Apple TV Buffering.........

I have just bought an ATV and am very disappointed.
It works, well at least with my music and photos but just takes for ever to load the pictures and just stops and starts, buffering, I assume with my music.
Can anyone tell me, am I doing something wrong, can I do anything to improve the situation, or is this it?

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

Apple TV uses iTunes. The reason you can't rent through your ATV is because you can't rent movies through iTunes Canada. Sadly, as this is a user-to-user forum, no one here would know when or if rentals will come to Canada.

  • Apple TV buffering issues with iPhone 4s and iPad 2

    Hi all,
I just got me an Apple TV 2nd gen (yeah, I know, ordered 2 days before the presentation of the new one). So far so good, the device is up and running, connects just fine to my Airport Express router and all.
However, if I try to stream a video from my iPad (2) or my iPhone (4S), the results are quite horriffic. The iPad videos would buffer for a very long time before they start and then quite fast after that the buffering problems restart. It's pretty impossible to play a video fluently of more than 20 seconds. If I'd try from my iPhone it's even worse with videos being 1080p, the thing just never plays, eventually the preloading process stops on the mirroring mode is cut.
I have to point out, all my devices are in the same room (WiFi) so the signal is the best it can be.
This is honestly quite surprising AND disappointing to be honest, given I bought the device mostly for that, so I can stream videos from my phone and pad.
Tell me, am I doing something wrong, or the video streaming over those devices is just a marketing gimmick with nothing real behind it?
Would it matter if I change my router from Airport express to Airport extreme?
    Thanks!

I have the same issue with ATV3 and iPhone 4S. Everything works properly, no buffering issues when watching netflix, vimeo, youtube BUT when I try mirroring even a small 15sec iPhone movie it stutters and buffers and results to a choppy playback..same with larger mp4 files such as 1-1.5GB, buffers forever and never plays, I just re-encoded the same movie to 700MB and plays perfectly..
Why Apple, why?..so close..I can accept the bigger movie files issue, but not being able to playback properly an iPhone movie is funny..I recorded a movie with lower bitrate through Filmic Pro (Economy mode, up to 16Mbps)
    and plays properly.
Is there an upcoming software update going to solve the problem or is it hardware related and therefore not fixable.
Please don't reply with a network related answer, by 2012 we know how to set up our networks and everything else runs flawlessly.
I'll apreciate a fast answer, we love Apple, but if it can't play an iphone movie (or a high quality movie from iTunes) it's just not up to my standards.
    Thanks again.

  • My Apple TV buffers TV content but is fine with Movies

I can easily watch a movie that I have purchased from the Apple TV with absolutely no buffering, but every time I try and watch a television show that I have purchased from the Apple TV it buffers in a way that I can't bear to watch it. This is clearly not a network problem on my end. Any ideas?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Your Apple TV may have become paired with another remote. Hold the remote close to and pointed at the Apple TV, hold down the menu and Rewind buttons together for 6 seconds or until you see a broken chain icon on screen.
If this doesn't help, try restoring it.

  • Apple TV buffers air play movie rented from iTunes and downloaded on iPad.

When I download rented movie from iTunes to iPad and then air play to Apple TV the AppleTV buffers for 30-45 min as if it is trying to re-download the rented move. It use to start instantly with a complete status bar.

    Was an internet connection available?
I'm not sure I would ever play a rented movie by mirroring from an iPad as mirroring is lossy and reduces quality.
It may actually not work via mirroring.

  • Apple TV - buffering problems

I have my favourite films and TV series on a network drive, linked to iTunes and accessed locally by my three apple TV 3rd generation boxes. They have worked very well, until the latest apple TV update. Now it plays for 15 minutes then endlessly buffers. This is the same on all three TV boxes. Nothing else has changed and I used to be able to watch the same mp4's for hours. Is it the software update, is it just me ? .... currently 3 boxes are useless (Thanks Apple)

  • Apple TV buffering content across home network

When streaming content (TV shows) from my iMac, it buffers a long time before finally starting up.  It'll pause in the middle of an episode to buffer more.  This is a new problem; only a few days ago I could start a TV episode almost immediately and it would play all the way through with no problem.  I've restarted both the Apple TV and the iMac from which I'm streaming content to no avail.  Both the iMac (iMac14,2) and the Apple TV (A1469) are up-to-date (10.10.1 and 7.0.2 respectively).  Any assistance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If on wifi, try connecting Apple TV via ethernet
Go to istumbler or similar to get a network report. Look for signal strength, noise, nearby networks

  • Apple TV buffering every 5 minutes?

