Apple tv dropping wifi

How do I keep my apple tv from dropping its wi-fi connection? All my other devices hold their wi-fi signal.

Had the same issues, got my originial AppleTV replaced yesterday - but the trouble with Wifi continued. So I did some investigation. Not sure if this is of help for anyone but it seems that I am able to provoke the "WiFi connection" drop. That's my setup:
AppleTV 3rd Gen, Software Version 6.0.1;  static IP address
Airport Extreme 2nd Gen Software 7.6.4; Bridge Mode activated; static IP address; WPA2 enabled; SSID not broadcasted;
A bunch of other Apple devices on the same Wifi network - all working without any issues!!
1st scenario: Mac-Address filtering/access control disabled on Airport Extreme
--> Apple TV finds and connects immediataly to the network.
2nd scenario: Mac-address filtering/access control enabled on Airport Extreme:
--> Apple TV does not find/connect to network (YES, correct AppleTV MAC-address has been entered into Airport Extreme's filter list)
Interesting additional observation: Using a LAN scanner software I get confusing results:
In the 1st scenario the AppleTV shows up with its correct MAC-address (together with the correct assigend static IP-address)
But in the 2nd scenario I get a strange result: The correct static IP address of the AppleTV is now assigend to the MAC-address of the Airport Extreme. VERY STRANGE!!
I reported this to Apple support today - they need to check and will come back.
Anyways - perhaps you can check if disabling the MAC-addess filtering/access control let Apple TV connrct to WIFi again.
In my case disabling solved the WIFI connection issue of Apple TV but is not an acceptable solution as I rely on MAC-address filtering/access control due to security reasons.

  • Apple TC drops wifi but green light glows

I have a 2 TB Apple Time Capsule as my primary wireless router.  Recently the TC has started to not send out any Wifi signal at all.  All Wifi devices that are connected to it cannot even see the TC nor can the Airport Utility.  The green light continues to glow happly!  I can reset the device by unplugging and replugging the power, it then reconnects and everything works wonderfully until the next random time it happens.
I read some support threads that suggested fixing the WiFi channels as this may be happening when it switches channels, which I did.  The problem still occurs.
    Any input?

If it is in warranty, I would certainly be looking to get Apple to replace it. It does sound like it is faulty.
Does the TC get hot? They can be warm to hot during a backup.. but with the disk spun down should not be over hot.. stick it up on feet.. the rubber base does not help much in getting rid of the heat unless you sit it on a chunk of copper or aluminum. Otherwise put a set of bottle tops / pencils / rubbers. whatever you can find to elevate it and allow air underneath.. you want it >8mm off the bench at least (about 0.3-0.5") Make sure it has plenty of air access around the sides and is not in a restricted access area where the local environment is heating up as well.
How long after each restart does it take to stop working? Is it a fairly consistent time.. ?? That could be helpful info.
Have you tried a full lock down of the wireless?
I am deeply suspicious of devices that auto everything.
So use SMB names.. short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.
Use a different name for 5ghz.
Use fixed channels which you are doing.
Use a fixed wireless mode.. this is not something we usually touch. But worth it in your testing.
Use WPA2 Personal security with 10-20 character pure alphanumeric passkey.
    So normally something like this.
But now add radio mode into the mix.
This does reduce the wireless at 2.4ghz to G.. but it is just a test. See if wireless still drops out..
Does 5ghz also drop out at the same time? Since you can now force some of the devices to 5ghz.
if so I would be blaming hardware.
But iStumbler may show you more.
And the v5 utility can show you log info of the wireless clients.
You will need one computer linked by ethernet to get the chart when wireless drops naturally but you can also check the main log.
v5 utility being of course useful tool cf v6 useless toy.
To load v5 utility into ML.. do this.. although there are plenty of methods if you do a google for the info.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 (now 6.2 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

  • Apple TV dropping WiFi connection every two minutes

    Hey there,
So I bought an Apple TV a couple days ago. Product looks great and looks absolutely gorgeous on the TV I have. My only problem (and its a HUGE problem) is that the device drops my WiFi every two minutes. Specifically when watching videos.
So in effect I cant stream any video - be it from YouTube, iTunes, NFL, Vimeo or even over AirPlay - because every time I do the signal drops and I'm thrown back to the main screen.
My WiFi pretty good. I have an iPhone, an iPad, two PC laptops and a Samsung smart phone that use the same network without any issues.
Please help me with this problem. I really really like the product but its practically useless with this issue.

