Apple TV Doesn't Recognize Library with Macbook Closed

Hello all, long time reader, first time poster.
Just purchased an AirPort Extreme and I plugged in my external HD with my iTunes library. Everything went well, went in and pointed iTunes to the new location and voila, good to go. I can now play songs without having my hard drive plugged in to the Macbook; something I've been sorely searching to do for quite some time. In any event, I then turned on my ATV2 and voila, it picked up the library and I could navigate my library. Until I closed my Macbook....
There has to be a way that my ATV2 can recognize the library without having to open my Macbook and open iTunes. Right????

Welcome to the Apple Community.
AFAIK if your macbook is closed it will sleep and shutdown its wifi connection. Oddly enough I saw some information that questioned my understanding earlier, but the difference was that the macbook had a display plugged into it, I don't know whether that's any help or not.

Apple TV 7.0.2 Airplay with MacBook PRO OS X 10.10.1 is not working, I have validated all settings and rebooted all systems (per Apple recommendation) and still not working what seems to be the issue?

You need to upgrade your OS. It's your responsibility to verify if your equipment meets the system requirements, not the Apple Store.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;

  • Genius... doesn't recognize library

I opened up iTunes this evening and attempted to update Genius results but was met with the following error: "Genius results can't be updated because the iTunes store doesn't recognize your iTunes library. Please turn off Genius using the Store menu, then turn back on."
I am logged in to my account - in fact I just purchased a movie through iTunes, so I know I am logged in. I only have two machines activated under this account. I followed the instructions (turned off then turned on) - and that didn't work at all. Is this something on a local level that I messed up, or are others experiencing this problem?

You know what's most frustrating? I listened to it and actually turned Genius off only to NOT be able to turn it back on again. This, of course, deleted ALL of my genius playlists (and some of them were actually really good).
I'm thoroughly annoyed right now. It's finals week and I was using those playlists to help study.

  • Dual monitors with macbook closed

i am running dual monitors with Macbook Pro and would like for my Macbook to be closed.  How do I change that setting?

How do I change that to two separate extended screens.
I don't believe you can. Check with Matrox, but my understanding is that the external monitors running through the Matrox box will always function as a single extended desktop in two parts.
If you do check with Matrox about this, please post back with your findings — I'll be interested to know, whether I'm right or not.

  • External display with MAcbook closed?

Trying to set up an external display with my macbook. Is there some way to use the Macbook closed? I want to be able to use the external monitor as my main display and don't need the built in screen. Thought this was possible. Thanks for any insights.

Yes, it is. Connect an external USB keyboard and external monitor. If you don't have the keyboard then you can use third-party software that will allow the lid to be closed without putting the computer to sleep. Try InsomniaX, for example - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Apple TV doesn't recognize computer over WiFi, but does through Ethernet

Home Sharing from iTunes on my Mac Pro to an Apple TV (2nd Generation) only works if the Apple TV is connected to the router using Ethernet (i.e., hardwired). With WiFi (using the same router), the Apple TV won't detect the Mac Pro library. Everything else works fine over WiFi (e.g., Netflix and movie rentals). I can even control the Apple TV using my iPad when connected via WiFi or Ethernet. The only thing that doesn't work via WiFi is access to a network iTunes library. Any suggestions? The router is in bridge mode (i.e., it is an extension of the router that the Mac Pro is connected to). However, since the hardwire connection works, why wouldn't the WiFi connection work? And why does it work for everything but the network library.

Thanks for the suggestions. The problem actually solved itself. When I unplugged my Apple TV, the wireless wasn't recognized so I put it to sleep and woke it back up. When it came back on, the wireless recognized my Mac Pro library. If anyone else has trouble, you might try getting the Apple TV to recognize the desktop by using a hardwire. Then restart the Apple TV (or put it to sleep and wake it back up) with the ethernet unplugged and see if it will show up.
By the way, the bridge mode on my extender isn't a problem. I can hardwire or wireless to the extender router and the IP address on the Apple TV is the same as the host router (i.e., the one that the Apple TV is not plugged into).
    Thanks again.

