Apple TV auto sync inoperative since 2.3 update

I have an Apple TV setup with the following components (most all Apple pieces):
iMac G5 with Enet connection to
Time Capsule (router) with wireless connection to
Apple TV, a laptop PC, and iPod Touch
My software versions are: OS X 10.5.5, iTunes 8.0.2, Apple TV 2.3
I only use my Apple TV as a source for music and photos played on my A/V system. This has worked well for about a year. I had some time ago synced a sizable music collection and photos from my iMac to the ATV and have left it connected for auto sync ever since. When I added music or photos on the iMac, it would do incremental syncs to the ATV so that the new music and photos were then available on the ATV. Sometime, around the time of my installation of ATV 2.3 software, all syncing to the ATV stopped, even though the configuration of ATV still shows it set up for that. In addition, the ATV will not appear in the Device list in iTunes, except when I make a streaming connection. The ATV Main/Settings/Computers dialog shows the name of my iTunes library, with the sync icon (chain links), and an ATV icon. The library name text appears to be grayed. This dialog also shows “Add Shared iTunes Library >”. To troubleshoot the problem, I have used that function to raise the box that shows a passcode. I can go thru that procedure at the iMac and connect my iTunes library for streaming. The ATV dialog then addss my iTunes library name under “Add Shared iTunes Library >”, and is white text (not gray) and all streaming works perfectly. In that mode I can use the ATV to access the newer music and photos that are on the iMac and the ATV appears in the iTunes device list, but only for streaming (Summary & Photo tabs only).
I have not changed anything about this configuration for about a year, except for the download and installation of newer versions of software as they became available. All other aspects of wired and wireless networking are working perfectly. My Time Capsule router continues to share a DSL internet connection between my iMac and a PC. I can also establish a wireless connection with a Powerbook and with an iPod Touch (which I use as a remote for the ATV – but not for the problems and troubleshooting described here). Streaming between the iMac and the ATV works just fine as described above. I can also stream iTunes from the Powerbook to the ATV. I believe the evidence points to a failure to auto sync introduced with the installation of the ATV 2.3 software.
What I have tried:
1) Reset the ATV
2) Restart the iMac
3) Power down all hardware: iMac, Time Capsule, ATV, DSL modem
4) Set up a streaming connection – works fine, as described above, including access to internet radio
I have been very reluctant to disconnect the sync (which sounds like it deletes all the existing data on the ATV) and doing a new sync, since it will take a long time and seems very likely that it will not work and will only leave me with an empty ATV.
It seems that similar problems suspected to be the result of the 2.3 update have been reported on this forum. Any ideas on what to do next would be greatly appreciated.

I resolved this issue by disconnecting the existing sync and going through the whole sync process again. So far this is working as hoped.

  • Iphone 5c will not auto import photos since its recent update help!!

I've just recently updated software on my iphone and it will not import photo's automatically as it used to.  I can still use itunes and the phone backs up and syncs with the phone.  My PC also has since come up with troubleshoot problems for my iphone and when I've investigated this it says it has no drivers for it and my pc cannot find drivers when searching for them I am currently using windows 7.  I have tried a new cable and this has not made any difference at all.  I have uninstalled itunes and reinstalled it and again no change.  How can I get my phone to work again as it used to.  At the moment I'm using icloud to get pictures off phone but I don't want to have to keep doing this as it takes so much longer.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I've been hunting information and fiddling for the past month now and I'm becoming very frustrated.  Thank you.

Go to the settings in your Jeep, "forget" the iPhone. And on the iPhone "forget" the jeep. Then put the Jeep in Pairing Mode and tap Settings/BlueTooth on the phone and pair them anew (which sounds less confusing than "repair them").

  • My calendar does not sync correctly since new ios update. Have some events 4 times, others not at all and some in wrong times. Help?

    Any ideas out there?

I'm in the same boat and wondering if anyone has found a solution.
For me, the problem started after I returned from a trip overseas. I changed the phone back into this time zone, but all my meetings are six hours ahead... I don't want to have to change each one individually.

  • ***! I've just gone through instructions given by Apple support on attempting to fix a mic problem on video. I went through steps suggested by tech support. They neglected one critical step. Everything has been lost since itunes auto synced to the phone.

