Apple TV and Sky HD

Hi guys,
I was just wondering, is apple tv compatible with sky hd i.e. are you able to plug a sky HD cable in the back and watch hd tv through apple tv on your telebox?

AppleTV is not a satellite decoder or terrestrial digital decoder.
It's a 'media extender' that lets you play things you have in iTunes via your TV (for video this assumes a fairly strict compatibility with what AppleTv can play).
You could plug a Sky feed into any number of non-Sky satellite boxes to watch free to air channels. With a HD capable box you could watch any free HD feeds but having bought a Freesat HD box a few weeks ago just to get a bit of HD feed for my plasma I have to say that the BBC HD service which is all that's effectively available at present (unless you want a high def luxury shopping channel) is not up to much at only about 4 hours of content per day, most of which is of no interest to me.
What we really need in the UK is for the SD broadcasts to be transmitted at decent bitrates - the BBC HD feed is downconverted to view via SCART on my Humax box and the downconverted SD picture is vastly better than the SD broadcasts.
We are getting awful SD digital transmissions that are nowhere near the quality of the SD source material available.

Is it possible to download a film using Sky By Broadband to my laptop and view it on my TV using Apple TV?

Is it possible to download a film using Sky By Broadband to my laptop and view it on my TV using Apple TV?
    The answer is no.
Sky by Broadband uses Windows Media Player DRM which has never been supported on the Mac even before Microsoft discontinued Windows Media Player. It also uses the Kontiki peer-to-peer system for actually transferring (downloading) the files. This also as far as I am aware has never been ported to the Mac.
Even if you use a real PC or Boot Camp to successfully get the files on to a computer, because of the DRM you cannot copy, save, convert or do anything to them.
Unfortunately, the morons at the BBC (iPlayer), and Channel 4 (4oD) have chosen to use the exact same ghastly software.
Currently the BBC iPlayer is Windows only (because it is using Windows Media Player DRM and Kontiki peer-to-peer) but the BBC Trust have told the BBC they must provide a Mac solution (and Linux). While no timescale has been set (the BBC are not going to rush in to it until they can find an equally ghastly DRM solution for Mac), my guess would be one of the three following possibilities
    1. Microsoft Silverlight. A version (playback only) of this complete with new equally ghastly DRM has been released by Microsoft for Mac (as a token gesture).
    2. Adobe Media Player is an expansion of Flash with its own DRM and like Flash should be available for both Mac and Windows.
    3. Real Player. Apparently even on a Mac Real do support using their own DRM, however so few people use Real Player (on a Mac) I have never some across an example of this.
Unfortunately because of the DRM all three of the above are infested with, none of them can be used with QuickTime, iTunes, iPod, iPhone, or AppleTV.
When are these idiots going to realise like the far more intelligent Steve Jobs that
    i. DRM only inconveniences legal customers and not pirates
ii. DRM (including that in Windows Media Player, HD-DVD, and Blu-Ray), can be broken, indeed already has been broken, and always will be broken.
Note: I have installed and looked at Sky by Broadband, but it was such an unpleasant experience, with such a poor selection of programmes that I have not actually bothered to download a single programme using it.

  • Apple Mac and Sky Hub

Hello, I've got a very old iMac it's probably around 15 years old and runs OS X 10.4.11
Just bought a Sky Wireless Hub but it seems my old imac isn't wireless enabled. Can someone please assist me and tell me if it's wireless enabled, if not how can I make it? Even if I need to buy an attachment of some sort and explain in clear English as I'm not very technical! Appreciate any help, thanks.

    I take it we're talking about the coloured/transparent model;
This is a PPC G3, so I'll get the post moved to the correct forum in a moment.
These models didn't come with wifi as standard, indeed the earliest ones didn't even have a slot for a card.
I would normally suggest an Airport Express base station connected to the ethernet port to use as an access point, but the AEs currently available have to be set up with a version of Airport Utility which won't run on your model
Other choices are third party wi-fi bridges or USB wi-fi dongles (but finding a compatible one may be difficult)
There should be several threads on the subject (G3 wireless) so do a forum search, too.

  • Can I link apple tv and watch sky as a sky subscriber?

