Apple tv - extremely slow syncing

I have a disk containing my itunes library connected to an airport extreme , and am syncing my library to my apple tv. My computer is 802.11n compatable (macbook) , my airport is 802.11n compatible and supposedly the apple tv is 802.11n compatible too.
When transfering files from my wireless disk it takes around 2 minutes to transfer a gigabyte of data , but when syncing the apple tv , a movie the size of 2 gb takes a few hours. I´ve tried running diagnostics on the apple tv and it says everything is ok , I´ve tried various fiddling with the settings in the airport with no luck . . .
Is this normal ?
Anyone got a clue what might be wrong ?
thanx

I don't consider my solution as the silver bullet as most of us treat the disease from looking at the symptom instead of the root cause and for a given symptom there can be many ailments. Here is what I did...
I replaced my Linksys router with a new Apple Airport Extreme router (simultaneous dual band) which is an expensive toy. The problem went away. It looks like that the wifi link from my mac mini to the router was unreliable and actual throughput was slow even though the wifi connection between my ATV and the router was strong (as they were close to each other). To support this idea, I found that my ATV never had any issue downloading movies from iTunes server online. My problem used to be playing my own home videos from my mac mini over wifi streaming.
One easy way to test this contention would be to connect the mac mini to the router using wired LAN. But, in my case I would have to run over 100ft of cable thru multiple rooms and I wasn't motivated to experiment with that test.

  • Apple TV and/or Airport extremely slow syncing - Unique or common problem?

This is my first post and I'd appreciate help.
My Apple TV has worked fine for the last few weeks but started playing up last weekend. It now syncs either very slowly or not at all. Have tried every workaround suggested in this forum. Also spent 3 hours on phone with Apple technician this morning who could not diagnose problem (but has gone away to consult internally).
Apple TV is (was) connected wirelessly to Airport Extreme which is connected via ethernet cable to iMac, with all the latest software installed on everything.
Factory resets of both Apple TV and Airport Extreme worked for a bit, then same problem re-emerged. Direct ethernet connection of Apple TV to Airport Extreme also worked for a bit, but then same problem appeared, and then Apple TV disappeared from Devices list in iTunes and could not be recovered even after reboot. Direct connection to iMac also worked initially, but then same problem (slow syncing, then disappears from Devices list) re-emerged. Can see Apple TV in Devices in iTunes if wireless connection is restored, but only with extraordinarily slow syncing.
Anyone know what the problem might be? Is it unique or common? Any suggestions for fixes?

By current release software I was referring to the AEBS firmware, the Apple TV software and iTunes. You can run the "Check for Updates" tool for each to make sure that they are up to date.
Since you reported the same problem when connected either by Ethernet cable or by wireless that would obviously rule out any wireless problems such as RF interference. The only possibilities left would be that something else is loading down your network or there is a hardware failure somewhere.
If there is a bad component in the AEBS I would expect it to affect your computer as well as the Apple TV. If there is a hardware failure in the Apple TV I would expect it to show up whether syncing, streaming or watching movie trailers or YouTube videos.
One other possibility might be that if you have any anti-virus software on your computer it might slow things down if it is scanning the files while they are syncing or streaming.

  • Extremely Slow Sync on Windows 7

    Hello
I recently installed Windows 7 on my system. Before that I had Vista and before that I had XP, both systems synced really quickly with no problems.
Now that im on Windows 7, iTunes is syncing music to my iPod touch very slowly. Iv posted this on other forums and tried removing and installing all traces of apple software and iv tried disabling backup. Nothing is working.
Please help, im starting to really get annoyed with this.

iTunes itself was running extremely slow on my computer. I would click a song to play and it'd take several seconds to register the click.
It wasn't an issue with the computer, as it is a new i7 (quad-core/hyperthreading)computer with 16gbs of ram and running Windows 7. Following advice from elsewhere, I tried running iTunes 'as an administrator'.. and it sped up considerably.
    To run as administrator:
    * Right-click iTunes icon
    * Select 'Properties'
    * Click 'Compatibility' tab
    * Check 'Run this program as an administrator'
    * Click 'ok'.
A side note, running as administrator will cause you to click 'ok' on the UAC notice when you first run the program. To me, this was preferably to the program running so slow.