  • Apple magic mouse keeps losing connection with Macbook pro

I have a 2012 macbook pro, after upgrading to Mavericks(10.9.1, not have any other 3rd party software, just pure OS X), my magic mouse always losing bluetooth connection suddenly every one or two days. When losing connection, I found the bluetooth chipset type showing in macbook system information changed to unkown (FFFF). I have contacted with apple global support, and also have not gotten the solution. Just cleaning cache, and ect. but still didn't work.
When I downgrading the OS X to 10.8.5 Mountain Lion, same macbook, same magic mouse, work very well. Never happened lose connection issue during one and a half month.  So, it should be a Mavericks bluetooth driver's issue, or something reletived.
Any body have some good idea in solving this issue?
    Thanks in advance!

I have the same problem with a 2007 MacBook Pro on Snow Leopard. As soon as I changed the mouse's batteries, it started losing connection every few seconds. The mouse came with Energizer batteries originally - they supposedly don't fit well, but the mouse worked fine. I exchanged them with Duracell, which gave problems. Now I have Varta batteries installed, they give problems too. The paper-trick doesn't work for me.
Quite franky, I think it's rediculous that a fancy €69,- wireless mouse is so fussy about batteries. It's impossible to work with it. Is this just another way for Apple to get people to buy their batteries? I think a mouse this expensive should accept any and all batteries. Please, Apple: fix it. Seems like a really simple matter. Just put longer and stronger springs in the contacts for the negative poles.
    Thanks.

  • Apple Display doesn't shut off with new Mini

I have a brand new 2009 Mini hooked up to my 23" Apple Cinema HD display.
When I shut down the Mini, the power on the display does not power down.
I used to have this same display hooked up with the same mini DVI to DVI connector hooked up to my late 2006 MacBook. The display used to shut down when I shut down the MacBook.
There is absolutely nothing different in my setup between the MacBook and the new Mini as far as connections and cables as I'm using the same cables.
Is anyones display powering off with their new Mini?
I wouldn't think that the mini DVI out would be any different on the MacBook as compared to the new Mini. But apparently there is unless I'm missing something.
I don't really want to live with this as all of my computers shut down automatically at night using the Energy Saver control panel. With the new Mini, the display remains on all night.
Maybe I should have bought a new MacBook Pro 13 to replace my older White MacBook 13.
    Ideas? Suggestions?

I would hate to say that this might be an upgrade issue with recent updates.. I 'used' to be able to power off the monitor (touch the switch on the side and the light goes off) but no longer able to.
And to confuse the issue, the 23" ACD power switch is now acting like the Mac Pro's power switch.. While the Mac Pro is running a lengthy process, I'll often turn off the monitor if I am away for a few hours but now, when I touch the ACD power button, the Mac Pro responds with a "shut down, sleep or log off" kind of query.. Well that is certainly new to me..
Does this happen to yours as well?

  • Apple TV doesn't recognize my password

I've been trying to get my Apple TV to connect to iCloud so that it will update my photos for my screensaver, but it keeps asking me to log in and then not recognizing my usual password.  I've double checked the password and it works with my other devices.
My Apple TV also doesn't appear on under "Manage Devices" on my iTunes account.
Has anyone else had this issue?

i have been trying for the past week to access my itunes account from apple tv with no success. the message displayed says that "cant access itunes store".
i have restarted and reset my apple tv and nothing. it is also not possible to restore it or check for software upgrade.

  • Using Apple TV With Macbook Closed

    Hi,
I have recently bought Apple TV and I know that the device has internal memory that it uses to load its content.
My question is, once the content has been "loaded" into the Apple TV, can I then close the lid of my Macbook and start to watch or does the macbook need to be running still to access iTunes?
    Many Thanks

The Gen 2 and 3 ATV's have minimal internal storage.
There may be a setting in OSX to allow this, a search of the forums would reveal if any such setting exists.

  • Safari doesn't recognize flash on macbook air

Since upgrading to Mavricks 10.9.2 everytime I go to a website that runs flash I am asked to install.  HBOGO, netflix, youtube.  It is telling me that I need to download and install the newest version.  I've installed it twice, with no luck.
    Any advice?