I had a problem with the mic not working on video. Common problem. I went through the steps recommended by the tech advisor. Which included backup the phone to iTunes (OK), restore as new iPhone (OK), Phone then asked me to go through a few steps as per a new phone (OK), iTunes IMMEDIATELY SYNCED iTunes to the new phone (NOT OK!!!!!), I lost everything!!!! Valuable irretrievable photos, contacts the works. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER IPHONE!!!!! THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE. AND ON TOP OF THAT THE VID MIC STILL DOESN'T WORK!!!!

And by the way in case something thinks I'm a total idiot! Auto sync had been previously disabled. iTunes re-enabled it on its own. Well done R and D You've really screwed this one and it's going on social media big time. Stay away from iPhones and iTunes if you have one.

  • Apple TV - How to force local storage in auto-sync mode?

I love my Apple TV -- couple of questions:
    1. What's the best way to force specific movies to be stored locally onto the ATV
while in Automatic Sync mode? Should I delete the file from my iTunes library
and then add it back in, and re-sync?
    2. Also, would be great to be able to see in iTunes which files are available locally on the ATV. (Easiest way is to close iTunes and see what is left on ATV -- is there a way to determine this in iTunes from my desktop?)

Perfect! This is exactly what I was looking for. I had assumed I needed to use auto-sync to access the non-synced content. My bad. Thanks! Kevin
It's obvious when you know, but I don't think the 'sync' library that 'also streams' is particularly intuitive.
Older software use to have a 'sources' menu, so you'd basically either choose 'AppleTV' to play only synced material or an iTunes library to play via streaming.
I think it used to work better because the new 'merged' media list can confuse people, and I also think 'merging' a list of synced ans streamed content causes resource overheads that didn't exist in the past an has slowed menus, but I guess new features since software 1.0/1.1 have mad up for that.

  • Since installing the latest Itunes my phone does not auto sync as before, how can I set this up?

Since i updated to the newest ITunes my phone does not automatically sync as it did before. I am not able to locate my pictures or music or apps to set to auto sync. I receive no message that tells when the phone was last backed up to ICloud. I have several songs on ITunes under ICloud that are in the waiting status. This is all confusing. I have clicked on every available option.
    Thank you

I'm afraid at this point a backup can't be created anymore and the phone has been damaged too much by the water.
You'll have to get it replaced and use the latest existing backup you have.

I got it finally !!! You have to have both these options checked :
Work like a charm after this

  • Owning 2 iphones with one Apple account has = Sync Problems.

Owning 2 iphones with one Apple account has = Sync Problems.  iTunes is thinking my old iphone 4 is the same phone as my iphone 5C.  When I plugged in my iphone 5C it auto synced my 5C to iTunes and it wiped my 5C and restored it to the same content as is on my iPhone 4.  This is a big problem since my 5 year old has been using the iPhone 4.  It's all Mickey Mouse and Backyardigans.  (Total photo/app/contacts loss)
I was able to update the 5C and restore from a 3 month old backup that is actually the content from the 5C but now when I plug in my 5C it wants to "setup as new phone" or "restore from backup"  What's going on?  I'm afraid to choose either option.
How can I get iTunes to see these devices as 2 and not one?
Can I use my Apple ID on both phones still or is this the problem?

They were both displaying the same name in iTunes.  I changed the name of the iPhone 4 before the 5C was plugged in but it still went ahead with syncing it to the 4's data.

  • Genre sort in Browser, auto sync, sort order

I just updated to 3.1.1 and iTunes 9.0. Now Genre is missing in the browser. How can I get it back? Also none of my playlist sync in auto. I have to manually manage it. I rarely use it for music, just for listening to stories and podcasts, so it's important to have them in the correct order for listening, i.e. chapters. Now the playlist doesn't show up on the itouch sorted correctly.
    1. Doesn't have Genre in Browser. 2. Doesn't auto sync. 3. Sort order is messed up between iTunes and iTouch. 4. Is it caused by 3.1.1 or iTunes 9.0? Does anyone know how to fix these issues? I don't have an old download of iTunes 8 to uninstall 9 and reinstall 8. iTouch 3.1.1 can't be uninstalled. Shadow

iTunes 9 changed the browser to a column on the left side (by default), but you can go back to how it was on top, see the View/Column Browser menu. You can have multiple filters (Artist, Album, Composer, etc.) either as a column on the left, or across the top.
    shadow1953 wrote:

You have to be doing something wrong since auto-sync does work. Make sure your iPod is in auto-sync mode -- if you change the sync mode, make sure you click the "Apply" button -- if you don't, it won't change. If you're not syncing your entire library, then make sure that you've selected the playlists you want loaded onto the Touch.
    shadow1953 wrote:

Are you referring to the sort order within a playlist, or the sort order of all your playlist names? I know that the playlist name sorting has changed (again) such that punctuaion comes first, then letters, then numbers. If you're referring to the sort order of the items within a playlist, then it may be a bug -- there are reports of problems with the sorting of podcasts within playlists, so maybe the same is true for books?

