Apple TV brought by Santa

I just hooked up the Apple TV and after a bit have it working with everything except sound through my Bose sound system. It plays audio through the TV speakers but I cannot get audio out of the Bose.
I can play movies, music, podcasts, etc but no audio except out of the TV speakers. I have an HDMI cable connected from ATV to the TV. I play regular TV through the Bose while connected the HDMI 3 on the TV, and I have the ATV connected to the HDMI port 4. Hopefully this is fixable, I would hate to not be able to use the Bose system.

Just bought the optical cable. I have never had one before so I wasn't sure about how to connect it. I grabbed a light and carefully looked inside of connector on the ATV, I lined up the cable connector (seems pretty straight forward) but I am not sure how hard I have to push on it. I have pushed pretty hard and it is not going in. I would expect it to snap into place but no joy. Has anyone had this problem, any feedback would be great. It appears that the cable is the same at both ends and I see the two small grooves on the sides and the larger flat portion on the top and the tapered flat portion on the bottom.
Thanks,

  • HT201342 So when is Apple going to allow us to merge emails? All my apps are STILL under my gmail address!!!!

I still have the irritating two emails that I have to sync my apps to -- my original gmail account and now an iCloud account. This stinks.

When apple first brought the cloud to market most individuals ended up with TWO apple ids. The .me one that they needed (or thought they did) to set up their original account and whatever one they had had for years buying music in the iTunes store (in my case, it's a gmail account). Many of us still have those two IDs and Apple has never allowed us, that I am aware of, to merge the emails. Most of my music and apps are on my iphone with my gmail account and I sync that one through the iMac. After I do that, I have to go to my phone and sync it with the .me (now .cloud) account to get those few apps I have under that email account. It's ridiculous! In my husband's case he originally had a problem with dupes in his calendar and had to have that fixed through the genius's at the Apple store. The geniuses agreed it was a shame but said they were unaware of any plans for us to be able to merge accounts. • Using Apple TV on another country

    Hello,
I am going back to Spain on christmas holidays and I was wondering whether if an Apple TV brought in the USA would work in Spain.
    THX

It should since the power adapter is built into ATV, so 240V 50hz is not an issue. However in order for you to rent movies from iTunes I believe it has to be connected to a U.S. iTunes account. I got a friend in Sweden that run his ATV first generation just fine, but he has an U.S. bank account with a credit card connected to that. I would also assume that movies and music added to your iTunes account on your Mac or PC should stream just fine as that part is not connected to a credit card, I have myself added movies manually in iTunes and they stream beautifully to my ATV.

  • Apple's a great bunch - MacBook Pro re-release.

Having bought my MBP on the 2nd of June and then found out about the £100 cheaper new upgraded version that came out on the 8th June, I wasnt a happy bunny.
To be honest the hardward upgrade side doesnt bother me. What does is the morality side of it where I wasnt given the chance to hold on and buy the newer one if I wanted too.
So I got on to apple customer services, told them about it and they said no probs we can do one of 2 things. Either send the machine back foc, get a refund and then buy the upgraded machine or they will refund the differance which for me was £100.00.
So I choose the £100 back.
By all accounts, because they upgrade all the time and cant advertise all the time situations like these are covered by Apples 'remorse policy'.
Thanks Apple - Im a happy bunny again

    Hi,
I am glad that some people have had the happy ending but what bothers me is that I bought my MBP just on this March and mine has a max memory of 4 GB and I just found out that the newer ones come with max memory capacity of 8 GB.
It is not fare that I can not have more memory on my MBP that I have just purchased it 3 months ago. I hope Mac could do something for me as well. I don't need any money. I want the 8 GB memory capacity.
Do you really want to pay for 4 GB memory modules? Apple is charging $1200 for a pair, although I've seen 3rd party ones sold for about $600/pair.
It's also well known that all Apple portables since the Santa Rosa chipset models can support 6 GB. It's not documented by Apple, but it's well known.

