Apple TV can stream physical DVD played on my iMac?

I think some of you may like me living outside US and outside Apple's iTune market. I wonder if we can still buy this Apple TV to stream physical DVD movies played on our Macs (through iTune, I suppose) to our TVs. If positive, it will at least attract some sales from consumers globally.

I'm just wondering if this might be a future "software" upgrade. As we have an 18 month old LCD tv, our HDMI jack is being used by our HD cable and our component jack is being used by our DVD player. It appears that an HDMI splitter is a couple hundred bucks and the component cable splitter doesn't look a whole lot cheaper. It would be nice if we could just use our computer as our DVD player and eliminate the need for a DVD player all together, thus eliminating our "out of jacks" problem. New LCD and Plasmas have multiple Digital ins. But a year or two back it wasn't so much of an issue.
Thanks.

How can I watch a DVD playing on my iMac on my TV using Apple TV?

You can't. The only way is to transfer the movie to your computer and import to iTunes (making sure it is compatible) and either use home-sharing or airplay the movie off an ios device.

  • Can you Rip DVD's with a iMac?

    Hello,
New to the Mac world (but not to computers)!!.
Just a quick question in regards to Mac's, iMac's and the ability to rip DVD's.
Basically, can you rip DVD's on a iMac and copy it to a blank DVD? For example, if I wanted to rip "Lord of the Rings" and put it on a DVD, does Mac have software that is able to do this?
I know that you need a DVD decryptor to be able to do this. Is there one available?
Don't get me wrong; I am not about to go out and rip a bunch of DVD's then sell them. this is purely if I wanted to copy a DVD for myself, so I can have a backup (i've had a problem in the past where i've lost DVD's because I travel so much.)
    Much appreciated.

You'll need Roxio Popcorn or Toast Titanium 7 for compressing and burning.
This information is given with the understnding that it will not be used to make illegal copies.

  • DVD Plays on one iMac/Not another

    I've got 2 iMacs running 10.5.6.
    I've created a DVD on a Sony RDR-VXD655 digital DVD/VHS recorder/player.
DVDs created on the Sony will play on one iMac and not the other. On the one it won't play on the recorded DVD shows up as a blank DVD. The problem iMac plays commercial DVDs just fine.
I've tried to see what video utilities I have on the iMac that works and transfer them to the one that doesn't, but no luck. The only thing I haven't installed is Final Cut Express.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks... DHK

Contrary to popular belief, burning at the highest speed(s) are not recommended.
Burn at the slowest speeds that the discs can use.
When I would burn video dvd's. The newer drives had no problems, but the older drives wold complian, and spit out the discs.
I burn at the slowest speeds, now all of my dvd players are happier.

something stands out in your post... "... unplugging, replugging, .." i think this is one of the biggest contributers to people's problems with appleTV... what would you say to someone who said they are having all kinds of problems with their computer and they keep unplugging it and replugging it and it just seems to get worse? you'd tell them stop doing that.. your problems are likely caused by you corrupting files by doing the unplugging and replugging... so stop doing that!
I understand your logic here and also dislike unplugging unless I have to, but I think AppleTv OS itself must be protected against this kind of thing. Media, fileslists and temporary files probably aren't though.
I don't think AppleTV instructions say to use the mouse restart to reboot, but it seems sensible to do so, so i usually do.
Apple must appreciate however that people will relocate the box, have power cuts, unplug the wrong plug from a strip etc etc, so if there's no formal shutdown sequence it should be made resilient to sudden power offs.

  • Why can't my DVD play on other players?

I just completed a DVD in DVD Studio Pro. When I inserted into my computer, it plays fine. However, when I tried pa=laying it on 2 other DVD decks in the house, it was not recognized. Where do I go from here to fix the compatibility?

BINGO! That's what it was. Unfortunately, I found where I change from HD DVD to SD DVD and it will only change on NEW projects. So I will need to re-construct this DVD in DVD Studio Pro. Thanks for the tip.

  • Can't view DVD+R in my iMac

I have an iMac DV SE 400. I recently bought a Mad Dog DVD/CD burner (running from my Firewire port). It works fine, but I have discovered that my iMac will play a DVD-R, but it spits out a DVD+R without recognizing it. I'm running OSX 10.3.7. Is there a software or hardware upgrade anyone knows of that might allow the iMac to view a DVD+R? The DVD+R I burned from my external burner plays fine in the burner and in my DVD player in the living room, but won't even load in the iMac. I did try another recorded DVD+R from another system - it doesn't load, either, so I know it isn't just the one disc.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Mike
iMac DV SE   Mac OS X (10.3.7)

    I have the same imac.
Actually you cant read dvd-rw either.
I think it's the dvd drive that would need a firmware update but nobody cares to make it.
The othe possibility is that the optical in the drive is incompatible, so not even a firmware upgrade would do.

