Apple TV cutting out - not restarting

I've never had any issues with my Apple TV until I did the latest update.  Ever since, it randomly cuts out, where the picture and sound disappear for about 30 seconds.  It doesn't go off as the light is still on, and when it comes back it has not restarted because the music kept playing or the video kept playing.  Even the screensaver will still be on if it was on when it cut out.
Anyone have any ideas?

would having the router around or on a metal shelf cause this problem?
Also, why would this ONLY happen to 1 apple TV, as now the others are fine.
Thanks for the help by the way!

  • Why is my Apple TV cutting out when watching TV and Films?

Hi there, will try to provide as much info as possible but let me know if more is needed.
I have purchased the newest Apple TV (March 2012) recently, and have noticed that it cuts out when I'm watching films and TV shows, but never when I listen to music or the radio. My friends have also noticed they cannot play youtube videos off their iPads onto the apple TV. When it cuts out, it does not say "cannot connect to iTunes" or anything similar to that, it just returns to the home screen and then we can select the computer and TV programme and resume playing as normal. This happens every 5-10 minutes during a show/film though and does get incredibly annoying.
Originally I felt it would be a network problem. We have BT Infinity and the Home Hub 3.0, and I am aware that lots of people have issues with this. However this problem doesn't happen on any other device, nor when playing music. It is specifically when watch movies and TV shows. I have actually swapped the home hub device for a Netgear Cable Router back and forth trying to see if it ever made a difference, and the same problem is still happening therefore I do believe it to be a problem with the Apple TV.
I have checked the troubleshooting advice for the Apple TV and followed that and nothing seems to have helped (unplugging various bits, making sure i'm on the right channels etc.).
In short I have literally no idea what could have happened and what to do about this, and before I actually rang apple I wanted to know if anybody new anything about problems like this and how they can be resolved.
    Many thanks.
PS it is also worth noting that on our homeshare, we can no longer access one of our friends iTunes, despite it being visible it never loads and is invisible to the Apple TV. This also baffles us and we are not sure if it is related!!
Can;t think of any other details but let me know!

I have three Apple TVs at home (one 2nd Gen and two 3rd Gen).  I have not had this issue.  Worst thing that happens is it will not load my content from iTunes after waking it up, so I reboot the Apple TV and that fixes this.
My Dad has a 2nd Gen and it has started cutting out or dropping during playback of movies from iTunes and Netflix.  I tried restoring it over WiFi and also directly from his iMac running Lion and the version of iTunes previous to the latest that changed the iTunes layout (Not sure of the version), but it would fail saying the download was corrupt.  I even downloaded the .ipsw file and tried manually restoring that way, but it failed as well.  I purchased the USB cable for Apple TV to do this.
I just took it home tonight and tried restoring on my iMac running Mountain Lion and the latest version of iTunes and it worked.  I will bring it back to my Dad's and test it there.  I will post the results.
Maybe try this and see if it works.  I noticed that doing it through iTunes that it said it restored the latest version of OS for Apple TV and also the Firmware.
None of the Apple TVs mentioned have been Jailbroken, so not sure if this would be causing issues for anyone else.  Just trying to rule out anything I can think of.
I didn't get a chance to try this next step, since restoring from my iMac worked, but this was going to be my next step:

  • Apple TV Cutting out

I have a 2010 Imac, my itunes on an external HD hooked up through lighting cable, and 3 apple TV's in my house. In the last few days, my apple TV's cut out when playing music, movies or TV shows from my library, but work perfect for Netflix.
It also cuts out when I try to play from my phone to the apple TV.
I have restored them, repaird my imac drives, ran check after check and the Imac is fine. All software is updated.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Apple TV constantly cuts out -- and in both iOS, and Mavericks -- multiplies

    Hello All -
Yes, this is another "Apple TV cutting out thread."  I am getting so frustrated with this issue I could almost throw something.
    Here is my setup -
    MacBook Pro Retina w/ 10.9.3
    Apple TV 2 w/ 6.1.1
Apple Time Capsule 2 (flat with 1 TB HDD) w/ 7.6.4
    PowerMac G5 w/ 10.5.8 (media server)
I have not jail broken anything, and I only use iTunes and Screen Share to control this entire apparatus.
When I stream movies to the iTV through the Media Server everything works just fine for about 5-10 minutes, then everything cuts out for about 1-2 seconds before coming back on -- thereafter everything works great.
When I clone my desktop onto my TV from my MacBook pro, I habitually have one of two problems --
    1) The first of which is no audio, which I've been able to fix with a "sudo killall coreaudiod" command in the terminal.  This is just more annoying than anything -- why can Apple not fix this.
    2) What is really egregious is when I extend the desktop onto the TV, its normally for YouTube playlists -- and it cuts out every 30 seconds or do for a second or two.  Does anyone have a fix for this, and can someone explain to me why Apple has yet to fix the issues -- given they are so common?
Thereafter, when I am done watching whatever I am watching for the night -- the network (on both computers) sees the Apple TV as some outrageous number -- right its 250, and rougly equates to the amount of "cut outs" since the last power cycle (not just sleep mode).
    Thanks!

sounds like your network is unstable
test by connecting both devices to the router by ethernet cables

  • I am having problems with Apple tv radio. It cuts out after a few minutes this appears to have happened after update to IOS 8

I Am having problems with the radio on the Apple TV cutting out after a few minutes. This has started to happen after software update to Ios8. Has anyone else had this problem and are Apple looking into fixing it?