  • Apple developer - Glossy/Matte

I know this has been asked a million times and I apologize as I feel this may be a slightly different slant.
I am about to purchase a new 17in Macbook Pro. I have a 15 with the matte display and want to get the glossy this time around.
This machine will be used primarily for writing code. Has anyone had problems with the glossy display when writing code or during long sessions of composing documents?
    Thanks for the feedback.
    *steve*

Me personally, I prefer the anti-glare screen. I got my 2008 MBP with the anti-glare, was sad when Apple removed the option, and am glad that Apple has brought it back. In general if you can control the room lighting, you can "get by" with the glossy display. Angle your display or lamps to reduce reflection. But there are a few cases where I'm at a meeting, not at home, so not in control of the lights or my seating arrangement, and I'm "saved" by the anti-glare.
What may be difficult is the anti-glare is only available with the higher-res display. Font size may need some tweaking to make it easier to read your documents. Usually not a big deal with documents but sometimes an issue with code editors, which often use smaller fonts.

  • Replacement battery: damned if it's Apple's; damned if it's not?

    Greetings.
Posts requesting ideas for replacing a battery get replies warning folks away from any battery not sold in an Apple store,_ and yet_ the batteries bought from Apple get horrendous reviews (2 out of 5 stars based on 749 reviews).
So... why should I lay out CDN$159 for a battery that will be lousy and will be bringing me repeatedly back to an Apple store? So what if it has a one-year warranty? Is this just Apple's way of provoking us into buying a new notebook?
I've also noticed that, among batteries bought at Apple by people posting to this forum, some are Sony and some are SMP, and some people have had bad experiences with Sony and some with SMP. And if one is better than the other, but Apple sells both, how do I make sure I get the better one? Which is the better one? How does Apple choose which to sell? Why does it choose lousy batteries? Are the batteries lousy, or are they not being charged or cycled or calibrated properly? Can so many people be so bad at calibrating their batteries?
So, if Apple's replacement is rubbish, why not use a replacement battery from elsewhere? Has anyone on this forum bought and used a replacement battery from somewhere other than Apple? If so, what has your experience been like? Are the warranties honoured, or difficult to get honoured? Will any of these damage the computer? And, will using any of these void my Apple Care warranty, which will expire in July?
Here, for your comments or criticisms, are what I've found listed for the MA896LL outside of the Apple site:
    1) www.canada-batteries.ca: Apple A1175 Lithium-Ion, website claims it's compatible with MA896LL [even though the MA896LL came with a lithium-polymer battery], 1-yr warranty, 30 days money back, brand new, "manufactured by High-Capacity power products" (is that a description or a company name?), 5800mAh, 11.1V, CDN$119.00
    2) www.pcwith.com: li-poly, 11.1 V, 60-watt-hour, brand new, 24-month warranty "100% New original battery . NOT Refurbished ,NOT Replacement ,NOT Used ,NOT COPY ! Tested Fine !", for MA896LL, US$78.99
    3) "Battery Heads" via amazon.com: TechFuel® 6 Cell, Battery for Apple MacBook Pro 15 inch MA896LL Laptop, "Battery Storage Capacity: 5600 mAh / 60 Wh, Voltage: 10.8 volts, Chemistry: Li-polymer; This TechFuel® battery has a one-year limited warranty and a thirty-day money back guarantee when purchased from Batteryheads", US$69.95.

What's the significance of the Voltage difference: 11.2 vs 10.8?
My MacBook Pro came with a lithium-polymer battery. Can the battery be replaced only with another Li-Poly, or can I put in a lithium-ion battery? Apple's offering is li-poly.
[BTW: For those provoked into buying a new notebook, how do people with MBs and MBPs without removable batteries deal with dying batteries? Yet another new notebook?]
I contemplate all this, and the phrase "mug's game" comes to mind.
Thanks for any input you can offer.

