Apple TV freezing on movie playback

My apple TV keeps freezing on movies that have already been previously purchased. So far 3 different movies will play for about 15 to 20 min then freeze. I have to go out to menu then resume play. The movie shows that it has fully downloaded on the bar.

The Apple TV 2 is not supposed to show up under devices in iTunes.
Assuming this is not the first time you have used your Apple TV
You might try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Also try restarting the router.
If the problem persists, try a restore, you may want to try the previous procedures several times before doing this.
If this is a new Apple TV, it may also be that your network router is not allowing access to the timeserver, check that your router allows access over port 123.

  • Itunes 10.1.2 freezes during movie playback

I have several movies that were purchased through the itunes store.
I can't play them using my macbook air 11.6
The first part of the movie will play, then the video and audio will lock up (not comfortable on your ears when this happens)
Opening / closing itunes does not correct this problem.
I've also repaired permissions on my disk.
I am also unable to skip forward on any of my movies. It will play the first chapter then lock up.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.

First try running software update, itunes 10.2 was released last week. If that does not solve your problem then go to ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.plist and drag that plist file to your desktop. Then restart iTune and try again.

  • Problems post apple tv 2 with movie playback

So my apple tv is now gone. Long story short, i cannot get my videos to play on my mac without first pausing them after I tell them to play. It's killing me.... Anybody at all please help.
Thank you thank you thank you

if you don't have an appletv then you don't have an appletv issue ?
maybe you should post your question in the most appropriate forum, which would be the itunes forum ?

  • Question: Apple TV Movie playback freezes very briefly but frequently

Last night I rented a couple of HD movies from iTunes on my 160GB Apple TV and watched them. During playback there were quite a few very brief instants of the picture freezing during movie playback. It's the kind of thing some people may not notice (I don't think my wife noticed), but it got to be kind of annoying to me, to the point where I was anticipating it to happen again instead of enjoying the movie!
One of the movies was about 80% downloaded when I started to watch it, although it said it was "Ready to Play." Also, the hard drive on my Apple TV is about 3/4 full with music.
Anyone have any idea why this would be happening and is there anything I can do to fix the problem?

Thank you for your response. Again, it was relatively minuscule, but just noticeable enough. I will reboot it.
Has this been a noted problem with other users of the old unit?
I've seen very bried video stutters and audio dropouts from time to time.
Another possibility is the encoding but generally it's not that - if you rewind and replay usually it plays ok 2nd time around - if encoding of video was to blame it would always be the same.
I am considering grabbing a new unit in the future. Has Apple noted that the new Apple TV will have "smoother playback" relative to the old unit, or something like that?
Not specifically, it's just a more powerful chip in it than previously - the old AppleTV was probably pushing the limits with the available hardware.
    However, from:
    http://www.apple.com/uk/appletv/
    this might be a hint:
    "All streaming. No hassle.
Everything you want to watch — films, TV programmes, photos and more — streams wirelessly to Apple TV. That way you don’t have to worry about managing storage or syncing to your iTunes library. HD film rentals play over the Internet to your widescreen TV, while music, photos and TV programmes stream from your computer. Either way, all you have to do is click and play. Since Apple TV features a powerful A4 processor, it streams everything effortlessly, without frozen screens or stutters. Video looks crisp and clear. And just like watching a DVD, you can fast-forward through opening credits, pause for a popcorn break or replay a hilarious scene until you memorise every line."

  • Apple TV 2 - Not synching correctly during movie playback

    Hi all,
Recently bought the new Apple TV and have set it up fine. During some movies playback I notice the picture starts to jerk and then the sound is about 1-2 seconds ahead of the picture. To rectify this I have to pause the video, then play. When I pause, I can see the video playing catchup to whichever point in the sound I paused it at.
Is anyone else having this issue? Or does anyone know what the cause of this issue is?
The movie plays fine on my iMac with no synching issues. Im assuming its because my iMac is running and using its processors at that given moment. Some of my movies are MKV files encoded to MP4 via Handbrake.
Some help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

It could well be because your Mac is heavy on resource usage running handbrake which will use as much CPU power as is available to do the job.
Having said that I've seen this occasionally with ATV1 and ATV2, and recently I've wondered if it's iTunes doing something else eg automatically downloading a subscription podcast, and effectively freezing to other processes like AppleTV streaming as it saves a podcast to disc.
The other obvious candidate is the network not quite keeping up with streaming demands and running slightly behind.
Try playback without Handbrake or other intensive processes running - does it behave better?