  • Apple devices can't connect to Internet on an iMac PPPoe DSL connection

Hi, I am using a time capsule and have it connected to the DSL using PPPoe. I have Internet access on my iMac desktop. I have also set up the airport utility with the same configurations and password that the PPPoe required. My iPad and iPod Touch both can see and connect to the airport wireless configuration that I set up. However, these two devices cannot connect to the Internet. Can anyone shed some light on this issue? I have looked on several forums but could not find a solution. The backups are working fine. About this Mac - version 10.5.8.
P.S. Can't wait until the Lion OS comes out!

You want the device that is directly connected to the modem to furnish the PPPoE service.
This is sounding like you had your Mac connected directly to your modem at one time, so in that type of setup, the PPPoE connection on the Mac would have been correct.
But, since you have added the Time Capsule....and it is now the device that is directly connected to the modem.... the Time Capsule must be configured to provide the PPPoE connection service, not your Mac.
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Your settings should look like this:
    Connect Using = PPPoE
Account Name = Your user name with your ISP
Password = Your password with the ISP
    Verify Password
Service Name.....leave this area completely blank
    Connection = Always On
    Disconnect if Idle = Never
Update to save settings and the TC will restart
Either delete the PPPoE connection on your Mac, or if  you want to retain it in case you need to connect your Mac directly to the modem at some point in the future, make that connection inactive.
If you are connecting an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the TC to your Mac, you want the Ethernet connection to be active on your Mac. This should happen automatically if the PPPoE connection is inactive or has been deleted.
Be sure to power cycle the entire network at this point. Power all devices down, or der is not important.
Wait a moment or two, then start the modem and let it urn for a moment by itself
Start the TC and wait for a green light
Then start each device one at a time until the network is back up

  • My Apple TV can't maintain WiFi connection...why?

I have a very strong WiFi signal in the room where the Apple TV is; my laptop and my iPhone both work perfectly fine on the wifi in there, but when I use the navigation on the apple TV to stream something it plays about 12 secods and then stops and says the Apple TV is not connected to any networks... if I wait 5 more seconds it reconnects and shows the entire navigation menu and I have to re-load the show... only to have this process repeated.
If I select Apple TV from the laptop or iPhone the video plays fine through the TV.  Why can't the Apple TV it's self stream without "losing connection"???

Scan the Support Community sites. Apple TV losing connection is prevalent. The many postings point out the problem occurs with Apple TV1,2and 3; with different brands of router including Airport Extreme; from current and past versions of iTunes; after varying periods of working well.....minutes, hours, days; losing connection with Home Sharing and loosing Airplay; whether the router and Apple TV are in same room or separated by distance; after trying innumerable posted 'fixes'; after exchanging for a new Apple TV.
Readers, please don't post a fix until you check it works for atleast a week.

  • IMac receives message "Cannot connect to Apple TV" - Apple TV can see iTunes library and can mirror with iPhone.

    Hi all.
I have an iMac (mid 2011) running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 and an apple TV that my little brother just gave me (I believe it's 3rd gen from serial #).
I can successfully mirror my iPhone 4S with AirPlay, and the Apple TV can see the iTunes lib from my iMac, but when I attempt to connect to the Apple TV from the icon in the tool bar it gives me the message "Could not connect to Apple TV."
Spent some time on the phone with a really super tech, he had me go through the paces with restarting the router, the apple TV, my iMac, checked all the network config etc - no dice.
I even reinstalled OS X.... still no dice.
    Has anyone experienced this issue?
The second tech who called me back thought it might be hardware related. I brought this iMac in for a new hard drive less than a year ago after it randomly began throwing kernel panics and finally it just wouldn't boot. I don't do very much with my computer so it's kind of odd that it would have these issues unless there is something fundamentally wrong with the way it was put together. It doesn't take any abuse - not like my macbook!
    Thanks in advance.

Had my iMac taken in - RAM replaced & video card replaced. Able to mirror in the store. Restored my iMac with time machine backup and restored apple TV. Still getting the same message. Could it be some network setting I'm overlooking? I tried it while the apple TV was connected via ethernet as well - no dice.

  • A duplicate DVD made on my iMac will not play on it although the original DVD will play on it and on my TV.  Answers?

I made a duplicate of a DVD on my iMac but it will not play on it.  The original DVD plays on my iMac.  The duplicate will play on my DVD player with my TV.  The original DVD is not a copyrighted commercial DVD.

That doesn't create a DVD. It makes a copy of the files on the DVD. All you did was put data files on the disk. A disk must be formatted correctly for a DVD player to recognize it as a DVD.
Use Disk Utility to make an image of the DVD, then burn the image to Disk.
    File menu, New>Disk Image from <DVD name>
Set the image format to DVD/CD Master.
Once the image is finished, select it in the Disk Utility Sidebar and click the Burn button.

  • DVD Studio Pro Authored DVD plays on iMac, but not PC or DVD Player

Have put several film up on web using FCP. Trying to make DVD of movies using DVD Studio Pro. The DVD plays on my iMac, but not my PC or my DVD player. Any suggestions?

Pop your disc into your Mac. On the disc there should be two folders, VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS. If the VIDEO_TS folder is not there, replaced by something else, then you have indeed created a HD DVD. You need to completely start over.