Other devices working doesn't rule out a network issue.
Try connecting Apple TV via ethernet
Go to istumbler, netstumbler or similar to get a network report. Look for signal strength, noise, and nearby networks.

  • Apple TV Dropping WiFi Connection with Home Sharing

I am currently having trouble with my Apple TV and Home Sharing. My Apple TV will connect to my WiFI network (which is only 802.11g) and stream from either the iTunes store for movies, and from YouTube using that connection fine. My trouble starts when I try to connect to another computer with Home Sharing. When I try to connect to another computer (my MacBook Pro, for example, which is also on the same WiFi network) to stream content across the network, the Apple TV looses it's connection, and then the router kicks everything else on WiFi off the network. I am using WPA for WiFi security on the router. I turned off WPA, and everything streamed across the network fine, no drop outs on the Apple TV. I can stream from a desktop connected to the router via ethernet fine (with or without the WiFi security enabled). I think it is probably the router (it is just a little DLINK I picked up a little while back), but I wanted another opinion or some troubleshooting ideas before I do.

I am having this problem too, I also have a dlink router. Everything works fine until I try using homeshare, after a minute or so I lose all wifi router connections on everything connected via wifi, iPad,iPhone and aptv2. I have to wait for the router to reset/restart to use again. It's very odd, it even happens if I connect the atv2 via Ethernet so it's not a wifi glitch.
    Any suggestions?

  • HT204400 Apple TV drops strong wifi signal.

Everything up to date with reliable 50Mbps internet, Apple TV works with Cat 5 cable, but drops streams frequently and lags airplay when connected wirelessly. It is 10 feet away from the router. why? Restarted multiple times, checked software version multiple times, restarted router, restarted MBP, it just won't stay connected. Is there a fix coming for this?

I'm not having a problem with the speed of the internet, I'm having a problem with it staying connected... yes I know it's a wifi issue that's obvious... thanks for pointing that out.
Nohting for Apple to fix? hmmmm, well Two Samsung phones never drop the signal, a Samsung TV never drops the signal, a Samsung Tab 2 never drops the signal, an iPad Mini never drops the signal, a Macbook Pro never drops the signal.... but for some reason the Apple TV drops the signal 20+ times during one movie and it won't stream airplay.
Not to mention multiple other posts complaining about it staying connected even using Apple Airport.
So hopefully there are other people who will read this post that can respond with more than just pointing out the obvious. I mean seriously theres gotta be something that can be fixed or something because thus far Apple products have been impressive, this doesn't seem to fit their M.O.

  • Yosemite drops WiFi when I AirPlay to Apple TV

When I AirPlay from my Mac to my Apple TV I lose my WiFi connection. I understand this is because Yosemite now directly connects to Apple TV through WiFi, but is there a way to disable direct connect and just connect to Apple TV through my router like I used to? I like to watch streaming videos online and send them to my TV, but when my internet connection drops because my Mac decided to connect to Apple TV it becomes a tad difficult to stream videos.

I tried everything and this worked for me!
Thanks to whoever found this fix.
Copy and paste these instructions, because you'll be disconnected from the Internet and you'll need to reboot.
Go into your Network Preferences > Select Wi-Fi Service (in the list in the left column) > Click on the options (cog icon) > Select "Make Service Inactive" > Select Apply.
    Select the same Wi-Fi Service > Delete It ( – ). Reboot.
    Return to Network Preferences > Create a New Service ( + ).
Inside the prompt select Wi-Fi under Interface, name the Service Name something other than Wi-Fi. (I named mine Wi-Fi2. Apparently if you retain the previous Wi-Fi name the WiFi dropping will return on reboot.) > Click Create.
    Click Apply.

  • TS3623 Apple TV 5.1.2 update, WiFi issues?  Keeps dropping wifi, constant buffering?

Apple TV 5.1.2 update constantly drops wifi connection, buffers and hangs?  Very Annoying!

