Apple TV and USB Hard Drive

Looking at Apple TV (ATV), and noting that it has a USB 2.0 port: Can you increase storage of ATV by adding a USB external hard drive and if so is the external hard drive the equivalent of a larger internal hard drive? The price difference in the 40GB and 160GB ATV is greater than the price of a quality 500GB external USB 2.0 drive.
I also wish ATV would allow you to use ATV as a PC internet browser and your TV as a monitor to display more than just youtube video. ATV could make inroads into cable TV suitable sub for browser video--at least for those of us who do not want 200 channels of junk from cable/dish.--Ah, there are things yet to be developed.

Does Applecore LLC's product, aTV Flash v.3.2 allow you to both add external USB functionality such as an external hard drive and allow web surfing via internet browser within Apple TV--that is install a browser on ATV and browse on AppleTV using your high def TV as the monitor?
If so it is just what I am looking for.
as that product is essentially "hacking" the appletv, you would probably be best discussing that elsewhere (like whoever it is that makes this hack). as this is an official apple support forum it is against the Ts&Cs to discuss hacking or modifying.

  • Read/Write speeds with Airport Extreme and USB Hard Drives

Anybody know how fast the read/write speeds are with a USB hard drive and the Airport Extreme Base Station?
    My Setup
    I have a 17 MBP (2010) and a 13 MBP (2011) - no SSD's
MBP generally connect via 802.11n 5Ghz with a very strong signal
Gigabit connection on a Windows Desktop
    I have a variety of external drives (7200, 5400, Drobo) at varying capacity (320GB, 2TB, 5.6TB)
    Goals
    Backup: Time machine
Backup: File copies of pictures and home videos (greater than 1GB files)
    Backup: Crashplan
File sharing: Aperture libraries--not sure if that is possible or practical. That is something that I need to research further...but on the off chance people have experience with it.
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Apple's AirPort base stations aren't known for fast file serving, but for most purposed they're fast enough.
I can't comment specifically on your Aperture plan, but with some software it's important to avoid simultaneous access by more than one user.

  • Backup a dual boot iMac with OSX + Vista to Time capsule and USB hard drive

I have just bought a Time Capsule which is now working as my WiFi Network base station and backs up an iMac and a Macbook. The iMac has both OSX and Vista (using Boot Camp) and I was using a USB Hard Drive that has 2 partitions (HFS+ for the Mac; NTFS for Vista) to back up the iMac. Rather than leave this attached to the iMac just to back up the Vista partition I would like to move it to the Time Capsule's USB port and use it as NAS. The idea being that it becomes a NAS with one partition used to back up the Windows data when I run the iMac with Vista and the other partition to archive the Time Machine backups from both the iMac and Macbook. I tried to connect it as it was but got an error and reading the forum it seems that it won't work unless both partitions are HFS+ or FAT. If I reformat the NTFS partition to HFS+ will I be able to use the built in backup function of Vista to back up the Vista partition to the USB hard drive? I read somewhere else that Time Capsule takes care of the formatting for an external NAS drive and Windows will be able to read and write to it even though it's not NTFS. Any ideas comments appreciated.

This is crude but if you need a work around, just plug the USB drive directly into the iMac.. copy the files to it.. then plug it into the TC.
You also do not need to use the TC as an intermediary between your iMac and MBP.. just turn on sharing in the computer.. so you can directly copy files from one to the other.. Macs have public access directory preconfigured for each user account.
As far as mounting the TC..
In finder use Go, Connect to server.. and type.
    AFP://TCname or TCipaddress
Where TCname is the actual name of the TC.. I strongly recommend you follow SMB network rules.. ie if your TC has a name like
    Fred Blog's Time Capsule 2445566.
It is too long.. it has spaces and it has non-alphanumeric characters.
    Shorten it to FredTC
No spaces no characters that are NOT alphanumeric.
TCIPaddress is simply the standard IP.
You can also use CIFS://TCname which according to the article forces the connection back to SMB1 rather than SMB2 which as usual is broken.
But I would definitely use AFP if possible. I cannot understand the decision to move to SMB as standard.

  • Printer and USB hard drive are not detected by TC

Two dys ago I got me TC, I added it to my existing WLAN and startet the initial time machine backup.
Worked fine. I was also able to connect a Windows-Notebook to the TC, using it as an network share.
But I can not see a USB printer (HP PSC 2110) or a USB hard drive, I plugged into the TC.
Even if the printer might not be supported the hard drive should be visible in the air port utility. But there is no furter hard drive listed...
(The hard drive is my former time machine hard drive, OS Extended.)

Use an USB hub with its own power supply. The limitations on the base station's USB port, aside from the fact that it only has one, will still apply.

  • Time Capsule, Apple TV, and External Hard Drive

I currently have a Macbook with OS X 10.4, and an external 250GB hard drive. I want to purchase Leopard OS X, Time Capsule, and Apple TV. My goal is to copy my music, movies, and pictures onto the Apple TV for viewing on my tv. I also would like to store my music, pictures, and documents on the Time Capsule for the default location, due to storage space. I have more files than I have room on my Macbook. I don't want to hook up the external hard drive every time I use my computer. I would like to access it all wirelessly. My question is will this work ok and can I read my files off of the Time Capsule without delay to where the music, movies, and photos won't play or view without a glitch. Also am I purchasing something I don't need. The main goal is to store the files on an external device in order to gain space on my Macbook and not have to hook up the external hard drive every time. Thanks for the help!!

