Apple TV & Home Sharing Stopped Working Overnight --- What Happened?

Sunday night (September 15), I was able to stream video from my iTunes to my Apple TV via Home Sharing. I went home last night (September 16) and tried to watch a couple of videos. Apple TV told me I had to turn on Home Sharing, which was already on. I tried everything I could possibly think of, restarting, rebooting, everything on the technical articles, an I ultimately did a restore. Nothing. It's not working. I did absolutely nothing to alter the settings between Sunday and Monday. So what is the deal? Is anyone having similar problems?

Bailcam, I did a lot of searching in these forums and found a solution. I created a rule in my antivirus software which opened the ports Apple TV uses in iTunes. Then I shut down my computer and restarted. I opened up iTunes and turned Home Sharing on. I then turned off Home Sharing on Apple TV and restarted. Once it was back up, I turned Home sharing on and voila, Apple TV was accessing my Library once again. It's crazy that I had to go to these measures, but the darn thing is working again.

I don't need to try this yet I'm not sure what I did but after yet again unplugging atv, plugging an Ethernet cable in as our airport express stopped working after latest updates too, unplugged Ethernet and attempted a wireless connection it worked! For some reason after 4 days of not connecting the air port express works again! And atv is recognising home sharing.
Updates are set to auto for atv so perhaps a patch there? Or just lucky combo of things I did?

I have a large library on iTunes 11.2.0.115, running on a Windows 8.1 computer with 12GB RAM and abundant processor and disk. I'm finding that Home Sharing stops working after one session, and then I have to turn it off and back on, re-entering my Apple ID and password. Some of my other devices have an easier time than others, but none can find the library once it stops working. Quitting and restarting iTunes, and/or rebooting do not work. Disabling IPV6 doesn't work.
The one that sees the library best is my AppleTV V3, updated to current firmware. My iPhone 5S on IOS 7.1.1 almost never sees the library, and neither does my iPad 2. My iMac Air sees the library after restarting Home Sharing.
I've looked and see lots of threads about this here and elsewhere. Are there any logs or anything I can look at for clues? Is there a way to get help from Apple (without paying per incident?)
I have turned on Match, and that seems to work pretty well. I'm looking for central play counts, and shared playback of lossless files as my primary wants. My whole family has Apple iPhones, and I'd like them to be able to use this library.
Any ideas are appreciated.

HT2463 Home sharing stopped working. Windows 8 Netgear wndr3700 router

Have two AppleTv's that home sharing stopped working on. Windows 8 Pro, Netgear WNDR3700, Dell 9100 XPS. Have gone through two calls with Appletv support but no permanent fix. Homesharing says it's on. on the appletv's and itunes, all with the same id. One call had me power cycle my Cox cable modem, Netgear router, PC and Appletv's but no go. Second call had me disable Port scan and DOS protection plus change NAT filtering from Secured to Open.This worked for a couple day then nothing. Windows firewall is on, inbound trafic allowed from itunes.
PS3 and iPhones work fine on wireless

This definitely helped. Trying this pointed to my PC. Turned out airplay was not loading when iTunes was started up. Had to restart my PC and then airplay loaded when I started up itunes. Once airplay was active home sharing worked on all my ATV's. I'll have to monitor and see how long this lasts.

Why does home sharing stop working?

Home sharing with my windows 7 desktop suddenly stopped working about 2 months ago. I went through the recommended steps online for troubleshooting home sharing but that did not help. A friend said I should uninstall and then reinstall iTunes which works the first time I connect via Apple TV. The second time I turn on Apple TV, home sharing does not work; i.e. it will not connect. I should remark that uninstalling and then reinstalling ITunes does not always work in allowing home sharing to make the connection. Any ideas to try?

I have had the same frustrations for months. Then I read a suggestion and tried it and it worked, at least for me. Here is what you do.
Go to Control Panel
Then click Network and Internet
Then Network Sharing Center
Under Connections, click your internet connection.
In the pop up box click on "properties" and when the box pops up, say yes.
Then uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 and click the okay box.
After I did that mine started working and has worked even after turning off itunes and getting back in.

Home sharing on my iPad just hangs.
I have a large video library, so it took awhile to load it under ios6, but now it has stopped working altogether. The little wheel just keeps spinning around and around, then after about 5 minutes the video app crashes. There's some Quality Apple Software™ for you...
I've tried logging out of home sharing & logging back in; power cycling all devices, etc. I'm pretty sure the problem isn't with iTunes, because my Apple TV is loading up the entire video library in a matter of just a few seconds.
Is there ANYTHING I can do to get home sharing to work on this iPad 3?

I am having this exact same issue on an iPAd 2 and iPad mini in videos. I also have this issue in Music on a 4s. After many attempts, turning on/off home sharing in itunes, rebooting, and esetting the entire network settings in the 4s, because Messages wasn't sending.. The 4s is finally filling in the circle as it tries to connect. I have a large video and audio library (Apple's seen a lot of income from me), but the 20min to load n the 4s is absurd.
Still can't get Video to connect to home sharing on either iPad. I've been trying many times for this 'magic' attempt to happen, but so far no luck. Very frustraed right now.

