Apple TV have 40GB hard drive size??

anyone can tell me why the apple TV just show me have 32.xx gb size left(when it is new),where is the 5gb going to??
Thx
  Windows XP

The formatted drive should contain 4 partitions with the following functions & capacities:
Partition 1: EFI - 34.0 MB
Partition 2: Recovery - 400.0 MB
Partition 3: OSBoot - 900.0 MB
Partition 4: Media - 36.0 GB
Partitions 1 & 3 are used to boot the OS, 2 contains the factory reset source, & 4 stores media content. Thus, you have 3.xx GB of media of some sort in your Apple TV.

  • Does OS X 10.4.5 have a  Hard Drive Size Limitation in a PowerBook G4?

I just read about the new Seagate Momentus 5400.3 (Perpendicular Recording) 160GB 2.5" ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive. It seems pretty cool the way it records and uses less space than standard hard drives.
My question is: In a PowerBook 12" 1.5 GHz PPC G4, running Tiger OS X 10.4.5, will it see the 160 GB HD? Will it see all, or most of it as calculated by Apple's OS? Or will it be restricted to a much lower number. I have a 100 GB Hard drive in it now and it is almost full (I have a few GB's left only) and I need the extra space. Anyone know if it will work as an internally installed replacement drive?
I know it is not supported, but I need the space. Thanks.

It's not something in it, it is the way it handles data.
From the (Seagate) site: "To increase areal densities in longitudinal recording and boost overall storage capacity, the data bits must be shrunk and packed more closely together. However,if the bit becomes too small, the magnetic energy holding the bit in place may also become so smallthat thermal energy can cause it to demagnetize,a phenomenon known as superparamagnetism.
To avoid superparamagnetism, disc media manufacturers have been increasing the coercivity (the field required to write a bit) of the media. However, the fields that can be applied are limited by the magnetic materials making up the write head.In perpendicular recording, the magnetization of the disc, instead of lying in the disc’s plane as it does in longitudinal recording, stands on end, perpendicular to the plane of the disc. The bits are then represented as regions of upward- or downward-directed magnetization.
(In longitudinal recording, the bit magnetization lies in the plane of the disc and flips between pointing in the same and opposite directions of the head movement.) The media is deposited on a soft magnetic underlayer that functions as part of the write field return path and effectively produces an image of the recording head that doubles the recording field, enabling higherrecording density than with longitudinal recording."
I don't see how this can be something that is not able to be formatted by any system. All other drives are universal and can be formatted. It is the interface that changes.
An article on Seagates site states that other manufacturers are coming out with perpendicular drives. Can anyone think of a reason why it wouldn't be OS X compatable?
As to the comment by the first reply as to this being a samll size for OS X, I agree, but this is the biggest 2.5" NoteBook Drive offered to date. And there is rumor of a 200GB model coming down the pipe. These drives could really help our PowerBooks realize there potential if they could be installed in our platforms giving them real storage capacity.
Thank you for your reply's, your insight is greatly appreciated.

  • Hi all not sure where original request went but as a new apple user I have external hard drives that are now "read only" and I can't change or save documents.  Went to Get Info and this did not help.  Can anyone assist with solution, thanks.

I am a new user to apple and have external hard drives from previous computers.  I have many documents I can no longer access and change as they say the drives are read only.  How do I change the read only to read and write etc for these external drives.  I tried Get Info but this did not assist.  Thanks.

    You need an HDMI switch.

My hard drive continually has the floating beach ball and will take massive time to fulfill a request. And then will not boot up...so then I have to do a restore and rebuild hard drive from a past saved time machine version. Works for a little bit...then the floating beachball comes more and more...until it will not boot up again. So then I restore from a previous time machine saved version....and again it works for a day or so ... until it happens again. Now it's happening faster and faster...so I think my hard drive is dying.

  • Apple put a new hard drive into my MacBook Pro and updated the system to Maverick. They did not put iPhoto and iWeb on it but I did have it in Lion. Why and what am I supposed to do?

Apple put a new hard drive into my MacBook Pro and updated it from Lion to Maverick. They did not put iPhoto and iWeb on it but I did have it in Lion. They also didn't put Pages, Keynote or Numbers back on it until I argued with them. Of course, I didn't have my data backed up. My hard drive was destroyed when I tried to install the update of Mavericks myself. I should not have to buy iWeb and iPhoto when I already had them. Suggestions?

    cwhargrave,
have you tried looking in the App Store, to see if you can redownload iWeb and iPhoto there gratis?
If you haven’t done so already, you should purchase an external hard drive to act as a Time Machine backup destination, so that you’ll have an option to rollback to a working environment if a new OS installation is troublesome.

I see 10.6.3 in your profile---is tthat what you are trying to load? If so, it won't work. No PowerPC Mac like your G5 can run a Mac OS version higher than 10.5.8

  • Maximum hard drive size for 350 MHz slot loading?

    Hello,
What is the maximum hard drive size for a 350 MHz slot loading imac?
I am aware of a 128 GB limit on imacs. Does the 128 GB hard drive limit apply to all imac CRTs or just the earlier models?
Here are the specs of my imac:
    Blueberry 350 MHz
    Slot loading CD-ROM drive,
    6 GB hard drive
Is the maximum hard drive size limit of 127GB apply to this particular model?
    Thanks

Yes, the last CRT iMac was in 2001. The first machines with built-in greater than 127 GB support were released in June 2002, as this article explains:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86178
So all CRT iMacs have that limiation.