I am not sure that this will help you but i let you know how i solve it:
Problem: iPhone 4 doesn't detect wi-fi networks after installed iOS 5.1
My iPhone stopped finding any network once i update it with iOS 5.1, so after read so many posts
around the web about it, and as i really need a wi-fi connection on a daily basis i did the following:
    First step:
    Reboot
    Reset Network Settings
Turn Airplane mode On and Off
None of this steps worked for me
    Second Step
Restore iPhone to factory settings, not from backup.
The iPhone detected wifi networks, but once i connected to one of them, after 1 minute
or two, he lost the connection and stop seeing any wi-fi networks again.
    Third step
New restore from factory settings, not from backup.
The iPhone detected again the wifi networks, but this time instead of choosing from the list
of wifi networks, i choose to click on "other.." and insert the name of the wifi network and password
    manually.
I went to turn off bluetooth as well, since i heard on the web that the bluetooth connection ON, will mess with the wifi on iOS 5.1.
No any problems until now, after 3 days of this procedure.
Probably there is a problem when the iPhone connects to the first wifi network we choose, and the drops everything. But once i make it like i mention on the third step, no more problems.

  • My ipad 2 and ipod touch keeps on dropping wifi connection,  would getting an apple router or maybe airport express help?

ipad 2 and ipod touch  keeps on dropping wifi, would upgrading to an apple router/airport express help?  all my other pc's work well with my current network.

Have you checked for a firmware update for your current router?
What make, model, version router do you have?

  • MacBook Pro and iPhone 4S Repeatedly drop WiFi

First off I didn't know what category to put this question in because it really is AirPort, MacBook Pro, and iPhone 4S at once.
So I have a different home network setup than most, I have 2 routers on my network. Now before you start pointing fingers, all other devices work perfectly on it. I have two Netgear WNDR3300s, only one is DHCP, UPnP, NAT, etc... And they have separate channels. My family members' iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPad 2, iPod 4, and iPad Mini, all work perfectly on this network at a blazing 20Mbps (Tested using Ookla's SpeedTest Website and iOS App). My iPhone 4S and MacBook Pro continuously drop the wifi signal at random times and I am no more than 5 feet from the nearest router. Here are the details in a less condensed form...
    Network:
    Cable Modem Arris TG722
    v
    Cat 5e Cable
    v
Router 1 (DHCP, NAT, UPnP, Channels 6g and 157n) Netgear WNDR3300 DualBand Router
    v
Cat 5e Cable (Connected to 1 of the 4 LAN ports on BOTH routers)
    v
Router 2 (No DHCP, No NAT, No UPnP, Channels 11g and 149n) Netgear WNDR3300 DualBand Router
    v
    MacBook Pro
    iPhone 4S
    MacBook Pro
    - Mid 2010
    - 13 Inch
    - OSX: 10.8.5
    - Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    - Memory: 8GB 1067MHz DDR3
    iPhone 4S
    - Bought about 3 months after release
    - Condition: Like New
    Routers
    Netgear WNDR3300
    Firmware up to date
    Non-interfereing channels
    Connected via CAT-5e
DCHP, NAT, UPnP only on one.
Something to note is that I do have AirPlay on my network passing through a first gen AirPort Express and second gen Apple TV on an Ethernet CAT-5e connection. I most often drop wifi when streaming to the AirPort Express, however it also occurs at other times. The devices do drop it randomly however, I was streaming music and it dropped 3 hours in when I did nothing.
I consider myself very tech savvy, of course that is opinionated. At this point I am clueless because of the randomness of the connection refusal and how all other devices are ok.
Not sure if I mentioned it but if I try to recconect to the netowkr after it drops it either says "Timed out" on Mac or "Unable to connect" on iPhone.
I am so confused now... If you have any ideas please let me know!
P.S. The two devices operate much better on my network when it only has one router, but I must have 2 for the range and versatility.
If any more information is needed please let me know.

I upgraded to OSX Mavericks and I am still having the same problem on both devices. It is occuring more and more often to the point where I almost broke something .
Something weird to note is that every time it drops, I will try to reconnect. When I do so, it says failiure still, but the new window on Mavericks has the diagnostics button. As soon as I hit that button the wifi jumps right back, working perfectly. (Of course then I will lose it 5 minutes later).
If anyone has any ideas please let me know!!!

  • IPad Air after upgrade to ios 8 continue to drop WiFi connection

On September 19, I upgrade my ipad air to ios 8, and it had been dropping Wifi connection ever since.  I was browsing using Chrome and next thing the browser hang up; then error message informed me to no network connection.  By the way, my network was strong (5 bars), because I was streaming to my Roku in HD without any issues.  At the same time, my Airplay do not want to stream the content in full screen either. It only mirror what have see on my ipad, not allow me to go full screen on TV.  I hoped Apple will step up and correct this issue as soon as possible; I miss the good old day of reliable upgrade from Apple.