    Hi Apple Maddened.
Yes, it is frustrating and there is no simple solution, I'm afraid. The Apple batteries for these models themselves seem to be very variable in quality and it is pretty clear that not many of them make the "300 cycle / 80% original capacity" mark that was claimed for them, unfortunatly.
My own reservations about buying or recommending cheap batteries from unknown, or previously unheard of, internet supplies lies primarily in the "safety" area. Bad lithium batteries can be dangerous commodities. They can burn down not just your computer, but your house.
For me, this wipes out most of the cheapest options, but it leaves a number in the "a bit cheaper than Apple but from well regarded , manufacturers / suppliers" range.
Looking at a few of the ones you mention:
    1) - "Canada Batteries" sounds like a "reputable" local operation at first glance, but I see when I look at its web site that it is actually simply an internet order company for which the only address given is a supposed warehouse in New York! My bet is that this is simply a more palatable name / front for a SE Asian direct selling organisation. All MBP batteries are Lithium Polymer versions of Lithium Ion batteries. They have to be to fit the case! I wouldn't worry about the difference in name, but I would wonder if I was going to be able to genuinely exercise warranty claims or sales returns if necessary. The fact that it uses different nominal voltage and capacity figures from the original batteries makes me wonder a bit, too. My gut reaction would be to steer clear.
    2) pcwith - clearly another S E Asian internet operation - see http://pcwith.com/about_us.html This one at least provides a Canadian contact address as well, but many of the reservations about "Canada Batteries" also apply
    3) "TechFuel" - very little real information available. "Battery Heads" seems to simply operate out of an office suite in Utah. Very cheap. (Too cheap to be any good? probably. I'd be wondering about these actually being "seconds" , or perhaps batteries that have been on the shelf for too long and are effectively "past their use by date" - Lithium batteries don't take kindly to being stored for long periods without use)
    4) www.attuu.com Not so cheap, may be worth a try. Probably also simply a US "office" for a SE Asian supplier. Require you to pay shipping for any warranty claims etc. Add US $8 charge to cost for shipping = $113US - cheaper than the Apple offering in Canada by $45 but only $16 less than the price in the US Apple stores! If you have any dealings with anyone in the US, given the strength of the Canadian $ at present, you might be better placed simply getting someone to buy you a genuine Apple one there!
(and so the list goes on).
There are at least two better known brands of replacements that are available at prices somewhat cheaper than Apple's Canadian price, and which have known reputable companies behind them, that may be worth considering.
The first are the offerings from "Newer Technologies". These are sold through OWC, who have a very good reputation with Mac users to uphold and aren't going to risk it for the sake of a few dollars. Newer Technologies themselves are also a long standing Mac supplier of things like processor enhancements and the like. The OWC $US price for the Newer battery is $99. Shipping is extra, but you are still talking a similar price to many of the "less known" names that you mention. I see Newer Technology also have dealers in Canada - see http://www.newertech.com/inter_resellers.php
The other "better known" supplier are "FastMac" - see http://store.fastmac.com/productinfo.php?productsid=3
These are claimed to be US made and I have no reason to doubt this. They also cost $99 and I've seen reports from people who have been happy with them (and one from someone who was not) , though I do doubt that their actual capacity is really any greater than the original.
I'd be inclined to think about the Newer or the FastMac battery if you don't want to buy another Apple one. They might not be as cheap as some of the others (though cheaper than your Canadian Apple ones), but in both cases we know they are genuine operations, with genuine reputations to defend.
My own guess, though, is that the performance of these better known batteries may not be much different to the Apple ones either. The fire scare that occurred with Lithium batteries at about the time the MBPs were released, coupled with the huge recall that Sony had to make as a result, means that these batteries were designed conservatively, sacrificing longevity for safety , I suspect.
My own reaction to the underperforming batteries in the pre-unibody MBPs is basically to treat them like a set of car tyres (whoops, "tires" for those in the US). I see them as replaceable commodities that I'll probably have to fork out for replacements for before I get around to buying a new "vehicle" instead. Like tyres, they vary in durability depending on how they are treated to some extent, but even then no two sets ever seem to be quite the same!
Yes, the price is a bit of a kick when it occurs after only 18 months (my own experience with my first MBP battery) . In Australia at present the Apple offering still costs an outrageous $199AU ($185US) despite the increased strength of the Australian dollar against the greenback, but even at this price over eighteen months it runs out at about 35 cents a day - a small price to pay for portability, less than the cost of a single cigarette, and probably less than the difference in the price of the additional electricity needed to run a desktop instead!
As far as your question about the new , non removeable, batteries in the unibody go I have a current model 13" unibody as well as my SantaRosa 15". After 130 cycles and 8 months use it is sitting on 98% of its original capacity, still working beautifully, and with a substantially better "health" rating than the replacement (Apple) battery in the Santa Rosa , purchased at about the same time (which has 92% after 54 cycles over 9 months - still better than my first one was doing at this point in time but far from ideal). The batteries in the new ones are labelled as "non-user replaceable", but in reality they are very easy to change , too. All round they are a vastly better product IMHO.
All up, though, there is no simple answer to your original questions. If I were you, I'd stick with either an Apple battery, or with one from one of the two other better known makers I mentioned, but I wouldn't be expecting any of them to last more than 18 months or so at a "health level" where you can depend on them.
    Cheers
    Rod

