Apple tv hogs network

I have one of the cute little black Apple TVs.  I think it used to behave fine, but now when I pug it into my network (my house is wired, I rarely use wireless), the Apple TV just BLASTS packets over the network so much that it kills internet access on every other computer.. I can watch the lights on my switches (I have several switches) and it looks like the 4th of July with the lights going crazy.  The minute I unplug my Apple TV, everything returns to normal.
Any ideas?
The Apple TV, btw, DOES work (tunes in movies, etc), but I can't put it on my network these days because it shuts down the rest of my home network.
thanks
dc

All I can suggest is a settings reset on the AppleTV. You'll have to re-enter all your accounts and passwords.
I wonder if the AppleTV is getting confused by your multiple switches (routers). I wonder if it's Bonjour broadcast traffic bouncing around in loops on your network. This is pure speculation. I don't really know what I'm talking about.

  • Getting Apple's "Midi Network" to work

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro computer to work as a wonderful "slave computer". Basically, because I extensively use the "CPU & Memory hog" Kontakt/Kontakt Player programs, I purchased the new MacBook Pro to divide the work load. So far, it's proven to do this nicely! The MacBook Pro is a 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB's of SDRAM running on Leopard 10.5.4. I have an external hard disk drive which houses all of the instrumental sound libraries. The external hard disk drive is connected to the MacBook Pro using an eSATA connector. The audio device used is a new MOTU 828 MK3.
My older Mac Pro workstation is noted below. Please note that I have not upgraded the older Mac Pro workstation to Leopard YET. Although I do plan on upgrading the operating system, things are working quite fine using 10.4.11. I use M-Audio's Keystation Pro 88, connected to the older Mac Pro workstation, as the midi controller.
    The issue. . .
I can't get the Apple Midi Network to work between the two Apple computers. They both seem to see each other, but midi information does not seem to be transferred between the two computers.
At present, I have both networked via a NETGEAR 8 Port 10/100/1000 Mbps Gigabit Switch. This is so that I can have access to the Internet. Now, I am able to transfer files between the two computers. Both computers seem to "see" each other using this network method.
For the MacBook Pro, I am using a CAT6 ethernet cable. I think that this is also true for the older Mac Pro workstation.
I believe that I am configuring the "Midi Network" function correctly. I can see it via the Logic Pro 8.02 program (in the Environment).
Finally. . . I am able to use Music Lab's MidiOverLan CP3 between the two Apple computers!! This is solid! Why, though, am I NOT able to get Apple's "Midi Network" to work?? Am I misunderstanding its function?? Does it not work when one computer is operating under Leopard and the other (older) computer is using the older version?? Could it be the CAT 6 cables?? The NETGEAR switch??
At present, I am happy using the MidiOverLan CP3 program to communicate midi information between the two computers. It would be nice to be able to correctly use Apple's own software, though. (Maybe it's user error??)
    Thank you in advance.

Several months ago, I DID get this feature to work...And I'm sorry, I don't remember exactly what I did. It took several attempts. I linked my intel and PPC mactogether.
The problem was, there was too much of delay to make this a useful feature for realtime recording. I was trying to play a virtual instrument, that was a PPC plug-in while recording on a newer macpro..
If you were willing to create 'scratch' tracks one computer, using native Logic plugins, until you had all the midi data right. and then wanted to port midi over to the 2nd computer, and create a more detailed sound to port back into your 2nd computer, it CAN be done. but like I said the delay was too much..(I couldn't get it to be a realtime feature)
There was a 'delay adjustment' feature, in the midi, but I couldn't get that to be useful. If you have plug-ins that you absolutely can't live without, you can try this, but I found it to be too much trouble, and there were some computer lockups involved.

  • Can you connect an Apple TV to a non-Apple Wi-Fi network?

I just purchased an AirPort express with the hopes of using it for AirTunes while being controlled by my iPhone 3G as the remote. After a number of setup issues Apple support told me that I need an Apple wireless router if I want to use AirTunes and surf the internet at the same time. AirPort express can't join an existing non-Apple Wi-Fi network, it needs to create it's own one. (This means I have to disconnect from my internet connection in order to listen to AirTunes.) Does Apple TV have this same limitation, or can you just connect Apple TV to an existing non-Apple Wi-Fi network? (I'm pretty sure that Apple TV has AirTunes too.)
My AT&T U-verse already provides me with a wireless base station; I don't want to have to purchase another one and have redundant routers.

    yes of course.
you can connect it to any wifi network (assuming you know the wifi key of course).
the host itunes library will need to be accessible on that network though.