    Hi All
I am thinking of purchasing an Apple TV as a colleague seems to think I can link this to the TV in the bedroom and watch Sky.  I am a Sky subscriber but I am of the opinion that this would stop multiroom subscriptions if we could all do this.  Can someone please advise.
    Many thanks

    Welcome to the Apple community.
    Short answer, no.
Sky subscribers though are entitled to the sky app for iPad and iPhone for free, when iOS5 is released you should then be able to mirror the iOS display via your Apple TV and watch on your TV.

  • We have bought an Apple TV, and have downloaded the sky sports app. We are trying to watch this via airplay, but we are only managing to get the sound, not the picture. Any ideas??

Sky do not allow the app to work with Airplay. You will only get sound.

  • How can I get all the stuff from my old iPad 2 to my new iPad 2? I have an apple id and have synced and backed up my old iPad 2 regularly.

How can I get all the stuff from my old iPad 2 to my new iPad 2? I have an apple id and have synced and backed up my old iPad 2 regularly.

Sky is right you can restore the old backup and it will not affect the old iPad
    To make sure do this:
    1. If you have the old one then just turn off wi-fi and the iPad (that's just for your peace of mind)
    2. Put new iPad on airplane mode (just for no interruptions )
    3. Connect it (while it's on, don't shut it down)
    4. Follow prompts and when it asks if you want to setup as new or restore CHOOSE: RESTORE
    5. It will make its magic (just wait for it to sync, restarts, and finishes) it might ask you to update software if it does just accept
    6. You can rename your new iPad like that you can have a fresh back up
    7. ENJOY your new iPad
    ----------OR-----------
    1. Do the above steps 1, 2, 3.
    2. On step 4 you can choose to set up as new
    3. Then you can choose what to sync on it (click on iPad on the left panel then the tabs on top you choose what you want on it (you can also do that if you restore)
    4. Follow steps 5, 6, 7.
****If you don't have your old iPad you can remove it from your account ****
****Also when they sync it to a new computer it will setup as new unless they had an old one then they will restore it their old one****
****if you have it connected with your MobileMe or iCloud and you have the find my _____ you can also wipe it as soon as it comes online****
LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS
    AGAIN ENJOY YOUR NEW IPAD!!!

  • I found My iPhone contacts on my friends Iphone we both have 4s! But we use the same apple ID and ICloud ID! How can undo what happened? all my private stuff is now on his phone!!! help me plz!!?

I found My iPhone contacts on my friends Iphone we both have 4s! But we use the same apple ID and ICloud ID! How can undo what happened? all my private stuff is now on his phone!!! help me plz!!?

Of course if you are both connected to the same iCloud account you have the same contacts - what did you expect?. The contacts live on the server and are read from there by the devices; so as you've both managed to sync your contacts up to iCloud they are now inextricably mixed. You can only delete your contacts by deleting individual ones, and doing that will delete them from your phone as well.
You can only unravel this by
    1. In the iCloud contacts page at http://icloud.com, select all the contacts, click on the cogwheel icon at bottom left and choose 'Export vCard'.
    2. Sign out of System Preferences>iCloud
    3. Create a new Apple ID and open a new iCloud account with it for your own use.
    4. Import the vCard back into the iCloud contacts page.
    5. Go to http://icloud.com and sign in with the original ID. This is now his ID. Work through the contacts individually deleting the ones you don't want him to have. When done sign out and advise him to change his password.
    6. Go to the new iCloud account and delete his contacts individually.
Of course if you have also been syncing calendars and using the same email address there are problems with doing this.

It is not possible to create a new iCloud account using a Windows machine. You must create the account using a Mac (10.7.5 or more) or an IOS device (iPhone etc). Once that is done you can sign into and use the account on your Windows machine.

  • How can I reset my IPAD 2 to resolve the fact that Apple will not let me use the APPLE  ID and passwords that I want to use becasue they may have been used in the past year. I am very close to donating this contraption to the Good Will.