  • What's the largest hard drive size my 8600 can support?

    hi all,
Years ago,I noticed my 8100 Powermac couldn't support larger hard drives than 2GB so I had to partition. Now I have a 8600 Mac with a 4GB hard with no partition. What's the largest hard drive size my PowerMac 8600 can support?

Here's an 18GB SCSI HD on eBay that says it will work on a PM 8600. http://cgi.ebay.com/18-GB-IBM-SCSI-HARD-DRIVE-Apple-Power-Mac%7CG3%7CG4%7CG5-Wrt y_W0QQitemZ120360935737QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20090109?IMSfp=TL090109111005r37358
You could also install an ATA PCI card and probably go larger.

  • Max hard drive size in G5

    Hello,
Like the G4's before it(not including MDD), do the G5 Quads have a limit on hard drive size? I was wondering what the max size for a hard drive is for the G5 Quad, or can one go up to 4 terabytes?

Remember, I was mostly on a G4 MDD and have some experience with a G5. Now that I have a G5 Quad, I am learning stuff each day.
    Research, Read, and Educate yourself.
If anything, I would have hoped that that was understood from my posts.
Remember, I only have a Sawtooth, but I know about all PPC Macs........

Someone with your post count should at least be aware of "Search Discussions" features.
They should also be aware of the forum rules and etiquette.
But, this next question you can help me with. I am looking for a replacement graphics card which will provide more performance than the stock PCIe Nvidia 6600. Can you provide help for me with that?

  • Is there a Hard Drive Size Limitation when using Tiger?

Im going to be setting up a backup server that users can copy their working files to, so Im going to be installing 2 300gb hard drives on a G4 running tiger. I just want to be sure that there is not some hard drive size limitation with tiger.
    Please let me know!!!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The size limitation is operating system independent. It has to do with the ATA bus on older machines which is discussed in more detail on this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86178
If you have a G4 tower that is older than the resolving of that limitation, you can add a PCI ATA card which supports larger hard drives, many of which are discussed in more detail on http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/
I'm not sure about sharing external hard drives, though the size limitation does not apply to new external hard drives purchased since that limitation was resolved with newer ATA buses.

  • My 40GB hard drive crashed. RMA?

I have a iBook G4 933MHz. As luck would have it, My 40GB hard drive crashed right after the applecare ended. My iBook does not recognize the hard drive.
Kudos to Apple for making it sooooo difficult to replace the hard drive. I actually had to unscrew about 30 screws to get to the hard drive.
It is a Toshiba hard drive. I am sure apple won't cover the warranty on it as the applecare expired. Can I do a RMA with Toshiba? I looked up on the internet but could not find any information.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Do you have the option of taking it into a local Apple retail store?
Same exact thing happened to me and the Genius sent the laptop in to have the hard drive replaced even though my warranty had just expired. Didn't pay a penny. It certainly worth a try.

  • New computer hard drive size short?

I just received my new iMac 20inch with a 500GB hard drive. But when I went through the set-up process, I noticed that the hard drive size was only 449GB. Is this normal? I have not added any software to the computer outside of what it came with and was wondering if what was included with the computer actually took up 51GB of hard drive space.
    iMac A1207   Mac OS X (10.4)

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
This is normal. Hard disks are mis-leadingly sold in decimal notation but data is recorded in binary form (it's in the small print though). My 320Gb drive is 297.9Gb, my 2Gb Nano is 1.86Gb. The approximate conversion calculation goes:
    (500 x 10003) / 10243 = 465.66.
Right click on Macintosh HD and choose Get Info and check the Available, Used and Capacity values.
The remaining 15Gb or so is taken by OS X and pre-installed software like iDVD, Garageband and MS Office trial etc.
BTW you have posted in the iMac (Flat Panel) forum. The users here will be less familiar with the specific issues that Intel Macs may suffer. I'd advise that you post future queries in the iMac Intel forum:

  • Hard Drive Size??

So...after much debating, I've decided to go with the 2.2 GHz macbook pro BUT I'm not sure what to do about the hard drive size. Bigger is better I guess (thinking of upgrading to the 160) BUT do I really need it? I will have a decent size music library and picture library but few movies (don't plan to add many if any). I'll have basic apps and a couple of games as well.
So do I NEED the bigger hard drive? Will I notice a huge difference? Also at issue is whether I can go to the store and get the sucker tonight or if I'll need to order and wait a few weeks. The site is showing a 7-10 day ship time - is that pretty accurate?
On an unrelated note, is anyone else having trouble with the forum? It is taking FOREVER to load although all my other web pages are loading fine (I've got several tabs open in FireFox).

    a) Hard drive - yes, get the biggest you reasonably can. They get full faster than you might expect but if you want the machine immediately then 120gb is the only option - you could always add an external later or spend a couple of hundred and get it upgraded (by an Apple Certified Shop if warranty is a concern). You don't NEED it. You'll be fine with 120 but happier with 160. I think
    b) With any luck supply will loosen up a bit soon. All three stores in my area were out all this week, now they're in stock.
    c) Forum is excruciatingly slow at the moment.
    Best of luck.
