Apple TV can't connect to library on Home Share

Recently I've run into a problem where my AppleTVs will not see our main library.  We have two libraries that we share on our network, and most of the content is on our office computer named "iMac Library". Over the last two days, more often than not it will time out when trying to connect to that library, giving me the message that it can't connect and I should check my home sharing settings, etc. If I go into the office and shut down iTunes, then start iTunes again, it will see it fine. Is anyone else experiencing this? I've got two AppleTV 2s and one of the latest (1080p) AppleTVs (is this referred to as a AppleTV 3 or 2.1 or what?) and it does it on all three units.
Any help would be appreciated.

The iTunes shut down/restart method has worked 100% of the time for me, but it also seems to have not happened over the last 3-4 days as much. I'm used to Apple mysteriously applying patches to fix stuff while not even acknowledging it on the forums so maybe that's what happened here.
Best example of this was when an update broke the order of your TV shows, throwing any shows in iTunes totally out of alphabetical order and it was like that for a few weeks with zero acknowledgement from Apple. The only thing that made it bearable was that the forums errupted with people having the same issue, so you knew it was going to be addressed at some point. I'm worried that since there doesn't seem to be an outpouring of other users with the same problem that it might not be as widespread, and I don't really like the idea of a several hour call to tech support troubleshooting this.
I'll keep the thread updated with any changes, but for right now it seems like it may have fixed itself. Hope that is the case with your issue as well.

  • Apple tv can not connect to library when wired to modem instead of wifi

    My network consists of a Fios router, which I have shut off the wireless on. That is wired into a Nighthawk wireless router. So, there is only 1 wifi network.
    The Fios router is wired directly into 3 Apple TVs.  I am unable to airplay onto the AppleTVs nor is AppleTV able to find my Library (it finds the name and then can not connect). I presume the issue relates to the AppleTVs being wired into the modem - and even though that is wired directly into my wireless router, when I am on a wireless device in my house, it can not reach through the wifi router and to the modem, which connects to the AppleTVs. Similarly, the AppleTVs seem unable to reach back through the Fios router, through the wired connection to the wireless router, which is connected via wifi with my computer with iTunes running on it. Other than wiring the AppleTVs directly into the wireless router (instead of the Fios modem). I would have thought that the modem and wireless router would act as a single network if wired together, but that appears not to be the case. Thank you

    PROBLEM SOLVED! holy crap i feel dumb.
    Connect360 was running in the background on my Mac. I've noticed when I have my Mac streaming to my Apple TV, and when Connect360 is pulling from iTunes as well-they like to fight. I disabled Connect360 and my library popped right up.

  • Apple TV can not connect to Library

    My Apple TV (2nd Generation) all of a sudden stopped connecting to my iTunes Library.
    Here's what I've done so far:
    1: Restarted iTunes - Failed
    2: Unplugged, waited 30 seconds and plugged  back in Apple TV: Failed
    3: Restarted Macbook (running 10.8.2): Failed
    4. Rebooted router: Failed
    5: Repeated all of the above at once: Failed.
    The error message I get after 2-3 minutes of "Loading "Johnathan Olesen's Library"......" is:
    "Could not connect to "Johnathan Olesens Library" Make sure the computer is on the same network (check) as your Apple TV (check), the iTunes verson is up to date (check 11.0.1) and iTunes is running (check)"
    everything checks out, and I see no particular reason this should NOT be working. It was working Sunday Night-as I was beaming some TV shows from iTunes to my TV. Last night, I watched a TV show on hulu-and than went to turn a cartoon on for my daughter (which was in iTunes) and it started happening. I'm not sure the issue-any help?

    there are 2 recent posts that suggest issues over 5, one where someone was trying to troubleshoot for a friend or client as they couldn't keep more than 5 connected, and the other where somone had more than 5 but was using 2 separate itunes libraries to share the load - not sure if that was with the same or differing AppleIDs.
    I guess there is always the possibility that things kight vary from one itunes version to the next even unintentionally to allow more.

    Unpower it.  If it still  happens on a restart give it time - Apple's servers sometimes have glitches.

