If you have a 1080p24 television (a.k.a. TrueHD), then I would advise keeping the PS3 on HDMI and using component for the AppleTV. The reason for this is that the PS3 can play movies and games at full 1080p, whereas the HD content on the AppleTV is heavily compressed in comparison and limited to 720p. As far as I can see, the only benefit you get by running the AppleTV in 1080p mode is when viewing high resolution photos.
I have also had many problems using the AppleTV in 1080p mode with an HDMI cable and my Sony Bravia 1080p24 LCD television. When I try and play a video, I get a blank screen until I reset the ATV. The only way I have managed to prevent this from happening is by using a component cable and switching to 720p mode.

  • Photos displaying 16:9 through Apple TV HDMI ??? How do it ?

How can I display photos in 16:9 on a SONY Bravia through a HDMI connection from the 160GB Apple TV ?
I was surprised today when I used my iPod Photo on a widescreen TV for a slideshow, and even without HDMI connection, the photos displayed in all screen (16:9).
In my Sony Bravia the photos displayed through the Apple Tv (HDMI connection), use less screen.
    Why is that ?

nothing you can do about overscan really, unless your tv has the option to adjust the picture geometry (most don't).

  • Apple TV HDMI problem

    Hi All
This is my first time posting here. I just purchased an Apple TV and have tried to connect it up to the Pioneer Plasma (PDP50). I have a pioneer set top box, pioneer DVD player and recorder and pioneer Receiver. I can see an HDMI plug on the receiver but when I connect it from the Apple TV to the Reciver nothing happens. With the DVD recorder and Set top box I can’t seem to find the HDMI input. Also i can not locate a HDMI input directly on the TV. I am hoping someone can help me out here, as I have seen great reviews about the Apple TV.
    Thanks for your time.
    Cheers
    Matt

What inputs does your TV have? Apple TV only supports HDMI but some have had it working with a DVI-HDMI adapter. Make sure you can return in case it doesn't work as there is no guarantee.
It should work with DVI too, but there is still a problem with the Apple TV 2.
    From the FAQ on hdmi.org:
    Q. Is HDMI backward compatible with DVI (Digital Visual Interface)?
Yes, HDMI is fully backward compatible with DVI compliant devices. HDMI DTVs will display video received from existing DVI-equipped products, and DVI-equipped TVs will display video from HDMI sources. However, some older PCs with DVI are designed only to support computer monitors, not televisions. Consumers buying a PC with DVI should make sure that it specifically includes support for television formats and not just computer monitors.
Also, consumers may want to confirm that the DVI interface supports High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), as content that requires HDCP copy protection will require that both the HDMI and DVI devices support HDCP to properly view the video content.

  • Apple TV - HDMI to VGA

I just bought an Apple TV 2 and am trying to hook it up to a VGA projector to Airplay stream my mirrored iPad. What is the best converter from HDMI to VGA?

There are certainly some that will defeat HDCP but strictly we're not supposed to mention them - in any case i've never used one so couldn't give a recommendation.
It's really frustrating - the paying customer gets their usage curtailed to prevent them copying - something I'm sure 99.9% of customers would not have the time or interest in doing - those who want to distribute illegal copies will find ways of doing so beyond the capability of home users as many of these outfits will be criminal groups with resources to match.  When you think about it why would a consumer want to waste time and energy producing an inferior lossy analogue copy of digital media which they would have to record in real time then potentially convert to an appropriate media format later.  No, in this day and age the person who wants an illegal copy will find a software solution to rip a disc, buy a pirated disc or get an illegal download.  Win, win, win for those who don't pay, but a hole in your wallet if you do pay and limited usage options.
In the days of vinyl audio I liked to own my albums - CDs have little similar value to me in their physical presentation and merely clutter - what we really need is for all the media companies to get together and offer subscription based eat as much as you can music/video/films/games via the internet at a REASONABLE monthly price.  Won't be perfect for all where internet is poor, but the studios are so behind the times when it comes to providing what the customer wants and can easily be delivered.

  • Why is the input that the Apple TV HDMI is hooked into disbaled?

I plugged my Apple TV power cord in, and the HDMI cored into my TV. I tried hitting Input on my TV, but the only things it allows me to go in is TV, DVD, and Sattelite. The HDMI was plugged into Input or HDMI 7. Why is that disabled and how should I get on?

Some TV's allow you to 'turn off' the inputs that arent in use so when you scroll through you only jump to valid inputs.
if this is the problem there will be an option somewhere on your TV to enable/disable the various inputs.