Yes, and hopeful 8.1.1 will help.  It's supposedly in beta testing.

  • My mac mini keeps dropping wifi connectivity

    Hi Folks,
My new Mini keeps dropping wifi connectivity so I lose the connection to Apple TV and even just browsing on Safari seems painful hoping a page will load before losing connectivity. I reset my router, restart the mini and it intermittently keeps happening. Has anyone come up with a workable solution?
    Thanks

Hi Leo, this has worked for a few...
Though all of these steps may or may not be needed, I'm including them all.
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).
    Click OK.

  • ISE 1.2 IOS device re-auth (device drops WiFi)

My guest users use web-auth for authentication. An issue I've run into is that IOS devices drop WiFi during lock/sleep. This means if they were authenticated, then they will have to reconnect/reauthenticate to the SSID. I would like to find a way for these users to automatically reauthenticate (assuming they are still within their original session's timeout value). Think two hour meeting. Is there a way for me to set this up in ISE policy?
    Something like:
IF user was authenticated within the session timeout value (6hrs)
THEN automatically let them back on without having to re-authenticate
    Thanks.

OK, I'm seeing a lot of "Correct Answer" type replies in another similar posting, but not a complete answer.  I have a similar issue, but only on a 2504 running 7.4.110.  I have two 5508s running 7.4.115, and they don't seem to have this issue, however I could be wrong.  Also, I'm running ISE 1.2, patch 2, soon to be patch 3 with the 5508s.  I no not yet have ISE working with the 2504, but that is coming.  We're not running Flex-Connect.
My users are a mix of guest users via the ISE Sponsor Portal, and employees, who authenticate via Active Directory.  I am having problems putting the specifications into user-friendly terms.  If I have to add a Registration Portal, I need to be able to explain who would use it and under what situation(s)
So, I guess what I'm looking for is what is the minimum OS I should be running on each platform to support ISE, WebAuth, and Apple & Android devices.
I don't seem to have Security --> Local Policy on either of my builds, so I'm guessing that this was added in 7.5.  Given ISE 1.2, is there some mimimal WLC builds I should be using.  Alternatively, is there ANY reason to NOT upgrade to 7.6
Tarik's link seems to include ISE 1.1.1, so I'm not sure how applicable it is to ISE 1.2.  I'm not opposed to using device registration for employee devices, but I do not believe I wishto do this for guest/sponsored devices.  I am not planning on a full BYOD rollout, so I do not wish to complicate things with an advanced license.  My understanding is that with AD integration, I probably don't need a MyDevices portal.
In short, I'd like guest devices to have to auth at most once per day, and employees should be good until their AD credential expires.  Again, I thought I had this working on a pilot using WLC 5508s and 7.4.115, but this definitely is not working in WLC 2504 with 7.4.110.
The only other thing I'd want to to be able to put the guest devices on one VLAN/SSID and the employee devices on another, but that's not as important at this time.

  • Dropping WiFi Connections after new Mac Min and Upgrade

First of all does anyone know why this discussion was archived when there was never a solution posted?
        https://discussions.apple.com/message/12586041?tstart=0#12586041
Secondly (why I found that thread among many others addressing the same problem). I received a new Mac Mini for XMas (cool, I needed it) which worked fine with my other computer and devices (2 iPads, 2 iPhones, 2 Win7 Laptops and 2 Win7 desktops) for a couple days, so I thought. Now all these devices got along very well until Mr. Mini comes along. Then I note wireless drops occasionally, it seemed to come back so I wasn't too upset, yet and decided to deal with it later and enjoy my vacation.
Now, after I allowed Leopard to do its upgrade (I had deferred that) I now have all the above devices dropping wifi and physical LAN connections as long as this Mini is powered on. I shut it off, Internet is blazing, I turn it on, Internet falters and screeches to a halt.
Since all my other devices have worked cooperatively for several years and this device comes along and crashed the party im pretty convinced its not my router or computers. I am not interested in trial and error here. i have many better more important things to do and this is Apples responsability to figure out. I am a very savy IT dude (career professional) and want to get to the bottom of this for everyone.
Soooo.... What changed? Why does this device kill my network when it is turned on (note, no alterations from out-of-the box to any network protocol or config.) and why does a thread (one of many) without a solution get trumped on by Apple?