  • Apple's social networking app list

I need to get Apple's social networking app list to display on a webpage. Does Apple have the list in a text format that can be used?

you can try these pages for the list of social networking apps

  • Mail suddenly hogging network usage

I have been using the mail app for years and just the other day it started spiking my network usage to the point that I cannot leave mail open at all.
Initially, the account in question had the loading wheel on it constantly even though there was nothing reported in the mail activity window. After browsing some forums I tried deleting mails prefs but that didn't solve the problem. Now there's no loading wheel but it still hogs network.
I've read that this may be because I tried to send something with a large attachment, which I recently have, so I'm guessing this is the problem but I have no clue how to fix it. I went on gmail in safari and deleted the large email I sent in the from the sent folder and cleared the trash but this has still not solved my problem.
Does anyone have any clues that may help me? I just want to use mail again. Thanks.
    -Spencer

I found this from the user GoldenShoes:
The problem appears to be in the calendar data you have in Mail, so if you should test that by removing the todos-info.plist file from Home/Library/Application Support/iCal and then restart Mail to see if the problem continues. If not, then you'd need to quit Mail, restore the todos-info-plist file, open iCal and copy all those ToDo items; then remove the todos-info.plist file again, restart iCal and paste the ToDo items back in and save it.
Then you can restart Mail and see if that solves your problem.
It worked for me... hope it helps you.

  • My apple extreme wireless network is working fine with the macs but ios devices (iPhone & iPad) will not connect. I can see the network though. Everything was working until the ISP went down. Any suggestions?

My apple extreme wireless network is working fine with two Macs but ios devices (iPhone & iPad) will not connect. I can see the network and it's telling me I'm connected but Safari says I'm not connected to the internet. Everything was working until the ISP went down. Any suggestions?

Thank you, I've tried the support tips (resetting the network, checking security settings, etc.) and rebooting the network devices several times to no avail. I've actually been working on this for several days (when I can afford to have the network down).
What I have to determine is what has changed in the setup...from when it WAS working just fine with all devices.

  • "there is a problem with your apple tv ethernet networking" but I am connecting wirelessly

So basically I can happily see all my movies etc on my TV via Apple TV but they appear to play but with no image. Sound is OK! Then the ATV decides something is wrong, reboots and says "there is a problem with your apple tv ethernet networking" but I am trying to connect over wifi.
    I have original ATV
    Thanks in advance
    Daniel

You may have some software corruption or the unit may well be starting to fail.
Hold menu and down arrow for 6 secs to reboot the unit to the diagnostics/service menu from where you can reinstall the original shipping software (some have had issues updating beyond version 1.0 if that's what's on it) but first I'd try to run the diagnostics utility though it often passes this even if there are issues.
Always worth unpowering the AppleTV and letting it rest for a few minutes before restarting - this can sometimes reset thing that a powered reboot won't.

  • Can I use Apple TV on network without internet connection?

I'm helping someone who has an Apple TV (version1) and their router and internet connection is down.  We need to use the AppleTV today to stream a video from her mac to the TV connected to the Apple TV for a presentation.  Can we just hook up the Mac and the AppleTV to a switch via Ethernet (or connnect wirelessly to an AirPort Base station) and stream the video without being connected to the internet?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can't just use a switch, but you can use a router or wifi access point without access to the internet, but you will need a DHCP server to give each device on the network an IP address.
You may also be able to connect the Mac and Apple TV directly with an ethernet cable, I've tested this with the Apple TV 1, but not with the Apple TV 2.

  • Apple TV as network input for Samsung Blue-Ray DVD player

I've been using a Airport Express to connect my Blue-Ray player to my wireless network. Can I instead use the Apple TV that sits in almost the same spot? If so how?

do you mean connect the blueray player to the appletv?
if yes, then no you can't.
the appletv is a client device and can't give network access to anything.

  • Connect Apple TV to networked devices

I have a science lab with (2) Visio LCD TVs, an NEC projector, a SMART board, and a Dell computer w/ Windows 7. All of these devices are connected by HDMI cables and/or VGA cables.
Can an Apple TV be connected to these networked devices so that the Apple TV will play on all devices selected?

The ATV is connected to a source via HDMI (i.e. LCD HDTV) and can utilize airplay/home-sharing to connect to your computer and other IOS devices.

  • Why is Apple focusing on networking and connecting socially?

