Apple TV  - HDMI or Component

Please forgive me If the issue I have raised is one that has been discussed at length previously. I am new to all things Apple and new to discussion forums.
I am now the owner of an Apple TV.
I intend to use it with my Panasonic HD ready plasma. However, I am currently using all three of the HDMI ports - A Humax freesat HD PVR, a Panasonic BD player and a PS3. Of which I use the PS3 the least.
What connection is the best for Apple TV? HDMI or Component?
Should I simply connect the Apple TV via Component - without having to reconnect anything else.
Or should I hook up the Apple TV via HDMI and re-connect the PS3 via component?
Sorry for being a muppet!
Any help on this issue would be appreciated.

If you have a 1080p24 television (a.k.a. TrueHD), then I would advise keeping the PS3 on HDMI and using component for the AppleTV. The reason for this is that the PS3 can play movies and games at full 1080p, whereas the HD content on the AppleTV is heavily compressed in comparison and limited to 720p. As far as I can see, the only benefit you get by running the AppleTV in 1080p mode is when viewing high resolution photos.
I have also had many problems using the AppleTV in 1080p mode with an HDMI cable and my Sony Bravia 1080p24 LCD television. When I try and play a video, I get a blank screen until I reset the ATV. The only way I have managed to prevent this from happening is by using a component cable and switching to 720p mode.

  • Can I make apple tv2 work on an HDTV with component connections using an HDMI to component converter?

I bought an apple tv2 and hooked it up through an HDMI to component converter then to my HDTV as it does not have an HDMI connection. When I turned it on, I got the start up screen x3. Three of the start up screen all across the display. Is there any way to make it work? Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
I'd strat by restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for a 30 seconds. It may however be the converter, compliant converters won't let you watch HDCP protected content and probably won't support scaling either.

  • I'm looking for a good HDMI to component converter,

I decided to get a 2nd Apple TV for our basement room where we have an older TV with no HDMI input.  I bought a cheaper HDMI to component converter but whenI hooked it up to the TV, I just got some weird green images and after triple checking all the cables, and testing the new Apple TV on our main TV with HDMI, I decided that the converter was the problem.  Has anyone had any luck using a converter to get Apple TV to work with an older TV?
If so, please let me know what to look for.
    Thanks.

Potential issues for you with such a converter.
If the converter is HDCP compliant then you wont be able to watch content from the iTunes store or netflix.
If your TV isn't widesceen or doesn't accept 720p then you'll likely find your picture is squashed or doesn't fill the screen properly.

  • Only green when connecting  thru an hdmi to component video converter

I get only green color display when connecting Apple TV 2nd gen thru an hdmi to component video converter and I tried resetting and all the video output options - any ideas???

Only HDMI is officially supported with the device. There will be no guarantee with a converter.

  • HDMI or Component: both are flaky

    OK, here's my story:
I have a 32 Sony LCD TV hooked to a Sony HDMI Receiver (DG-1000). I have many components hooked up to the receiver (HD cable box, PS3, Wii) through various connections (Component, HDMI) and all of them work fine. I tried hooking up the Apple TV via HDMI and everything works great... until I switch the input or turn anything off. Then, when I attempt to use the AppleTV again I get the dreaded HDMI handshake problem... Apple TV blinks amber for 5 minutes or so, then it resets itself, I choose a language and screen resolution again, and it works again. Annoying as ****. Eventually I learned if I just unplug the ATV immediately it will "fix" itself faster.
I finally got tired of dealing with this and I decided I'd just use component. So I hooked it up (optical cable for sound) and everything works at first, but eventually the receiver will stop receiving a picture signal from the AppleTV. The sound still plays and I can hear the menu working so I know the ATV is still working fine, but the picture either "freezes" (showing a static frame of whatever the last thing it was showing was) or just completely cuts out (the TV acts like it stopped receiving a signal completely). If I unhook the component cable from the Apple TV and hook them back in it will work, but the problem will eventually happen again. I tried 2 different sets of cables.
So, I can't use HDMI because of the ATV's horrible HDMI handshaking and I can't use component for some unknown reason. What exactly am I suppossed to do? Again, for the record, all other components work fine with this receiver/TV combo, over both HDMI and component.
    Thanks.