I have been an Apple User for almost two decades and have had no problems with my G4 Powerbook, my Intel MacMini, nor several other Macs as well as Windows 7 machines. However, the IPAD2 poses a problem of unfathomable disgust with the concept and implementation of the Apple ID. There is one for the computer, there is one for support, and there is one for itunes, and possibly another one for apps. There are different passwords for each. I am continually faced with notification that my Apple ID is incorrect or the password is incorrect. I have to keep an Excel spreadsheet with all of this unnecessary NANNY State protection matched only in pervasiveness by the Federal government.
I am told that an Apple ID can never be destroyed and replaced. Who dreamed that one up? I am told I cannot use a password that has been used in the past year. Why? By whose authority? I am not a walking encyclopedia that remembers every telephone number he ever dialed. Thankfully my cheap LG clamshell telephone keeps numbers and talks to Ford Sync successfully.
Bottom line is that the IPAD has become almost totally useless since I cannot change the several necessary passwords to anything I can remember because they are not novel enough. I also never seem to be able to keep the Apple IDs straight as they are too numerous to remember and I don't want to remember them anyway. Why? Even if you enventually get the ID right you have the wrong password and have to go through a merry-go-round of emails to change the password to something you have already used in the past year which is not permitted.
Has anyone out there used a competitive device with less cumberson overhead? Surely this is not the best American technology can produce.
    Thanks for your comments.

Thanks to all who responded. You are all absolutely correct. However, this Ipad was a gift to my wife who was dying of cancer in the hospital and wanted some entertainment. So I started it out with her Apple ID. After she passed away I moved from Sacramento to Austin and eventually proceeded to get the Apple ID changed from my wife's to mine. Meanwhile when she was in the hospital I opened an Itunes account in my name to buy movies for her. That was the first mistake.
Then during the move to Austin I lost track of the IPAD and later found it and tried to use support but could not remember the proper ID. Later the folks at the Apple store helped me create a new and novel Apple ID that was unfortunately unlike any other.
The botom line is that I am stuck with three Apple IDs and three passwords. I am told by Apple there is nothing they can do about this as IDs cannot be changed or destroyed. I can quit using them or start a new account but when I try to do that the system keeps remembering too many things from the past and resists.
Even if I sold this Ipad and bought a new one, the system memory is still there.
I think the real problem is that destop and laptop computers are totally owned by an individual and that individual can control logins and passwords to his liking. IPADs and similar Apple products are different in that the corporation has built in their own intrusion detection schemes because of the relation to Itunes.
One thing I thought about is to open a new Itunes account pretendding to be a new customer with my regular Apple ID. Perhaps I could do the same with Apple Support.
    Thanks for your comments.

  • HT2534 I have three Apple IDs and would like to combine them all into one, can I do that and how?

When I started buying Apple products I did not realize how important it was to keep the same Apple ID and Password for all of the device.  As a result I have four Apple ID's.  I would like to only have one Apple ID for all my devices.  Is this possible and what do I ave to do to make it happen?  I appreciate any help you might be able to give me.  Thanks

It's not currently possible to merge accounts, nor to transfer content from account to another account - content will remain tied to the account that originally bought/downloaded it.

Not going to happen the way you want it to.
When you add a gift card balance to the Apple ID, it's available for the Apple ID.
Probably best to create unique Apple ID's for each... this will also make things easier in the future as purchases are eternally tied to the Apple ID they were purchased with.

  • How can I change the old Apple ID, and i want to use my new Apple ID, i dont know the password because my phone is a gift for me of my sister what should i do, i cant update my iphone4 pls help me

How can i use my new Apple ID, instead of using the old Apple ID what will i do to delete the old Apple ID in my phone

  • I have two Apple IDs, and this is causing problems with syncing via iCloud. How do I move everything to one ID? All advice is for setting up, not for after it's already set up.

My problem is that I have been a Mobile Me user for the past couple of years, and because of that a second Apple ID was generated in addition to the one I've been using for years. When iCloud was introduced last fall I did everything I was supposed to in setting it up, but it is evident that the syncing is not working as it should. In checking, I am certain this is because I now have two active Apple IDs. I would assume this is a common issue with all who were/are Mobile Me users.
The online help says you can't merge two IDs. Okay. What I want to do is to get rid of the Moble Me ID and only use my regular Apple ID. But the help on that issue seems to only give instructions for setting up the iCloud account. It seems that when I go into my iCloud accounts, both on my iPhone and my Mac, I can view the ID but there is no way to change them to another ID or to eliminate the account.
Please help. I am a long-time Apple user and this really should be a fairly simple matter to take care of, but this is one issue where the normally user-friendly Apple way of life is giving me fits. Thanks.

I am logged into the same things on both my iPhone and my MacBook Pro, except for mail. I use a gmail IMAP account and everything there already works on both machines. The iCloud account on my iPhone uses one Apple ID and the one on the Mac uses the second Apple ID.