How do I get Apple TV home sharing to work again?

I'm using an iMac, I have Apple TV 2, a Bt home hub 3, between 30-50mb speed over wifi (160mb when my mac is wired). I have followed all the set up instructions, up to date software, firewall etc. On the Apple TV I can watch a movie through it's iTunes no problem, BUT when I try via home sharing it works for a few minutes then tells me to connect to the network, then connects again a few seconds later, then I try again and it does the same thing despite every other wifi device working fine ( humax, ps3, wii). Until about 4/5 months ago it worked perfectly with exactly the same hardware, so surely it can only be the updates? Is there a solution out there or do I have to wait until Apple pull their bloody finger out and fix it properly? The main reason for having Apple TV was the home sharing, so now this is just an expensive doorstop.

If you look in the audio output port, is there a red light showing. If so, the internal switch is stuck.. Insert the headphones a few times, jiggle a toothpick inside or shot some compressed air to trip the switch. If no success, have the Apple store genius bar technician do it.

After installing ios 5, home sharing stopped working with iPad 2

After I've installed iOS 5, Home sharing stopped playing on my iPad 2.
I can SEE the content but the movies app simply hangs when I try playing it.
I can still play the content on an iPad 1 though..
Has anyone encountered something like that before?

Using iTunes 10.5 on a PC running windows 7

After installling iOS5 the Videos App on my iPad2 takes forever to start films and TV shows from home sharing, if at all. I get a black screen after starting the film which can last between 10 seconds and a few minutes.
I've also noticed that I can't get the status of the film (volume, time etc.) to show when tapping the screen.
On top of all that, after having solved the issue with the TV shows being doubled and tripled up, I've noticed that the covers for movies are often on the wrong film.
Help!! Please!!

I upgraded my iTunes to 11.1, and upgraded my iPad to OS7 as well as my iPhone. Suddenly my home sharing stopped working with my apple TV.

I installed the iTunes 11.1 update, upgraded my iPad to iOS7 and now my AppleTV does not see my home sharing. What the heck is going on?

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
This works for some users. Not sure why.
Go to Settings>General>Date and Time> Set Automatically>Off. Set the date ahead by about a year.Then see if you can connect to the store.

Home sharing stops working

Hi,
For a while now Home Sharing has been broken for me. It works when I first start iTunes but after a period of time I can no longer see the library through any of my devices, ATV, iPhone, iPad. The amount of time before it stops working is inconsistent. Sometimes it will work for an hour, other times it fails almost immediately.
I'm reasonably sure the probIem started when I went to iTunes 10.5 but can;t remember for sure. Recently I updated to 10.5.1.42 and I had hoped that would fix it. It hasn't. Does anyone else have this problem? Or do you know if it is possible to get an older version of iTunes?

Home sharing with the new Apple TV / iTunes update is just broke. Only works for a bit unless you restart iTunes or disable / re-enable Home Sharing. Use to work great until the last updates. This is not a network (router, firewall, ...) issue - just a (bad) regression in Apples software. Hopefully they fix this soon, hard to believe its been broke this long already. The Remote app update also fails to connect to Apple TVs (but does connect to iTunes) for many people as well. Poor QA all around. :(
I have yet to see any suggestion that actually works other than reverting to previous versions of fwr / iTunes - which is a pain / joke to do.

Home Sharing Stops Working After a Few Minutes

Since upgrading to 10.6.1.7, iTunes spontaneously stops Home Sharing after some minutes of playing back content via my Apple TV Gen 3. The Apple TV which had just been in the middle of playing content, reverts back to the home screen with a message about Home Sharing at the top. If I then click on Computers, it informs me that I should turn on Home Sharing in iTunes. It is already turned on as I was just in the middle of using it. The computer and the Apple TV are plugged into the same switch. The only work-around that I've found is to exit the iTunes application an restart it each time that it fails every few minutes. This makes watching content incredibly exasperating. Are there any better work-arounds with more longevity? This problem effectively makes the Apple TV a worthless device, and I may be returning it soon.

I upgraded itunes to 10.7 and home sharing on the Apple TV stopped working. That is why I bouught it. Is that it? Is it now a boat anchor?

Home Sharing stopped working

I've been using home sharing on my Ipad 2 and Apple TV for almost a year now with no problem. 2 weeks ago I did the most recent update and now home sharing doesn't work. It'll work for maybe 4 mins right after I start up Itunes, but then it will just stop working, like I turned my computer off or something...please help! I didn't do anything different to my computer, I'm pretty sure it happend because of the last update.

Sometimes thing can go a little whacky when updates come out. It's happened to me when I've update iTunes. Actually, at times I hesitate to update for that reason. I am still holding off updating the the most recent version right now.
I would double check in the iTunes preferences ... launch iTunes and go to Edit>Preferences>Sharing - and make sure that the library is still selected to be shared.
You could try rebooting the router again or maybe even totally uninstall and reinstall iTunes. You can try rebooting all of the other devices but I would guess that the issue is with iTunes and not the devices - but that is just an assumption.
