Apple TV Disappearing Act from iTunes

Thought I would post this here for others in case it is helpful:
My Apple TV 40 GB has been randomly disappearing from the iTunes device list ever since I purchased a New Airport Extreme Dual-Band N Router. I have been having to check and un-check the "Look for Apple TV's" option in the iTunes Preference panes so that iTunes could see the Apple TV and so that the Apple TV could see iTunes after it disappears. All software on computers (Mac OS, iTunes) and firmware on the router and are up to date as of June 2009. I was previously using the old UFO Airport Extreme G router without problems.
While monitoring computer and iPod connection speeds using the Airport Admin Utility>Manual>Advanced>Logs and Statistics>Wireless Clients tab, I just happened to see the Apple TV connected at an abysmal 26 Mbps rate, with a connection type of a/b/g/n even though at other times it connected at well over 100 Mbps wirelessly using just a/n type. While I was watching, it dropped down to only b/g and 13 Mbps and as soon as it did this it disappeared from iTunes again.
So what appears to be happening, at least for me, is that as the Apple TV changes its wireless connection type for whatever reason, it loses its communications with iTunes and never re-establishes the connection to iTunes, even though the Airport is showing it still connected to the network at a horrible rate.
The fix for me so far has been to force the Apple TV to connect to the Airport at 5 GHz only. Not allowing it to hop the networks on b/g.
I accomplished this on the Airport Extreme Dual-Band N Router by going here:
Airport Admin Utility>Manual Setup>Airport>Wireless tab>Wireless Options ...> Check the 5 GHz network name option> Set your 5 Ghz network name and leave the other defaults and apply the settings.
Finally, go the the Apple TV>Settings>General>Wireless network settings and select the 5 Ghz network name you just created. This forces the Apple TV to now connect to this network.
You can also force your newer Apple MacBooks to connect to this network as well, making all of these 5 GHz capable devices connect to this higher speed network.
Again, this worked for me and I just wanted to put this out there for the few others who have been dealing with the disappearing Apple TV syndrome.

Sadly AppleTV and/or iTunes are flakey i the extreme at re-establishing interrupted connections, Apple needs to sort this out.

Prevent computer sleep when Apple TV is streaming from iTunes ...

Hi,
Is it possible to prevent my computer from going to sleep when my Apple TV is streaming from my iTunes library ? I was told that I can watch a port to see if there is data streaming through it.
What is the port used for this ?

My computer does not go to sleep in response to the system preferences's setup. It has always been like that since I bought my iMac. I have submitted this problem to this forum many times and was never able to find a clue.
I don't have any other problem with my iMac and it works great. I also didn't want to go through a full reinstall. In order to get it to sleep, I wrote a little handler script that monitors my computer's activity. It looks at specific apps or processes and monitors their activity. If none of these apps or processes have been active for a specified amount of time, the script forces my computer to sleep.
When streaming is pushed from iTunes to my Apple TV, iTunes is then acting as a server. I can see if it is using CPU. I monitor it's activity and put it to sleep when the delay is expired. When streaming is pulled from my Apple TV, iTunes does not use my CPU and I don't know how to monitor this specific «pulled streaming». I hope that this better explains what I am trying to do.

Apple TV3 dropping connection from iTunes...

I've read a lot of issues on the same thing but I wonder if anyone is having the same issue as me.
Thinking it was a hardware problem I secured a replacement from the store but I'm having the same issue.
I have a PC, Windows 8
BT Infinity (with their home hub, I'm UK based)
My Apple TV is wired directly to the hub (I have also adjusted the settings to give the Apple static IP addresses, I've also tried it with automatic IP)
If I boot everything up from scratch the Apple TV will play both music and my movies (both my DVD rips and those purchased from iTunes store and downloaded to the PC).
However, let's say when I've done the above I decide to watch a movie that is on the PC, it works and I can watch the full film or even a TV program. Then I decide I want to watch another film after viewing that one, that's when I get the spinning wheel. The Apple TV will recognise my iTunes library and display the movies but unless I watch something on the cloud I cannot view what's on my PC hard drive. Then after a bit the Apple is telling me to turn on home sharing. It already is on and my PC has no sleep settings activated, I turned them all off so unless I power down nothing will enter sleep mode or even powersave.
I then have to reboot the PC and open iTunes again.
Like I mentioned I've taken the first one back for an exchange, the same problem persists. I've also been on the phone to Apple who advised to power everything down for 5 minutes then turn the router back on followed by the Apple then the PC. That worked, so I then left it for 5 minutes and then the problem happened again when I decided to watch a film that I put on my PC hard drive. It seems that I have to choose what I want to do quickly but it wont work with further requests after something is played.
I am using the inbuilt virus checker that comes with Win 8 (Elements I think it's called) and I use Windows Firewall. I have tried creating a rule to allow iTunes to connect out on the firewall settings but this did nothing. I've tired automatic IP addresses and now trying static ones but again, no joy. Bonjour has been uninstalled, reinstalled, opened up connections in the firewall, basically everything I've read on this issue I've done.
I read somewhere about turning off the Dolby Stereo, and yes, you guessed it, nothing corrected it.
Has anyone had this problem exactly and any idea how to overcome it. Apple have suggested a clean reinstall of my PC, so I tried it, wiped everything and started again. Nothing, so I tried it on my laptop which has Windows 7 and it seems it's not localised to just one specific version of Windows.
Getting a bit fed up now!
As a last ditch attempt I also checked the serial number to see if it was an old unit that needed to be replaced but it's not. Oh, and I have also tried wireless and wired. That didn't change anything.
One interesting thing though, when looking at the settings for the BT Home Hub and looking at devices, when I know the Apple TV is connected it's showing as not connected. It appears as though it is dropping connection after it has perhaps synced the whole film from the PC. I can't think of a way to force it to stay connected.
Any suggestions?