  • Apple tv freezes when playing rented movies

This is a new issue for me. Every time I rented a movie from the Apple TV(3Gn) the movie doesn't download or freezes. Sometimes the Apple TV restart by itself. Also when I play movie trailers, sometimes it doesn't download the trailer completely.  I ran a speedtest and the downloads are above 20Gbps. By the other hand, Nexflix runs excellent without any problems at all. Please I need help to fix this situation. Thanks!

That may indicate interference. Netflix adapts to the connection whereas iTunes content is fixed. First try rebooting ATV and router. Make sure DNS is set to automatic (settings - general - network).
If on wifi try ethernet. Go to istumbler (Mac) or netstumbler (PC) to get a report, look for signal strength and noise.

  • My Apple TV stops and returns to main menu during movie playback and photo slide show via homesharing. I have a second Apple TV in another room that works fine.

My Apple TV stops and returns to main menu during movie playback and photo slide show via homesharing. I have a second Apple TV in another room that works fine.

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel.

  • Apple TV freezes with some ripped iDVD movies

I have finally begun ripping about 30 home video DVDs made in various incarnations of iDVD. I had hope to transfer these to my gen.1 Apple TV. The more recent, and higher resolution, rips play perfectly on my Apple TV. Unfortunately, the older movies, from as recent as 2006-2008, freeze the Apple TV when I try and play them. All movies work fine in iTines on my Mac Pro.
Any suggestions? Is it a resolution issue that can be adjusted?

  • Apple Trackpad freeze when using brush tools

Apple MacBook Pro Retina, OS X 10.10 Yosemite Beta 1
I've just downloaded Photoshop CC 2014 Trial. I don't use mouse or tablet, but I use Apple Trackpad. When I start using Brush, Clone Stamp, Quick Selection Tool, etc cursor freezes between movements. In previous version of PS (14.2.1) everything is fine. I've made a video to show you this problem.
    Video: PSfreeze.mp4
What should I do to solve this problem?
    P.S. Sorry for my English.

I've just reverted back to the previous build of Photoshop CC and the problem is fixed, so I'm gonna wait till the next release of Photoshop or the final version of Yosemite and give it another shot. My friend tested the same Ps version on his iMac running Mavericks and it worked fine with the Magic Mouse, so it's definitely some kind of incompatibility issue between the current Ps CC build and Yosemite.

Since upgrading to iOS 8 , my Apple TV second gen stops playback every time my iPhone rings.  Anyone else have this happen?

This is happening to me too. Couldn't figure out what was happening at first then I got a phone call and the ring came through the appletv. Playback was stopping when I would open a game or something else as well.
I'm on a 5s with ios 8 and have an appletv 3rd Gen(it is updated too). II often airplay movies from my NAS through my iPad min and that stops when something  happens on my phone even though airplay on my phone is off.

  • Rented movie freezes, Rented movie freezes

I rented a movie, "the adjustment bureU"and it keeps freezing T a point in the movie. I have checked the Dow load screen in my iTunes and nothing is there. If I try to select a chapter ahead I am stuck on a blanco screen. I, then, have to open iPod and select a random music video to get off the blank screen. Please help??

Same thing has happened to me, too.  Only way out that I've found is to go the iPad search screen, enter the name of a movie you know works, go to that movie, then go to rentals and delete the rental movie.  Don't try to restart it fro the point of freezing, or from the beginning.  Just delete it.  Money down the drain.  If Apple wanted to address this little money-sucking bug, it would, but there's nothing official out there.  Many have experienced this problem.

  • Jerky movie playback, but smooth on camera

I have a Panasonic PV-GS250 I bought in USA and have a great movie on the camera - pretty smooth pans and zooms for a beginner, but when imported into iMovie HD, it plays back jerkily. I'm new at this, but friends don't have same problems - although they use Windows? Film is imported into Mac as NTSC (assume 'cos camera bought in USA), but iMovie should handle all of that no problem, so why the jerkiness? I have checked the Import Perferences and Playback preferences and get no difference on Standard, or Highest! Can anybody help - or do I need to switch to Windows???!