Hello, seems like you wanted to do pretty much what i wanted to do. that is free up space on lap top. But still have instant access to your itunes stuff. I found a solution that works for me.
I have a portable WD hdd attached to my time capsule via usb, i then access both through the capsules wireless connection, using the TC for time machine.
The Apple tv then accesses my itunes lib through my MBP via TC's wireless. I did however connect the WD Hdd directly to my MBP for the initial transfer to the apple tv, but itunes seems to find the lib as long as its there, doesnt matter if its connected to MBPs usb or the TCs usb. Sometimes it might revert to the default location, but i've found that if you click on a song it still plays, then if you close then reopen itunes every thing goes back to your external hdd...
Which means if you go away or want your itunes lib on the move you just need a little WD hdd.
I'm not totally sure if its worked yet but i connected my WD hdd to my MBP vie usb and told the TC to back up that too by going to options in TM preferences, seems to have worked, not sure if it would work while connected to the TC usb connection, doesnt seem to.
NB:Before you do this do a back up of everything in you Itunes Lib on your TC incase you screw up.
(For easy transfer of your itunes lib go to preferences on itunes and create a folder called iTunes Music on your Hdd then close preferences and allow itunes to do its thing, then in itunes go to
file - library - consolidate library, itunes. Itunes then makes a copy of all music on your new hdd. I then deleted the tunes off my MBP)
Just make sure you open your finder and click on the TC to wake the drive before you open Itunes other wise you'll have to go in to preferences and keep altering the location for your itunes folder. which can take i tunes a while.
This method seems to cope with video and music just fine.
Well hope that wasn't too confusing, as i confuse myself at times.
    Good Luck.........

  • 2nd gen Apple TV + External USB Hard Drive

My question is, Can i connect an external hard drive to the USB port of the AppleTV and play its content on TV?
    OR
If i had a Time Capsule and put all my Videos and TV shows on it, could I play those on the AppleTV via wifi?

    PooyaK wrote:
So if the USB port on the device cannot read USB connected devices, what good is it for?
Very little...except unofficial software modifications I suspect.
It's just sad to have an USB port and don't have the ability to connect thing to it...
Same problem with 1st Generation ATV.
With no onboard storage on AppleTV 2 it would be ideal if they enabled this to store your own content locally without having to run iTunes all the time.

  • Time Machine & Apple Recommended Iomega USB Hard Drive

When I upgraded to Lepoard I received an recommendation from Apple Store on a Iomega USB drive for use with Time Machine. Upon installation all worked fine, then I started to have problems with turning on my machine, had to unplug the power cord every time I wanted to start up. Thought the problem was software related and posted a question for help. Finally after trying all solutions posted, last one was unplug external hard drive and see if that helps. *It worked* my turn on problems went away. Now what I have a 500.00 hd that I can't use? Is there a fix out there?

Have you formated you external drive? See my posting in this thread 13 posts down from the top. Try formatting that way.

  • Airport Extreme AC (5th Gen) and USB Hard Drives

I just got a new iMac.
Previously I had three external hard drives chained together directly via firewire 800 on a Mac Mnin. In the old configuration, Time Machine backed up to one of HDs pretty quickly. Since the new iMac doesn't have firewire - I took those same hard drives - using their USB 2 connections and put them on a hub connected to Airport Extreme. I see them under shared drives and access is great - but the back up speed is not very fast. Is there a better way to connect these drives for the purposes of Time Machine backups? They are formated Mac OS exteneded, etc
    Thanks.

The confusing part to me was that the new Extreme has a USB2.0 spec?
    It is easier and cheaper.
USB3 spec causes 2.4ghz wireless issues.
    See http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2423604,00.asp
In a wireless router.. that aint good.. and some manufacturers have had issues.. Asus for example. Their USB3 are useless in several of the routers because they did not shield well enough.
Internally the AC version AE is same chipset as the Asus.. they could have used USB3 which is built in.. but I think went conservative and decided not to as they were faced with early release of hardware they didn't understand. And so they are still having issues with the basic hardware.. imagine throwing in USB3 wireless issues.
All of the above is total and utter speculation on my part. Apple are the most secretive company in the world.. they don't even own up to mistakes.. they never tell you what they are doing or why. No apple rep will say I am right or wrong.. total PR blackout.
But IMHO that is why you should have bought a Time Capsule which has a SATA interface inside.. and is very much faster than USB2. The cost increase is only what the hard disk costs.
No doubt gen7 or gen8 will suddenly come out with USB3. It always pays to keep some features up your sleeve even if the chipset manufacturer has them built in.