Try connecting directly to your tv with hdmi or component and only connect ?tv sound to your receiver.

  • Video out settings HDMI and Component out run at the same time?

Does anyone know if I can get video out of both the HDMI port and component video connections at the same time. Trying to distribute video throught the house on component, and still get HD on the flat panel in the living room. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Apple says when both HDMI and component are connected, HDMI will take precedence over component. Short answer: no.

  • What is best HDMI or component? why?

I just got the apple tv and I am using it with a LCD samsung 23" but I do not know if it is much better to use HDMI than component??
another thing is I put on pause the apple tv and it gets hot when is not in use.... any ideas'?

HDMI is a digital connection, component needs to convert your signal to analogue which degrades it during the process, The difference is quite noticeable.
The tv does run quite hot. It's heat sink is its casing, even on pause the device is still quite busy. That being said if it should ever get past the point were you can touch it I would start to suspect a problem.

  • I have an Retina display MacBook Pro with HMDI out port. I also have an HDMI to Component cable with Audio Plugs. How can I get HDMI out to work with this cable when plugged into the Component and Audio ports on my TV?

I have an Retina display MacBook Pro with HMDI out port. I also have an HDMI to Component cable with Audio Plugs. How can I get HDMI out to work with this cable when plugged into the MacBook Pro and connected to the TVs Component and Audio in ports.

Will not work.  To my knowledge, dual converting like that isn't supported.  The Mac must detect the connected video output device and that sort of info cannot be done across an analog component uni-directional connection.

  • HT1551 Apple tv hdmi splitter

I just purchased apple tv and have only 1 HDMI port on my tv which connects the tv to the cable box.   Do I need a splitter to connect apple tv hdmi cable to my tv ?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
No, you need an HDMI switch.

  • HDMI to Component

No sure which model Mitsubishi you have but my Mitsubishi model # WS65813 has a DVI connection that Im using. So it's HDMI from ATV to DVI to your TV for video and Optical audio out from ATV to Audio receiver for audio. Here's the cable you need for video (much cheaper than a converter).

  • Photos displaying 16:9 through Apple TV HDMI ??? How do it ?

How can I display photos in 16:9 on a SONY Bravia through a HDMI connection from the 160GB Apple TV ?
I was surprised today when I used my iPod Photo on a widescreen TV for a slideshow, and even without HDMI connection, the photos displayed in all screen (16:9).
In my Sony Bravia the photos displayed through the Apple Tv (HDMI connection), use less screen.
    Why is that ?

nothing you can do about overscan really, unless your tv has the option to adjust the picture geometry (most don't).

  • Apple QT MPEG2 Playback Component conflict w/Mavericks

I am running OX 10.9.1, Mavericks. and wnat to transfer my VOB files from DVD into iMovie for editing. Per the instructions in this discussion (https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3951 ), I installed MPEG StreamClip. I also purchased the Apple QT MPEG2 PB component - oops! - BC the Apple store says I actually don't need it if I'm running Lion or later. Per the Streamclip site (squared5.com) ,even though Apple says the QT PB tool is not needed, Streamclip still needs it. Fine, whatever. With Streamclip installed, I attempted to install the QT MPEG2 PB tool, but I got this error code: "QuickTime MPEG2 can't be installed on this disk. This software is intended for an earlier version of Mac OSX." For fun, I tried transferring my VOB files from DVD into streamclip, but that yielded another error that teh tranfer would not be complete, adn owuld be missing elements. That's true - the files I transfered to streamclip are now audi only.
So it appears that I need the Apple QT MPEG2 PB tool, but it's not available for Mavericks. Or am I missing something else? If streamclip won't work on MAvericks , is there an alternative QT MPEG2 PB component? Or, can you please show me another way to get my VOB files from DVD into iMovie?
Thank you very much, and I appreciate your time.
    Alison

I found this info frm samberl in australia (in this discussion thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/17333072#17333072), and it enabled me to install the QT MPEG2 playback component. Although all the instructions are directed toward Lion users, apparently it also applies to Mavericks.
"You need to delve deeper into MPEG Streamclip, Lion and Quicktime MPEG2 playback.
    From the MPEG Streaclip website.
"The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7."