You can install Office 2007. You'll need to have Windows on your MacBook via BootCamp or another utility (VMware Fusion or Parallels) that allows you do run Windows. Essentially you'd be running Office 2007 on Windows.
I just installed Office 2008 for Mac, and it seemed to go fairly smoothly. My biggest gripe was that the registration process wouldn't take my product ID (I'm certain I entered it correctly).

  • "CHECKSTOP" LED#7 - Hopeful Happy Ending

    POWER MAC G5 (LATE 2005) - 2GHz
I had this light come on a few months ago and brought the machine in for repair. Unfortunately they could not get it to hang so it was returned after an OS reinstall with the warning that my RAM could be the issue (2, 1GB Corsair Value sticks). Side note: ProCare was awesome here, as I had my machine back next-day.
    Quiet for a few months...
Last weekend it hung again, and continued hanging. I pulled the RAM, leaving only the Apple 512MB. It still hung. Tried to get into AHT but it hung there as well. So I couldn't even boot off the HD.
Dropped off the machine last Monday to the Apple Store, Valley Fair (Santa Clara, CA). The genuises there are totally swamped as it's an insanely busy mall, but still managed to be calm and courteous. The long-haired guy who registered my box seemed pretty cool.
Anyway, they estimated 3-5 days and a full internal swap (logic board, CPU, power supply which is a whopping 750w). I spoke with them just now. The machine is "on the bench" and they've been able to reproduce the crashes so they're testing to figure out whether it's RAM, CPU, or logic board.
    "Hmm... another day or so."
But they were nice on the phone and I'm happy they were able to reproduce it!
I know some people have had LED7 difficulty with many iterations with hardware repair so I'm posting this as another story. I'll follow up when I get the machine back or when I know more.
    Have a good weekend everyone!

Hi! Just remember that bad ram can write bad data to a drive resulting in a bad system. The other day I was installing Win 2000 on a machine and I knew the cd was good but I kep getting a failure to install. When I pulled the ram the OS installed fine and it's been fine since. Tom

  • Advanced: Publishing to multiple domains (Folder structure, Podcast URL's)

