Apple TV DVD Streaming

Hello All
Is there any plans in the future to allow ATV to be able to stream DVD's from my hard disk?
Also does anyone use Nito tv for this function? how does it compare?

If you mean playback of DVD content copied to a hard drive this is unlikely as it is illegal to copy commercial DVDs in many areas.
AppleTv supports limited formats for video, and I think if legal MPEG2 playback was planned it would have been there from the start.
It would be neat of course if Apple and other media playback device makers could strike a deal with the studios etc to allow users to rip content say to a protected format only playable on a particular device or computer but I can't see it happening (though I think there is a commercial hard drive based device which stores DVD's like this and is actually allowed to).

  • Apple TV can stream physical DVD played on my iMac?

I think some of you may like me living outside US and outside Apple's iTune market. I wonder if we can still buy this Apple TV to stream physical DVD movies played on our Macs (through iTune, I suppose) to our TVs. If positive, it will at least attract some sales from consumers globally.

I'm just wondering if this might be a future "software" upgrade. As we have an 18 month old LCD tv, our HDMI jack is being used by our HD cable and our component jack is being used by our DVD player. It appears that an HDMI splitter is a couple hundred bucks and the component cable splitter doesn't look a whole lot cheaper. It would be nice if we could just use our computer as our DVD player and eliminate the need for a DVD player all together, thus eliminating our "out of jacks" problem. New LCD and Plasmas have multiple Digital ins. But a year or two back it wasn't so much of an issue.
    Thanks.

  • Using Multiple Apple TVs to stream iTunes Music

    Hey there All,
I'm considering using multiple(at least 2) Apple TVs to stream iTunes content around my home. The layout is ranch style and I'd like to put 1 in my Media room where I have my main HT set-up and another in the dining area. Will I be able to have these act like Airport Express units and have same music playing on both, if both are on? I'm considering this as I often entertain and am looking for an inexpensive solution to a Crestron or Sonos system and I'd also like to be able to move 1 Apple TV unit to a different location like the Deck in the Summer & just connect my old boombox with RCA inputs.
TIA for any assistance or suggestions.

    Hey there BCFind,
Thanks for your response and good wishes. I've tried a couple of AE stations with limited success(dropping connection--still have them, any thoughts there? I'd appreciate them) and I would like to have the video option, have over 100 DVD rips stored on my iMac CD's external drive that play through iTunes(converted to H.264), a Netflix sub and we love the Jazz stations on iTunes radio. I use my 1st gen iPod Touch and Apple's Remote app with my iMac for music in my bedroom/office but, we'd like to occasionally also eat & watch a movie together as well have the music, get a 2 for 1-- music for entertaining and movies for the family. So, the original question... you're saying 2 ATVs will play the same music if both are on, in the same way that the Airport Express does?
Your set-up seems sweet. Thanks again.

  • Can you use 2 apple tvs on the same network with different apple ids and how would your devices know which apple tv to stream to?

    Hi,
I was looking into purchasing 2 apple tvs and was wondering if they can be setup with different apple ids. I need to have mine setup with my id and be able to hook my devices to it , but have the one in a bedroom hooked to a different apple id and have my friend's devices stream to that one and not mine.  Is this possible?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
In order that your Apple TV only streamed from your iTunes Library and your friends to your friends, you would both have to have different homesharing ID's.
So far as devices go, any device on a network can stream over AirPlay to an Apple TV, to ensure each of you couldn't stream to the others device you can enable a password via the Apple TV which would then need entering when you used a device for AirPlay.
Shouldn't be a problem to do what you want to do.

How can I see what song is playing if I am viewing my photos in slide show mode on Apple TV and streaming music from my iTunes?
    Thanks.

Thank you Winston. I guess we need to ask that this feature gets added at least as an option in an upcoming release. When someone is using shuffle, it helps to know what is playing while viewing pictures.
Where is my Apple request button when one needs it ? :-) Cheers, C

  • Now that Apple branded DVD media (DVD-R/-RW x2, 4, 8) No Longer Exists.....

I've had my Powerbook G4 for about 3 years now and have only been successful burning DVDs with Apple's own branded media. Other branded media has had a fairly high fail-rate with my UJ-816 Superdrive and there are no firmware updates for the model. Apple-branded media is just short of a ZERO fail rate (maybe 2-3 lost out of 200-300 DVDs and many hundreds of CDRs - honest, it's been that good).
Apple branded DVD-R/-RW media compatible with x2/x4/x8 (I have an x2 but it's been fine using x8) IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE. I've dug through Apple stores, Best Buy, online stores, eBay, MacMall, J&R Electronics, etc. and nothing.
So, does anyone else with one of these slower burning Superdrives have any recommendations for other branded media that they've found works successfully?
Thanks - I'm desperately trying to complete backup of a 30,000+ track audio library to DVD and this is really the wrong time to find the only media that worked is no longer marketed.