  • Extreme slow syncing & huge backup folder

The problem I'm having is 2-fold: 1. My 3GS syncs extremely slow; approx. 12 hrs.! And 2.: If I check the backup folder in home/library/applicationsupport/MobileSync, it's huge: over 1 Gig. Allthough I have ~ 11 Gigs on the phone, I don't understand this size. Shouldn't it be no more than a couple of megs? If I'm correct, the backup folder only contains info about the apps and other content that's on the phone. The apps are in iTunes/Mobile Applications. I have no explanation for this problem, tried deleting de backup folder and fresh syncing, but to no effect. Can anyone help out? Thanks in advance! Patrick

This link provides the data included with your iPhone's backup, which includes photos and/or video in your iPhone's Camera Roll, contact info, various iPhone settings, recent calls, call favorites, SMS/MMS, Safari history/cache/cookies, email account settings, wi-fi network settings, 3rd party app settings and data created and stored by a 3rd party app.

Something may be wrong with your backup or with some of the data included with the backup since it shouldn't take 12 hours or anywhere close to that. My iPhone's backup takes well less than 5 minutes. You can delete the existing backup and create a new backup to see if this makes any difference. An initial new backup will take longer that succeeding backups.

  • New Apple TV EXTREMELY SLOW - both synching and downloading

I've downloaded the software update (now on 2.02), I've restarted the AppleTV, I've even reverted to factory defaults and reinstalled the updated software. All to no avail. The Apple TV is deadly slow - one song every 3 or 4 minutes.
I'm on ethernet using DHCP. Connections switched on gigabit switch and using an Apple Airport Extreme router. All other connections, between computers and across the Internet are up to 9 MB / sec quick.
    Any thoughts?

You're not alone my friend, I am facing the same issue when my ATV decides to show up in my iTunes devices pane. Trying to solve that issue is my main concern at the moment, but as for the extremely slow transfer, I found that to be very annoying when my ATV does sync. I doing so via wireless as well which I can only imagine is slower by a significant amount compared to the setup you have so I think it is something beyond that. Apple needs to analyze these issues because there are a lot of people suffering from the same issues that aren't even near being solved. Much help is appreciated from anyone else reading this post.

  • Extremely slow sync after upgrading to iPhone2.0

Even since I upgrade the iPhone to 2.0 firmwire, each sync is extremely slow. It would say "backing up iPhone" for like 15 minutes before real syncing starts.
What did I do wrong that would cause this lengthy backup? How can I avoid that in the future?

I restored my phone over the weekend. The sync returned to normal when I turned the Apps sync off.
I experimented with the phone by turning on a few Apps syncing. When I sync the first time, it went okay. Then without changing any apps, I made a few changes in the address book, sync'ed again, it was getting slower, made a few more changes in the address book, sync'ed again, the sync time kept growing. I didn't time it, but felt like each sync is doubled.
Since the sync now takes hours after a few syncs from a restore, I am quite sure it will reach the 12+ hour sync I experienced before the restore. The sync is taking so long that it is almost impossible to try things out to see a pattern.
But based on someone's observations, the problem is related to Apps Sync.
And it is doubling after each sync. So within days, your iPhone is render inoperable. So my advice is don't touch the Apps Store with a 10 foot pole until Apple gives an answer on what is going on.

  • Apple TV extremely slow after sleeping

Hi all, My apple tv early 2012 is extremely slow after its slept.. (by slow i mean the wifi connection, both to internet and airplay)... Its so slow you can't hear a song or anything, it keeps cutting in and out.. I don't know why this is and its starting to annoy me..
It has only been happening recently (last two weeks)  so  far I have tried :
multiple restars = works until the next time it goes into sleep mode or left for a long time
restore = same as above (latest software)
disconnect and reconnect does the same thing.. works until I leave it overnight..
Anyone with any ideas what this could be?
I thought maybe it was my router but none of my other products are doing this : iphone 4  and 5 and two laptops..
There has been no physical damage to the 6 months old apple TV
    Thanks all!

I have a macbook. but after the restore home share hasn't been activated.. its with streaming content from the internet with apple tv itself and also airplay runs extremely choppy

  • Blackberry desktop for Mac and Bold 9900 - extremely slow syncing?

