Apple TV, browsing music on home sharing, music stored externally

I wonder if anyone can advise...
I recently bought a Seagate Central wifi external harddrive, 3TB. Besides using it as a remote backup disk, one of the main reasons behind it was combining music collections on my iMac and my wife's MacBook Pro. Advantages being we can listen to each other's music without having to have both computers on at the same time. Also, I'd like to use my new Apple TV to access my music via home sharing settings.
So I have combined our music files onto the Seagate. I have changed the iTunes Music folder on both computers so that it looks to the Seagate for all the media. I have then "re-imported" the songs into iTunes from there.
Running iTunes from the computers, this works 100% Ok, even sending via Airplay to Apple TV. The problems come when browsing through using the Apple TV home sharing on My Computers. The Apple TV sees all the albums and tracks as you would expect. But if you play a track it comes up with a message "there is no content".
The strange part is that if I go to the computer and play the track once, when I go back to Apple TV it will them recognise it and be able to play it!
I am trying to find a solution that doesn't involve me clicking through every track of my music collection! Any ideas?

That seems strange.
Have you changed the itunes media folder location to the external drive?
iTunes > Preferences >
Try changing to location to the external hard drive.. so your itunes music gets saved there
Also I'm not sure iTunes can work this way..
I've seen someone try to use a timecapsule the same way and it required them to manually connect to the drive in the finder, before being able to play their music.
Is there a password required when connecting to the drive?

  • HT1947 Why can't I see all songs for an artist when using iPad remote for home sharing music through apple tv.

Why can't I see all my songs for an artist when I search by artist using iPad remote? I'm listening to music via home sharing through apple tv using iPad 2 as my remote. All my songs seem to be listed fine under "songs", but when I select "artist" many of the songs I have for that artist are not there, any idea why that is or how I can fix this.....I suspect it's because many songs may not be associated with an album and it seems only songs in albums are displayed when I search by artist.

Thanks Ferretbite, but that's not the issue in my case, the songs are not part of a compilation. I just checked several of them and the "Part of a compilation" box is unchecked.....it seems as if the song does not have an album associated with it, it will not display under the artist when I search by artist on the iPad remote which REALLY stinks.
Hope someone else might have a solution.

I believe if you updated your Apple TV, you need iTunes 11 to make it work.

  • ATV3 New Update Breaks Home Sharing Music Library Streaming (Again)

Windows 7 user here using Apple TV 3.  Overall, I love the device, when it works right.
When I first got it, using the Home Sharing Music Library feature from the Apple TV (in other words, pulling content from the computer) was broken in that it would play for a while, then suddenly stop.  There was a *huge* thread on this where many people seemed to experience it.
I was so happy when the last AppleTV update fixed this (for me anyways, and I'd guess many others) - since then (months) it worked flawlessly until today, when the ATV prompted me for an update.  Now it's even worse than before and appears to play the first song, then immediately get stuck on the second.  =(  Anyone else having this issue?
Fortunately, my workaround works, which is "pushing" content from my computer, but this isn't nearly as convenient for a variety of reasons (including much less control via the AppleTV if I'm just relaxing and listening).
I truly hope Apple can resolve this quickly, since they had it nailed before...

Luke, I can confirm the bugs with the latest AppleTV software, version 5.  It doesn't matter if it is an ATV2 or ATV3 because they are running the same OS version.  There are Home Sharing problems because immediately after I updated my ATV2, I started having Home Sharing problems when trying to play any video from my iMac.  The link between the Mac and the ATV2 breaks and it bumps back to the main menu with no computers displayed.  Quitting iTunes and re-launching fixes the problem, but it isn't guaranteed.  Sometimes you will get lucky and it will remain connected, other times, it will break the link again, after another 5 minutes.  And, it won't remember your place in the video when the link breaks.
The other major bug is that TV shows are displayed out of order.  Apple has confirmed the TV show order bug, but haven't heard anything on the Home Sharing bug.  I have reported that one to Apple.  Hopefully we will get a software update soon.