UPDATE
This is now resolved, not with the use of the Homehub though.
After another conversation with Apple they asked me if the Youtube app on the TV works, which it does then there's a problem elsewhere! Therefore Apple think there's an issue with the hub or the home network. They also asked me to try something on the hub called Port Forwarding. However, because that the hub isn't an Apple product they are not allowed to advise me on tinkering with the settings. But did suggest to Google a website called port forwarding.
Having a look at that I tried what it suggested by connecting to the BT Homehub, you guessed it, that didn't work either. I called BT who advised that their technical help team that would deal with this has been disbanded and the person I spoke to gave me the port forwarding suggestion on Google.
At this stage I had had enough and after reading a few more bits of feedback I then looked at replacing the hub with something I could buy myself. This led me to Amazon where I purchased the ASUS RT-N56U and a modem to go with it. I ripped out the hub and linked the modem to the line in the wall and the router to the modem, I had to bridge the router to the modem and after that was done I set up the wireless.
I'm now very pleased to say that it works, everything is syncing as it should do and the speeds of my downloads have also increased. So far no issues at all. I also have a constant connection to the PC and can view as many films as I want that are downloaded to the PC. No lagging, no problems at all.
Bit of an expensive solution but the modem and router I bought can also replace a Virgin one should I change suppliers in the future.
If you follow this solution and are doing it the same with BT just Google the username for the hubs as it's the same for everyone, you can get that username from the hub if you connect to it but if you're like me and didn't think of that all the solutions you can google. I used the CD's that came with the items and I had it all set up and running in 5 minutes. If you do purchase the RT-N56U don't forget you need a modem, as that bit I forgot about and then had to order that via Amazon as well.
That's really all you need!

Apple TV plays music from Itunes for 1 second only

The Apple TV sees all my music from Itunes and I can select any of the tracks but when I play one the music only plays for 1 second before stopping. Sometimes I'll hear the 1 second of music, sometimes not. I've reset all of my settings on the Apple TV. Music plays from Itunes out of my laptop when I have the device set to computer. If I select Apple TV as the device, the song wont play and just hangs, but on the television bottom left corner it will show the track information as though it was going to play for one second before it changes to a blank treble clef image labled "untitled". Any ideas?

Apple TV Randomly Disconnects From iTunes While Streaming Videos

Hey All,
Anyone having an issue where your Apple TV randomly disconnects from your iTunes on another computer while streaming videos from it? Randomly, on different shows and movies, I have had it do it quite a few times.
In the beginning, after it would disconnect, within a few seconds, it would reconnect to iTunes and then I would have to navigate back to what I was watching and and resume it. Now, it will disconnect, and then I will have to quit iTunes on my iMac and then start it up again.
I am curious if it is an issue with the wireless adapter on the ATV because when it happens, it looks like it losses complete connection with the iTunes and then reconnects to the net only after. Then I would need to restart iTunes on my iMac to continue watching my show.
This was happening before the recent update and continues after the update as well.
Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

That is a possible solution, but I will definitely check with Apple first, hoping it will be a no money solution (I am a grad student, every dollar helps).
My apartment is two rooms, my iMac being in another room, so that wouldn't work. The Wifi extender will probably be my only hope if Apple is not cool with the helping a brother out.

Apple TV's disconnects from itunes

I have 2 apple TV's streaming from my mac mini. Whenever I reboot my iMac into bootcamp both AppleTV's disconnect from the iTunes on the mini. This is very weird because I have nothing pretty much on the bootcamp part that would interfere with it, not even iTunes installed. Anyone have a clue as to what might be causing this? Both ATV's are on wireless N to my Airport Extreme router.

Why does apple Remote app disconnect from itunes all the time

I have downloaded the apple remote app on my iphone 5 and have successfully attached it to my itunes library via Homeshare.
However, if i leave my phone and it goes into the suspended mode it will not be able to find the itunes library again.
To do so, i have to turn off the HomeSharing facility on itunes, then turn it on again. Then the iphone Remote app will find the itunes library.
Please please please can someone help me as it's doing my brain in?!?!?
I am running the itunes program on a PC.