If you're sure you've installed the latest version of Flash, take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. After each step, relaunch Safari and test. For a "missing plug-in" error, start with Step 8. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
You might have to log out or reboot before a Flash update takes effect.
    Step 2
In the Safari preference window, select
Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    Close the window. Then select
     ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Advanced
and click Delete All. Close the preference pane.
    Step 3
If you're only having trouble with YouTube videos, log in to YouTube and load this page. You may see a link with the text "Leave the HTML5 Trial." If so, click that link.
    Step 4
If you get a warning of a "blocked" or "outdated" plug-in, then from the menu bar select
     ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Advanced
and click Check Now. Quit and relaunch the browser.
If the warning persists, triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources
Right-click or control-click the highlighted text and select
    Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open. Inside it, there should be a file named "XProtect.meta.plist". If that file is missing and you know why it's missing, restore it from a backup or copy it from another Mac running the same version of OS X. Otherwise, reinstall OS X.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 5
In the Safari preferences window, select the Advanced tab and uncheck the box marked
    Stop plug-ins to save power
    Step 6
Open this folder as in Step 4:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Delete the following item, or anything with a similar name, if present:
    Flash Player (failing).plugin
You may be prompted for your login password.
    Step 7
Re-download and reinstall Flash. Download it from the domain "get.adobe.com". Don't click a link from any other website, including this one, because you can't trust links. They may be an attempt to trick you into installing malware masquerading as Flash. Type the address into the browser window. Never download a Flash update from anywhere else.
    Step 8
If you get a "missing plug-in" error, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
from the Safari menu bar and check the box marked
    Allow (or Enable) plug-ins
    Then click the button marked
    Manage Website Settings...
if present and make sure that the website is not blocked for Flash.
    Step 9
    Select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
from the Safari menu bar. If any extensions are installed, disable them.

  • Apple site doesn't recognize QT?

I went to the Apple site to learn from a video Apple posted showing how small businesses.... yada yada yada. Instead of help for using email etc., I got an error saying my QT Pro on my new Mac Book Pro running Leopard.... (get the irony?).... could not open the QT video.
I feel like a putz for buying all this stuff.
The screen shot says it all, but I can't post it here. Perhaps elsewhere?

I have exactly the same problem everywhere; in fact my browser windows are constantly littered with greyed-out QT logos with a question mark in them. What's happened? Can someone tell us if we're doing something wrong?

  • Built-in Isight for External Monitor with Macbook closed

    Hello Apple Community,
I'm having trouble using my built-in iSight through my external monitor. My set-up is that the Macbook is closed and I run everything through an external monitor. I'm unable, however, to use that external monitor's iSight with any applications. They either say that there's no camera available or something along those lines. The iSight shows up in the system profile under USB, and I've tried resetting various things, but all of that seems geared more to the macbook than to the monitor. I've also woken up the macbook (where the iSight works fine) and tried mirror/non-mirror modes. When I use a camera-based application via the macbook, it doesn't give me an option of which camera to use, relying only on the macbook's. Is there a way to use the external monitor's camera instead?
    Thanks,
    Abe

Does one of these help you, Abe?
    (1) Your Profile "Products" info shows " MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.1) ".  If this is correct, you may be using an early MBP and/or display.  Have you checked for the firmware update? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3957
    (2) Consider Apple's suggestions from the "If the built-in iSight camera, microphone, speakers, or USB ports on the display are not working:" section of http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2400
    (3) If you are using a non-Apple external display, contact the seller or manufacturer for help.

  • Awake with macbook closed? Or suggestions

When i was in the apple store today one of the specialists asked did i have my comp setup so that i could close the lid and continue the download. I said no, and when i came home after the visit i tried to do just that but can't. Does anyone know how i can close the comp without putting it to sleep. Mainly because i have been in a place with poor wifi and my downloads take longer than normal, so i would rather set it up so that when i am downloading something, i can close the laptop and have it still resume the download. Also, is there a way to turn off the display but still have the downloads running? Thanks in advance.

There are third-party hacks that prevent sleep when the display is closed — InsomniaX and Caffeine are two of them. Apple doesn't provide such a feature, except for clamshell mode, which requires the connection of the AC adapter and an external keyboard, mouse and monitor. If you install one of the third-party sleep preventers and then put your still-running computer into a backpack or case that prevents ventilation, it may overheat, cook itself, and/or cause a fire.
You can't disable the open display while the computer is operating except under special conditions that involve putting it temporarily into clamshell mode. But you can, at any time and under any conditions, dim the display backlight down to nothing. For your purposes, that should amount to about the same thing.