I just got Apple TV today to take place of my DirecTV Cinema, which is terrible, but I am regretting this purchase. I downloaded a movie and it buffers at least every 5 minutes, not for very long, but it's very annoying. I also got a new modem and router for my wireless and that might be the problem.  Is there any thing I can do about this? Thinking about taking it back...

Yes, it's likely a network issue.
What is your connection speed (www.speedtest.net) 6mbps required for instant 720P, 8mbps for 1080P
Check istumbler.net or netstumbler for interference
Make sure router is up to date
Ensure you are on your ISPs DNS

  • Apple TV Buffering/Streaming Issues

First off, I have multiple Apple TV devices in my home.  Over the past week, I have been having buffering issues on movies and TV shows purchased.  Everything is hard wired ethernet.  In addition, I have download speeds of 42MBS.  It's only on Apple TV that I have the issues.  I have tried the same movies on all devices.  Anyone else having this issue?

I too am having issues with ATV after moving to MacOS 10.10
Here are some things I have noticed.
When ATV is sharing from an iTunes computer, streaming buffer will end shortly after
    screen saver activates
or the screen goes to sleep
or if the iTunes window is not the front window
or the iTunes window is collapsed
The work around is to disable screen saver and any sleep modes, have the iTunes window active, and don't use the mac for anything else.
When streaming from the Mac to the ATV, music and movies will also have many start and stops too them.
My conclusion is that using a ATV may not be the best choice for music or movie playback. Good thing I have my DVD player

  • Apple tv buffering with netflix

I'm having problems with apple tv constantly buffering while watching a movie on netflix. I made sure the time zone is correct but I am still having problems.

It's pretty obvious that the wifi streaming is broken.....
Based on what?  Your statement with absolutely no facts to back it up?
Wireless issues are just that, wireless issues... they are not ATV issues.  Try using a little logic before making blanket, unintelligent statements.
FYI, this is a user to user forum, so Apple will not be responding here.
If you have personally been experiencing an issue for "almost two years" and cannot resolve the wireless problems with your network, then it's time to run a physical Ethernet cable or get someone knowledgable to setup the Wi-Fi in your home.

  • TS3623 Apple TV Buffering Help

Out of nowhere, the TV show I purchased through Apple TV is constantly buffering? I've just done an update, but otherwise have watched several episodes without this issue. Any tips?

Check if the disk is full. Use a ssh client and log on to your ATV. User is "root" and password is "alpine". The ip you can find in the network section of settings on ATV.
After logon, run the command: "df -h /private/var" (do not include the ")
It should reply something like this:
    Filesystem
Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/disk0s1s2  6.8G  1.8G  5.0G  27% /private/var
Only 27% is used, and there are 5Gigabytes available.
What I've seen is that the directory for movies doesn't clear whan movie is seen.
If there is less than 2Gb available, erase this cache manualy with command:
    "rm -rf  /private/var/mobile/Library/Caches/AppleTV/Video/LocalAndRental/*"
Then ATV will buffer OK again.

  • Apple TV Buffering and 2.4GHz router issues

    Hi,
When I set m y router to 2.4GHz I have to wait forever to buffer movies that I have on home sharing on my ATV, I can switch my router to 5GHz and movies don't need any loading time - they play straight away. Now the problem I have with this is that having my router set to 5GHz means that I lose wifi connection on my iphone.
Does anybody have any suggestions as to why the 2.4GHz setting is so slow? Can I get around this issue?
    Thanks very much

  • Apple TV 3G AirPlay Mirroring Stuttering

I have alreadys posted in other threads but there is no thread with my exact issure.
In particular I have problems with the AIrPlay Mirroring with games on the new Apple TV 3G and the iPad 2.
    I have tried 3 different Routers: one with 150 MBit/s, one with 450 MBit/s and one dualband 300 MBit/s.
    The issue remains the same:
    1. AirPlay Mirroring is not 1080p on my TV. Tried 2 TVs, an LCD Samsung B650 and a new Plasma Panasonic STW50. On both TVs there is a visilbe 5cm black frame around the picture. I looked at the Apple TV settings and looked at the zoom and overscan settings on my TVs - so I couldn't find any errors in sthe setings.
    2. AirPlay Mirroring stutters on the TV that bad that it is not playable! I tried all variants 50Hz and 60Hz and no change. Music videos from my iMac didn't stutter once!
    3. From time to time the whole Mirroring freezes fo a second and the continues (and I'm out of the track and naturally out of the race)
I tried 3 games: RealRycing 2, Asphalt 5 and Modern Combat 3 - all the same issue.
So what the heck is happening here!?!
WiFi network isn't to slow or to far away (same room 3m ftom couch and 0,5m to Apple TV, wired connection to the router didn't help either).
+ Either the new Apple TV 3G or the iPad 2 seems not to support WMM, which can be switched on on some routers; the opposite happens: disabling WMM makes AirPlay work between iPad 2 and Apple TV3. With enabled WMM I wasn't even able to play music!
It seems like the Apple TV is buffering too slow or that the hardware is to weak!
(There is one thread where Apple TV buffers videos and stutters the same way. I didn't try look some long films, only Music Clips.)