Is it just me or does it take forever just to sync a few changes to photos or music to my Bold 9900 using the Blackberry desktop on mac?   Ok granted the first time I added over 1000 songs, several playlists and about 40 photos from iPhoto via the sync software, it took over 3 hrs to sync.  Personally I find that extremely slow, especially when comparing to my ipad or iphone and itunes syncing.   Today I wanted just to remove one photo album from my phone, so unticked it and resynced again.   Over half an hour before it finished!  The registering media with device step takes a very long time, as does the initial preparation stage......  surely there must be something wrong?
Without the wifi sync feature i can't imagine it being practical just to add one song to my phone through this software before popping out with the phone in the car.... I would need to give myself over 30 minutes in advance.
Any advice or help most appreciated.
    Thanks
    Simon

    Hey midinotes,
Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
It can take quite awhile to synchronize media to your BlackBerry.  Especially with the songs, 1000 songs it is normal to take a few hours.
The easiest way I add music to my BlackBerry is dragging the media files to the media card.  It's a lot quicker.

  • Apple TV extremely slow on Wi-Fi

I just bought an Apple TV and the downloads are extremely slow through Wi-Fi. If I start watching Netflix it stops many times throughout the movie thus making it impossible to watch the movie properly.
I connected to my router directly through an Ethernet cable and it worked perfectly. So I think the problem is not the speed of my internet but my Wi-Fi. I have a Belkin that is working on the b/g/n bands.
I tried changing the channels, bandwidth, and even moved the Apple TV away from devices that may have caused interference.
    Any suggestions here?

    Joe,
To make sure I'm following, you connected your ATV2 directly to the Router by Ethernet and it worked great?
Why don't you take your MacBook browser and do a speed comparison? Connect your MacBook directly to your router as you did with the ATV2 and test your internet speed. You might want to turn off WiFi on your MacBook to make sure its using the Ethernet. Use a speed test site like SpeakEasy: http://speakeasy.net/speedtest/
Then immediately, disconnect the ethernet and do the same test on your MacBook over its wireless connection. That should help quantify your WiFi speed issue. Try your MacBook wirelessly close to your Belkin then again close to where your ATV2 is located.
That will give you a start. Report back with your results and we'll all try to help some more!
    Good luck,
    Jim

  • Apple TV Extremely Slow - Please Help

I just received an Apple TV for Christmas and this is my first Apple product that I have ever been disappointed with. It's EXTREMELY SLOW! I am using it wirelessly through my Time Capsule and I have a pretty fast DSL connection. I also have a Roku box and a BluRay DVD player that has internet services as well like VuDu and NetFlix. Movies start almost instantly on all of my devices and play flawlessly except the Apple TV. Movies on Apple TV take about 5 to 8 minutes to start versus only just a few seconds on my Roku box and instantly using VuDu. Is this normal or do I have a defective unit?

Just wanted to let you all know that I have the same Problem
I own a iMac with 802.11 N WiFi With Airport Extreme I also use an iPhone 3GS WiFi G and have recently Purchased an Apple TV I can never get my Apple TV to hit rate speed of 72 or higher. I have tried everything My iMac hits rate speeds of 270 sometimes Using 802.11 N while my apple TV only hit 72 at the highest even My iPhone 3GS hit speeds of 58 to 60 with WiFi G. I have noticed that even if I set up a separate Network using the 5Ghz of the Airport Extreme I get even lower speeds like down to 38 to 40 on my Apple TV I realy dont have a lot of problems downloading movies per say but there have been times were I have had to wait like 20 min just to watch a 720p video from youtube or Movie Trailer. I can go from my TV to my computer using the same network and get the movie downloaded a lot faster using my computer???? What is going on Apple???? I really enjoy Apple products but I have to say I am somewhat unsatisfied with the Apple TV....What am I doing wrong??? I have tried to move my Airport extreme right next to Apple TV and with no speakers or anything around and I never get higher that 72 or so I Want to know is my iMac Airport Extreme Just reading it wrong or What... Please Help Apple????

