to my Blu-Ray player. My surround sound speakers connect to my Blu-Ray player. They all came in the box together and the speaker wires all go into the Blu-Ray. Everything works perfectly.
However now I have bought an Apple TV and although I can play it through the projector, the sound is only through the projector and not the surround sound. I tried plugging the Apple TV in the HDMI in the projector and then connecting the Apple TV to the Blu-Ray via optical cable, but that didn't work.

Yes, HDMI is the only supported method. Also, with converters you will run into issues with HDCP (which will prevent you from streaming DRM content from iTunes etc) as well as resolution.

It can use Apple Tv, but will require a wireless network as well. The Apple TV has an HDMI output, and depending on the projector it may connect directly to it through HDMI.
There are adpaters out there that will convert from HDMI to several other types such as VGA or Composite oir RGB. It would not be directly an Apple product as it would work with the HDMI cable rather than the apple TV or iPad directly.
Basically your setup should be:
iPad -> Wifi Network -> Apple TV-- HDMI Cable-->Adapter---->Projector
If the iPad is iPad 2 or above you can mirror the entire display to the projector through the apple Tv.

With that said there are projectors that can be used wirelessly from the ipad without the need for Apple Tv or any adapter.

Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.

How to connect Apple TV to Projector with no HDMI

I have a projector with S-video, rca, and vga connections but no HDMI. I would like to get an apple tv and use airplay with my ipad 2. Are there hdmi to rca or vga converters that will work well with Apple TV. I've searched different things but it's just confusing me.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
There are hardware converters that will convert HDMI to various other types of output, however there are some issues with doing so that you should be aware of.
HDCP
HDCP compliant converters will not allow you to watch HDCP protected content such as that from the iTunes Store. Non compliant converters exist but we cannot discuss them under the Terms of Use for these communities.
Resolution and aspect ratio
I'm not aware of any converters that will scale the output from the Apple TV, any TV or projectoe which is used will need to be widescreen and support resolutions of 720p or 480p.

You don't. Mirroring is duplicating your ipad screen on another projector - so you can't have another app going on your iPad without it also showing up on the projected image. Some apps are designed so that you see a different image in the iPad than the mirrored out display, but even then you're within the app itself.

Problem connecting Apple TV2 to projector when passing through Sony Sound Bar

I'm having problems getting my Apple TV2 to work now that I'm passing it through my new Sony HT-CT150 Sound Bar to my Epson Megaplex Projector MG-850 (720p) Projector. I keep getting a "Not Supported" error on my projector - as opposed to a "No Signal" error which is what happens if I was to unplug the Apple TV.
My HDMI cables are all new and latest specs. I can connect the Apple TV directly to projector with either cable and it works fine. I have a 6 ft HDMI connecting the Apple TV to one of the Sony Sound Bar's 3 HDMI inputs and then a 40 ft. HDMI running from the sound bar's HDMI out to the projector's single HDMI input. Oddly, if I reverse the cables, it seems to work. Same two cables - just switching which one is connected to the Apple TV and which is connected to the projector. (I need the length to get to where my projector is positioned. Though I might be able to get by with a 30 ft. cable if length might be the issue.)
Anyway I think it must have something to do with the HDMI handshake or the lenth of the cables but don't know enough about it and have no idea why switching which cable comes first would fix the problem.

Ok, I will ask the question in another way... My apple tv has one hdmi, and it goes to my hd projecter.. But projecter has no speakers, and as a result I've no sound at the moment. I am looking for a clear direction to go in, to solve lack the of any sound.. My only option seems to be, using the optical out from the apple tv.. I don't have any equipment with this conecter. And I've never used optical before.. If i buy an, optical to twin phono converter and then I can plug into a large powered speaker I've got in my living room. And I will have big sound easily..?? Do I have any other reasonable options for optical enabled speakers, or AirPlay speakers or something simple I'm not aware of that will give me sound easily.. I don't want a messy 5:1 system, my house is very tidy, and I want to keep it that way. . Only having this optical out is frustrating, and I need to get my head round the options I have. Anyone understand from experience how to use the optical apple tv out. Also, not using anything but apple tv, no dvds, or tv , just apple tv and my ipad.. Is very quiet in my home right now though. No, but it's not recent. It's somewhat old like maybe a decade old? There are no HDMI for sure. It's VGA, composite, S-Video, regular audio, etc.

AppleTV 1 used to be able to output its audio to an Express AppleTV cannot.

No audio on apple tv via projector

So I plug in my apple tv to my home tv, Via hdmi cable, I get audio & video fine from ipad. I plug the same apple tv, using the same hdmi cable, same router and same ipad into projector at church, and I can only get video. Projector is supposed to have internal speakers (thought I've never managed to get them to work) but as soon as I try and plug in the audio cable to connect to external speakers, airplay disconnects!
What is going on, can I have video to apple tv and sound (I had to go with just sound for that particular service) and if so how? If not, do I have to buy airport express or whatever to have sound and apple tv?

It is not possible to output audio from the headphone jack on an iDevice and video via AirPlay at the same time.
Connect the ATV via Optical Cable to the external speakers.