Sorry to hear that, but there's surprising hope: you want to shop by manufacturer, not Brand. Indeed, check www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm. Apple sold Mitsubishi discs. These are currently sold as Mitsubishi-Kagaku Media (MKM) by Verbatim & Infiniti (of England). You can shop by 'brand' locally, if you rewrite the 'brand' table on 'digitalfaq' by replacing the manufacturer by those manufacturers it subcontracts to (I assume the worst). :-[ Sony, Kodak, Panasonic, & Verbatim sell only the best, often Taiyo Yuden: reportedly the best manufacturer! But Taiyo Yuden can be bought directly from such internet stores as www.supermediastore.com/, where 200 8x Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs in black, plastic sleeves are currently on sale for $40: that's US$ 0.20 each. Internet superstore like this are supposed to list the media codes, but all I've ever found is MKM listed. Other codes just list the brand's name: some brands don't even manufacture discs, and others that manufacture even the best discs subcontract to poor manufacturers when the company is in need. Taiyo Yuden doesn't subcontract. If you buy a mystery brand (which I don't believe is economical), check the return policy: they will replace discs that fail from visible damage, but who has the time for that? As a final note, many drives burn my MKM001s at 8x (because, I suspect, they consulted Verbatim when writing their firware table), whereas my LaCie writer (Samsung OEM) writes it at 2x (because, I suspect, they more responsibly consulted MKM for their table). If you burned Apple's DVD-Rs at 8x, check with Apple or http://www.cdfreaks.com/ and ask what speed your drive will burn the Taiyo Yuden DVD-R or the Verbatim DVD-RW, claimed to burn at 4x and currently selling for about US$1.00 each. I've a list of reputable internet stores selling blank media which I initially found, then added to from Germany (which are bilingual stores) & France (which wouldn't think of it). Apple likely prefers I offer such lists by e-mail. You're welcom to write, from a .Mac alias. PS. Check out 'Office Depot' brand on the first website.

  • Sony DW U-10A won't read Apple Software DVDs-

This is on the iMac 17", OS X 10.3.9 Panther, 768MB RAM, 40+ gigs free HD space, no haxies, only Epson printer connected.
The internal Sony DW U-10A drive will read CDs, burn CDs, play movie DVDs and burn DVDs but for some reason will not 'see' Apple SW DVDs. (I haven't anyone else's to try.) I have tried iLife 04, the iMac's original install disk and my iBook's retail Tiger disk. Interestingly, after burning a SW DVD it hangs at 'verifying'. Having successfully burned it can't 'see' what it has burned to verify! The burning is successful, my iBook reads it OK.
When I put a SW DVD in, there is no spinning, no noise, just silence. Then the DVD gets ejected after about a minute. Disk Utility doesn't see the disk either. I can't even run HW test, (it's on the DVD!)
I have tried a head cleaner but that is a CD head cleaner, are DVD head cleaners different?
I have read all the stuff about the problems others are having with the Pioneer drives but nothing seems to apply here.
    I have repaired permissions.
I have tried booting it from a 10.4.6 clone of my iBook on an external to do a disk repair but I get a big Ø (the other way round…) and spinning gear wheel(?)
Does anyone have any advice, tips or tricks to try? Unfortunately I can't pin this fault down to any particular time, this weekend is the first time I've loaded a SW DVD in months.
    Any and all help appreciated.
    Adrian
    iBook G4 1.07GHz, 30 GB, AE, 768mb; & iMac 17" 'igloo' G4:768mb 80 GB (10.3.9)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Belkin WiFi F5D7632, Epson C86, Shredder! Oh, and the iMac's got a droopy arm…

    Hi Adam,
Thanks for the suggestion, no dice I'm afraid.
Yesterday I downloaded and reinstalled the 10.3.9 combo. Ran permissions and a safe boot. No Apple SW DVD read.
Today, first I did a disk repair from the retail Panther CD 1, no repairs were made. (I ran it twice just to be sure).
I then did as you suggested with iMacs original install DVD (Jaguar) in the iBook's drive, the iBook in Target disk mode and restarted the iMac holding the Option key. The iMac saw the iBook's Tiger drive, the Jaguar disk and obviously, it's own Panther drive as possible start ups. I chose the Jaguar disk, though I was expecting AHT to come up as an option.
After a long time on the spinning gear wheel I eventually got the Ø (inverted) sign with the wheel spinning endlessly.
So the iMac will not 'see' SW DVDs no matter whose drive they are in. Nor, (see my OP) will it boot from a clone of of another OS, even though it sees it as a bootable option!
    Curiouser & curiouser…
Unless you or anyone else has any further advice I'm drawing a blank here I think. If I can pry 'the other half' away from 'her' iMac long enough I'm going to try a back-up, erase and install of Panther as that's the only OS I've got on CD. I think I've got 40+ GB free on my external.
    Thanks again for you help,
    Adrian

  • Apple's DVD Player: audio in-sync. External DVD Player: audio out of sync

I exported my Sequence from FCP to QT, used compressor to make m2v and ac3 (Dolby) files, then used DVD SP to burn a DVD.
When I play the DVD on my Mac Pro using Apple's DVD Player, MPEG Streamclip or VLC, the audio is in sync with respect to the images, FCP's Canvas and FCP's QT export.
But when I play the DVD using any of three different external DVD players, the audio momentarily drifts out of sync by 30 to 40 frames, near the end of my 30-minute program, but is back in sync after about a minute, when the shot at hand ends and the next shot begins.
More specifically, it's as if the video lags by about 30 to 40 frames, but there is no stuttering or other obvious visual sign that this is happening.
Why would Apple's DVD Player, MPEG Streamclip or VLC play the audio in sync while these external DVD Players play it out of sync?
I should add that in order to verify that the TVs to which the external DVD players are attached are not the source of the problem, I monitored the audio using headphones connected directly to the audio outputs of the DVD Players as well as connected to the headphone jacks of the TVs, and there was no difference, i.e. in both cases, the audio drifts out of sync momentarily, as I describe above.
I can only think that DVD SP is muxing the m2v and ac3 file in such a way that software DVD players can demux it without difficulty, but hardware DVD players cannot.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
    Thanks.

Please tell us what was wrong.

Can I connect my Lacie Space II - 2 Tb to an Apple TV and stream my movies in the LaCie to my TV through the Apple TV?
I would really like to have an apple TV to stream from and use also as media player in replacement of mt PC. Is this possible?
    Thanks

Only if the content on the drive is part of your iTunes library and iTunes is running to manage the content for the Apple TV. You can't replace your PC with the drive for use with Apple TV.