    Hi everybody!
I am sooo excited, yet so frustrated here: I realize iWeb is being launched as a consumer app, and so have enjoyed the additional functionality Apple has brought with redirects, and personal domain availability, but have fallen in love with the program and want to use it (along with the other iApp methodology) to make my other sites. I can't (or don't want to) wait until further developement can occur, or the market dynamic with other authoring apps allow for a more clear roadmap. Basically I want to make different sites, and switch between them (using Transit for FTP functionality), and then also be able to 'revert to default', so that one-click .mac publishing can ensue. I realize off the bat that this is a big order, and various aspects have been covered by everyone here, but want to lay out what my specific problems are and how I've been doing things.
First, I was going to just 'Go with the flow', using the program as-is, making "New Sites" from the file menu, then going in by "Showing Package Contents" in the ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain file, then parsing the sites out to each separate subdirectory on my hosts' server. Then I came upon the dialog box prompt to specify the URL upon saving (which it states is required for the blogs' RSS feed). This is what prompted me to start-over again, creating a new Domain NewName.sites2 file for each 'Site', and things at least played swimmingly it seemed, as each retained their-own site-specific URL, and, upon closing all and reopening the original Domain file could go back to publishing from iPhoto etc.. for the web.mac.com/username workflow. Great, but this is cumbersome, and more importantly I am worried that this could cause problems down the road with filenames, and paths, and I am not even attempting any more blogs etc..
Are there any suggestions, including "Hey don't even keep going on this way?" I am understanding that the advanced features only work on .Mac, but what about podcasting- what would be involved to at least include a live podcast linked to iTunes on my own host- and would the extra work required be not straightforward, especially if the nature would involve change and updates to the code with the addresses/links? I know how to make the Podcasts and know basic HTML, but am new the syndication thing, but at the same time, realize that I'd have to do it regardless of what authoring app I would use.
Suppose I make a site, publish it to my server, then update the site. Would peoples' bookmarks be screwed up? Would a podcast still appear in iTunes if it were accepted? Could any advanced features be used? And if a 'workaround', or even hardcoding could be show to me, would this issue of needing to add on to the site and make changes cause existing work and its links to be disrupted each time?
Thank you so much in advance.

Suppose I make a site, publish it to my server, then update the site. Would peoples' bookmarks be screwed up?
Peoples bookmarks will normally only be screwed up if you change the names of your sites and pages inside the iweb app. If you have sent them to http://www.myname.com/sitename/welcome.html, best not to change the sitename to something else or change welcome to home.

  • How do I connect my new iPod Touch to my Ubuntu laptop?

Normally I'd just use iTunes, using a windows based machine, but since that particular OS has gone in directions I find undesirable (aka Windows 8's new interface and the 'enhanced' BIOS that restricts the hardware so much you cannot properly use it anymore), I've switched to using Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 3.2.0-30-generic (32 bit).  Trying to load iTunes via WINE (which makes the laptop pretend to be a windows machine again) is a massive headache...there seems to be no way to make it install properly.  Similarly having issues loading it through VirtualBox (where I actually run all the windows executables in a virtual machine environment).  And since there's no Linux-native version of iTunes around that I can see...
Is there a way to get the iPod to make itself recognized as a USB file storage device, so I can push my music onto it that way?  Or a way to get iTunes to work in Ubuntu (right now I'd be glad to use a web interface via Firefox, if one existed, that's platform-neutral).
    Sincerely,
anichols2000 - New Apple User, thanks to Santa Claus

Leon, no offense... but it obvious that you don't understand what we're talking about... we dont want to use the ipod as a usb drive... just trying to pass the usb connection to the virtual windows.... and i'm trying to help him
to the problem at hand, since linux can see the device with the lsusb command,  i think its a permissions problem. but first, did you install virtualbox from the website? or from the software center?
if from the software center.... purge it... and download the .deb from the website:
    sudo apt-get purge virtualbox
(or i think it may be virtualbox-ose)
did you add yourself to the vboxusers group as instructed?
    sudo usermod -a -G vboxusers anichols2000
of course you would replace anichols2000 with your linux username and make sure its a capital "-G" and reboot the system for changes to take effect. if that doesnt work...trying adding yourself to a couple more groups.. im guessing...
    sudo usermod -a -G disks anichols2000
    sudo usermod -a -G plugdev anichols2000
side note: im not happy with Ubuntu 12.04, the they took out some very useful gui tools such as "users and groups" and "Synaptic package manager". i would suggest re-installing them... you could add yourself to the groups through the "users and groups" gui instead of the commands above if you prefer after installing the gnome system tools...
    sudo apt-get install gnome-system-tools
    sudo apt-get install synaptic
    hope that helps..... good luck

  • One thing at a time (Machine)