  • How to transfer music from home shared computer to ipod

The laptop my ipod is physically connected to has no music on it's hard drive.  I remotely access all of my files which are on a home shared media server.  I can view, play and edit my home shared music remotely with my laptop with no problem.  When trying to move those files from the home shared hard drive to the ipod it will not allow it.  In the menu that appears to the right when dragging files, the ipod is not shown in the list.  If I move home shared files physically to my laptop and then attempt to drag them to the right the ipod is shown in the list.  Is there any way to allow this type of transfer without moving the files to my laptop?

The "iPod" part can really be any drive or DVD-R or whatever your can fit the library onto.

  • Save music from home sharing to iPad

How do I import music from home sharing to my iPad?????

You don't.  that is not what home share does.
You have to sync the music via itunes and the usb cable.
"With Home Sharing in iOS 4.3 or later, you can stream your entire iTunes library over your home Wi-Fi network from your Mac or PC right to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch."

Cannot home share the game app purchased at iTunes store. Home sharing music works. Home sharing books works. But, when I try to copy the game app, it says my computer is not authorized. What am I doing wrong?

I've been struggling with a similar issue myself and just figured it out.  Some of my content had been purchased with an older Apple ID that I don't use any more.  When I authorized my second computer, I only authorized it for my new Apple ID, not my old one.  When I tried to copy my library to the new computer, many songs, apps, etc. reported the error "could not be copied because this computer is not authorized".  It drove me crazy because I knew the computer was authorized and much of my library came over just fine.
Finally I selected some of the problem items, selected "Get Info" from the menus, and saw that they were all purchased by my old Apple ID.  I then authorized my old Apple ID on my new computer, and all of my files are copying correctly now.
Would be great if the message said something like "...because this computer is not authorized for Apple ID [email protected]"

  • I would like to download the music in home sharing to my icloud on my iphone/

i would like to download music from home sharing library to my iphone icloud. how is this done?

All music on your iPhone that was stolen should be in your iTunes library on your computer along with all other iTunes content that was on the iPhone - movies, tv shows, books, and 3rd party apps.
With the current iTunes version, you can download previous music purchases and/or you can do the same with iTunes store app on your new iPhone.

The new iTunes update gives me no option for a "share" tab on the side bar for me to play home shared music. why? please help i need to listen to beyonce!! plzzz

"share tab on the side bar ..."
iTunes has not had a sidebar for over a year.  You can see one (as iTunes 10 used to show) by doing View > Show Sidebar from iTunes' menu.
But I'm not sure if that is your issue.  You do not need a sidebar to do home sharing.  Are you running the current iTunes (11.1.3)?  Have you turned on sharing in Preferences?   Have you done File > Turn on Home Sharing?

  • How often does the Apple TV sync with updated home sharing playlists?

I am trying to use several Apple TV's at my business for content management throughout our campus.  I want to be able to have a playlist of pictures and videos that is easy to update.  Can anyone tell me how often the Apple TV syncs with the home sharing network for an updated playlist?  It would be very inconvenient if the only way was to do a reboot on every device each time content was updated.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
I can't really say for sure how often the Apple TV updates its shared libraries.
I do however know that once the Apple TV as completed playing something, it will sync with the shared library in order to update the play count. So I'd be reasonably sure that the shared library is updated at least once every time something is played.

  • HT4352 I'm using the correct APPLE ID and password for Home Sharing on my computer but my AppleTv is not accepting it?  What's up with that???

I'm using the correct APPLE ID and password for Home Sharing on my computer but my AppleTv is not accepting it?  What's up with that???

I have the exact same issue. I also tried resetting my password. I can log in to iTunes on my laptop with the new password, on to my iPhone iTunes, but my Apple TV says it cannot recognize my password. I just did an Apple Tv software update a few days ago.
I am able to log in to Netflix on my Apple TV just fine. I did not have to re-enter my password for that.
Very frustrating. I hope Apple can figure this out soon and post a fix.
    Thanks for any advice.  Cheers.

  • Prevent Apple TV from playing explicit music via Home Sharing

Hi. I have Home Sharing enabled on my Mac and on my Apple TV. Through the "Computers" icon on the Apple TV, I can watch all my Movies, TV Shows and listen to all my music.
I have now bought a second Apple TV for my son for his birthday. He is only 12, so I have enabled Parental Controls.  With this, he cannot view any movie rated higher than 12, and the same goes for TV shows. However, he can still hear my explicit music. The music is tagged as Explicit in iTunes, and I have set the "Explicit Music" parental control option to "Ask", but he can still play it without being challenged.
How can I let him hear the clean music, but not the explicit music on his Apple TV?