Seeing the newest OS come out this week made me very excited! I was hoping to upgrade today, but changed my mind on a few reasons...
It doesn't seem very different then Lion, so is it really worth the $20.00? All they've really added, on the surface of the OS, is more iOS features like reminders, game-center, and notifications. They also added easer access to social networks like facebook, twitter, flikr; and connect to your iOS devices. Is this all really necessary or is it just typical advertising to draw in the average buyer?
Now I see Apple is trying to make life easer on it's buyers, but where is the artistic improvements in the app's, sure you can share your photographs that you edited in iPhoto, or a video you spliced together in iMovie, but what about a NEW creative application, like an animation program that apple makes specifically for its computers, or a type of web designer that lets you design in HTML format? So, how I see it, in the beginning Apple computers where made for the artistic type, Today they seem to be in too big a rush to stay ahead of Windows then to try something different. To get to my point, what's new? Not improved, what's NEW?!
I am looking for a reason why this program is worth buying?
    Thanks,
    pappyprops

Yes, the focus with ML is certainly on trying to get people who have iOS devices to switch to using Apple computers.
For long-time devotees of OS X like us, there's not much in it. Snow Leopard was still a far more versatile and more widely compatible OS than either 10.7 or 10.8. If you're on 10.6.8. I would think twice about upgrading.
However, I think if you're on 10.7 already, it's worth upgrading to 10.8, simply because ML seems to be more stable and more refined. They have fixed some of the annoying things in Lion (like you can now put Devices back to the top of the Finder sidebar, Resume is turned off by default, 'Save As' has been resurrected, Launchpad actually has a filter bar etc etc.). Some of the apps are better too - some nice new features in Preview for editing and Safari has an all-in-one address/search bar).
More features are advertised explained here: http://www.apple.com/osx/whats-new/features.html

  • Does using more than one apple tv affect network connection

    My AppleTV has upgraded.
Since then the network connection has been very fragile
I have restarted the apple tv, the tv, and all the devices.
I have also restarted the modem.
    Nothing is working.
I have two apple tvs; so i am now wondering whether having both of them working might affect the network connection.
Or is there any other reason for such a fragile connection?  and what can be done to get a more stable connection?

Yes. I've been doing this. We have a family HP laptop with 750 GB of storage that is our library. One TV in the Den and one in the Family Room. Both have AppleTV's. I've had no problem simultaneously streaming to each AppleTV from the library computer. They both are synced to that PC as well ... mainly for photos. I originally was using my existing wireless-g network and this worked well. I recently put in a couple of Airport extreme units and they work great in wireless-n but I'm not sure it was really necessary ... I just wanted the AppleTVs to be able to stream and sync at their max possible speeds to minimize the possibility of slowing down of our network. The Airport Extreme's may have been overkill but they work really well ... easy to setup and we've now got a very strong wireless signal all over the house. Are you considering multiple AppleTV's?
A nice benefit of multiple AppleTVS is that you always have a backup remote control in case the kids (or maybe I)get absent minded.

  • NAS Drives and Apple TV and networking

Hello, first post on here so sorry if it is a bit disjointed!!!
Trying to be as brief as possible, I am running an imac with a time machine backup drive attached and a macbook. Both connect via wifi to the internet through my speedtouch 585 i router (Cytanet provided)
I need more storage because my photo library is currently running at 280GB
My thinking is that if i get a 4TB NAS drive and connect it to my router, i can access the drive from both computers and use it as a backup for my content. trouble is, if i set up the macs to the home network using the built in airport then will i lose the internet?
I also want to get an Apple Tv and use the NAS drive to stream content to it.
The main question is, how do I set up the computers to see the NAS drive and the internet? will it automatically see the drive as it is attached to the router?
and, if i can get that working, will using the internet slow down streaming to the Apple Tv.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums
I don't fully understand why you think you will lose access to the internet by adding a NAS drive to your network.
You should be able to add the NAS, and the tv without losing your internet connection. Your macs should be able to see the NAS and use it for storage and back up, you should have no problem using it for your iphoto/itunes content and the tv should be able to use that content through itunes.
Network drives are unfortunately quite slow in comparison to external drives but in most scenarios should do the job.
Your connection to the internet may well be something like 8 - 16 Mbps, the NAS interface may allow speeds of around 20 Mbps, the tv requires around 5 Mbps but will operate up to about 14 Mbps. Your LAN is likely capable of much higher speeds and you shouldn't really have too much trouble using everything together.

  • Apple TV looses network configuration

    Hi people;
I have configured my Apple TV and everything works fine. I accessed ITunes, photos etc...
When I put the AppleTV on a stand by mode it loose the network configuration every time.
Does somebody know how to save the network configuration in oder not to loose it?
    Thanks;
    Joaquim Santos Neto

It might not solve your problem but you could eliminate it as a possible cause by changing to a 5 letter password for 64/40 bit encryption or a 13 letter password for 128/104 bit encryption.