I am having the same problem also  Thought it was my network and reset everything including Apple TV but still the problem is there . I assume now it is down to iOS 8 prior to that was perfect

  • Protege 7100 laptop keeps cut out.

    Hi,
I own an old Protege 7100 laptop. If I watch a DVD on the machine using the battery and not the mains power, after about 10 minutes, the laptop just cuts out like it has run out of power. If I turn it on again, I can watch the DVD for about 3 minutes and the same happens. The large external battery is new. When it cuts out, I restart and check to see how much battery life is remaining, and it tells me that the battery has not fully discharged. This does not occur when using the mains power.
I was wondering if the laptop had another smaller battery that was dead (because it is so old) and that is effecting its performance. If I am using the laptop for word-processing or other non-taxing things, there machine is fine (until the battery fully discharges).
I do not know a lot about computers, so any help would be very useful.
    Thanks,
    Adam

    Hi Adam
Not easy to say why this happen but maybe is there some problem with power supply electronic. If you watch DVD the power consumption is much higher as usage of simply writing applications.
If the battery is new it can just be problem of power electronic. Sorry but here we can just speculate and just an intensive check can give you precise answers.
By the way: this unit has no internal DVD drive.

  • Audio problems - sound delay on play - and cutting out.

I have an iMac 27" i5 - and having an audio problem in FCP 7.
There is a delay when I press start/play. At first there's no sound and after about two seconds I can hear the sound. Also when I play my sequence my sound comes and goes (cutting out) - not always at the same spot. Scrubbing is also giving me hassles - I first have to press previous- and next frame a bit (to move the play head up and down the time line) in order to hear the scrubbing frame by frame. This happens when I use internal or external speakers.
What can this be - maybe a driver update? But I'm up to date with my upgrades.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Tx!

    LOL - no worries
I don't have anything else connected to the iMac. Sometimes I have Safari or Firefox open - but I have also tested it without those programs open - no luck. I have not deleted my preferences - what's a safe way of doing that. My sequence setting matches clip settings.
Will keep a close eye on it when I start a new project - with fewer media on the timeline initially.
    Thank you for your replies.

After recent upgrade to Yosemite on Macbook air bluetooth audio cuts out and associated video stops with audio. Likewise with airplay and Apple TV. I have deleted all my saved wifi connections and restarted numerous times. I do not expect a resolution from the community, but hope to get the attention of Apple engineers. If you are having same problems or have a miracle cure I am all ears.

May start my own thread, but I'm having similar issues.
I've been using an old iMac (running 10.7.5) and Apple TV for years with no issues. Last week I bought a new Macbook Pro running Yosemite and have had audio issues multiple times. The weird thing is that sometimes it works flawlessly, other times (like now) I spend half an hour just trying to get a song to play.
My issues are: When I got to "computers" in Apple TV to stream my music, my music is sometimes chopper or intermittent, and I seen to know when it's going to happen based on the status wheel just before it plays. When I choose a song, the status wheel will spin for an unusually long time, usually an indicator that the audio is either not going to work, or stutter.
When it does finally pull up a song, the playhead sits at the beginning of the song for a good 3-5 seconds before actually playing. Then, when it starts playing, it's all downhill. It will play a few seconds, drop out, play a few more seconds, drop out, and then ultimately the playhead will keep moving across the song as if it's playing, but there's no audio.
Again, this is a new phenomenon never experienced by me. I've tried everything I could think of, some of them all at once:
    • restart Apple TV
    • restart Macbook Pro
    • quite iTunes/open
    • turn off Home Sharing on iTunes then reconnect it
    • unplugging and cycling both my modem and router
None of these have alleviated the problem.
The odd thing is, like this morning, the audio started up perfectly and never gave me any issues. It wasn't until later in the day that it started. Perhaps after the macbook pro had been put to sleep? Not sure.
Regardless, this is an annoying trait, one that's new to me and my system (as stated, worked flawlessly until my new purchase), and is 100% limited to either a) the macbook pro b) Yosemite or c) both of them.