No, you don't need to switch to Windows.
But have a look and see what other programs your running on your PB at the same time as iMovie ..movie import and playback uses a lot of resources, so turn off all unnecessary programs, and go to System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items, and turn off all unnecessary background programs, such as those which wait for incoming fax calls, those which monitor keypresses, and - also in Sys Prefs - turn off any other items you may have (..at the bottom of Preferences..) such as 'Snapz Pro' screen-monitoring/recording software.
Remove or disable any non-Apple 'codecs' you may have, such as any DVD-burning video software associated with 'Roxio' or 'Toast'.
Check that, under System Prefs>Energy Saver, you haven't ticked the "Put hard disk to sleep" box, or set any other Prefs to make the computer go to sleep or run slowly (..under 'Optimisation', set it to 'Better Performance').
Also, try going back to the iMovie Discussions index, where this topic sits, and type JERKY into the Search box at top right ..you'll see a whole load of Discussions, and suggestions about how to improve things.
Also, go to Applications>Utilities>Disk Utilities, select the name of your hard disc, and click on 'Repair Permissions', then wait for a few minutes while your Mac makes sure that all relevant files are set to their appropriate 'permissions'.
A good way to separate your movie import/playback from everything else which your PB is doing, is to buy an external FireWire hard disc (minimum speed 5400rpm, or - better still - 7200rpm), plug it in, and use that for storing movie footage. Then if your PB has some internal 'housekeeping' to do (..indexing files, keeping track of things, writing and erasing temporary files..) it doesn't interrupt the movie playback, as it's using the internal disc for its own things, and just grabbing the footage off the external disc without its being interrupted.
Oh, by the way: Welcome to iMovie Discussions!
Oh, and other people may suggest which is the appropriate version of QuickTime to be using (..I can't remember which is best with 10.3.9..) as some later version(s) ..QT 7..? QT 7.0.2..? may give jerky playback, though I haven't noticed that myself..

  • Apple TV freezing & causing TV shutdown...

    Hi,
I have an Apple TV (purchased November 2014) and use a Samsung Smart TV. A few weeks ago the following problem began occurring: content purchased on iTunes would just freeze during playback. Pressing play on the Apple remote would restart the playback but then it would freeze again shortly after. Quite often - but not every time this happened - the TV would also switch off and immediately restart. I've tried all the usual resets. Any ideas?? Thanks

    Hello belair3,
Thanks for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like videos are freezing and not playing back consistently on your Apple TV.
There are several troubleshooting steps found in this guide that can help for this case:
Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation): Troubleshooting video issues - Apple Support
You mention that you've tried some resets, and I'd recommend going through these specific steps in order to resolve or further isolate the issue:
Confirm the settings and configuration of your television.
Check to verify that your TV's video input matches the HDMI connection.
Refer to the manufacturer's user guide for assistance with changing your TV input or picture mode.
Verify that your television meets the Apple TV minimum resolution requirements.
Verify that the Apple TV's power cable and the HDMI cables are securely connected.
When connecting to power, observe the front LED on your Apple TV for activity. If no light is visible, try a different power outlet or power strip.
Connect the Apple TV directly to your television, bypassing any home theater receivers, splitters, repeaters, or switches temporarily.
Inspect all cables for any kinks, tears, or other evidence of damage.
Verify that the HDMI cable being used with your Apple TV is a bidirectional cable. Although rare, single-direction HDMI cables do exist. If unsure, try flipping the connection between your Apple TV and television.
If all else fails, try a different HDMI cable.
    Change the Apple TV resolution:
Press and hold the Menu and Up button on your Apple Remote for six seconds.
The Apple TV will automatically cycle to the next resolution at approximately 20 second intervals.
Press Play on the Apple Remote to keep the current resolution or Select to manually cycle to the next resolution.
Reboot your Apple TV by holding down the Menu and Down button on the Apple Remote for six seconds. Allow the Apple TV a few minutes to restart.
    All the best,
    Jeremy

  • My 27" 2010 iMac  has recently began freezing and movement on the display is molasses slow. We have 500 gigabytes available and no applications running and the problems still persist. Any advice?

My 27" 2010 iMac  has recently began freezing and movement on the display is molasses slow. We have 500 gigabytes available and no applications running and the problems still persist. Any advice?

IF your system is running extremely slow with no applications running other than Finder then I'd suspect a failing HD or you have a runaway process somewhere. Open Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and look to see if you have any applications taking a large %CPU, if you do that is your problem. To test the HD run Apple Hardware Test, please read:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
to learn how to run AHT on your machine, also run it in EXTENDED MODE so it does the most complete test. If no errors are found after the first pass run it another 2-3 times to be thorough.