    Not sure, could be either.

You can get down-rev versions of iTunes at sites like filehippo (there are others). Keep in mind though that your "iTunes Library.itl" file was changed with iTunes 9 and is not backward-compatible. You'll have to look for the old .itl file in your "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder (check the date of these .itl files). If you fid the .itl file from iTunes 8, just replace the current one and then uninstall iTunes as well as "Apple Mobile Device Services" and Quicktime, then install iTunes 8.
You can go back to a prior OS version on your Touch if you have the native file (you would if you previously did a firmware update, it stays on your computer). If you updated to 3.0 then you can go back to it by holding the SHIFT key as you click the Restore button (use the OPT key on a Mac) and then select the 3.0 version. You can't go back to 2.x in this manner, but there is a different way to go back to 2.x if you ever want to (won't go into that here).

  • Auto sync vs auto start

before itunes 9 I was able to set my iphone to auto start and not auto sync, now if auto sync is checked to turn it off, auto start is grayed out and my iphone will not start when plugged in? Does anyone know if this is a new feature for 9.0.1 or is it a bug?

"Secondly, I don't know how to get the SD version without paying for it a second time. Can you tell me how to do that?"
This is not part of the sync process at all. You import these as you would from any digital camera.
" I delete the music off my computer once I upload it to my portable devices to conserve memory."
Not a good idea. The iphone is not a storage device. It is meant to mirror the selected content on your computer. You are asking for problems if you delete the music from itunes.
"Is there a way to organize music without syncing?"
You can manually manage, but if the music is not in itunes you will likely run into problems at some point.
" If I change the settings to manually manage music and videos, will it delete all the photos and videos I currently have synced? "
It should not erase the photos and videos from your computer ( home videos and pics). It will erase the current itunes music and videos.
"If I go to manually manage will those videos on my camera roll get erased? "
No. Camera roll is not part of the sync process. It is temporary storage for vids/pics until you can import them to your computer.
"If I change to manually manage, will apps be manually managed too? How do you go about manually managing apps? "
I do not believe that you can manually manage apps.
Here is an article on Manually managing:
If I change to manually manage, will apps be manually managed too? How do you go about manually managing apps?
"Since the phone won’t be synced anymore, how do I do a back up and restore? What information does a back up save? How do I restore from that back up? "
Apps and music are not part of the backup. You can read about the backup here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
"If I ever wanted to go back to syncing, will everything get erased again?
    Yes.

  • Manual sync v Auto Sync

Hello, first post. Probably wouldn't have had to if i didn't "upgrade" to 3.1.3 but such is life!
I've had a variety of ipods since 3rd gen and always used them in manual manage mode, mainly because I like being able to delete things straight from the ipod, make new playlists, change song names, genres etc.
Since I paid my £2.99 to upgrade a couple of weeks ago (I only did it to get a specific app and quite liked the look of the search function and the genius mixes) my pod has been all kinds of tempremental - problems with syncing, the dreaded error 6999 message, constantly having to restore etc. I gather there's problems with Windows 7 compatability but I seem to have ironed these out just by deciding to auto sync rather than manual.
Trouble is, i listen to most of my music on my work computer which obviously has no music on it's hard-drive. I now can't listen to anything because my ipods on auto sync and it appears you can't listen to songs as they've been greyed out when they appear in the library.
My question is, if I change to manual managing whilst I'm at work, will I be able to change back to auto syncing when I get back home without it deciding to wipe everything off and then re-sync everything again! Since I upgraded, it's taken me the best part of two weeks to get 5,000 songs back on my touch (I've still got about 3,000 to go!) and to have to do that everytime I switch between computers would be a nightmare. If I can't, are there any other media players that I can use to play music from my ipod, without changing the way it syncs?