  • Apple TV Airplay Unbearably Cutting Out after Update

    Hi All,
I have an ATV v3 on a wired ethernet connection to my router (gigabit ethernet) on a 20mbps ADSL line.
Ever since I've had it it's been very poor for streaming over wifi, can only just handle MP3s from iTunes and videos are unwatchable. This is coming from multiple sources - iPhone, iPad, Macbook pro. Music is intermittent at best with dropouts every few minutes and often cutting out all together requiring the reselecting of the Apple TV as the output.
All of this so much so that I have to revert to the good old tactic of actually plugging in my iPhone to the stereo or Macbook to the TV. So archaic.
However, since I live in an apartment with lots of wifi signals I figured it was probably because of that. So, I hard wired in the Apple TV over ethernet and since then it HAD all been working much much with no dropouts and almost watchable.
However, after all the updates, I'm back to square one. The updates have literally rendered my €120 Apple TV useless and certainly 'not fit for purpose'. As I sit here trying to listen to a song playing from my phone, it can't even get through 1 whole song before dropping out. And by the way, I'm only sat 5M at most from my wireless point, in the same room.
5 year ago I was able to continuously and reliably stream music to a Roku Soundbridge that was basic at best. What the feck is Apple doing with this stuff? As most people, I buy Apple products because I expect them to just work and I don't want 20 mins of hair pulling, shouting frustration until I give in and have to plugin the computer / phone anyway. It's ridiculous and yet I fear it will fall on deaf ears.
    My setup.
    iPhone 5s, IoS8
    iPad 4, IoS8
    Macbook Retina OS Mavericks
    Wired Gigabit Ethernet connection
Wireless N connection for the others.
    Static IP Addressing
    Reset / Restarted everything.
    So what's going on?
    Chris

I appreciate that with knowing nothing about my network you're pushing a passive aggressive blame on me however it's out of place. I work as a System Admin for a national healthcare staffing firm and from reading your post in this thread I'm assuming I actually have more knowledge on what networking is and what could and could not effect Airplay. Also, please read. The issue is the device is restarting or powering off, how is that network related? Is it getting some demonic version of a WOL packet and powering down?
I mentioned multiple devices streaming have the issue ranging from iTunes on a PC to mobile devices. This sets off a flag right away that the Apple TV itself is the issue as many "users" are having a problem with it. Second, there was zero issues prior to the iOS 8 update of the Apple TV, also points to it not being a mystical magical network issue. Third, there's been no network changes in my home that would impact Airplay magically only when iOS 8 comes out.
My Apple TV is hard wired using gigabit on the same switch as my work laptop and NAS. Both have the same issues streaming since iOS 8 on the Apple TV. My iPad and iPhones also have issues over wi-fi. Here we're looking at two different parts of the network having identical issues with the 1 device. Once again the evidence points to the Apple TV.

  • Streaming cutting out when streaming from iTunes libarary to Apple TV

Up until a day or two ago everything was working fine, and I haven't changed anything with my WIFI settings or anything else.
I usually load up a .mp4 file into iTunes libary and then play it, and then I click on the Apple TV icon to stream it to my TV. This works fine, however after about 10 minutes it can cut out, and then when I restart it, it's fine, but then cuts out again later.
At first I thought it was a problem with the file I had converted from AVI to MP4, but I just tired a native MP4 and I still get the issue.
I haven't changed any settings on my mac or apple tv.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.
The following article(s) may help you.

  • Why, after three months of apple tv working perfectly fine, is it now cutting out constantly and the audio and video out of sinc?!@

Why, after three months of apple tv working perfectly fine, is it now cutting out constantly and the audio and video out of sinc?

Playing rentals, Netflix, from local iTunes, other?
Firstly restart router and AppleTv after unpowering to see if that helps - may or may not but quick and easy to try.
Connection via ethernet or wifi?  If wifi are there any new devices in the house which may be causing interference or new neighbouring networks?  If feasible try to eliminate wifi issues by using an ethernet connection.

  • HT4628 Why does internet connection on my Time Capsule cut out (on main but not guest network)?

Hi - I just got a time capsule 802.11n to use with my Macbook (OSX 10.6.8).
My wireless connectivity on my main (but not guest) network cuts out EVERY FRICKEN DAY multiple times.  The internet phone connection + guest network still work, so the internet connection is there -- something with the main network is going wrong.
When I reset the time capsule (remove plug and plug back in), it works fine again.
Can anyone recommend a solution so this connectivity problem stops?  Never had any issues with my Netgear wireless router, so at the moment, I'm really disappointed in this Apple product.  Hopefully there is a setting I can switch to fix this (or something else simple one of you smart people out there can recommend)
    Thanks,
    JLG

In any event, if your OS X version is 10.7.x, download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Lion:
    Lion: AirPort Utility 5.6.
If your OS X version is 10.5.x or 10.6.x, download and install AirPort Utility 5.5.3:
Leopard, Snow Leopard: AirPort Utility 5.5.3.
After you install the appropriate version of AirPort Utility, open it. The program will be located in your Utilities folder, which in turn is found in your Applications folder.
To open the Utilities folder, go to the Finder and select "Utilities" from the Go menu:
AirPort Utility 5.6 looks like this:
... but make sure you use the version of AirPort Utility you just downloaded.
Launch AirPort Utility and select your Time Capsule. Click Manual Setup, then the Guest Menu tab, then you can elect to disable the guest network, or to establish whatever security settings you want.
The window looks somewhat like this:
If your version of AirPort Utility does not look anything like that, you are probably not using the one you just downloaded. Find it and start over.
When you are finished configuring your Time Capsule, click Update and allow the Time Capsule to restart.