  • Extremely slow sync for iPhone4 with up-to-date iOS

Windows XP, plenty of memory, all itunes and iphone software up-to-date. Sudden decline in syncing speed has become rediculous. It takes 60 plus hours to sync music of 27GB. If a reinstall causes an automatic sync, I lose my access to all the content of my phone nearly instantly, and have to reset, and resync full conent. CRAZY!  I may switch to Galaxy phones if this keeps up.
Please help. I am not syncing photos, calenders are not a problem, contacts seem to duplicate occasionally without predictability.

The most likely explanation is that iPhoto is recreating the Photo cache for the phone. It only sync images optimised for the phone screen.
When is the last time you actually added all these photos to the phone? This

  • Extremely slow sync from iTunes to iPhone 5

It's taking HOURS (>10 hours so far) to sync my new iPhone 5 to iTunes 10.7.  The process is stalled at "Step 5 of 5 Waiting for items to copy".  I am manually managing content on the phone, and I had a small fraction of my total iTunes content on my iPhone 4 that was deactivated yesterday when my new iPhone 5 became active.  I've tried a restore on the new iPhone 5, shutdown/restart of the computer (new Mac Mini running 10.8.2), hard reset of the iPhone 5, ejecting and reconnecting the iPhone 5.  I'm using the same AppleID as before.
I've got many greyed-out songs on my iPhone 5.  It appears that all the songs that were on my iPhone 4 have been or are in the process of being moved to my iPhone 5.  The greyed out songs have the double-arrow circular icon next to them on the left side, but the icon isn't moving.
The topline message at Step 5 of 5 has changed - now it reads "Syncing Genius Data to Bob's iPhone".  So smething seems to be happening and the process isn't stalled, but it's taking way too long!
I called Apple Support, and they blame iTunes and had me contact them.  I'm not very satisfied with this, as it doesn't really explain the very long time the sync has taken.
Ideas on how to fix this and keep it from happening again would be appreciated.  Is this a one-time thing or will I be faced with this every time I connect to iTunes?

I had a very similar problem when syncing my iPhone 5 with iTunes 10.7.
Here's what I did to fix it after spending a whole afternoon reading what others have done:
    - Perform a soft reset on your iPhone by holding down the home key and the power off button until your phone restarts
    - Turn off Airport wifi on your Mac
    - Restart your Mac
    - Turn Airport wifi back on
Now, try to sync your iPhone.  iTunes should immediately see your iPhone and sync very quickly.
It works for me.  Just don't ask me why or how it works.
    Good luck!

  • IPhone 3GS extremely slow sync

    Hi,
I've got a 32Gb 3GS and I performed a restore yesterday. It's now still doing a sync some 24 hours later and it's still only synced about 13Gb worth of stuff with another 13Gb to go. Is it this slow for anyone else??

Wow that's a lot of data/media to sync at one time.
Are you connected to one of the USB ports on the back of the computer? or are you connected via a Hub?
If you are using a USB 1.0 port/hub, it will take a long time to move the data.
Sometimes you can experience slow transfer issues when using any Hub, even the USB ports on the front of the computer.

  • Extremely Slow Syncing

I'm at a loss as to why my ATV is syncing so slow: at a rate of one song per 45 to 90 seconds (at 256 kps AAC encoding). It does not always drag like this; usually each song takes less that 2 seconds.
My set up is all 802.11n and transmit rate consistently indicates 130.
Chime in with your wise thoughts about this.

reboot your router and reboot you appleTV (press on hold "Menu" and "-"/down button on remote, wait for menu to appear and click on "restart")
    oh and 130 what? M B /s, M b /s
are you using 5GHz or 2.4GHz... if 5GHz do you have wide channels turned on (need 2.0.2 to use wide channels.. there was a bug in 2.0.1).. 5GHz with wide channels is the fastest with the least potential interference from other wireless devices but if your appleTV is separated by lots of walls or very far way.. especially bad is on different floors you may have some issues as 5GHz doesn't have the range of 2.4GHz

  • Extremely slow sync with AAC conversion on

I noticed that my system doesn't sync quickly at all if I'm using AAC conversion but, if I remember correctly, it should only need to do that conversion one time per song, right? It seems like it's redoing ALL of them each time I sync.

Make sure your iTunes is version 9.1.1.12.