    Welcome to the discussions,
every time you change from manually managing music to autosync, all media content will be replaced with the content of that current library. See this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1535
The only thing to prevent this from happening would be not to switch back from "manually".

  • Importing song ratings without auto-sync or 3rd party software

My iPod Classic contains all my Mac iTunes' library (approx 150GB), and they auto-sync, so ratings, play counts etc are sync'ed seamlessly.
I manage my iPod nano and iPhone manually since their respective capacities are too small for my library.
How do I import song ratings etc back into iTunes without 3rd party software or creating playlists (dedicated to the nano and the phone) and auto-syncing just those playlists?
    Many thanks!

Hey! By mistake I found the solution to my exact question i.e. how to have ratings etc synced automatically without the use of playlists or 3rd parties. (Meg's answer actually convinced me to use dedicated playlists, but then, after toying with the devices and iTunes I stumbled on the solution to my original dilemma, which I've seen discussed in many places but not yet answered)
    So here it is:
when you connect the device (nano multi-touch or iphone 4, don't know about others) to iTunes, while having "Manually manage music" disabled (with "Enable disk use" enabled or disabled, it doesn't matter), go to Music tab, check "Sync Music", choose "Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres" and that's it. You don't check any actual playlists, artists etc below, you can drag from iTunes and drop your chosen music to the device, play it, rate it, connect to iTunes and sync and you'll see the rating and play counts updated. Simple as that.
Thank you Meg, your answer is actually the best, I guess, since having the dedicated playlists tends to keep things more in order, but - thank you Apple! - you don't always need to be perfectly organized in order to have an up-to-date rating.

  • Is there a way to auto sync playlists while manually managing your music?

I used to use WMP11 before I bought an iPod and used iTunes, and in that I was able to auto sync playlists to my Samsung dap, as well as being able to manually drag tracks/albums to it.
Since using iTunes, I have found it is not as accessible in this regard. Of course, you can opt to manually manage your music, but if you do this, it does not auto sync any info. This means that if I drag a playlist to my iPod and alter it at a later stage by adding more tracks, it won't alter it on the iPod unless I manually replace it with the amended one. It also means that any ratings that I set on my iPod do NOT get transfered to the tracks in iTunes when connected.
What I have done is set a playlist called 'iPod Tracks' in iTunes, and have dragged any extra albums to my iPod using that, as well as the smart playlist 'Top Tracks'. But the disadvantage of this is, if I drag a few songs from an album into my 'iPod Tracks' playlist, then later decide I want the whole album and drag that over, I end up with two of the same tracks in the playlist, which makes it look very untidy (although I am aware only one of each track will be on the iPod) so it is not ideal.
Surely there must be a way to auto sync playlists so that when you amend them in iTunes it does so on the iPod too, as well as manually drag over any extra tracks/albums you want without having a messy playlist work-around like I have done.
    Any help/ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

There is no way to sync content back to itunes. As you are aware there are a couple of unsupported ways to recover your content, you will need to decide if your content is valuable enough to go down this route.
If so and you are not comfortable with the procedures, I suggest taking the unit to a data recovery specialist with mac experience.

  • I am having a weird problem with my phone every since it was updated this last time. I can sync movies from my computer to my iphone but any movies I buy with my phone I can not sync to the computer. But I redownload it to the computer and can then sync.

I for the first time since buying my iphone and ipods for almost three years am concedering getting rid of them as I am getting tired of this problem. I can sync anything from my computer to the iphone. I can not sync movies bought on the iphone to my computer. I have tried everything and spent days trying to trouble shoot. I literally have bought hundreds of movies off Itunes but will not buy any thing else until I can figure this problem out. I have uninstalled Itunes reinstalled, troubles shooted using the itunes trouble shooter and reset my phone and nothing works.
When I try to sync from my phone to the computer it says it can not be done because the iphone is not hooked up to the computer. I have only had these problesm since the new update not before. I have bought new cables twice to see if it helped and has not. Both my kids have Ipods, I have a Iphone and was planning on buying two Ipads for the kids for Christmas but not if I can fix this.

You are correct.  Syncing should transfer any purchased media, including videos, from your device to your iTunes library provided your computer is authorized for the Apple ID used to make these purchases.  You mentioned that you have uninstalled iTunes before, but if you didn't follow this guide exactly, uninstalling iTunes and all of its components in the order specified, it may not have been successful so you should try again:  Windows XP or Windows Vista/7.