DSL speed doesn't matter! It's only Mirroring!
My WiFi Router is the new Linksys E3200 (dual band 300 MBit/s). Should be enough.
As I already said: In my network during the test there was only my Apple TV 3G, my iPad 2 and my iPhone 4 in stand-by mode.
One thing to mention: The E3200 supports WMM to speed up streaming but actually it stopps all kind of streaming between my iPad and my Apple TV.
When I want to connect my iPad 3 to the WiFi in N mode, WMM should be enabled otherwise my iPad 2 doesn't conect at all
Solution there: Switch off the WMM and so I'm not able to use the N Netwotk.

  • Apple TV (2nd gen) - Very Specific Buffering Issue

I have been watching the threads regularly for a situation similar to mine but I can't see one so I am starting a new one.
I have Four (4) Apple TVs in the house and a large library of movies, TV shows and personal movies loaded into iTunes on a Window 7 64 bit system with an Intel i7 processor, 12 GB of memory and 2TB of disk space.  Everything seemed to work OK until I got the third Apple TV but that was a year ago and several software upgrades in the past.
My problem is that when all four (4) Apple TVs are plugged into power, even if the ones I am not using are asleep, I have horrible buffering delays when watching vidoes from iTunes on the Windows PC. I do not have any trouble streaming video from Netflix or the iTunes store directly. When the Apple TV stops to fill buffers it seems to lock up trying and never comes back (I have waited up to 30 minutes). However, if I exit out of the movie as soon as the buffering issue starts, and go back into the video where I left off - it starts playing again within 3 seconds and will carry on for another random period of time in the range of 2 minutes to 10 minutes.
Before anyone starts responding with the basic stock suggestions, I am a retired IT guy who has put a lot of time and technical effort into trying to find the root cause of this problem. I am very familiar with networking, Windows 7, firewalls, etc.
The work around is that when I want to watch videos from iTunes on my Windows PC I have to unplug the other three Apple TVs, restart my router and reboot my Windows PC. These three steps together work consistently but omitting any one step may or may not improve the situation. This means that I can't just decide to watch a video from iTunes without 10 minutes of advance prep work - and watching two different videos on two different Apple TVs at the same time only works about 30% of the time.
Here is some more background information:
I have two (2) iPhones, one (1) iPad, another Windows 7 64 bit PC, a MacBook Air, and stand alone Internet radio on my network. The problem persists even when all the other devices have been powered off.
All devices, including the Apple TVs, are running the most current version of software and have ALL patches installed.
I have upgraded my router (twice) and now have an ASUS RT-N56U dual band router with the Windows PCs both cable connected and the Apple TVs and all the other stuff running wireless.
I have used netstumbler to detect other networks and have tried various different channels on the router. I am in a low density area and only see two other neighbours with wireless networks.
I have a 20 MB Internet service connection via cable modem and have no problems watching videos on the Apple TVs from the Internet
I have relocated the router away from any other elecrical equipment (Apple TVs all show a full strength signal)
I have tried disabling my MacAfee Security Center virus and personal firewall software (the problem persists), then removing it entirely (the problem persists), then reinstalling only the virus protection component and enabling Windows Firewall (the problem persists).
I have removed all software from the Windows computer that brand name commercial software - I use Microsoft Office 2010 and Google Chrome as my browser (the problem persists).
Important - I have moved the complete iTunes library to a 2TB USB hard drive and run iTunes on my MacBook Air with the Windows PCs turned off (the problem persists).
There is one issue that seems relevant, but might just be a bug in the router management interface. I have set up reserved DHCP addresses for the Apple TVs and the computers to make it easier to identify devices when I am troubleshooting. The DHCP log shows the correct IP addresses being assigned to the correct MAC addresses but the network map screen frequently displays two or more Apple TVs with duplicate MAC addresses. It only happens with the Apple TVs and has never happened with anything else. This is what gave me the idea to turn off all Apple TVs except the one I want to watch and reset the router to clear the other addresses - which seems to be the only consistent way to watch an iTunes video without buffering problems.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have invested a lot of time and money in Apple technologies and setting up this home video strategy.  It's very frustrating that it doesn't work reliably.
    Thanks
    Bob T

I too am having this issue were two of my Apple TVs are showing duplicate MAC Addresses. I have varrified this by looking at the arp -a cache on multiple machines. I believe this is a major bug in the Apple TV software. Can we please get a fix.