  • Apple TV  - HDMI or Component

Please forgive me If the issue I have raised is one that has been discussed at length previously. I am new to all things Apple and new to discussion forums.
I am now the owner of an Apple TV.
I intend to use it with my Panasonic HD ready plasma. However, I am currently using all three of the HDMI ports - A Humax freesat HD PVR, a Panasonic BD player and a PS3. Of which I use the PS3 the least.
What connection is the best for Apple TV? HDMI or Component?
Should I simply connect the Apple TV via Component - without having to reconnect anything else.
Or should I hook up the Apple TV via HDMI and re-connect the PS3 via component?
    Sorry for being a muppet!
Any help on this issue would be appreciated.

  • Apple TV HDMI connecting options

I am thinking of buying an Apple TV box, but do not have any spare HDMI sockets on my TV. I think I may be able to connect via a spare HDMI socket on my Home Cinema system. Is this correct and if it is, will it work in the same way as if it was connected directly to the TV?

You can get a splitter to do this.

  • Apple Tv HDMI to receiver then to LCD Tv, Apple Tv HDMI to receiver then to LCD Tv

Has anyone here hooked up thier Apple TV from the Unit to their Home Theater Receiver in then to HDMI Out to TV In?
Instead of using a Optical Cable?

When the apple tv starts up the twirling wait icon shows going through the AV receiver and then the screen goes blank, so it is capable of outputting a signal through the AV receiver at startup. I can't get my AV receiver's on screen menu when ATV is connected directly to the TV. Not so good. Going through a ritual of powering things on and off, disconnecting and reconnecting the HDMI sometimes gets it working.
Using an AV receiver is a pretty common scenario. Apple, can you fix this?

  • Apple TV HDMI 1.4 compliance for Ethernet

I have a 3rd Gen Apple TV.  I understand it is HDMI 1.4 compliant.  I am about to get a new AV Receiver which is 1.4 HDMI compliant and this will be connected to the internet via an ethernet cable.  The question I have is, if I connect the Apple TV to the receiver with a 1.4 HDMI cable (which has inbuilt ethernet) will there then be no need to connect another ethernet cable to the Apple TV?  i.e. the apple TV will be able to get access to the internet via the AV Receiver?

Would have thought that any 1.4 device could do it.  I'm hoping at least my 1.4 tv will be able to get it's internet via the receiver...it's been a long time since 1.4 arrived after all!

  • Splitting Apple TV hdmi to multiple televisions.

Was wondering if anyone has tried this or has had issues trying this. I want to send my appletv to 2 televisions. One in my living room and the other right on the other side of the wall in my bedroom. I just ordered a pro series HDMI splitter to do the job. I can return the product but just curious ahead of time if anyone has tried this yet. Can't justify another apple tv when in reality there should be no reason why I cant split the signal.

Unfortunately your situation is different, you are using a tv via DVI and the OP is asking about using a monitor with DVI. Personally I think there may be inherent issues with this set up, apart from the fact that DVI doesn't support HDCP and a computer monitor has an AR of 16:10 and not 16:9, I have to wonder where you would put that software that comes with a monitor which you would ordinarily load onto your computer to make the monitor work with it.
I haven't actually tried using a monitor so I can't be all that sure, but I'd certainly be cautious about whether this works or not until I'd received information from someone who actually has this set up.

  • Apple TV HDMI to RCA

Ive been doing research on how to connect the new Apple TV to me TV that has RCA inputs. Im not sure if I can use a cord like this (http://www.dinodirect.com/ProductReviews/ProductID-32644.html) or if I need a hdmi to composite connector?
P.S. That is the only cord I could find online

I bought an HDMI switch from Monoprice.com. I do not want to post the link, because I have already had posts removed, as it is not permitted in these forums.
A switch may or may not work for you, as it is hit-and-miss at times.
I got a switch that had RCA component out as well. My TV only had a DVI inputs. I assume that your TV does not have an HDMI input, as if it did, it would not have a need for RCA component audio in.
This switch allowed me to route everything from the ATV2 into my TV with one device. The switch was about $60 USD and the cable about $7 USD. That was a small price to pay, considering the cost of some new TV's.
Your TV needs to be capable of 720P and be HDCP compliant though. Confirm that if you have not.
I hope you are able to get it up and working. The APTV2 is a great device, but has some compatibility issues, even with fully compatible new TV that have HDMI and are HDCP compliant.