    If you are still having trouble, you can try to reset your equipment by unplugging Apple TV, your television, your wireless networking equipment or AirPort Base Station, and your router from their power outlet. Wait 30 seconds, then plug everything back in.

    Lets be frank:  this is an internal server communication issue at Apple that they don't want to fix or acknowledge.    This "unable to sign in" or unable to communicate issues are all about purchase validation ONLY.  That is where it hangs up.   For example, I can see favorites but it won't access my list of purchased items.     And yet - the only advice they have is reboot?
    The same issue happens when trying to watch Netflix on ATV.   It can't connect to the Netflix server but gosh golly gee, I switch to my Roku box and no problem.   Unfortunately for Apple, while I'm over there I'm starting to to buy movies and shows from Amazon
    Apple doesn't make it's money from the $99 Apple TV sale - it's the iTunes purchases.   If we want them to listen we need to interrupt that revenue stream.

    Your post is very confusing. I really don't want to give you incorrect advice, but at the very least, if you answer my questions/responses, maybe someone can offer more help.
    You can download apps from the apps store directly from your iPad. I am assuming that you are connected to the Internet. Are you?
    Your library - meaning your iTunes library?
    You purchased free apps? If they were free you did not buy them in the first place. If you did purchase apps you can download them again without having to pay for them.
    Your can sync content automatically when you are connected to iTunes if you set it up to do so.
    You state that you bought an iPad so that you won't have to deal with that hunk of junk anymore. Are you referring to your PC? You still need a computer to sync your content, back up your iPad and download any software updates that may be released.
    A $50.00 item to store your library? You need a computer to store your "library". You sync your content to iTunes where your "library" resides. Even in the Windows world I think $50.00 is a pipe dream so you may need to invest a few dollars for a reliable computer that you can sync to.
    You can't connect to library? As I said earlier, I assume that you have an Internet connection or you can't download apps at all - even to your "hunk of junk". You have to connect your iPad to your computer in order to sync and you must connect to your computer in order to set the iPad up before you can use it at all.
    Please explain your problems more clearly so that you can get the help you are seeking.

    I was running into the same issue for the past few days and decided... Heck, just try the old fashioned way and unplug the thing.  Boom.  Fixed it.  Try unplugging it and doing the old reset and see how that goes.

    Contact Rhapsody to see if they have or plan to release an update for the app. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the app. Have you tried resetting your device by pressing and holding the Home button and power button until the silver apple appears?

    wifi is wifi, and business hub means very little.. this is area for time capsule discussion.. but the standard measures apply.
    1. Set wireless name (SSID) to a name that is short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Eg your Business Hub call wireless BH. There is no need for names longer than that.
    2. Set wireless channel for 2.4ghz to 11 or 6 or 1. Please test in that order. In Eurozone you can add 13 or use it instead of 11. They are the only 3 non-overlapping channels.
    3. Use no security to test.. of course this is unsafe long term.. so this is to test for a few minutes only.
    The only security that should be used with N wireless is WPA2 TKIP-AES .. it can be named several different things ie in Apple routers it is WPA2 personal. Use a passkey of 10-20 characters.. more if you are paranoid, mix of upper and lower case + numerics.. so pure alphanumeric.
    4. If it fails set the mode to G wireless. It is more consistent standard.
    If it still fails buy an Apple router and use that as WAP.

    Need more information to help you, but I am providing some suggestions.  Sorry if you are past these type of basic things.  But didnt really have much to start with and understand your technical level to start with. 
    Have you got into Settings > Computers > Turned on Home Sharing (Note: You must use the some Apple ID used by the iTunes library on your MAC for them to see one another)
    How is your MAC connected to the network vs the 720 ATV2?  Is one WiFi and the other Ethernet?  Have you tried switching the ATV2 to WiFi if Ethernet? 
    Has the MAC been restarted since this started happening?  Same with your Router and any other networking device being used?  Sometimes an IP conflict can arise in your networking and most consumer networking equipment does not know how to "self heal" without a reboot. 
    Make sure you have given those things a whirl and share back your results.  Any other information you can provide, such as how you connect to your network from each ATV and MAC.