    UPDATE
I went in to iPhoto and created a new album -- called "TV Screen Saver" and copied the photos from the old album that would not load.
Told iTunes to use that album for home sharing.
Told Apple TV to use that album for the screen saver.
    Et Voila!
Must have been something in the various updated softwares that disn't like something from before.
    Who knows.

  • Apple TV Won't Access Photos in Home Sharing -- Music, Internet OK

I just tried to update the iPhoto pictures I use for my Apple TV screen saver.  No luck.  The ATV tells me to turn my Home Sharing On even though it is already On.
I like having a screen saver of my photos from iPhoto.  From past experience I:
    * have an album in iPhoto with the pictures I want on the screensaver (I call it "Apple TV" and it has 119 photos)
    * I tell iPhoto to use that album
    * I turn home sharing on
    * On the Apple TV I choose the library that has my name under computers on the "Choose Photos" screen of "screen saver"
    * and to update with new photos (I just went from 118 photos to 119) I have to "trick" the ATV by choosing one of the stock collections -- say the national Geographic -- and once I have lions and tigers dancing across my screen I go back and tell it to get my photos.
I just did that and when I try to access my photos I get the message:
On my computer in iTunes home sharing is on and when I click on the "Choose Photos To Share With Apple TV" I get:
In iPhoto that "Apple TV" album exists and has the 119 pictures.
The ATV is working as it picks up my music library, shows the album artwork, and lets me play my music, Internet Radio, Netfilx, YouTube, ...  The network connection is the full five boxes strong.
I've rebooted the ATV and my computer ... no luck.
My ATV is running 6.1.1 (6698.99.19)
    My OS X is 10.9.3
    iTunes is 11.2.2 (3)
    iPhoto 9.5.1 (902.17)
I just upgraded my OS and have had a few hiccups and wonder if this is one of those.
    So what am I missing?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • Sharing music at home; sharing User IDs

My wife and I are faced with a problem of playing music from the iTunes library we have built over the past few years either from CDs or from the Apple iTunes Store.
I recently imported all our Cds into iTunes to save space and allow equal access. Our music now exists on ONE external hard drive. Most music tracks were imported from CDs, and therefore we don't have any restrictions who can play them. But then there is the music that either of us bought before and since married with our different User IDs. This means that music can only be accessed if originally bought by that person and on that authorized Mac.
    So what can we do?
Is homesharing a good option? is it a viable option? Doesn't this require both Macs to be open at the same time to enjoy the music? What happens if I go to work with the music hard drive, and my wife needs to listen to tracks? I'd like to clone our music drive so she can access music in this situation, but it wouldn't allow her to listen to music I bought.
Placing all the music on one hard drive makes it easier to consolidate your library, but only if you can access all the music.
What have couples done in the past? Once married, do they create a 'couples' ID and buy music together for the home? Do you authorize your computers to that new account? And if so, what about the older music bought with older User IDs?
How do people work around the authorization problem as well?
Maybe the solution is to create non DRM versions of all our music and then we might be ok? Is that the only solution?
I'd appreciate any thoughts on this matter.

ps: EULA has destroyed the idea of sharing. Piracy is so much easier with digital files, but knowing that parents can't hand down their music or films etc to their kids is very sad.

You seem to be making quite a few incorrect assumptions in your post.

Why do you think it means that? (it doesn't)
    So what can we do?
Keep the music on a hard drive at home.

    Yes.
What happens if I go to work with the music hard drive, and my wife needs to listen to tracks?
"The hard drive"? As in a single hard drive? Don't you each have hard drives on own computers? She can listen to all the tracks in her library.
I'd like to clone our music drive so she can access music in this situation, but it wouldn't allow her to listen to music I bought.
Why do you think this? iTunes purchases have been DRM free for almost 5 years.
And even with DRM, just authorize the computer for each others account (which is automatically done when you enable Home Sharing).
What have couples done in the past? Once married, do they create a 'couples' ID and buy music together for the home?
Personally, I would not recommend it. Keep the accounts you have. No sense in tossing another into the mix.
And if so, what about the older music bought with older User IDs?
    Just play it.

    Why can't they?