ITunes song keep disappearing from iTunes

Hi,
A brief explanation. I decided to copy my 6000+ songs from iTunes to an external Smartdisk as a backup. I simply dragged the Itunes library folder from the iMac home icon and saw it copy to the smartdisk and entitled it Itunes Aug 07. Then I went to play my songs in iTunes and none were there at all. They were now all on the smartdisk.
I dragged the folder back to the iTunes library.
This took some time, but was unsuccessful as many songs were not imported back to the new iTunes library folder. I am continually confronted with the exclamation mark in the source window and the warning that the original file could not be found and would I like to locate it!
I tried consolidating all music from the Advanced menu, but this did not work. I still have to open the Aug 07 folder and manually drag songs to the new iTunes library folder. I can play the songs once i have dragged them over, but once the computer has been closed down, many of these recently dragged songs disappear again from itunes with the above explanation and I have to manually drag them back to iTunes.
The songs involve include those purchased from the Itunes store and songs imported from my Cd collection.
It is very infuriating as you can imagine and I just have run out of ideas.
Any help greatly appreciated.

It sounds like what you need to do is to set up iTunes to store your Music Library on the external drive instead of the main drive (I'm not sure what a SmartDisk is).
I haven't ever done this myself, but here's an article on how to do it.

How many times can I download a movie from iTunes?

I recently purchased some of the movies offered in the bundled sales and am curious how many times I can download them. Will they always be in the cloud, or do I exceed a limited number of views or downloads at a certain point? I suppose if I did exceed a limited number of views from my Apple TV, or downloads from iTunes to my computer, I should then back them up.

If you are in a country where you can re-download films, and if the studio allows re-downloading, then you will be able to re-download them as many times as you like - but there is no guarantee that they will remain in the store (studios occasionally remove them), so you are better off keeping your own backup copy of them (and similarly with your other downloads) rather than relying on them remaining in the store

Can't download from iTunes in the Cloud

iTunes Match and iTunes in the Cloud for Music has just been enabled for Denmark.
Hence music I have purchased should now be available for download on my iOS devices, e.g. my iPad.
However, when I attempt to download a song, via the Purchased 'tab' in the iTunes Store App, where I get a list of my purchases all marked with the iCloud icon, I get the error "The item you tried to buy is no longer available", see the screenshot below. I know the song IS available in the store, but I get the error none the less, and I get the error for all songs.
Is iTunes in the Cloud just not ready or is something else going on? I have tried to sign out and sign in again, restart the app, etc. to no avail.
Suggestions? - I write iTunes support and wound up in an endless loop of nonsensical replies

Streaming Movies and TV Shows from iTunes is very, very slow since recent update

I have an Apple TV 2nd generation and since I updated it to the latest firmware available, that came out last week with the announcement of a new Apple TV, streaming content from iTunes servers, Movies and TV Shows, has become a nightmare. I don't think it is due to the firmaware update as I think it is due to the lack of capacity of the servers. As recent as last week everything worked fine. I would just press play and the TV Show would start almost immediatly and the streaming was fast enough that all the TV Show, past the point I was watching, was downloaded, without any delay or having to stop to rebuffer. The first time I noticed it was on monday this week and since then I have been testing streaming directly from iTunes every now and then and it never came back to work the way it did. I know the problem isn't my network. I have a 20 Mbits connection and download content at 2 Mbytes/sec on avarage.
And I don't know if it has something to do with the fact that Apple has made available content in 1080p, and that maybe it is stressing its servers even more. What I do know is that the way it is working right now undermine the entire concept of what Apple TV should be like. It has to work just the way it did when Eddy Cue gave a demonstration of the new Apple TV on Wednesday, the content played authenticated immediatly and started playing, without long time buffering. "People are going to love streaming movies and TV shows in 1080p with the new Apple TV", said Philip Schiller. But I can't even stream 720p content.

I am also experiencing intermittent streaming from the cloud with 1080p content. My internet package is pretty decent with 25MB and when I download a show on iTunes, it shows a download speed of 22MB so all is well with my connection to apple. The only way I can stream content without any interruptions is to change the settings on the AppleTV3 to 720p.
I called my ISP and applied for a 50MB package and see it it helps.

When I download a movie from iTunes the cover art disappears. I try get info and add the art, it doesn't show up. So it's just gray. It opens and plays fine. Apple can't figure it out. It's an nas drive. When I use a firewire drive I get the art

When I download movies from iTunes to my NAS drive, I don't get the cover art. It shows up while its downloading, but when it's finish it disappears. If it has an iTunes extra the cover art is there. I tried get info and add the cover art, it never shows. Regardless of how I add it. Funny thing is, if I download the same movie to my external firewire drive, no problem its there. I've called Apple with no success. I've even tried copying the movie with the art from the firewire drive to replace the file on then NAS drive I still loose the movie cover art. I also tried several times to re download it, no luck. Any ideas? I'm out of ideas.

Do you have any videos/movies in the video app?
In iTunes if you right click on the video and select Get Info and go to the Option tap what Media Type is shown?