  • Apple tv2 and external hard drive

I have old videobands that I'm going to put it on an external hard drive, but how can I watch it then on the apple tv? Do I have to buy an time capsule to let ithe external haddrive synchronisize with the apple tv2. I want also to see my macbook air screen on my tv (wireless).
And my last question is how to work with ipad safari on a flashplayer site?

    In reverse order...
Best way to see Flash on your iPad is to download the iSwifter browser.
You, as of yet, can not stream your Mac to your ATV2. You can send audio and video to it if it's in iTunes or QuickTime 10.
No to the external drive, TimeCapsule options. Your external drive with the videos would need to be part of your iTunes library.

  • Use WRT350N and USB hard drive for backup

I intend to use a Western Digtal MY BOOK Essential Edition (500 GB USB external hard drive) with my WRT350N router for backing up my data every night.  Has anyone used this combination?  Can you tell me if there are any obstacles I should be aware of?  The backup software I will use is Genie Backup Manager.  I think I am going to need help in configuring the router to use the external hard drive.
    Thanks,
    poorolepaul

There were rumors floating around that the USB port in the 350N can not handle anything over 250Gb. Since the drive I used with the 350N was not that large I have no personal knowledge of whether that is true or not.
In any event, using the current firmware for the 350n (1.3.02) you can be assured that the USB will totally lock up about every day or two and the router and hard drive will have to be reset. Using the beta firmware that you can either request from Linksys or find available from someone on the Internet, that problem APPEARS to be fixed. The only problem is that a gigabit network connection will now lock up every day or two. That was my personal experience and what I have read by others.
My recommendation would be not to buy the 350N until they release firmware that fixes these problems otherwise you'll be as frustrated with the product as I am and others are.

  • Firewire and USB hard drives won't mount on Xserve - 10.5.8

I have a triple interface drive set for rotating backups, and they've stopped mounting on my Xserve. Disk Utility can't see them at all, but System Profiler sees when I plug them in. The drive specifics for the volume are missing, but they ID correctly. Same drives plugged into an iMac and a MacBook Pro mount perfectly every time, both over USB and Firewire. Disk Utility via the iMac shows no problems at all. I've tried rebooting the Xserve... doesn't help.
I kinda need my backup to run on my server. Thoughts on how to resolve?

Sounds like you should be posting to the Xserve forum.

If I do Need to completely reformat it using Disk Utility, will I lose my files on the disk now?
not if you move them to a temporary location before you start.
yes, you are better of formatting the drive with DU.

  • Disabling USB hard drives but allowing USB keys mounting, possible ?

    Hi all,
I have a tricky request from one of my customers : they would like to block any external hard drives (firewire and USB) from mounting on the Desktop, BUT would like to allow USB keys only.
All the clients are unmanaged (local accounts, NOT bound to an Open Directory Master server) and are running OS X 10.4.8 (Intel).
I found the easy way to prevent any Firewire device to show up.
I also found how to disable all USB devices (except for keyboard/mouse) : renaming /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext
Problem is, this method won't make any difference between a hard drive and a key, it will block it, period.
Is there any way to allow some (or all) USB keys only to mount ? My only guess would be to unload some extensions which are listed by the "kextstat" command.
That could only be possible if USB keys and USB hard drives don't use the same kind/brand of controller/bridge and therefore don't use the same kernel extension.
Does anyone have a clue on this ?
    Many thanks.

  • Uber-Noob Question about automounting USB hard drives

First, let me say I'm not just new to Arch, but new to Linux as well.  Been playing with it off & on for years, but mostly 'off'.  In the last 3 weeks I've installed 10-12 different distros between my 2 home PC's and VMware on my laptop.  I've installed Arch probably 5 times now, and have got the process down pretty good.  I've probably learned more about linux from installing and configuring Arch than any other distro, book, web site, etc.  So now I've got it up and running again in VMware on an Ubuntu 7.10 install on my old pc.  I've got gnome working, sound is fine, samba is fine, really no problems.  Except mounting USB drives.  I've read several posts here and the wiki, but nothing seems to be clear really.
I think it may be a problem in the VM environment, but I want to be sure.  I'm planning to replace my Sidux install on my main PC with Arch later today or tomorrow.  Assuming I get it installed, and get gnome installed, will the gnome volume manager work like it does in other distros?  I don't mind doing the config by hand, but I do a lot with USB flash drives and USB hard drives, and it seems like it just doesn't work very well in Arch.  I actually replaced my ubuntu install last week with Arch, but got tired of trying to access my music on my USB drive, never could get it to mount.  So I just re-installed Ubuntu (shame on me, I know).
So any help in getting some understanding in what needs to be done would be greatly appreciated.  (forgot to mention, I did follow the wiki steps for autofs, as well as the usb drive wiki stuff).
    Thanks.

it's all working fine now, the problem was in the VM.  I installed Arch on my main PC, and except for being an idiot, all went well.  My USB drives automount in gnome, as does my CD.  Haven't tried the ipods yet, but I'm sure there won't be a problem.  Key for me:  add my user to the storage group and reboot (logging off would of done the trick too I'm guessing).  Had the same problem with setting up X, needed to reboot and all was well.  Great distro, a helluva lot of fun to install and configure, and I've only done so little:)