Recently my iMac died, after a fatal fall. But the glorious folks at the Covent Garden Apple Store brought my iMac back to life with a shiny new Hard Drive.
I wasn't all that bothered by its death, as i knew i could get it resurrected and that all my data was backed up on to my external drive Time Machine. But now that its back i'm finding it increasingly annoying that i'm having to restore one file at a time.
I didn't want to restore everything, i just wanted some of it.
If i click a folder in Time Machine, i get the folder, with no contents, i then have to go back it to Time Machine and restore each file one at a time. And i'm constantly being told that i "Don't have permission to access this file" even if its a Text Edit file.
I might not need to restore everything, but i do need to restore a lot of files, at this rate i'll be at it for days.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i didn't want a full restore. I just wanted a few files, and maybe some more down the road.
The problem with that is, the user account you set up after reinstalling OSX isn't recognized as the same one as on your backups.   On a Mac, one user, even an Admin user, doesn't normally have access to another user's data.  That's why you can't restore things successfully.
Your best bet, by far, is to do a full restore.  Make sure everything is just as it was, and working properly. Then you can start deleting what you don't want.

  • An error occurred while burning the disc.

I tried to burn some stuff onto a DVD today with my PowerBook. Here's the info on the burner:
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E:
    Manufacturer: MATSHITA
    Model: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E
    Revision: DMP2
    Serial Number:
    Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
    Disc Burning: Apple Supported/Shipped
    Removable Media: Yes
    Detachable Drive: No
I bought some DVD's on sale at Radio Shack, and when I tried to burn a movie and a few photos onto a disc, the progress bar showed it starting to burn, then it stopped and I got this message:
"An error occurred while burning the disc. This disc cannot be used."
A little research here at the Apple forum brought me to this site:
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
And after downloading a little program called DVD Media Inspector, I was able to classify the DVD's I had bought as:
    "4TH CLASS MEDIA:
Pathetic garbage media, landfill material, about 0-50% success rate...."
OK, off to Mega Lo Mart, where I bought some nice, expensive Maxell DVD's.
Media Inspector doesn't see my fancy new DVD's. When I try to burn stuff using the Finder, I get the same result as before.
Getting desperate at that point, I located and downloaded updated firmware for my model of Matshita superdrive. I'm not sure what firmware is, and there was a free range one and a standard one, so I went for the standard one. There were dire warnings in the readme file about "flashing" a superdrive being on the same risk level as open heart surgery. I flashed my superdrive. (You can say that here, and it's not dirty.)
I also tried burning using iDVD, and after much preparation, it started to burn, then spit out the DVD. I tried three of the landfill DVD's and two of the Maxell ones. I'm out of things to try. Any ideas?
I have never tried burning DVD's before. Am I doing something wrong?

I tried again using iDVD's One-Step DVD making feature. It will let you make a one step from a movie file, and I had a .dv version of the movie I want to burn.
It encoded video for a while, encoded audio for a little while, then started to burn. The superdrive made some noises, then the DVD was ejected and I got an error message saying:
    "Burning Finished
Errors were found during the burning process"
I hit OK (though it really wasn't OK) and got another error message box. This one said:
    "Multiplexer error
    (some message about multiplexing problem)"
The message didn't make sense to me, and I was unable to remember it. What's a multiplexer? I would have guessed an avid movie-goer, but somehow I think that is not it.

  • Old address book will not open in Snow Leopard

After upgrading to SL, attempting to access AB in the dock brings up the message "This version of Address Book will not open in this operating system. You have Address Book version 4.1.2". Querying Apple Support brought suggestions from reinstalling just Address Book to utilizing Time Machine. Solution was incredibly simple.
When upgrading to SL, the OS upgraded AB...but only in Applications. If you're getting this message, go to Applications and click on AB there. If it opens, just delete AB in the Dock, then transfer the new, updated AB to the dock, and you're all set.

Somehow you've retained an old version of Addressbook (version 5.0.3).  The current version is 6.1
Look in the apps folder to see if you have the current version, the dock icon may be pointing to the old version.
